Sunday ... three Green teams in action

Lee Ealham has added the returning Sean Skillett and the much-travelled Chris Gillam to the Sunday senior squad. A host of injuries and suspensions means they could both feature in this morning's home clash with Aldington (10.30 am kick off). The seconds make the short trip to local side Highfield with Phil Wedge predicting promotion at the first attempt since the move from the Folkestone League.  Rounding off a fascinating weekend of entertainment, the U15s get their league campaign under way with a home fixture against Whytecliff Rangers (2pm kick off). This is a big season for the boys as they move that step nearer to the senior set up and Patron Dave Homewood and Vice President Dave Andrews will be at the ground to talk to players and their parents.  Hopefully more seniors will support the side this season, especially at home matches.

A weekend of mixed fortunes ended with the Under 15s winning 3-2 at home to Ashford Colts thanks to scores from George Wall (2) and Dan Churchley. In a match played in driving snow, the lads were 3-0 ahead and coasting but the visitors put up a brave show and forced a close finale (Steve Mailey’s report is on the Youth link).  Earlier the firsts were like the weather, the ref and the pitch – poor! Bethersden seemed sharper and full of running off the ball as we let a 4-2 lead slip and finished 5-4 losers. Congratulations to the villagers on a well-earned win but for the Green this simply is not good enough. Craig Southen 2, Glenn Mackett and Marcus Hodges netted for the Green who can now, as they say, ‘concentrate on the cups’.  First up are old rivals Kennington who visit us next Sunday in the semi final of the Bodkin Cup (10.30am). Up at The Ridge, Phil Wedge’s charges are still eyeing up a promotion spot after a 5-1 defeat of The Albion. A solid all-round team performance with Richard Floyd and Jason Thomas impressing. Netting for the Green, who have no fixture next Sunday, were Ashley Webster 2, Matt Wedge 2, and Ricky Milton from the penalty spot.

Edgy Green take early lead but second half collapse is costly

A coolly taken goal by Craig Southen in the first half lured the Green into thinking next to bottom Crocks were there for the taking but it was to all go wrong after the turn round. Two fine stops by Joseph McQuillan kept the home team in front but one always felt the next goal was going to be decisive. And so it was with the visitors not only levelling but going on to enjoy large periods of possession that culminated with two more goals to seal an unexpected win.  Despite the setback, there were positives with the impromptu centre back pairing of Terry Perk and Ryan Smith doing enough to suggest that with regular games together a sound understanding could be formed. As always Mackett, Southen and Reed played with plenty of passion but with a pile of injuries and no help from above it proved to be yet another day to forget. Compounding the misery, Milton Athletic bagged three points with a 2-0 success against Coney Hall. Next week the side travels to meet Fleet Leisure.

Hi Dave
We won 2-0 today; goalscorers were anthony davies and luke stanley;
we started brightly and continued the same way throughout the game,
with Bearsted’s keeper playing a blinder. The whole team played really well
and we should have won 4 or 5 nil but 2 was enough and 3 pts this time
of the season was crucial. Considering Bearsted played 3 or 4 first teamers
the performance was superb. Let’s hope we play like that on Tuesday night

Midweek update

It’s crunch time for Green teams

The next month is packed with crucial fixtures as the Green’s senior sides battle for priceless points for differing reasons. At the Swan Ground on Saturday, the firsts need to rise above all their injury and suspension miseries against second from bottom Crockenhill and bag the three points that will virtually ensure safety. Hopefully there will be a good turn-out to give the lads a boost as we approach the finale of a trying campaign; and who knows, perhaps we will enjoy that little bit of luck that has eluded us all season. Kick off is at 2.45pm. Also searching a maximum are the seconds who have a difficult match at Bearsted as they aim to push towards the title. Tuesday night (6.30pm) could well be a defining time as our old friends from New Romney visit for another virtual six-pointer and, with the Uni boys having two vacant weeks, there is a real opportunity to close the gap at the top.

In the Premier Division, Dave Andrews knows his Sunday firsts will need to be at their best to thwart visiting Bethersden with the villagers buoyed by a crushing of title favourites Ashford Cavaliers in last week’s Premier Cup final at Reachfields. Meanwhile, the Sunday Reserves have an away local derby with The Albion. Both games kick off at 10.30am.

The Under 15s hope to return to action with a home tussle against Ashford Colts (2.00pm) as they endeavour to consolidate their more than respectable placing in the East Kent Youth League table.

Basically, Uni Res beat Borden Res 1-0 to go 13 points clear but we have 5 games in hand and have dropped less points than any of our main rivals in the Eastern Reserves Division

Reserves game at New Romney is OFF

Today’s crucial Kent County League Reserves Division East fixture between New Romney Reserves and Bromley Green Reserves has been called off with the Blues pitch deemed too wet. Perhaps we are in for yet another classic evening ‘decider’ to mirror so many meetings in the past between the two clubs both at first and second team level.

MATCH ABANDONED IN CONTROVERSY

In a game in which phil wedge’s boys went looking to avenge their semi final elimination, the green took the game by the horns from the start and were all over the opposition, with gary mickelborough looking livley up front and james major and lee gilbert looking solid at the back .We were in complete control till a mistake by ricky milto allowed churchills to sneak ahead via a deflected shot. The greens response was to up the tempo of the game which payed dividends 15minutes later with the ever threatening mickelborough slotting home, bouyed by this the lads moved up another gear and went close on several more occasions. But with only 5 minutes of the 1st half left the green were awarded a penalty after one of the churchills players wanted to swap shirts early with robbie bowyer. What resulted from that can only be described as A DISGRACE TO FOOTBALL. The home team manager confronting the referee as well as several of the home team players, the referee at the request of the home team manager abandoned the game. Green so near but season of woe continues

After trailing 1-0 at the interval and looking anything but organised during the first period, the Green proceeded to dominate for long spells with the wind in their favour and seemed set to lift the cup when taking a 2-1 lead with just nine minutes remaining. However, these are not normal times for the club and somehow the villagers capitalised on their ball over top tactics to snatch a dramatic victory. With a host of players unavailable through ineligibility and injury, it was a strange line-up that took the field, but nevertheless each player did their best on a poor pitch. Stuart Daniel notched both the Green goals but I think we have all accepted the gods are against us at the moment. It doesn’t seem a particularly ‘funny old game’; but that’s football and it will change.

I would like to thank all those who braved the bitterly cold elements to support the club on Good Friday. The final had a miserable ending but how pleasing to see so many present and past Bromley Green supporters there. Let’s hope next year we can return and put things right!

Peter Intrieri reflects on another trying weekend

What was believed to be a crucial weekend for the Green, Both Ciaran and Peter felt very confident of a positive outcome of the 2 games. A very poor display on Friday in The Weald Of Kent was just not acceptable against a very ordinary basic opposition.

Both Managers were surprised to see many faces that had not been around the last few weeks through injury. This led us to believe that we had a strong squad which gave us many selection headaches as all players said they were fit. Hindsight is a very powerful thing to have in your locker, as quite clearly the squad was not fully fit so selection would have been different.

Not to be deterred the Green after a poor display found themselves leading 2-1 with only 7 minutes left but very basic errors let the lively P.West run rings round our defence with the Green going down 3-2.

A day to forget as Staplehurst And Monarchs sit at the bottom of Div 1 East.

The following day the Green travelled to Sheerness in horrendously cold windy conditions, which again left no place for football. To be let down by half of the final team from the previous day totally bemused Ciaran and I. 19 players at 9.00am to be left with just 10 at midday beggars belief but this is what has happened since November.

Playing against the wind in the first half and conceding early made it an uphill battle from the off, but the green should have gone in at least 3-1 up with Loyal club Captain Glenn Mackett doing his utmost for a victory . Nevertheless only down 1-0 the lads came in positive that the second half would reap us some reward. How untrue as once again as basic errors and fatigue left us with nothing and losing 3-0.

Without the reserve game being called off it would have been interesting as both Managers would of had to play.

Meanwhile Cookie and Kingers are doing well at Hythe who recorded a win at Croydon to keep in the Kent League title race while Marcus Hodges, who opened the scoring against Tunbridge Wells in a 3-1 victory, is making a huge impact at Faversham.

Next Saturday the Green welcome Fleet Leisure to the Swan Ground while the seconds have a top of the table clash with old friends New Romney Reserves down the Avenue.

Overnight rain causes fixtures doubt

The overnight rain means the home games with Kennington this Saturday and Sunday are doubtful. An inspection is being made this morning by Dave Andrews and if and when The Green Lane has any information, we will publish details. Supporters planning to watch at the Swan Ground or travel to Sheerness East to watch the first team are advised to check with the respective team manager before setting out. The Reserves game at The Ridge scheduled for Sunday must also be rated very doubtful. Again contact Phil Wedge the manager or if we have any news we will publish it.

No team details are available for either side but let’s hope the game is entertaining and we come out on top. Kick off is at 3.15pm.  Supporters wanting a lift should be at The Albert pub at the top of the town by 1.30pm.

After an unconvincing opening twenty minutes, during which the Street should have scored on at least three occasions, the Green gradually assumed control of this Ashford Charity tie played on a quagmire of a pitch. Although striker Tommy Lockett rapped a post, the Green were rarely a threat during the opening exchanges while at the other end dangerous ex-Green forward Tom Wilmshurst failed to take advantage of gilt-edged chances. With little to enthuse over for the visitors and the Street sensing a major upset, the match suddenly turned on a moment of extravagant brilliance by the in-form Gary Mickelborough, whose thunderbolt from outside the box left both sides stunned. It was indeed the performances of Mickelborough and keeper Joseph McQuillan, who pulled off two terrific saves in the mud, that illustrated why the Green camp remains positive over the rebuilding that has been forced upon them. The slender lead at half time was perhaps more than the Green deserved but when Mickelborough broke through again to slot home early in the second period the contest was effectively over. Plenty of endeavour from both sides, with Valler and Poyner putting in useful displays at the back for the Green and Pettit and Ketley steady for the home side, made for an entertaining game despite the conditions and, after two further superb saves by McQuillan, there was time for one more moment of sublime skill. Picking the ball up wide on the left, substitute Terry Perk cut in and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner. The three-goal margin was harsh on the Street but the Green, with Ealham and Mackett as ever committed to the cause, issued a lesson on taking chances whilst showing great resilience in keeping a blank sheet. The win sets up a mouthwatering home tie with locals Albion in the semi finals. Next Sunday Dave Andrews hopes to have Marcus Hodges, absent today through family illness, leading the line against Kennington in the Bodkin Cup semi final at the Swan Ground.

An opening long-range shot by captain Jim Pickard, who has hit a rich vein of scoring, set the Green on their way to maximum points at the Swan Ground on Saturday and kept the four-horse race for the title well and truly bubbling. Pickard, making his 14^th league appearance of the campaign, is thankfully steering clear of the injury blight that has hampered his career at the club in recent seasons. Oakwood in all honestly were unconvincing and the game was effectively finished as a contest when the ever-lively Gary Mickelborough notched a typical hat trick; demonstrating once again that he represents the difference between winning leagues and being also-rans. With Micky Davies yet again nominating himself as man of the match, and the experienced Steve Wilson comfortably controlling the back line, the result was never in doubt and further scores from Stuart Prior and substitute Tom Poyner rounded off the scoring. A sporting affair very well officiated by Mr G Hoare.

Ciaran McQuillan talks exclusively to The Green Lane

We played at home for the first time in a month against a very useful Norton team and were duly put to the sword from the first minute. It certainly appears to go against you when things aren’t going your way because a blatant penalty was waved away when Stuart Daniel was put clean through which might have resulted in a different outcome on the game if awarded. However, the referee obviously didn’t fancy sending off the guilty Norton defender (as should have been the case as per rules) so ignored all claims for a penalty and booked a Green player for having the audacity for questioning the decision. Even the Norton defender concerned apologised for the challenge. Norton scored after a minute and with the Green rarely making any inroads into the visitors half, you felt it was only a matter of time before the league leaders scored again. The much over-used main pitch was to be our undoing on the second Norton goal when Joseph McQuillan received a back pass from Ryan Smith only for the ball to hit a divot, strike the hapless keeper on the left knee and deflect into the path of a grateful opponent. We then lost Buster Beaney through a recurring injury and with that all hopes of a comeback diminished. More worryingly, Buster may not be available for the Weald of Kent Cup Final on Good Friday. The second half produced some excellent football from both sides but with Norton having pace and guile to burn it was always going to be an uphill battle. Craig Southen was struggling with a back injury and Stuart Daniel was also carrying a knock but both played on despite been restricted. Norton were 4 up when James Barham produced a stunning strike from 30 yards to bring some cheer to the beleaguered Green camp. Norton then equalled that feat with a move that was both stunning and lethal in its execution. Craig Smith then had a goal disallowed for offside after Tommy Lockett had struck the bar from the edge of the box. Norton then made it six to complete the sequence. James Barham was sent off for his second bookable offence, although his first for a two-footed lunge was enough to warrant a straight red. Tommy Lockett was lucky to stay on the pitch when he was involved in an unsavoury incident which was a shame because his attitude has been second to none of late. All the players have to be commended for their attitude when, quite frankly their backs are against a wall.

Bodkin Cup hopes still alive

In the most testing season the Green’s Sunday seniors have endured for many a year, there is still hope of silverware after this comprehensive victory over the brave villagers. With the line-up changing drastically every week, it is difficult for the side to gain any continuity but there was enough experience in the side to set up a semi-final with Kennington. Glenn Mackett, with two spot kicks, Gary Mickelborough 2, Tommy Lockett, Danny Valler and Marcus Hodges were the marksmen; while there was an encouraging run-out for substitute Jamie Dobbin. Talking to The Green Line, assistant manager Mark Day said there are still real problems with the stability of the defence. “In my day we had to do what the manager said, players just don’t seem to listen these days and apply basics; but credit to the lads that are there every week. It is going to be hard but we have not given up on the league yet”. Next Sunday the boys travel to meet Hamstreet in the Ashford Charity Trophy and will be hoping for the return of Leon Reed, Craig Southen, John Lockett and Kevin Barrett. For reasons unknown to me, we travelled to Folkestone with just 11 players. Those present put in a great team display as we looked to avenge the heavy defeat handed to us the last time we met. Murrell took centre stage at the heart of defence again, dealing with every single ball! That stability is passed through the side, as Neil put in a top central showing against some bigger lads. Seeing certain players grow in confidence is very pleasing, with Blowers and Cahalane again threatening from wide. We went in front through Neil, who reacted first from a corner. The lead was extended thanks to another delivery from Blowers. Other chances came and our effort possibly deserved a bigger margin. At the other end, we restricted Dynamo to just a few chances – but keeper Martyn Dalby dealt with them well, including a superb save which actually looked impossible! Dalby’s display earned him Man of the Match. I can’t ask for more than what the boys are giving (except a sub or two!), so well done to all. Not a good day for the Green with the firsts losing 6-1 at home to champions-elect Norton Sports and the seconds going down 2-1 at close rivals Bly Spartans Reserves. Congratulations to Marcus Hodges who hit a hat trick for Faversham in their 6-1 win at Sevenoaks. David Cook also found the net but Hythe slipped up 2-1 at home to Beckenham. For tomorrow’s Bodkin Cup tie at Wye, Dave Andrews has Lee Gilham, Craig Southen, Leon Reed and Kevin Barrett all missing. The seconds have no game while the Under 15s are meeting 12.45 at the ground for the trip to Cheriton.

Gilham Shock: Key defender is back in plaster

Saturday night update

Long-serving central defender Lee Gilham is back in plaster, effectively meaning he has little chance of registering any meaningful contribution throughout the whole of the 2007-08 season. This is terrible news for the player and the Green as a club and Vice President Ciaran McQuillan summed up the mood at the moment when he lamented “Just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse!”  Patron Dave Homewood said “We all feel for Lee  who is much loved at this club; quite what he has done to deserve this lousy deal is beyond me.  Lee is one of those like the Miltons and the Macketts of this world, that when the going gets tough he wants to be in there wearing his Green shirt with pride.  We have missed him sorely both Saturdays and Sundays and I know he will be angry at missing out on trying to help his mates rescue something from a frustrating season. All we can do is wish him a full recovery however long it finally takes”.

On a very sunny blustery day the much-changed Green firsts battled out a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Rusthall. Early signs showed that this game was not going to be easy as Rusthall dominated from the off and only an array of errors allowed the home side to take the lead with a well taken goal. Not to be deterred the green came very close through Stu Daniel, who broke clear just putting the ball wide. The green then lost their centre half, Lee Gilham on his return back from a lengthy injury. Left back Ryan Holloway was then drafted into the middle and was an inspiration to others as the green broke clear for Tommy Lockett to equalise. A thunderous 25 yarder gave Joe McQuillan no chance 2-1 Rusthall. With the wind playing its part Craig Southen looked up and swung in a cross that landed in the top right hand corner. 2-2. With minutes remaining in the first half a blatant offside goal was scored by Rusthall 3-2. With an encouraging half time talk, the lads were ready for the challenge and went out very upbeat and confident of getting something from the game. This never happened and 15 minutes from time it was 4-2 to Rusthall after another basic error. Pick of Rusthall were the two front men with new signing Ross Cable dominating the game. With the possibility of only 9 players on Friday evening and the debuts of numerous youngsters were a plus. There are not many teams that leave here with many points.

The club now needs to stick together on all fronts to help the first team avoid the drop as they are now in a relegation battle.

Manager Phil Wedge had nothing but praise for 9 men Green as they lost 1-0 to Shadoxhurst in the Sheber Cup. Shadoxhurst fielding a team of glory hunters were put under pressure from the kick off, with Chris Burden going close on several occasions.

Greens pressure paid dividends when we were awarded a penalty, only for the usually dependable Ricky Milton to put wide. With scores level at 0-0 at the interval Green went into the second half with confidence, but with 60 minutes one single lapse in concentration proved to be our undoing.

With extra time possible Wedge went for broke and pushed extra men forward but alas it wasn’t to be. Final result Bromley Green 0 Glory hunters 1. Man of the match Sean Dadd. Regards Phil.

Ciaran McQuillan writes exclusively for The Green Lane

It was never going to be easy at Norton on Saturday & so it proved to be as the hosts eventually ran out convincing 8-2 winners. For the first 40 minutes we held our own & actually took the lead via a fine strike from the superb Mark Bond, but you always had this horrible feeling that Norton had the pace & firepower to react to this setback. Losing Ashley Webster early on to a terrible lunge from the Norton skipper didn't help but it was basic schoolboy errors that led to the equaliser. Time & again we gave the ball away too cheaply & we were punished at the back post after a ball was cut across the six-yard box. Tommy Lockett, who was on for the injured Webster then picked up an injury which meant he had to lumber through the game because Mark Mason was taken off following a collision in the oppositions penalty area. It was during Mason's period of treatment that Norton took the lead, once again, pace being our undoing.
A third goal on the stroke of half time was cruel & visibly knocked the stuffing out of a lot of the players & it curtains as far as the game was concerned.
With Joseph McQuillan on for Mark Mason the second half was a gutsy display but with Glenn Mackett, Buster Beaney & Lockett carrying injuries it was a bit like lambs to the slaughter as the Faversham side pounced on their wounded prey. Lee Milton scored from the edge of the box to make it 5-2, but 3 late strikes sealed our fate.
Another no show meant we only had 2 subs & some players quite frankly don't even have the courtesy to answer messages but will probably expect to be picked for the Cup final.
Next week we have another tough trip away to Rusthall.

Prior and Poyner secure the points but Gibbs unhappy with standards

A goal apiece from Stuart Prior and Tom Poyner against mediocre Larkfield & New Hythe Reserves kept the Green well on target to recapture the Eastern Reserves Division title but manager Gary Gibbs told the The Green Lane that this was far from a good performance.

Mickelborough again the key with timely double

Gary Mickelborough is hitting his best form just at the right time as the Green have stormed back into hot contention for the Sunday League title after looking somewhat disheveled until just a few weeks ago. The current Player of the Season notched the two goals that not only sunk local rivals Kennington but also now see the Green right in the mix as the race for the finishing line begins in earnest. Dave Andrews told The Green Lane he is determined to keep the championship at the club despite the docking of three points by the league. "Every week is a cup final for us now, the spirit in the camp is terrific. Win every game and we win the league...we've done it before, so why not?  In reality I think it is going to go to the wire this year. But don't back against us!"  Only injuries to key players seems likely to prevent the Green from hitting their usual end of season high notes but with some very useful reserves waiting to grab their chance, the management team of Andrews, Jamie Allan and Mark Day are quietly confident. This week the boys have another tough test at Aldington.

Title holders Green made a mockery of those who have written them off for this season's crown by strolling to this win on Sunday that opens the race wide open again with a cluster of sides all in with a shout. A great squad effort with Marcus Hodges claiming a personal tally of four and the others coming from Lee Milton and substitute pair Kevin Barrett and Tom Poyner. Next Sunday the boys are at Kennington and there will be fitness tests for Glenn Mackett, Lee Gilham and John Lockett.

A bitterly cold day at Bearsted saw the Green's 1st XI as unlucky losers. A slow start by the Green who really never got out of first gear in the first half were bemused by the lack of consistency by the man in black who booked our players for petty offences yet seem to miss three horrendous tackles by the Bearsted number seven. Losing Glenn Mackett after only 20 minutes did not deter the spirit of the Green, but it was a basic error that let Bearsted in with only minutes left in the first half.

After only 10 minutes of the restart Bearsted go in front 2 - 0 through very impressive use of the wings for a simple tap in. Then out of nowhere the green show true character and completely dominate the game with some slick football and an array of sitters missed. It was left to the consistent Buster Beaney to notch a powerful Ronaldo like strike of 25 yards to set alarm bells ringing in the home camp. The man in black then strikes again to reduce the Green to 10 players, sending off Charlie Clarke, however not to be deterred chances by the Green should have salvaged a point, until the last 2 minutes when a penalty was awarded leaving the result 3 - 1.

The Green were missing Steve Harris and Stu Daniels while a player saying he would turn up just did not. We stay positive in our quest for survival and do not worry about what is going on elsewhere.

we really had to pick ourselves up to keep
ourselves in the title shout, and the boys responded superbly with a 5 nil drubbing against an aggressive Otford side.
Stuart prior grabbing a superb hatrick also Jim Pickard being pushed into midfield getting on the scoresheet and Kevin Barrett also scoring.
The whole team performed well, in particular vice president Lee Lurch Williams who had an absolute storming game in the midfield.
Considering key players have been taken by the
first team recently the spirit and depth of the squad has been superb.

The Green at last returned to some semblance of their true form with this hard-earned Bodkin Cup victory over Bliby at the Swan Ground to book a quarter final clash with Wye. Dave Andrews, disappointed that two senior players just did not turn up, was nevertheless full of praise for his side and with cup and league honours still to fight for he feels the lads are 'up for it'. Speaking exclusively to The Green Lane,Andrews is looking forward to next week's crucial match with Market: "I thought we fought well for each other today with everyone giving 110%, captain Craig Southen was back to his magnificent best, the return of BJ was a real boost and next week I have Leon Reed and club skipper Glenn Mackett available again". Bliby are a useful outfit and played their part in an entertaining game but goals from BJ Lockett and back to form Gary Mickelborough (2) saw the Green through. On the injury front, Kevin Barrett is carrying a knock while key defender Lee Gilham is according to Andrews "...only a few weeks away now".

Phil Wedge's team have not won since 16 December and their luck did not change today when they rattled the woodwork on several occasions. Lee Gilbert enjoyed a good game on his return to the Green whose consolation goals were provided by Leon Reed and Ashley Webster.

On a beautiful sun-drenched February afternoon (the wreck of a car still smouldering on the far pitch added to the effect) the much re-vamped Saturday first XI just about secured their place in the final of the prestigious Weald of Kent Cup final on Good Friday at Tenterden. Mark Bond opened the scoring with a thunderous header that unfortunately gave the visitors an early lead. Lee Milton finished off a slick move with aplomb to equalise only for Sam Cridland to edge Kennington ahead again, the stalwart left footer following up on a loose ball in the Green penalty box. Steve Harris restored parity before the break with a close range header. There wasn't much to choose between the sides in the second half but it was Harris who eventually secured the victory with a miscued shot that deceived Kennington's burly shot-stopper James Hayden. Both sides created chances that could have taken the tie either way but the Green hung on to record their second win on the bounce. A lot of credit must go to the Kennington team for a stirling performance that belies their position in the Eastern section of the County League. Loyal defender Mark Bond was the pick of the Green and the lads’ fantastic resolve to answer their critics has been duly rewarded with a place in the areas major showpiece. On a sad note, Peter and I find it very disturbing that an ex-Green manager is still attempting to lure players away from the club during the course of a season.

Green seconds miss out in penalty shoot-out cup thriller

For the second successive weekend a Green reserve team went out of a cup competition after the dreaded penalty shoot-out. The sides were locked at 2-2 after ninety minutes in this thrilling Ashford Charity Cup tie but the Green were almost there with a 3-2 advantage just seconds from the end of extra time. The Wanderers scrambled a leveller and again we made a mess of the spot kick deciders, prompting manager Gary Gibbs to say “It was a good game of football on a poor pitch, their keeper was superb, but the final result we will just have to put down as one of those things”. The Green’s goals came from Luke Stanley, Kevin Barrett and a deflected effort by Stuart Prior.

Sladden resigns due to work commitments

Young Under 15 coach Rupert Sladden has been forced to relinquish his post due to work commitments. Speaking exclusively to The Green Lane, Sladden said he could no longer do the job justice with his work making it almost impossible to attend matches and training sessions. Patron Dave Homewood thanked Sladden for his work on behalf of the club and hoped the former Millwall man would return when circumstances allow: "Rupert is like the rest of us, he has to work to pay his way in life; sadly Bromley Green cannot meet his wages and we have to accept that his career comes first. We all wish him well and I am sure he will be back home with us in the future in some capacity".

On a very bitterly cold day in Milton, the Green players showed what could be achieved if chances were taken.

A very dogged affair between the two sides where the Green started very slowly, but after a while started to play the better football and were rewarded with a spectacular finish by the very lively Ashley Webster.

With the first half nearing its end it looked like a job well done but a late corner with a poor clearance gifted Milton with an equaliser. In the second half the home side started well but with the introduction and welcomed return of Gary Mickelborough the tide started to turn into the Green’s favour and great football with pace soon rewarded us with three further goals thanks to Mickelborough a second from Webster and Steve Harris.

A late consolation goal from Milton finished the scoring 2-4 giving a first win for the new managers.

On a day when we thought our luck might change, the green's Sat first team produced an amazing display of character. Turning up on the day we felt very confident but this was very short lived when we realised that 5 yes 5 players were not going to turn up leaving Ciaran and I very bemused. After a very bright start by the green when after 10 minutes we could have been 1 0 up, it was left to an amazing display by Joe Mcquillan who denied Orpington 4 clear goals with fantastic saves. The always controversial off side law proved to be advantageous for the visitors as they went 1 up with barely minutes to spare. A good second half display by the green and if it wasn't for many squandered chances and a blatant penalty things may have turned out differently. It was left until the final 5 minutes when the visitors sealed the game with 2 late goals. The team played very well under difficult circumstances and thanks go to Gary Gibbs jnr and Danny Whitehorn for stepping in at late notice. Pick of the Green was Joe Mcquillan with a very special mention to Craig Smith who played the whole game as striker. It was a good day for the Saturday Reserves even though they didn't kick a ball with New Romney's table-topping second string suffering a shock 2-1 home reversal at the hands of APM Mears Reserves. The situation at the top now sees the Green with three games in hand, four points adrift and a superior goal difference. Next Saturday the lads travel to meet Bly Spartans who currently occupy third spot. In the Premier, the first team are hosts to second placed Orpington. On a wider front, Ashford Town did well to draw 1-1 away to Ryman South leaders Tooting & Mitcham while it is good to see Pat Kingwell and Marcus Hodges both on the scoresheet for Hythe in a 7-1 thrashing of Slade Green in the Kent League.

Kent Premier Cup draw real test for Green

The Green have just about the most difficult tie possible in the 5th round of the Kent Sunday Premier Cup which is scheduled for 3 February. We have to travel to meet Sun FC and if that hurdle is overcome a quarter-final home match awaits against the winners of Active and Temple on 2 March. Co-managers Dave Andrews and Jamie Allan are confident that the season can still bring trophy success and despite the gods seeming to conspire against us certainly have not relinquished the league title. What could prove crucial is the league deducting 3 points for the Dynamo win for playing the 'ineligible' Steve Wilson. Fair enough, it was a genuine admin error and we will take it on the chin...let's just hope this strict adherence to all rules applies to all teams.

UNDER 15s RE-ARRANGED FIXTURE

The Under 15 side face the title favourites Thanet on Sunday in a re-arranged East Kent Youth League fixture. The lads meet at the Swan Ground at midday for the trip which will really test the new found form of the lads.

The weather is certainly taking its toll on the fixtures and not for the first time we are in for a gruelling last three months or so of the season. I have had no news of today's cup semi-final involving the Reserves and Churchills...anyone know the outcome?

Most definitely the highlight of the New Year is the transformation of the Under 15s who won again today at Woodnesborough. Current player of the year, Jordan O'Gorman, received the man of the match accolade from manager Steve Mailey but it is also good to see former captain Aaron Neil and defender Jamie Hurst buzzing again and enjoying their football.  Netting the goals in a 3-1 success were Martyn Dalby, Dan Churchley and Keiran John. In an entertaining, end to end tie at Snodland, we can probably consider ourselves unlucky to come away with nothing as Snodland clinched the game 10 minutes from time with their second deflected goal of the match. However, it is through lapses in concentration & a strange desire to provide the opposition with opportunities that cost us dearly in the end. On all three Snodland goals, there were opportunities to clear the ball but a failure to do so ultimately cost us dearly. Once again we went into the game with a changed side, with both centre backs missing from the previous week. Lee Milton was drafted in at left back, with Mick Davies starting at right back & Mark Bond & Darren Moody taking up central defensive duties. All was well as we dominated the opening exchanges & deservedly took the lead via the excellent Tom Daweswho finished neatly after Paul Burt had mis-cued his first time shot from the edge of the box. Snodland swept back into the game & after equalising with a deflection off of Mark Bond's head, dominated the remainder of the first half with some slick passing that left the Green chasing shadows. It was inevitable that the Maidstone side took the lead on the brink of half time with the Green giving the ball away cheaply & then not reacting to a loose ball in the area. The second half started no better for the Green so changes were made to bulk up an over-run midfield quartet. Leon Reed entered the fray & duly demonstrated his physical qualities with his aerial dominance & no-nonsense attitude to winning the ball, whatever the cause. Slowly, we turned the game in our favour when we equalised via another Tom Daweseffort, this time at the second attempt. Instead of taking the game to Snodland, we once again switched off & the killer blow was struck when a defensive clearance fell to a Snodland forward whose strike appeared to be heading in the direction of the downs but hit the hapless Ben Stone on the back & flew in the top corner. Paul Burt & Steve Harris both had golden opportunities to salvage a point but as things are not going our way at the moment Burt's effort was cleared off the line & Harris' close range shot hit the Snodland keeper on the nose!!!

Young side gives hope for the future

The only County League sides in action on Saturday provided plenty of entertainment at the Swan Ground with the north Kent side eventually booking a place in the 4th round of the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield.Ciaran McQuillan was upbeat after the game and told The Green Linethat he and Peter [Intrieri] were proud of the boys and the spirit shown despite defeat and they were keenly looking forward to the upcoming challenge of what really matters, climbing up the league table. In fact, the young Green team looked the better side for much of the tie but paid the price for a host of wasted opportunities, including a missed penalty.Skipper Glenn Mackett and wide man Steve Harris had twice put the home side ahead but the visitors, reduced to ten men for much of the second period, caught the Green rearguard napping with two long balls as both sides went for the win at 2-2.McQuillan drew many positives from the match including the form of Charlie Clark and a steady start for Darren Moody. Next week the lads have a crucial fixture away to Snodland.

Patron’s seasonal message

Reflecting upon the past year throws up the usual mixed memories of achievement and disappointment; the extreme emotions of joy and abject sadness; leading to consideration of how we can all strive to make 2008 a year of collective and self development within what is still a very special club.

There has been sadness during the year, most recently with the passing of former player Barry Cunningham, and my thanks to Ciaran McQuillan for representing the club at Wednesday’s funeral. Barry in fact spent more years with Bromley Green than any other football club; although his latter days were with Dynamo and Ashford Town.There are no suitable words and all we can do is offer Jim and the family our heartfelt condolences. The death of former club captain Tommy Stafford came as a terrible personal shock. I joined the Green as a young schoolboy and deem myself as privileged to have played alongside and later co-managed with Tommy for many years … a special person of integrity who earned eternal respect.

Things have been difficult of late and, with three team managers resigning in the space of a month, the year has not exactly ended quite as planned! However, I am sure Clive, Mark and Lee will all wish to stay involved when the dust settles. Dave Andrews, Jamie Allan, Steve Mailey, Peter Intrieri and Ciaran have each committed themselves to important team management roles and I am truly thankful to them.

Despite fluctuating fortunes on and off the field, I am confident the future is bright, that our restructuring will eventually be proved right, and that we will make progression. With characters that bring passion and experience [such as Alvin Gigg, Ian Holloway and Mark Day] again regular faces at matches, how can anyone be pessimistic? My thanks are extended to all the players for their efforts during the year; to fellow officers and managers, supporters and helpers for continuing to give freely of their valuable time. The world wide web has kept many of our former members in touch and it is always pleasing to hear from you.

I wish all Bromley Green people, wherever you are, a peaceful Christmas and a New Year that delivers contentment and fulfilment to you and your families.

Ciaran McQuillan and Peter Intrieri have acted swiftly to replace those players  who left at the same time as Clive Cook's departure. Full details later but the new Saturday first management team are confident they have a squad that can in time climb up the table. Doubtful starter again this week is Craig Southen while the news concerning Lee Gilham is still not encouraging. This Saturday hopefully the much-postponed cup tie with Orpington can take place at the Swan Ground (1.30pm).

Club moves quick to appoint new managers

Following the resignation of Lee Ealham on Sunday, the club has appointed Dave Andrews and Jamie Allan as joint managers of the Sunday firsts with Mark Day continuing in his supportive role. Ian Ross has been asked to make a decision on how he sees his role as the side looks to recover from recent humiliating defeats against Kennington and Market.

Steve Mailey accepts youth job

The club is pleased to announce that Steve Mailey has accepted the job as manager of the Under 15s after talks last week following the sudden resignation of Mark Acott. Mailey, recovering from an operation that has kept him away from football in recent weeks, will meet the players and management team before the next fixture away to White Cliffs Rangers on 6 January. Steve will combine his duties with those at Ashford Cavaliers in the Sunday morning league. Green youth coach Rupert Sladden told The Green Line "We had a brilliant training session tonight and myself and the boys cannot wait to work with Steve. With a couple of new signings lined up, I am confident we can make real progress and build for stability next season."

Sunday reserves go joint top of table

This keenly contested Division Two clash at the Swan Ground was settled by a goal in each half as the Green moved up to joint top of the table. Early exchanges were not for the faint hearted, with Richard Floyd receiving a caution from referee Geoff Stanborough. Clear cut openings were at a premium and it was evident that the first goal would have a telling influence on the final outcome. Matt Wedge was rewarded for his persistency by gaining half a yard to smash home and give the home side a slender half time advantage. The second period saw both sides enjoy spells of dominance but the Green always held firm and the points were clinched when Ashley Webster slid in number two. Late on Jason Thomas and Webster again had chances to increase the tally but with Jamie Dobbin busy in midfield and Shaun Dadd looking safe in goal, the Green were now largely in control. Phil Wedge praised the whole squad for their endeavours but knows the lads will need to be up for it when the sides meet again in the New Year in the Divisional Cup. Ex Green man Mark Mason notched a personal tally of four in a 7-0 humiliation away to Market in the Premier Cup. Full details are not in but the ramifications of this result are sure to be deep.

Worst display of season as Reserves suffer cup defeat

Bromley Green's second string were quite frankly awful in this afternoon's much-awaited Reserves Division Cup clash at the Swan Ground which the Blues won 4-1. Individual errors did not help but there has to be a collective acceptance that this was a below par performance. Every year we make a hash of the cups and it appears this time round is no exception. The old adage that now we concentrate on the league gives little comfort to the Green squad whose goal came from Stuart Prior. A trip to Bearsted next Saturday provides a chance to get the show back on the road.

The first team game (ironically switched to Orpington to get the match played) was called off due to burst water pipes. Hopefully next Saturday the Swan Ground will be fit to finally get the game out of the way.

Thursday 13 December snippets

MARK ACOTT RESIGNS

Mark Acott, the current holder of the Chairmans Award for Endeavour, resigned from the post of U15s manager after training on Tuesday night. The club, which is not prepared to divulge Mark's reasons for leaving, wishes to publicly thank him for keeping the side going last year against all odds in the East kent Youth League. Patron Dave Homewood and Chairman Stan Donald are interviewing over the next few days and a successor is likely to be announced before Sunday's home game with Thanet Colts. The squad is to meet at 12.30 for a 2pm kick off.

YOUTH CLUBMAN AWARD TO BE RENAMED TOMMY STAFFORD MEMORIAL AWARD

The legendary former club captain, manager and Vice President of Bromley Green, Tommy Stafford, who died suddenly earlier this year is to be honoured by the club.  The Youth Clubman of the Year Award is to be renamed the 'Tommy Stafford Memorial Award' and the new trophy [with all the previous winners engraved upon it] will be presented for the first time at this season's presentation dinner.

Barry Cunningham loses fight for life
It is with deep sadness that we report the death of former Bromley Green striker Barry Cunningham who lost his fight against bowel cancer on Saturday. Barry came up through the youth ranks, where his enthusiasm and love of the game was an example to all, before going on to play 165 senior matches for the club and netting 75 goals. In recent years, his teams have included Crusader, Aldington and Ashford Reserves. Everyone at the club sends heartfelt condolences to his family.

Robbie Bower became the second Green player this weekend to strike a hat trick as the second string pulled off a magnificent away victory to keep their title aspirations very much alive. Completing the scoring in an excellent match despite the atrocious weather, were Ashley Webster and Matt Wedge. Next week the side makes the short trip to play local rivals Crusader in another vital league encounter (10.30am).

Losing our title last season was a bitter pill to swallow but the signs are that there is strength enough in depth to reclaim it after a comprehensive away win on Saturday. Lydd Reserves, propping up the table, were never going to worry table-toppers Green but this victory proved all the more valuable with Borden Reserves having their home game postponed. The situation at the head of the Reserves Division East now sees New Romney Reserves, Bly Spartans Reserves and Borden all breathing down our neck and, although they each have games in hand, the old adage of ‘points in the bag’ starts to come into play. The lethal finishing of Ashley Webster (2) and Anthony Davies, with a terrific hat trick, put the gloss on a solid all round team performance; while Sean Gibbs was the manager’s man of the match. Next week there is a chance to increase the pressure on the chasing pack when lowly Larkfield & New Hythe Reserves visit the Swan Ground. Dale Mackett takes the whistle for a tussle that kicks off at 2pm.

With the first team game called off due to the sodden ground, attention already turns to next Saturday when Ciaran McQuillan and Peter Intrieri face the daunting task of keeping quiet a Norton Sports forward line that is rattling in goals this term. Norton increased their grip on the top spot in the Premier with a thumping 4-1 victory at Lewisham but this is the kind of game that sorts the men from the boys and the Green lads have a real chance to make a name for themselves. Kick off at Norton is again at 2pm.

Sunday Reserves into Cup Semi Final

A cold Sunday brought plenty of cheer to the Green with Phil Wedge's Sunday Reserves moving into the last four of the Divisional Cup with a well-deserved win against visiting Egerton. Ashley Webster again provided the cutting edge with a typical opportunist hat trick but this was a splendid all round squad performance. Richard Floyd and the returning Ryan Holloway played soundly at the back alongside Tom Poyner and Ricky Milton while in midfield there was plenty of drive from Wedge, Major and the evergreen Robbie Bower.

Following on the top pitch, the U15s played some of their best football of the season and only two late goals from a lack of concentration gave visitors Park Farm Rangers any consolation. In the end the Green ran out 5-2 victors with the goals coming from Jamie Hurst, Reece Murrell 2, Reece Calahane and Jack Blowers. Murrell received the man of the match accolade, Hurst was outstanding at left back,  and there were excellent performances from Martin Dalby, Jordan O'Gorman and Joe Barton. Next week the two sides lock horns again at The Ridge (2pm).

Clive Cook "Unlucky...the story of our season"

Lewisham stole the points from a 2-1 win at the Swan Ground on Saturday after the Green had gone ahead following a superb move between Marcus Hodges and David Cook that was finished off by Glenn Mackett. Retiring manager Clive Cook said he could not have asked any more from the lads but perhaps goals and that "...that has been the story of our season so far". Next week the side entertain Orpington in a cup match with Peter Intrieri and Ciaran McQuillan looking after things until the end of the season.

Following next Saturday’s home game with Lewisham, Clive Cook is standing down as the Bromley Green FC Saturday First Team manager. This was not expected by the Club and in Clive’s words is based on ‘personal reasons’ away from football. Clive has reiterated his love for this Club and it has been agreed he is given some ‘space’ while he deals with certain private matters. In due course the Club will be sitting down with Clive and discussing his future role. I use this opportunity to thank Clive for efforts over the years and look forward to meeting with him and discussing the future when he feels the time is right. The Patron, Chairman and a senior Vice-President have made a temporary appointment until the end of this season; after which time the position will be reviewed. Full details will be published after Saturday’s match. Out of respect to Clive, the Club expects all of its senior players to remain loyal to the cause and to continue to strive for excellence with Bromley Green FC.

The Green were 3-1 down with 6 minutes to go but fought back to move into the next round of the Ashford Charity Trophy following extra time. Manager Lee Ealham said “We were poor for much of the game and we are leaking goals; but I was pleased that we never gave up. All credit to the reserve boys Tom Poyner and Jason Thomas who were drafted in”. Netting the goals against the side that knocked us out last term were Tom Lockett, Danny Valler, John Douglas and skipper Glenn Mackett 2 (1 pen). The seconds had no game but next week are at home to either Albion or Egerton in the league.

A Marcus Hodges goal was of little consolation to the Saturday first team in a 4-1 defeat at Hollands & Blair but the seconds had better luck in the Ashford Charity Trophy, winning 7-0 at Wittersham. On target were Tom Poyner, Lee Milton, Stuart Prior (2) Jimmy Pickard and Ashley Webster (2).

Disaster day for local sides in Inter-Regional Challenge Cup

Today just wasn’t one to remember for our local clubs in the second round of the Inter-Regional Challenge Cup with the Green going down 4-1 at Hollands & Blair, Lydd losing 3-0 on their visit to lowly Milton and Kennington suffering a crushing 6-2 home defeat by Guru Nanak. Next week Clive and the boys entertain Lewisham in an attempt to close the 21-point gap opened up at the top of the Premier by leaders Norton Sports. With Lee Gilham and Danny Barham having their seasons ruined by injury and midfielder Scott McRobert suspended until February these are not easy times. Norton themselves are at home to Fleet. Our table-topping Reserves will be hoping lowly Platt Heath United Reserves can take something from their trip to our main rivals Borden who have two games in hand over the Green.

10/11 November 2007 Weekend round-up

Super Saturday, Sad Sunday

Two convincing victories saw the Green begin the weekend brightly only for Sunday to witness two surprise home defeats. Bearsted Reserves were never going to be a real threat in the Weald of Kent Charity Cup and the lads strolled home (report to follow…Joe do this if ok please) while the Reserves pulled off a fine 3-1 away win against APM Mears Reserves. In an ill-tempered game, which saw Tom Poyner suffer a broken nose, the goals came from Stuart Prior with two, one from the penalty spot, and one from Poyner himself. According to Steve Wilson, the spirit in the side is ‘phenomenal’ and we have gained results in our last two matches through the togetherness.

On Sunday the first team were embarrassed 4-1 on their home ground by local rivals Kennington. A Glenn Mackett goal was of little use to the Green who now face an uphill fight to hang onto their precious crown. No respite for the lads who next week entertain highly rated Essembee who knocked us out of the Ashford Charity Trophy last term.

With the Sunday Reserves game at Churchills called off due to a lack of a referee, attention turned to the Under 15s who seemed determined to follow in their seniors footsteps with a less than convincing display. A goal down in the first few seconds to Dynamo United, the boys fought back to equalise through Dan Churchley but ended the day well beaten. For twenty minutes the Green, with defender Jordan O’Gorman and midfielder Aaron Neil looking good, held the initiative but it was with long punt breakaways that the visitors nicked their goals. Although George Wall netted from the spot in the second half, the miserable 6-2 scoreline tells its own story. Next Sunday the boys make the short trip to the North School to meet Highfield.

Following a 4-0 win over Brabourne, the Thursday night sixers find themselves top of the table in the Towers competition. On target for the Green were Sean Gibbs and hat-trick man Luke Stanley.

The day’s top tie in the Kent Sunday Premier Cup lived up to its billing with a keenly contested battle at the Swan Ground that ended in favour of the in-form Green. Sporting almost a complete squad of ex-Green players, the visitors started the strongest and went ahead through a ridiculous penalty decision that would have been funny had it not been in such an important match. Even without the pace and menace of the injured Gary Mickelborough, the Green began to take control, Lee Milton hitting a post, and it came as no surprise when David Cook headed home a Marcus Hodges free kick before half time. The second period was typical, gutsy Green, with the spirit in the side now evident for all to see as three wonderful saves by Joe McQuillan kept the visitors at bay. Cometh the hour as they say and former youth team player Kevin Barrett, in his biggest match since his return to the local scene, snatched the games crucial third goal to edge the Green in front after excellent work by Hodges and Kingwell and hesitancy by visiting keeper Dan Noden. To their credit, the pub side kept plugging away but it was all over when skipper Glenn Mackett hammered home a spot kick for a 3-1 scoreline. So McQuillan and Barrett were the heroes but beaming managers Lee Ealham and Ian Ross knew there was much more to it than that; this was a squad effort with all the lads playing with purpose and great determination. As Ealey said, "...we were patchy in spells but well worth our win and Joe is repaying the faith the club has shown in him...it was a top class performance. Now the Market game is over we must concentrate on the league and we will be taking the game with Kennington very seriously. As usual, everybody wants to beat us but we are on a winning streak now". Green: J McQuillan; C Southen, C Petts, S Skillett, D Valler, L Milton, D Cook, G Mackett, K Barrett, P Kingwell, M Hodges. Sub: L Ealham. Next Sunday the side faces perhaps its most difficult test to date when making the short trip to meet old friends Kennington (10.30am).

Not such good news from the second string camp after a 4-0 drubbing away to Market Reserves. The side was without Stuart Watson and Robbie Bower (injured) and Charlie Clarke (suspended) but that is no excuse for what Phil Wedge described as “…a poor performance; it was a bad day at the office…”. New signing Paul Ledger was welcomed to the club.

Cup defeat but brave effort by youngsters [U15 Cup]

Playing against a team from two divisions higher, the Green put up a brave performance in the cup on Sunday afternoon at the Swan Ground. We rode our luck a shade but when Dan Churchley pulled us level at 1-1 a major shock seemed possible. Some good saves by keeper Martin Bugden and enthusiastic midfield work by Ashley and Aaron made for a much closer scoreline than many anticipated.

Hodges treble the highlight

Marcus Hodges hit yet another hat trick as the Green moved comfortably into the third round of the Kent Intermediate Shield. Danny Barham only lasted ten minutes and there are worries over his long-term fitness as the midfielder has only played a handful of games in recent months. Glenn Mackett with a penalty and Craig Southen netted the other Green goals in a surprisingly easy win. There is more cup action next Saturday when Bearsted Reserves are the visitors for a Weald of Kent Charity Cup match (1.45pm). The leading sides in league action cashed in, with Norton Sports winning 6-0 at Milton and Orpington hammering former giants Bearsted 7-0.

Away win keeps Reserves in touch at the top

An excellent match that maintains our interest in the chase for honours with the goals coming from A Davies, K Barrett and S Gibbs 2. Main problem is that leaders Borden keep winning as well, this week 3-0 at Oakwood. Next Saturday the team is away to APM Mears Reserves in another vital league encounter.

Gilham broken leg

After all this time, Lee Gilham has been told by specialists that he has broken his leg after all. Everybody in the club hopes to see him back playng before too long.

Ealham: Bring on Market

Lee Ealham is hoping for the rarity of a full squad to pick from next Sunday when Market provide the opposition at the Swan Ground for the plum tie in the second round of the Kent Sunday Premier Cup. To reach this stage, the Green had to overcome Tonbridge Invicta after extra time in round one while Market received a walkover when Bearsted dropped out of the competition. Long-term injury victim Lee Gilham is a definite non-starter for a clash that Ealham views as a must-win game. "We need to keep our winning momentum going and it is pleasing that, with people coming into the squad doing so well, we face really difficult selection decisions. At The Rype we did enough in windy and bumpy conditions to see off Grasshoppers in the Bodkin but Rossi and myself will be looking to step up a level next Sunday".

On target for the Green at Lydd were Lee Milton, skipper Glenn Mackett with a brace [one from the penalty spot], Marcus Hodges and Gary Mickelborough with a wind-assisted cross.

Meanwhile at the Swan Ground the Reserves were recording an emphatic 8-1 victory over Locomotive to keep up their challenge at the head of the table. The goals were provided by Matt Wedge 2, Ashley Webster 2, James Major 2, Darryl Hagger and Chris Burden. Phil Wedge is adamant his side can make a serious bid for the title and is looking forward to next Sunday's short trip to face Market Reserves.

Clive Cook talks exclusively to The Green Lane and reflects upon the 3-3 draw at Cray

"What should have been an ideal game for us to start climbing the table turned into another disappointing result with Danny Barham again failing a pre-match fitness test and both Darren Hover and Harry Hrehorow having to go off near the end of the first half. Hover has a hamstring pull while Hrehorow suffered a knee injury and add this to Craig Southen’s red card, a penalty, five goals and for the neutral it was certainly an entertaining first half. Pat Kingwell gave us the lead from a free kick, before Cray levelled, and then Glenn Mackett netted from the spot after Hrehorow had been crudely chopped down in the box. Hrehorow had to be carried off and the home side levelled before Marcus Hodges scored a beautiful goal, getting onto the end of Buster Beaney’s free kick. With Southen off after defending himself against being forearm smashed in the back of the head, we were down to ten men and then Hover had to leave the field. Chris Gilham came on at right back and Chris Petts switched to centre with Tommy Dawes on at the right of midfield. The second period was typical of the Green, with real spirit shown as our backs were against the wall. But with time virtually up, it had to happen! A penalty to them following a handball by Pogo: 3-3. Still we should have won it when Hodges was brought down in the box when clean through but the referee waved play on and blew his whistle for full time. A very eventful game but the story of our season…injuries, suspensions, no luck."

Details not in yet but Clive will not be happy with just a point at mediocre Cray and these are 'must-win' games if we are to be in with a fighting chance of the main prize. More worrying is the barnstorming form of Norton Sports who won again to extend their lead at the top to 15 points.

Reserves lose 5-3 at Eccles in Kent Junior Cup

On target for the seconds were S Gibbs, L Reed and A Davies. Four goals down after 25 minutes, the lads actually 'won' the second half 3-1. But it's back to concentrating on catching Borden in the league for Gary Gibbs and Steve Wilson with a trip to Platt United Reserves next week now the main focus.

Clive Cook's exclusive report to The Green Line on the Hollands & Blair defeat

"Saturday started as the last nine have, with Danny Barham crying off with the injury he sustained last week to add to the lengthy injury list. But still I could put out a side which really should have gained the three points against a high flying Hollands side which do play very good football. Dan Noden (back after being away) was at fault with the first, running out 20 yards from his box to clear a back pass which he completely missed, and allowing the striker to put into an empty net. A 1-0 calamity at its best. Then 2-0 just before the break, scored by a striker who really was a cut above anything else on the pitch, a beautiful 20-yard volley from a quality player. Half time was probably the most eventful since I have been manager of the side as we aired views, strong talk to say the least and the boys knew how bad they had performed. I made changes with Hodges coming on for Hrehorow and it is amazing what a few strong words can do with the boys putting in their best half of football/effort/determination this season. Chris Gilham pulled one back following good work by Cookie and we battered Hollands totally in the second half; but more misses, notably by Hodges who missed the goal completely with a on-on-one with the keeper, which was followed by them breaking away and a wicked defelction...3-1; when your luck is down these things happen. Still we came back to 3-2 through Cookie but with luck and some tremendous defending Hollands snatched the points. Their manager came up to me afterwards and said that if it was a boxing match we would have won on points by a mile but I don't want niceties. We will get through this without a doubt and if they show me the commitment they did in the second half we will be fine".

Sunday sides both win

It was a good day for the club's two senior Sunday sides with the firsts winning 8-3 at Swinford Manor against a spirited Ashford Cavaliers team that had taken an early lead and the seconds putting themselves right in the frame at the head of Division Two with a fine 2-0 victory over leaders Appledore. On target for the firsts were Marcus Hodges with a hat trick, Gary Mickelborough, Lee Milton, Glenn Mackett from the penalty spot, Danny Valler and a hapless home defender following good work by substitute 'left winger' Lee Ealham. Next week the boys are down the road at Lydd to face Grasshoppers in a Bodkin Cup tie.

Meanwhile, at the Swan Ground, the seconds were well worth their 2-0 success against the Dore who only threatened in short spells. Tom Poyner, Charlie Clark and Kevin Barrett caught the eye for the Green who netted twice during the second half through Ashley Webster and Matt Wedge. Next Sunday sees another home game with Locomotive the visitors for a 10.30 kick off.

The Green slipped up at home to Hollands & Blair today with the 3-2 setback seeing us now 10 points behind unbeaten leaders Norton Sports who trounced Crockenhill 9-1. Second placed Orpington also went crazy, hitting Milton with an eight goal haul. Next week we need to get back in the winning groove when travelling to meet Cray Valley. Goals from Chris Gilham and David Cook will prove of little consolation to team manager Clive Cook who knows the Green must take something from home games if the title is to remain within reach. Meanwhile Gary Gibbs was delighted with his charges as the reserves pulled off another terrific away win at Otford United thanks to goals by Leon Reed, Ashley Webster 2 and substitute Anthony Davies. The boys are now up to second in the table following a less than flying start and next in sight are leaders Borden who are unbeaten and lead the Green by one point with two games in hand. There is a break from league action next Saturday when we travel to Eccles for a Kent Junior Cup match.

Tomorrow morning (Sunday 21 October) the Reserves are at home to Appledore and this is followed immediately with a rearranged friendly between the Green U15s and Park Farm Rangers. The boys are grateful for the fantastic support they are receiving this season from senior club members and parents ... and win or lose it is never  boring with Mark Acott's side!

Smudger donation

Bromley Green FC legend Tony 'Smudger' Smith has forwarded a cash donation to the club with best wishes from himself and Carole. Midfielder Smudger made many memorable performances for the Green until his retirement four seasons ago. Patron Dave Homewood described Smith as "...very brave after recovery from serious illness; a 'players player' respected by all the youngsters; he was also a manager's dream with his attitude and outstanding ability and will always be affectionately regarded as part of the Green family. I know Tony keeps close tabs on our progress and his contribution will be put to good use".

Sixers win again

Bromley Green continued their excellent form in the six-a-side tournament at The Towers on Thursday night with a 4-2 victory over All Stars. The squad was Joe McQuillan, Gary Gibbs, Sean Gibbs, Steve Wilson, Lee Williams, Ashley Webster, Darryl Hagger. On target: S Gibbs 2, G Gibbs, S Wilson

GOALFEST AS GREEN TEAMS SMASH IN 25

Centre back Clark nets six!

Our two Sunday senior sides rattled in an incredible 25 goals today and leading the way was reserves central defender Charlie Clark with a personal tally of six! The seconds walloped poor Red Heathens Reserves 19-0 with home manager Phil Wedge claiming that "...the score flattered them". Also on target to boost our goal-difference were Matt Wedge (5), Ashley Webster (3), Chris Burden (2), James Major, Jason Thomas and Ricky Milton.

Kingwell treble as Green prove too strong for Brews

Pat Kingwell returned to action and claimed a hat trick at Hopes Grove as the Sunday firsts recorded a useful 6-2 victory against High Halden outfit Brewmaster. The Green's [enforced!] rotation system hasn't always looked too convincing this term but the lads are grinding out results and not many sides will come away from the Brews with maximum points. Other scorers for a rampant Green were Glenn Mackett, Marcus Hodges and Gary Mickelborough.

Saturday 13.10.07: Firsts suffer surprise 3-1 defeat at Coney Hall

Cook: I will make changes for next Saturday

Saturday first team manager Clive Cook could not hide his disappointment after a shock 3-1 setback at Coney Hall. "I had seven players missing from the Lewisham game, where we were superb, but that is no excuse as the side put out today was more than capable of doing the business". A long-range free kick from defender Buster Beaney was little consolation for Cook who continued "We were bullied out of the contest today and the goals we gave away, coupled with the host of missed chances, leave me very unhappy.  At this level you cannot afford to keep squandering opportunities or you get punished on the break, and that's just what happened.  Mackett, Beaney and Burt all should have netted when we were on top. We had a 'clear the air' talk after the game but apart from Ben Spilstead and Craig Southen no-one can be happy with their level of performance. I will be making changes for next Saturday and believe we can still do things this season".

Milton hat trick boosts reserves cup bid

In recent years the second string have done remarkably well, including of course winning the league the season before last; but the one area of abject disappointment has been our falure to shine in the cups. Perhaps that is about to change as the lads completely outplayed visiting Larkfield in this Divisional cup tie on Saturday. Lee Milton was again in top form, hitting a splendid hat trick, with the tally made up by Ashley Webster, Leon Reed and substitute Tom Poyner. Next week the squad travels to meet Otford in a league game.
