Sunday’s games, away to Brewmaster for the firsts and home to Galacticos for the reserves, were both called off due to frozen, dangerous playing surfaces. Next Sunday the firsts welcome Kennington to the Swan Ground for a Premier Cup tie while the reserves travel to table-topping Appledore in Division Two.

Firsts have wasted trip but Green Reserves notch great win

An annoying Saturday afternoon for the firsts who travelled to Hollands & Blair only for the pitch to be clearly unplayable and postponed by the ref without a ball being kicked. Dave Smith had a strong squad together including new striker Andy Wood. Next Saturday the side is in cup action with New Romney the visitors.

On a much more positive note, at the Swan Ground, the Green seconds kept their noses in front at the top of the Reserves Division with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over previously unbeaten Bearsted Reserves. Jimmy Pickard and Tom Poyner set up Matt Wedge to hit into an empty net to give us a slender lead after a goalless first half in which veteran keeper Lee Williams made two outstanding stops. An evenly fought affair was settled towards the end when Poyner lashed home from the edge of the box. A terrific effort by all the lads who next week travel to fellow title aspirants Otford Reserves. Frozen pitches restricted the action today but there were defeats for both Marsh outfits with Romney losing 2-0 at Otford and Lydd Town going down 3-1 away to APM Mears. In the Reserves Division, where just 4pts separate the leading 7 sides, Kennington Reserves beat APM Mears Reserves 2-1, Lydd Reserves slumped 3-1 at home to Borden Village Reserves and Romney’ second string lost 3-2 at Oakwood.

Another twelve months have sped past and I once again have the pleasure as Patron of Bromley Green FC to wish all our friends near and far a happy, peaceful Christmas and a New Year that sees your hopes fulfilled.

It has not been an easy year, either on or off the field of play, with a sizeable number of long-standing Green players and indeed managers deciding to leave the club for various reasons. We can only thank them for past services and wish them all well in their new pastures. My job, our job, is to steady the ship and ensure that the Green flag is flying high. Historically our club has met adversity head-on and emerged triumphant and, just as in the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s when things periodically went pear-shaped, we will bounce back even stronger than ever. On the field, all of our teams play at a decent level leaving few openings for experimentation with our marvellous group of promising youngsters. However, whilst I accept we are rebuilding, I view the term ‘period of transition’ as something of a metaphor for accepting mediocrity and the sooner we are back where we belong on Saturdays and Sundays the better.

The year 2008 has been, and indeed still is, difficult for some very close to the heart of the club and my thoughts are with you during what I know are personal ordeals and heartbreaks that push human coping mechanisms to their extremes. Together we must offer support whenever the call comes and cherish the great spirit we have within our organisation. Together we will make 2009 a year to remember for all the right reasons. My thanks to all fellow officers, supporters, helpers, managers, sponsors and of course the players for their endeavours during the past year.

To all Green people, and football lovers in general, wherever you are, have an enjoyable Christmas and a successful 2009.

Dave Smith reflects on Saturday’s game and the season so far

Another disappointing result losing to 1-0 to a well organised Hollands and Blair team. The first half was mainly controlled by the visitors, but stubborn defending and poor finishing saw us go in level. The second half saw the game open up more and I felt we competed well but we never really created enough. On the hour from a half cleared corner the visitors took the lead, with a good finish from the edge of the box. We did rally and tried hard for the equaliser, our best chance falling to Chris Holmes whose cross shot just skimmed the post. For all our efforts we could not level the game and ended up losing 1-0. In all honesty a fair result in a game where we failed to get going; we can and have played a lot better than this, perhaps the 3 week lay off had affected our momentum. Review

We have now reached the half way point of 14 league games and the end of 2008. Overall I am pleased with the way the side is coming together, thinking back to August and the mass exodus of so many Green regulars from previous seasons I did wonder how the season would pan out. My first 5 months in charge of the team has been both enjoyable and frustrating, but I can assure everyone involved with the club that I am 100% committed to making the Saturday 1st team successful and helping the club in any way for us all to get back to the glory days that were enjoyed in years past. My squad is now around 18 players with 11 of these still 19 or under; the spirit between the lads is improving all the time. Training is going well now with good numbers and a pleasing thing for me is that I easily get my squad together for each match as the boys are all committed to the team. I know our league position is disappointing and 11 points from 14 games with only 3 wins is not good, but I do believe given the time and if we stick together, we can become a force in the premier league. We all know the club is in the process of rebuilding all its sides and in my opinion the group of lads I have are some of the best talent in Ashford and I am privileged to be working with them. We have 14 league games to go and we will need at least the same return that we have now to stay clear of the relegation zone. I am confident we will do this. We are also still in 3 cups, 2 at the last 16 stage and 1 quarter final to look forward to and I would love to see us get to a final as it would be a good reward for the effort the boys have put in this season so far. Finally I would just like to say a Happy Christmas to all players, supporters, and committee members at the club and lets hope 2009 brings the Green the success we all strive for.

Sunday update…

Sunday was a bad day for the Green with the firsts going out of the Bodkin Cup by way of a 5-3 defeat at Bliby and the seconds crashing 4-1 at home to title aspirants Appledore. At Sandyhurst Lane, it was a great spectacle for the neutrals but for the Green the continual change of personnel on match days is proving costly. With work commitments, holidays,  and one key player not showing up, it was always going to be a difficult tie and the Green found themselves 3-0 behind. In truth but for some great saves by Craig Smith it could have been worse. However, the reshuffled side deserves praise for a tremendous fightback in a contest that at one stage deemed destined for extra time. There were some real positives as the rebuilding continues with newcomers Michael Thomas, Glen Rolfe and Karl Seni each performing well. The boys now rest until 4 January when another stiff test awaits as we go to Brewmaster in the Ashford Charity. To get back to winning ways, we must have the stability that breeds confidence and gives shape to our play. Good luck to Bliby in the next round. A Charlie Clark goal at the Swan Ground is little consolation as Appledore cruised home. Bright spot for Phil Wedge is young Joe Barton who came off the bench to impress. No game for the reserves until 4 January either.

Our last game was against the same opponents away and despite a good performance we were beaten 3-1; but this does seem to be the norm for us, giving all teams a good game, coming away with credit, but no points. We have a young side, who need to develop together, but this league is very unforgiving; but I am convinced if we continue to progress the way we are, we will become a major force in the county league. “It may be the holiday period but this is a huge weekend for our famous old club”

If ever there was a weekend when we needed just that little bit of the rub of the green, it is the final Saturday and Sunday matches of what has been a turbulent 2008. Human nature has meant that many [envious] pundits across the county have waited for us to fall but that has never been on my radar and I am genuinely proud of the five sides that represent us. The managers know they have total support from the Executive and I can only see the good times returning in the very near future. But as we all know, we are only as good as our last game and the Saturday firsts need no reminding that playing good football alone does not guarantee dividends. That is why I hope as many as possible can be at the game on Saturday against high-riding Hollands & Blair to urge the boys to a victory that will make Christmas that much happier. In Dan Cornell, Chris Holmes and Ryan Norman, we have a potent attacking force that on its day can rip sides apart and team chief Dave Smith will be desperate for the lads to deliver on what has become a big occasion. Our chances will not be helped with skipper Glenn Mackett unavailable and Smith (Ryan) and Norman (Ryan) missing through suspension.

Chris Holmes carries the Green’s hopes in crucial fixture

Alfied Pickard and lads sit proudly at the top of the table but along with assistant manager Trent Thomas, they will not take University of Kent Reserves lightly. The students are the current champions and we have had some wonderful games with them over many years. Quite frankly, with the league so tight again this season, all we are concerned with is taking maximum points.

Turning to Sunday morning, we face a testing Bodkin Cup tie at Bliby but if we are in the mood, we can beat them again. Having not played much football over the past two months, the lads will probably be rusty but new faces will again add interest as we continue the rapid rebuild. The squad as we go to publish is: Craig Smith; Michael Thomas, Dean Rolfe, John Lockett, Bryn Williams, Matt Hadlum, Liam Holman, Danny Valler, Glen Rolfe, Gary Mickelborough, Glenn Mackett, Ben Henaghan, Lee Milton, Kevin Barrett, Robbie Greenfield, Matthew Munday, Terry Perk, Tom Poyner. Definitely out are broken ankle victim Joe Hopkins and wide man Jason Thomas who is to be rested until the New Year as he awaits diagnosis of a recurring injury.

At the Swan Ground, Phil Wedge has pledged to continue with the policy of building with youth and has promised at least one new signing [in addition to Green youngsters Joe Barton and Reece Murrell]  will be in the squad to tackle leaders Appledore in what should be a game full of entertaining football. The seconds will look to Lee Bloxham to keep up his knack of snatching vital goals. The Under 16s have no game until 18 January next year. Although it is the holiday period, this is a huge weekend for our famous old club and I hope as many of us as possible can be there to cheer the lads on. A quick reminder to all friends of the club that everybody is welcome for a seasonal get-together/drink on Saturday 27 December, meeting at The Phoenix at 1pm. SATURDAY NIGHT ROUND-UP

Little action for our local sides with the rain again ruining fixtures right across the county. There were no County League Premier games and the only match in the Reserves Division One East section saw last year’s runners-up  New Romney Reserves keep up their challenge with an easy 6-0 defeat of visiting Larkfield Reserves. Looking forward to next week, the Green have a difficult hurdle to overcome in the shape of Hollands & Blair while the Saturday Reserves travel to reigning champions University of Kent Reserves. Sunday sees us once again at Sandyhurst Lane to meet Bliby in the Bodkin Cup with the seconds entertaining in-form title aspirants Appledore at the Swan Ground. The Under 16s have a long break now until the 18 January when we go to Thanet Colts. Let’s hope for a drying week!

Friday night update (12.12.2008)

Sheerness call Saturday’s game off

Saturday’s crucial Kent County League fixture on the Isle of Sheppey has been called off by Sheerness. This is a big dampener as the Green were confident of bringing back maximum points. Patron Dave Homewood said “This is typical of our season. I’ve no doubt the lads would have done the business tomorrow, gained the three points and opened some daylight up between us and the bottom cluster. Now, who knows, we could well have to travel up there at some incovenient time when they have improved their form. I don’t know why the game is off but it is most disappointing for Dave Smith and all concerned”.

The weekend ahead

More crucial games for all our teams this weekend with both Saturday sides facing bottom of the table opponents: away to Sheerness East and home to APM Mears Reserves. The Sunday firsts are already without Bryn Williams, Terry Perk, Jason Thomas and captain Glenn Mackett for the short trip to Ashford Cavaliers but Dave Homewood will again be calling on Kevin Barrett to return and provide that something extra that he always brings to the side. The rebuilding continues with Glen Rolfe, Michael Thomas and Liam Holman all in a revamped squad as the Green experiment with their line-up. At the Swan Ground, the Sunday Reserves welcome Churchills. Both games kick off at 10.30am. Sunday afternoon sees the big top of the table clash with the Green entertaining Betteshanger (2pm).

Bloxham debut double earns fighting cup win

Reece Murrell hat trick sinks local rivals

Only two games due to waterlogged pitches but nevertheless two superb results for the Green at the weekend with Phil Wedge’s charges digging deep to win a marvellous cup tie at Egerton and the Under 16s keeping up the pressure at the top with a 4-1 beating of Ashford Borough Colts.

Spirited Green battle their way into semis

At Rock Hill on a spongy surface both sides deserve praise for a game full of enterprising football and, although the Green nicked the semi final spot, in all honesty Egerton for long spells looked the better side. As it was, praise must go to all the lads for battling for the whole ninety minutes and somehow holding on to progress by virtue of a 3-2 win. Lee Bloxham returned to the club and on his debut snatched two opportunist goals with the other provided by the home keeper who punched an awkward ball into his own net. Five-star performances by Chris Burden and keeper Shawn Dadd, plus another solid outing for Reece Hagger saw the Green through to a tasty semi final with league leaders Appledore.

Turkey stuffs local rivals

Reece Murrell did his chances of breaking into the Saturday Reserves in the New Year no harm at all with a well-taken hat trick at The Ridge as the Under 16s proved too good for local rivals Ashford Borough Colts. Murrell is keen to feature in the senior set up as soon as he is 16 and has already had talks with co-manager Trent Thomas. Also on target in a 4-1 victory was defender John ‘Turkey’ Holt. Saturday night snippets

With the Green completely out of action due to waterlogged pitches, attention turns briefly to our neighbouring sides on County League duty this afternoon. The news is not particularly good from the Kennington camp: the first team had only a Matt Coglan goal to show for their efforts in 5-1 defeat to New Romney down The Avenue while their seconds lacked any real penetration in a 4-0 reversal to the Blues Reserves. Perhaps a minor upset was in the Reserve Division East with the University boys losing 2-1 away to Platt Reserves. Lydd continue to struggle following a 9-1 home hammering by Canterbury City in the Les Leckie Cup. Next Saturday is a big day for both Green sides as the firsts travel to bottom side Sheerness East looking to gain the maximum points that will give some more daylight between themselves and the foot of the table while Alfie’s boys entertain another bottom side, APM Mears Reserves. Incredibly, the Reserve Division One East has at least eight teams still in with a real shout of the title. But for the Green who head the pack there will be no complacency and again three points is the order of the day. Team news later in the week.

6.12.08 Saturday morning update…

Rain ruins prospect of great entertainment

The weather has again badly decimated our fixtures this weekend with the overnight rain proving the final straw for the Swan Ground playing surfaces. Pitches duty man Phil Wedge and Saturday chief Dave Smith left it until Saturday morning but there really was no chance and reluctantly they called off all home matches. At the time of going online, two games survive: the seconds in the cup at Egerton on Sunday (10.30am) and in the afternoon the Under 16s at The Ridge in the league against Ashford Borough Colts (2pm). Updates here as soon as we receive any news. Many of the lads are bitterly disappointed at the postponement of two mouthwatering clashes against Lewisham and Kennington respectively that promised 5-star entertainment. For the Saturday firsts it presented a chance to gain the three points that will make the table look so much healthier while the Sunday firsts were expected to include four new signings in their squad. But let’s hope for a drying few days and have everybody back in action next weekend. We rarely all get together these days as a club, and I know money is tight, but on 27 December your Executive hopes you can all meet for a drink or two…starting at The Phoenix at 1pm. One bad piece of news is that Sunday first midfielder Joe Hopkins, who has yet to feature this season, has broken an ankle whilst playing in a 5-a-side competition. We all wish him a speedy recovery. As I write, news has filtered through that the Saturday Reserves game at Borden has also fallen victim to a waterlogged pitch. For most of you, all I can say is enjoy your weekend off! Dave Homewood

Holiday cup game is off on 27 December so Green go through to next round of the Weald of Kent Charity Cup

Our scheduled opponents for 27 December, Downslands, have pulled out of the Weald of Kent Charity Cup tie. Beaten finalists for the past two seasons, perhaps we can go one further this time round.

With no games over the holiday period, all the Green players, officials, parents, friends and supporters are invited to meet up for a few drinks around the town. Starting at The Phoenix at 1pm. Hope to see you all there.

Plenty of positives in defeat at Hollands & Blair

Dave Smith reports…

Another 3-1 defeat, played on a energy sapping heavy pitch, but a really good performance, which even saw the excellent referee stating that he did not know how we never came away with at least a point.
We had the worst start as we struggled to get a grip of the pitch and after 10 mins we were 2-0 down, I feared we could take a real hammering, but the lads dug in and played some excellent football, with Chris Howells and Ryan Smith taking a grip of the midfield and wingers Mark Howells and Ryan Norman, supplying the chances for our hard working forwards Chris Holmes and Craig Norman. We came close on several occasions before in the 30th minute Chris Holmes scored with a delicate lob. We continued to push on hitting the bar and post, but reached half time 2-1 down.

The second half started in a similar fashion, with us pushing on hard searching for the equaliser, Holmes, Howells and Norman all came close but we could not level the game and in the 85th minute, we conceded a third as we tired purely from the effort we had put in on such a heavy pitch.

Overall it was a good team performance, one of the best of the season and if we had taken our chances we would have won and although our league position looks bleak, we, in my opinion are improving as a team and as a squad. Training attendance is improving and this is adding a good spirit and building a better understanding between the lads.

Next week we are at home to Lewisham, always a lively encounter and we will be going all out for a win and if we can build on Saturday’s performance I am sure we will get something out of the game.

Cup win for Green but Dave Smith praises Kennington’s commitment

A thrilling encounter in Arctic conditions, saw us progress to the next round of the intermediate shield and a clash with New Romney. The 6-4 victory after extra time in my view was well deserved, but I would give Kennington tremendous credit for there commitment and effort.We started well, with a Strong wind behind us and took the lead in the 20th min, when Craig Norman finished well against his old club, but some slack defending from a long free kick saw a Kennington defender head home to level matters. We now upped the tempo and Chris Howells restored our lead with a brilliant 30 yard free kick,2 soon became 3 when Dan Cornell, turned and shot leaving the Kennington keeper with no chance. A 3-1 half time lead looked comfortable, but with the wind now against us we new it would be difficult.Kennington got the best possible start, when a long free kick was mis-judged by keeper Craig Smith, making the score 3-2, then in the 60th min a debatable offside decision, saw former Green forward Steve Harris level the scores. The game was now in the balance and Kennington looked to have won it in the 85min,when Harris again scored with a header, we were rocked, but a superb solo run and cracking strike from Mark Howells in the 89th min saw us level and take the game into extra time.The strong wind had now died, which helped us, we got the ball down and made Kennington work hard, but we were unable to break through in the first period of extra time. We made 2 changes at the start of the second half, with Karl Seni and Liam Smith coming on and this was to prove crucial, as from a superb 30 yard pass from Smith, saw Seni, beat his fullback and deliver a great cross for Chris Holmes to put us back in the lead, the same 2 players combined again and when the keeper could only parry, Dan Cornell scored our sixth, to finish the game.In my view this was a great win and showed the spirit which is building amongst our young squad, our fitness told as training has now picked up with good attendance. Next week we are back in league action, when we visit high-flying Hollands and Blair, but as usual we will go there ready to give our best and play good football and will be looking for a third straight win.

Sunday firsts again forced to make changes

Yet again the Green go into a tough Sunday fixture with no consistency of form or settled team plans with players unavailable for a variety of reasons. Brilliant one week, pitiful the next, this is proving a strange season. Latest player to drop out on Saturday night is Jason Thomas who joins other absentees Kevin Barrett (work), Glenn Mackett (ban), Bryn Williams (Spurs) and Tom Poyner (injured) for tomorrow’s game at The Ridge against leaders Market. With new signing Glen Rolfe transferring from Aldington and Joe Hopkins making his first appearance of the campaign, the Green are expected to go with the following squad and well, if the first part of the season is anything to go by, anything can happen!

Those already at The Ridge might wish to stay and support the Under 16s who bid to make the last four of the League Cup when facing Ashford Borough. A tight and tense game is expected in what is arguably our biggest test of ability and application to date.

Meanwhile at home, Ashley Webster makes his last appearance for the Reserves for a while as he goes on his travels abroad.

Firsts win another cup battle but need extra time

On a bitterly cold Saturday afternoon, the firsts recorded a second successive cup win, following up last week’s Inter Regional victory at Otford with a nailbiting triumph over local side Kennington in the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield. The Division One outfit put up a tremendous show but in the end the Premier lads prevailed. Full report from team manager Dave Smith to follow. Next week the lads return to league action when they are away to Hollands & Blair.

The Green seconds stay top of the Reserve Division East despite having no fixture and next week should be capable of seeing off bottom side Platt at the Swan Ground. Local teams in this division, Kennington and Lydd, both lost. Kennington went down to a solitary Kent University strike at Ulley Road while Lydd also suffered a home reversal at the hands of well-placed Staplehurst (5-0).

Alfie “I am enjoying the challenge”

Sitting at the top of the table, Saturday Reserves boss Alfie Pickard spoke exclusively to The Green Lane following the comfortable 5-3 victory at Larkfield on Saturday:

“We are doing well and there is a growing confidence in the team. We were far more dominant than the score suggests so it is a shame we have no game this week. Trent Thomas is also giving me excellent advice and support and I am enjoying the challenge, I am also confident the lads will keep giving 100% as will myself”.

Here is the match report for Saturday

A comfortable 2-1 win but not as comprehensive as it should have been. On a difficult surface we started well with crisp passing and good movement and took the lead in the 20th min when Ryan Norman finished well after a slick 5 move. We doubled our lead in the 30th min when Craig Norman,created and finished his own chance. We should have now controlled the game, but sloppy defending just before the break allowed Otford to reduce the arrears.The second half saw us control the possesion and were unlucky on several occasions not to increase our lead, Otford to there credit contrinued to work hard,but lacked a real cutting edge to level the scores and we rang out 2-1 winners. Next week we have Kennington in the Intermediate shield at home,which promises to be a interesting affair as they are coming into form now and derby games always carry that extra edge. Never having a settled side is costing the boys dearly and again, although having plenty of the play, the Green lacked any cutting edge. Jason Thomas returned to first team action and gave new options while side-lined club skipper Glenn Mackett was superb as the referee. Goals from Ashley Webster (2), Tommy Lockett (2), Jimmy Pickard and Tom Poyner earned a comfortable 6-2 win against Staplehurst & Monarchs last week and Alfie will be looking for more of the same.

Dave Smith reflects on the defeat at Fleet

Due to work commitments I was unable to make the game on Saturday, which ended in a heavy 8-1 defeat. According to various reports, I have had we were in the game at 2-1 at half time after Dan Cornell scored with a good header, but conceded 6 set piece goals in the second half to leave us well beaten. A disappointing result that leaves us just above the relegation positions.
As usual we now have to move on and we now have a break from the league, with 2 cup games, the first of which is away to Otford, followed by a derby game against Kennington. This will give me a chance to assess where we are are, with our progression and whether I need to look to add more players to the squad, we also now lose our skipper Glenn Mackett for 5 weeks, due to suspension. Certain players have, let their high standards of performance and commitment drop over the last few weeks and this will also be addressed in the next couple of weeks, so when we return to the league action, we will be ready to give 100%, to improving our league position.

Saturday first team manager’s report on the Bearsted game

Another close fought game in very wet and windy conditions saw us lose 3-1 to a well-organised Bearsted side, with some appalling refereeing thrown in. We started with the wind and rain at our backs, but in the first minute the referee awarded a penalty against us when Ryan Smith’s momentum from the conditions carried him into the Bearsted forward, a very harsh verdict,1-0 soon became 2 when slack defending allowed the Bearsted winger to finish well. We now decided to play and were rewarded when Craig Norman touched home Ryan Smith’s free kick. 2-1 down at half time, I told the lads the need to play football on the floor as we were now to be playing against the elemements, the response I got was very good and we dominated the game and were unlucky on several occasions, not aided by some very odd decisions by the referee, with time running out I changed the formation to 4,3,3 but this backfired as Bearsted caught us on the break to make it 3-1. With ten to go the game was over, but as the referee was keen to confirm he was not up to refereeing at this level, he sent Ryan Norman off for a strong challenge borne out of his frustration of being kicked all day. There were probably 8 bookings to go with this in a game without a really bad challenge. All in all a frustrating day, we again played well, but this league is tough, every week we play well organised sides and most at the moment just have the edge and experience we lack at times. We visit table-topping Fleet next week, but we will go there with confidence, as we are capable of giving every team in this league a good game and perhaps we may get some luck going our way for a change, as at the moment it feels everything goes against us.

Green proud of its rep side players

At last nights representative match between Kent and Essex all four Green lads played their part in an entertaining game, which ended 1-1. Ryan Smith and Matt Hadlum played as part of a back three for the whole game and both performed well, with solid defending and good distribution. Glenn Mackett was introduced in the 55th minute with Kent 1-0 down and helped in getting us back on level terms. Craig Smith was less fortunate and only had 20 minutes, but in that time his handling and distribution were excellent and showed that he should be part of a good Kent squad. The next game is against Sussex on 12 November and all four players are in the squad again, which is a great credit to themselves. Dave Smith was speaking exclusively to The Green Lane.

> There is much speculation about the Saturday Reserve team manager’s post  with Steve Wilson in charge for the last time this weekend away to Platts Heath United Reserves. A decision on the side’s future will have to be made at Monday night’s Executive and Managers meetings with the club still hopeful a suitable candidate will step forward and take up the challenge.

> The Sunday firsts have built up a great squad spirit but Dave Homewood is adding at least one, possibly two, new signings as injuries, work and suspensions start to bite in the long winter months.  Talking to The Green Lane he said this morning: “We have been unable to field a settled side and it is clearly going to be one of those seasons. But what is so pleasing is the attitude of the lads…for instance on Sunday at Bliby we had Marty Valle, John Brewster, Bryn Williams and Gary Mickelborough on the bench and their willingness to put the team first was so pleasing. Their turn will come but with suspensions around the corner and injuries always likely to upset things, we still need to add a couple of quality players to the squad. I expect to complete the transfer of a midfielder in the next few days and am also confident of a new striker coming over. Add to this the fact that Kevin Barrett is going to be available for large chunks of the season and Jason Reynolds is still to be with us on a regular basis and the reasons for optimism are obvious.” The lads are looking forward to Sunday’s trip to High Halden to meet an in-form Brewmaster side that always tries to play attacking football and if the 5-5 draw earlier in the season is anything to go by, we are in for another dose of thrilling entertainment.

Dave Smith laments silly errors as we go down to Phoenix

Saturday saw us come away from Phoenix with another reasonable performance but no points, our problem again being our inexperience costing us goals at vital times. We play good football and compete and then throw the game away in a second, with an error or simple mistake. Phoenix came at us hard and fast from the first whistle and took the lead in the 10th min when there left winger was left with to much space and slotted home. We responded well and in the 25th min were level when good harrying work from Ryan Norman, left Dan Cornell to finish well. It stayed like this until half time. Again Phoenix came at us hard, but we were doing well to contain them, until we failed to defend a corner properly and there striker found himself unmarked and fired home, 2-1.We again came back well and the impressive Craig Norman burst into the box to level matters only for the linesman to adjudge he had handled, a decision no one expected and one i found hard to accept, 2-1 then became 3-1 when a mix up between Craig Smith and Chris Howells left a phoenix player to tap home. This was basically the game over, apart form the referee to make two glaring errors, firstly not to send a Phoenix player off for trying to break Ryan Normans jaw and then to send the unlucky Ryan Smith off for a more than debatable last man challenge when himself and the Phoenix forward just got their legs tangled and both players ended up in a heap, on this the Phoenix management have stated they will back us with an appeal. Onto next week now, with Bearsted our visitors, already a must win game now to get us back to the mid table pack, we should be at full strength and hopefully get plenty of support to help us out. A big thanks to all that came Saturday, it is much appreciated by myself and the lads and as a group we are building a good spirit, not just on the pitch but off it as well. Great team spirit earns Green vital win

A terrific battling performance full of determination and pride saw off title hopefuls Bliby at Sandyhurst Lane on Sunday. Top marks to all the squad and the spirit now in the camp suggests we can still have a real crack at honours again this season even though it is one of rebuilding and transition. Bliby, with Hythe Town star Pat Kingwell holding their back line together, played their part in a match that had plenty of good football and must have been good viewing for the neutrals. A hard, low drive from Tom Poyner put the Green ahead early on and only two incredible saves by the home keeper kept out long range pile drivers from inspirational midfielder Ben Henaghan and the ever-dangerous Lee Milton. At the other end Craig Smith had to be alert throughout with Bliby always capable of pulling something out of the bag. As it was, the home side thought they had gained the ascendancy when former Green midfielder Harry Hrehorow lashed in a left-footer early in the second half. Perhaps a famous win was in the offing. However, the likes of Valler, Mackett, Lockett and Rolfe have that level of experience that has clinched numerous titles and cups down the years and they gradually used their nous to set about engineering a Green victory that maybe has shocked a few people locally. A sublime pass from the impressive Robbie Greenfield set up Poyner who rolled in his and the Green’s second and it was all over when a superb break down the right ended with Kevin Barrett sliding in number three. Matt Hadlum again showed his versatility and willingness to put the team first with a superb performance at left back in a clash well controlled by referee Steve Brown. Next week Lee Milton is unavailable as the Green face a tough away game with Brewmaster but Terry Perk and Jason Reynolds will hopefully be back.

Dave Homewood reports on a frustrating County League stalemate

Entertaining but goalless as Green are held by Snodland

After a shaky start, the Green gradually assumed the upper hand for much of this sporting encounter at the Swan Ground on another glorious Saturday afternoon; but were unable to pierce a stubborn visitors defence backed up by their quite brilliant keeper Rigden. Settling quickly to their task, Snodland hit a post early on, and rued not taking advantage of their dominance of the opening exchanges as the home side grew in stature and came out buzzing for the second half. Even without injured skipper Mackett and leading scorer Holmes, the Green still did enough to claim maximum points and substitute Seni again caused havoc down the right with his telling runs and teasing crosses. But despite a late onslaught it wasn’t to be as Cornell, Smith (R) and Milton all came within inches of grabbing a decider. The contest, well controlled by Mr MacLeod, illustrated that scoreless matches can at times be exciting and compelling viewing to the end with both outfits going all out for the winner. Neither team are likely challengers for the title this term as their rebuilding takes place but they should make a lot of friends along the way. Next week manager Dave Smith will hopefully be back to full fitness to take his lads for their really stern test away to a Phoenix Sports team tucked in just behind the leaders. The Green second team took a strong line-up to Maidstone for this tough-looking league encounter and fully deserved a share of the spoils, which keeps us closely on the heels of the pacesetters. A praiseworthy all-round performance with Liam Smith voting himself man of the match! Tom Poyner was outstanding down the left for the Green whose goal was netted by Ashley Webster. Our local friends did not fare too well today with Kennington going down 5-3 to APM Mears in the Les Leckie Cup while the blues reserves lost again, 3-1 at home to Otford Reserves. An equally disappointing afternoon for the Marsh giants in Division One with New Romney losing 8-1 at home to a rampant Kent University side and Lydd narrowly missing out 2-1 at Staplehurst & Monarchs United. More joy however for the Lyddites seconds who overcome Larkfield Reserves 3-1.

Goals by Tom Poyner and Terry Perk looked sufficient to see the Green through to the next round of the Kent Cup but amazingly it was the ten-man Maidstone side that finished the stronger to snatch victory with two minutes remaining. Perk, Matt Hadlum and Ryan Holloway were arguably the pick of a Green side still rebuilding. Full marks to all the lads who gave their best and with a little luck might have emerged victors.

Much more important than the result in this Kent Junior Cup match was the promise shown by so many of our rising stars who will soon hopefully be pushing for first team places. For some reason we managed to clutch defeat from the jaws of victory but many of the youngsters will have gained vital experience. On target for the Ashford boys were Jason Thomas (2), Daryl Hagger and Dan Jackson.

Reserves boss far from happy

A disappointing show against MALGO in the Kent Junior Cup on Saturday that resulted in a 5-1 home defeat has left Steve Wilson and his assistant Alfie Pickard preparing to go back to the drawing board.  Wilson declined to name players publicly but is clearly concerned with the attitude of some reserve team regulars and has revealed he is looking to bring in new signings unless there is a rapid change in commitment. Tommy Lockett netted the Green goal before going off with a dislocated ankle. This Saturday the seconds are at Bearsted Reserves.

Dave Smith reflects on Rusthall defeat
Another tough fought game and again real disappointment of not coming away with a least a point. We started the game playing up hill on a very poor surface, but controlled the early stages and took the lead when Ryan Norman finished well after good work from Dan Cornell, we continued to have the upper hand and were unlucky not to go 2 up when Dan Cornell hit the cross bar. The game changed in the 30th min when the erratic referee awarded Rusthall a soft penalty and 5mins later we were behind, when a long free kick into the box ended up with a Rusthall forward, heading home unchallenged. With the slope now in our favour for the second half, we were confident of getting back in the game. We slowly started to take control, Ryan Smith had a header tipped over and Ryan Norman, Chris Howells and Mark Howells all went close, but for all our endeavour we could not level the game up and it ended in a 2-1 defeat. We had battled well and showed a good attitude and with a bit more luck could have won the game, but this is how things are at the moment, with every game being hard fought and tense to the end, but the big plus is that we are showing on a regular basis that we can compete with all the teams in this league. Poyner snatches late Premier Cup winner

In an entertaining cup tie that saw both sides play some enterprising football, the Green settled things in the closing moments when Tom Poyner ended the deadlock by forcing the ball home after a Matt Wedge shot had been blocked. In truth, the home side should have put the game out of reach in the first half as the Green battled away but created few clear-cut openings. However, a combination of luck, the width of the woodwork and a string of wonderful stops by back to form keeper Craig Smith, led to a 0-0 scoreline at the interval. A more evenly fought second period saw both sides go close but it was the Green, whose unparalleled experience in cup situations is almost worth a goal in itself, who booked a place in the next round. Full marks to the whole squad who refused to be beaten and a special mention to Marty Valle and Matt Wedge who were prepared to put the club first and become cup tied. Also thanks to Ricky Milton who offered to run the line. We have a few injuries, a few that turn up spasmodically and a different line-up each match; but no-one can doubt the commitment of the players and it paid dividends today. Next week we travel to old enemy Buffalo in the Kent Sunday Premier Cup. Man of the match: all the boys were terrific but the great saves of Craig Smith at crucial periods of the game gives him the edge.

With all teams capable of dropping points, epitomised by Kennington’s 4-3 win over Market today, it should be the most open title race for many a year. Bliby are favourites but there is a long way to go yet. For the Green, it is about getting our best side out each week, but it looks like being a season of changes by the week. Steve Mailey, who resigned as Ashford Cavaliers first team manager two weeks ago, made a shock playing comeback this morning but the Premier side suffered perhaps their most humiliating defeat against Ashford Crusaders in the Bodkin Cup.

The afternoon mauling of Thanet Youth Colts was a great way to finish off the weekend and there was further evidence that the future is bright with Jordan O’Gorman, Reece Murrell and Aaron Neil outstanding in a fine squad performance. (See Craig’s report on the Youth Football tab). Next week we welcome our next victims, Dover Town, in what is expected to be Ashley’s last Green appearance.

Dave Smith reflects upon Saturday’s important win at Milton

Three points won in a tough,physical game,is the best way to describe our 4-2 away win at Milton.We again got the perfect start,in the first minute a rasping shot from Mark Howells hit the bar and Ryan Norman headed in.We were playing down the slope with an ever increasing wind,but credit to the side as we tried to keep the ball on the floor and play football.We went 2-0 up when a defencive mix up allowed Chris Holmes to slot home and soon it was three when Chris Howells cross,come shot evaded everyone and nestled in the bottom corner,this gave us a comfortable 3-0 lead to take into the second half. The second half started fairly comfortably for us,but as the wind got stronger,we were gradually pinned back and Milton scored there first goal,with a sharp finish in the 53rd minute,we were now under the cosh and form a wind as sited pass a Milton forward brought them back to 3-2.With 15 Min’s to go looked to be in trouble,but the lads,raised there game and dug in and from a twice taken free kick,cleverly taken by skipper Glen Mackett we regained our 2 goal advantage,with ten to go,tempers frayed and we picked up a couple of bookings as the referee failed to get control a few tasty challenges,but we battled it out and deservedly won 4-2. I give full credit to all the boys today,as we showed we can play good football and also showed we can dig in when we needed to. Next week we have Rusthall away,never a easy place to go,but with them just behind us in the league,we will go confident of coming away with something especially if we continue to play football as we have been,we will have every chance. Reserves cup hoodoo strikes again as we go out in extra time

A mixed day for the Green with our firsts really beginning to cement their Kent County Premier status following a fine 4-2 win away to Milton but the Reserves yet again suffering from cup blues by virtue of an extra time 2-1 loss at New Romney in the Divisional Cup. A great result for Dave Smith and the boys as Ashford’s only Premier Division club pulled seven points clear of their hosts; but Wils & co must be wondering when their luck is going to change in cup competitions as Romney recorded their first win of the season down the Avenue. Full reports to follow from the managers. No games for the seniors on Sunday but the Under 16s have a mouthwatering Molten East Kent Youth League trip to highly-rated Betteshanger.

Other results of local interest this afternoon include still pointless Lydd losing 1-0 away to Guru Nanak to remain bottom of Division One East while Kennington shared a six-goal thriller with a Kent University side having its first outing of the season.

on a disappointing result…not helped by the referee

Here is the match report for Saturday.We are training at Highworth tonight, from 7.30 until 8.45. We came away from Orpington on Saturday feeling disappointed that we had lost 2-1,because to me we should have a least taken a point and it was only our own errors that cost us the game. We got the best possible start,when in the 3rd min Ryan Smith curled in a superb free kick from 25 yards to put us one up.Orpington then started to put the pressure on with there route one football,best suited to a team that had several player’s over 6ft,but our defence held firm and we looked dangerous on the break.In the 35min the referee awarded Orpington a penalty,when one of there forwards made the most of a firm challenge,but Craig Smith made a comfortable save to keep us in front at half time. I talked about how we needed to keep possession better in the second half,but my words fell on deaf ears and from the restart we came under constant pressure and it was no sup rise in the 60Th min when Orpington levelled,when we gave the ball away cheaply and was punished.We now had to show character and when the referee dismissed one of the home side for a lunging tackle,we should have taken control of the game,but the aerial bombardment continued and losing there player made no difference to Orpington,as by constantly missing there midfield out,they kept the pressure on and a from corner in the 72ND min they took the lead,when we switched of and left an Orpinton defender unmarked to fire home.Orpington now changed tactics to time wasting,as we did start to take the game to them,but with the referee not hurrying them,we struggled to get any real momentum going,but in the 90Th min Ryan Norman put there right back under pressure in his area and in a scramble he punched the ball away,the referee who was 10 yards away looked for his assistant for help who was 50 yards away and no penalty was awarded and with this the final whistle went. As i stated earlier i was disappointed not to get something out of this match and told the players how i felt,but this is over now and we look to start again Saturday with out trip to Milton. Kent Cup treble success for the Green

Sunday was a successful day for our sides in cup competitions with the firsts defeating neighbours Ashford Cavaliers 4-1, the Reserves winning 5-2 at West Malling against Lynx and the Under 16s romping in 5-0 on the Isle of Thanet. At the Swan Ground, Dean Rolfe returned to the fray and performed as though he had never ‘retired’ as he formed an impressive defensive partnership with the equally immaculate Ryan Holloway. With Glenn Mackett as always making things happen, the Green had to come back from a poor lapse that allowed Cheeseman to give Cavaliers an early headed lead. Terry Perk struck twice to put us in front and in truth the visitors were disappointing during a second half in which Lee Milton and Tom Poyner sealed a comfortable victory that sees us once again drawn against Buffalo. Full marks to Mark Day who had to play despite injury, while again Robbie Greenfield showed why the club has put so much faith in him for the future. At the time of writing the firsts have a free date on Sunday which might not be a bad thing with so many injuries. Meanwhile, the seconds took a strong line-up into their Kent Junior Cup match and duly coasted in 5-2. Ashley Webster led the way with a hat-trick and there were further scores from James Major and Dan Jackson. Typically, the Reserves don’t have a fixture next Sunday either! Not to be outdone by their seniors, the youth team were emphatic 5-0 winners in their cup clash away to Ramsgate Youth Colts (full report on the Youth Football tab).

Kent Cup tie may be used to experiment

Sunday’s Kent Premier Cup clash provides both the Green and our guests Ashford Cavaliers with  an opportunity to experiment. Following last week’s miserable second half against Market and Cavaliers below-par performance at Bliby, both the home camp and Steve Mailey will no doubt try out some different ideas. For the Green, Matt Hadlum and John Lockett are already absentees while the visitors have lost their captain, Steve Harris, to Market. As the Green rebuild, there have been some positives with Robbie Greenfield beginning to assume authority and hopefully young John Brewster will become more reliable and make a name for himself. Here is the match report for Saturday, also on the web site, can you put no senior training Tuesday, as the light goes too quickly and I am meeting a guy from the Highworth School at 7pm regarding using their facility. A good 3 points, that has moved us into the top half of the table, especially as 4 of our next 5 games are away from home. We started slowly with Sheerness taking the game to us, without really causing us many problems, we then started taking control, going close on a couple of occasions and in the 31st min, from Ryan Norman’s inswinging corner Chris Howells scored with a good header. We held onto this lead comfortably and went in one up at half time. We again started the second half in control, but from a deflection, on the hour, the ball fell kindly to a Sheerness forward, who finished well, for the next few minutes, we were rattled and were lucky not to go 2-1 down, when Sheerness hit the post. We recovered our composure and Dan Cornell burst through the Sheerness defence and finished well, to put us back in the lead and in the 75 min the same player again showing great composure, for such a young player and again finished well, to put us 3-1 ahead and sealed the points for us. Sheerness may have not been the best side we have played this season, but the boys gave a solid performance and showed good character, after last week’s mauling at Cray, there were good performances from Ben Davies at right back and the central midfield pairing of Haden Slade and Chris Howells and the work rate of our forwards Dan Cornell and Chris Holmes always gave us the edge. A good day all around, with a decent crowd to encourage the lads, many thanks to you all for making the effort.

Briefly…Saturday’s fine win over Sheerness was countered with a sound beating at Staplehurst for the Reserves who had Tommy Lockett on target in a 5-2 scoreline. No other details yet available. Sunday’s defeat to Market was largely down to a below-par second half display againt the former Green players. Robert Greenfield again showed his potential while the Green score was provided by Gary Mickelborough from the penalty spot. We were down to the bare bones with veteran Mark Day having to make a comeback but Injuries cannot be used as an excuse and there is clearly still much work to be done. Fifteen goals conceded in three games tells its own story. Manager Phil Wedge played for the full 90 minutes in the defeat at Churchills, which represents a major setback to any promotion hopes. Attention for the firsts this coming Sunday turns to Kent Premier Cup action when Ashford Cavaliers visit the Swan Ground (10.30am). Both camps acknowledge little chance of winning the competition this time round and there could be two  experimental line-ups with the winners facing the prospect of a visit to Maidstone side Buffaloes in the next round.

After last weeks mauling at Cray, this week’s game against Sheerness takes on a greater meaning, as we need to take 3 points to push us into mid table, in what is proving to be a very unpredictable league, with many results not going the expected way. Sheerness have no points from 4 matches, but in my memory they are always a good footballing side who are hard to beat, so we need to forget about last week and get back to things that we have been doing well in our earlier matches.

Here is the match report for Saturday’s nightmare at Cray (by Dave Smith)

A couple of late withdrawal’s and the reserves struggling to get a full side meant we travelled with 13 players and not at full strength.This however was not the reason we took a good beating. The game started in the expected manor with Cray putting us under pressure and we conceded the first goal on 10 Min’s when Matt Hadlum was caught in possesion,in his own area and the Cray forward slotted home.We then managed to start to play and from a good cross from Karl Seni,Ryan Norman finished well at the far post,this rattled Cray and we started to dominate the game. Then the turning point,Ryan Smith did the same as Matt Hadlum,getting caught in possession,but this time he grabbed the Cray forward to stop him,the ref awarded a free kick and after requests from the Cray players for a red card,the ref after consulting his linesman dismissed Ryan,this was a debatable decision,as our back 4 were all within a few yards of Ryan so it was not a cut and dried red card.We survived this but 2 Min’s later in the 33rd min the ref,who was now really showing his bias towards the home side,awarded them a penalty when Cray player to me dived in the area.2.1 soon became 3 as Karl Seni,not learning from other mistakes got caught in possession ,then on the stroke of half time it was 4 when we got caught with the active not active of side rule,with the person deemed by the ref to be in active scoring. Harsh words were spoken in the changing room,the game was gone but i asked for pride and for the boys to come out and give a good second half display.This proved to be to much for some of the lads and although we forced there keeper into 3 good saves and also had a shot cleared of the line,Cray comfortably rattled in 4 more and missed another dubious penalty and Craig Smith performed heroics at times to keep the score down. 3 bookings,2 pens and a sending off for us,the ref went home happy. In the bigger picture of the whole season,this hopefully will teach us all a lesson,Cray were good but not that good,certain players under performed and they know the reasons as it has been spelt out to them.We have taken a lot of praise over the opening weeks of the season,but as i have stated there is 28 league games and non of them are easy,so we know have to start again,forget about the first month of the season and re-group and make sure we are ready for our next set of fixtures. On a disappointing note for me,we only had 1 spectator at the game and my voice against 50 Cray fans.Lets be a club not individual teams and support each other. With Ryan Holloway forced to pull out at the eleventh hour, the Green were down to anyone that could walk on Sunday with the injured Ashley Webster having to turn out. After last week’s 5-5 thriller with Brewmaster, the top rate entertainment continued with the Green having to come back from 4-2 behind to nick the points in the dying minutes. Spurred on by the inspiring John Lockett and a terrific display by Robbie Greenfield, the home team were thankful to Jason Reynolds (4) and Gary Mickelborough for their victory.

Steve Wilson reports from the Swan Ground on today’s fine 3-1 victory over much-fancied Oakwood Reserves

We won today 3-1 against a normally strong Oakwood side, goalscorers were Ashley Webster with a 20 yard rasper, Charlie Clark, and Jim Pickard from the penalty spot. The whole team played well and worked really hard in hot conditions but we thoroughly deserved our win with Charlie Clark my man of the match. Alfie Pickard has agreed to become joint manager with me, which I’m really pleased about because his experience at playing Kent League football at Whitstable will help my team considerably.

Dave Smith relishes challenge away to Cray

Our first away game of the season promises to be a real test, as Cray have made a solid start to the season especially at home. But with a strong squad to choose from we will go there determined to come away with something. Micky Davies returns from holiday and Ryan Smith is off his ban, so these add to the strength of the squad from last week and if we can continue to do the simple things right and show the right commitment and are willing to play and grow as a team, I think the season will be one that we can all enjoy. A note for any supporters wishing to come, we will be leaving the Burger King at the cinema complex at 12.45 sharp. A reminder for all players, that your club membership (£20) is due by the end of September and if you want to spread the cost, see your relevant manager, but we must get this money in as it is an important part of the club running successfully.

Green player of the weekend … the one and only BJ

Macca and Wedgy were tremendous this weekend but the never-say-die spirit of John Lockett earns him the accolade this time round. Centre back Lockett said “…the boys showed great spirit today to come back from 5-2 down and gain a point.”

Referee Wood praises Green spirit

Sunday’s referee, Chris Wood, paid tribute to the fightback by the Green that earnt a point from a thrllling 5-5 draw. Mr Wood said: “What a marvellous game with both sides going for a win. The Green might not have their superstars any more but they can be proud of the spirit shown today.”

Fightback earns a point in entertaining opener

Two unconvincing defences that will need to settle down in the coming months helped to provide 5-star entertainment in the season’s opener at the Swan Ground on Sunday. From the Green’s perspective the positives come from the terrific team spirit that is already developing while the Brews are going to cause plenty of sides problems with their forward surges led by the ever-dangerous Danny Jennings. Captain Glenn Mackett lifted his troops after we had gone behind early on; first with a superb break and finish down the middle, followed by a spot kick after the marauding Ryan Holloway had been scythed down. After the interval the visitors romped into a 5-2 advantage but the Green showed courage to come back and share the spoils with further scores by John Lockett, Kevin Barrett and a visiting defender. Once he had settled in, debutant Matt Hadlum began to shine and Ben Henaghan proved what a valuable member of the squad he is by coming on in the second half and raising the tempo. Next Sunday the Green hope to have Jason Reynolds back for the visit of much-fancied Bethersden while Mackett joins Tom Poyner on the holidaying list.

Bromley Green 0 Phoenix 2 … Manager’s Report

On a windy day, that affected the match, we suffered our first defeat of the season. In my opinion Phoenix were not as good as either Bly Spartans or Stansfeld, but on the day we never really had the cutting edge to score the goals we needed, even though we had a good amount of possession. We started poorly and could have been one down in the first minute, when the Phoenix striker hit the bar. We found it hard going against a strong wind and could not create much going forward. We conceded the first goal in the 25min when we were guilty of over playing at the back and got punished by the Pheonix forward nicking possession and finishing well. We were now desperate to keep the score to one at half time, but in the fourth minute of injury time some sloppy defending from a set piece enabled Phoenix to score again and take a 2-0 half time lead.

The second half started slowly with Phoenix slowing the game down at every opportunity, but we gradually started to build some pressure and in the 65th min we were awarded a penalty for an off the ball incident. Unfortunately Glenn Mackett’s spot kick was well saved, but this spurred us on and we went close on several occasions, with Ryan Norman and Mark Howells being our main threat, but we could not get the goal to bring us back into the match and the game ended in a 2-0 defeat.

Despite the loss I was still pleased with the effort and commitment from the team. Glenn Mackett had a good game in midfield and Ryan Norman and Mark Howells showed some good skills and put in a lot of good work for the side.

Next week we have a tough trip to Cray Valley, but as the season is still taking shape for a lot of sides, with many surprising results, we will go confident of coming back with something from the game.

Marty Valle the pick as Reserves win again

After four pre-season wins the Sunday Reserves opened their league campaign away to the Crusader and secured a vital three points with a 3-1 win. Ashley Webster, Ricky Milton (from the penalty spot), and a stunner from young Dan Jackson accounted for the Green goals. In a game that threatened to boil over, the Green kept their heads and showed a lot of discipline by not getting involved in petty squabbles. A contented Phil Wedge reflected: “Like all good Green squads of the past we played football and took the points, we now look forward to our trip to Egerton next Sunday.” Commenting on Phil’s selection of Marty Valle as man of the match, Patron Dave Homewood said, “It is so rewarding to see the progress Marty has made in his short time at the club. He is a young lad that joined us in the summer with no chips on his shoulder and whilst he clearly needs some basic tuition, the potential is obvious and I know his ambition is to make the first team in time. That’s the kind of attitude Terry and myself are looking for”. Also catching the eye was young centre back Reece Hagger and the hard-working Joseph Mifsud. Manager’s preview for Saturday

Our 3rd home game in a row on Saturday sees us entertaining newly promoted Phoenix sports,who won the strong western section by a clear 15 points last season.They have had a steady start to the season and are placed one spot above us, so another hard game is expected.The squad is starting to take a more regular shape now and hopefully with a more stable side we can build as a team both on and of off the field. I have been really pleased with all the players during the first 2 games, their attitude and commitment has been first class and as long as this remains the case, I know we will continue to progress and improve.

Dave Smith talks about Saturday’s great win

Our first victory of the season was another tense affair, on a blistering hot day, which all players found hard to deal with. The visitors started well using a 5 man midfield that caused us problems and it was no surprise that they took the lead after 20 minutes, when a long cross field ball was not dealt with properly and the Bly forward finished well. We then adjusted our formation to match theirs and came more into the game and in the 33rd min a cross from debutant Ryan Norman was flicked home by Chris Holmes to bring us level.

The second half started with us under pressure, but keeper Craig Smith was again in superb form and kept us in the game, we gradually came more into the match, with Glenn Mackett, debutants Mark Howells and Haden Slade taking control of the midfield. The introduction of substitutes Ryan Strand and Jason Reynolds gave us the fresh legs we needed and an excellent cross from Strand was turned in by Holmes for his second of the game. We now faced the expected onslaught, but to a man everyone dug in and we managed to hold on to secure all 3 points.

This was a good victory and as a team we are working hard for each other and starting to gel together and if we can continue to improve in this manner, we have the chance to compete in this league.

Our thanks go to Ashford Cavaliers for organising the 6-a-side tournament today and thankfully the weather was not too wet.  For our part, it was all about sharpening up, especially with the Sunday League programme opening this coming weekend. In all honesty we were not particularly impressive but there were bright points, not least the performance of debutant John Brewster. Hopefully those that looked a little out of breath today will be at training on Tuesday night! A preview of next Sunday’s fixtures will appear later in the week.

Full marks to the Green who battled back from a goal down to snatch the vital three Kent County Premier League points on offer at the Swan Ground on Saturday. Craig Smith was again brilliant between the sticks while for the second week running Chris Holmes poached two superb goals.  But this was gutsy stuff from all the squad, who wore their new strip for the first time, and Dave Smith is quite rightly proud of his charges. Our second game of the season pitches us against Bly Spartans, please don’t be fooled that after 2 games they are bottom of the league, as I watched them twice last year on their way to winning the Eastern division easily and they are a very useful outfit and we will have to improve on last weeks efforts to get something out of the game. There are a few changes to the squad form last week due to holidays and new players but I am happy with this, as I look to get a more settled squad in the weeks to come. Training again was a non event and I will be speaking to everyone about their commitment to this, as we need to train, as all good sides do, it not only improves fitness but builds a spirit in the side, which helps in games.

Wedge disappointed at Dobbin exit
Jamie Dobbin has today sent Phil Wedge a text message stating he wishes to return to Market after just one season at the Green. Clearly shocked after the player featured in last night’s game against Guildhall and was picked for Sunday’s tournament at Cavaliers, the Sunday Reserves manager told The Green Lane tonight: “What beggars belief is that only last night he told Dave and myself that he was available for Sunday. Is it that with nineteen players on a roll-on, roll-off friendly he thinks he should not spend his fair share of time on the bench? I guess we will never know.” A club insider said “This is unfair on Phil as he has gone out of his way to organise a string of pre-season games for lots of players in the club while other local sides do bugger all. Players are free to go where they want, but it leaves a bad taste when they enjoy the friendlies and then at the last minute jump ship.” Patron Dave Homewood was surprised: “I thought Jamie was doing well and happy here and a good showing this weekend would have put him in with a shout of a first team opportunity. Still, like all the others who think the grass is greener elsewhere, we thank him for his services and wish him well.”

Phil Wedge used this friendly to give a run-out to a number of newcomers to the club and it did no harm at all as the boys continue to get to know each other better. In total 19 lads were rotated and amongst the goals were Jason Reynolds and Daryl Hagger (right), each with well-taken hat-tricks.

The club expect to announce at least three more major signings before the weekend but has dispelled rumours that a third team is in the offing. Patron Dave Homewood said “The idea of a third team again on Sundays is just a rumour, but yes once again more quality players are wanting to join after a good clear out during the summer; maybe next term when our Under 16s come through we will look at another team. But let’s talk about the exciting times at the club now, with competition for places bound to be fierce for all five teams, which is a healthy thing, especially after the holidays and suspensions are put to bed. This Sunday  the Green take two teams to the Goldwyn School for Ashford Cavaliers 6-a-side  tournament (meet Swan Ground 9am).

A hard earned point, with the team showing tremendous spirit and determination, was the most pleasing aspect for me. During the first 45 minutes we had little chance to attack as Stansfeld, dominated, with a sharp passing game, our defence and midfield dug in and defended well, Stanfield’s best chance came in the 35 min, in a one on one situation, with keeper Craig Smith who pulled of a tremendous save. The second half started with a flurry of goals, first in the 47 min, a 25 yard rocket left Craig Smith with no chance, then 2 minutes later a deep cross was headed home to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. At this stage I felt we were dead and buried, but the lads responded superbly, the introduction of new signing Karl Seni on the wing gave us a new attacking outlet and in the 53 min Chris Holmes rounded the keeper to score, 5 minutes later from a Seni cross another debutant 17 year old Dan Cornell headed home to bring us level. The visitors were rocked and in the 65 min, we took the lead, when Cornell and Holmes combined well, with Holmes slotting home. We now faced a barrage of attacks, but with Craig Smith in tremendous form and the whole team giving all they had we looked like we would hang on to register a stunning win, but in the 92 min the ref awarded Stansfeld a penalty after a rash challenge from centre back Ryan Smith, which was slotted home to leave the game a 3-3 draw. After the game, although we had drawn, I felt we had given a great performance and players should be proud of their performance. I had 8 players making their debuts and 8 players in the squad just 18 years old. This was a good start to the season and hopefully a foundation to build on. Patron’s Sunday night review

Great weekend but the injuries are piling up already. The three Green teams in action at the weekend all did well but the injury list is growing and with us already running on a shoestring we can only hope none are too serious. The worst casualty could be Sunday Reserves captain Ashley Webster (left) who, if early

reports are correct, has cracked ribs and seems destined to play little part on the field before he goes abroad in November. Also suffering at the weekend were Micky Davies, Jason Thomas, Daryl Hagger and Gary Mickelborough. Let’s hope they all mend quickly. Before moving on, my personal thanks to all those who toiled over the weekend, and no doubt will continue to do so over the course of the season. Especially Max, Ian, Alvin for work with the bar and food; Paul and Phil with the painful goals [we must get this sorted, it is embarrassing and dangerous]; and of course the managers who can never please all the people all the time! The weather just had to mess things up on Sunday but I hope everybody enjoyed themselves and I thank you all for helping create a really positive atmosphere as we undergo a major on-field rebuilding. There were many candidates [Holmes, Cornell, Senni, Mackett, Lockett, Reynolds are but a few that come to mind] but perhaps the vote goes to keeper Craig Smith whose brilliant stops on Saturday when we were nervously finding our feet really kick-started a successful weekend.

Excellent in a blistering opening twenty minutes of precision, pace and fine finishing, the new-look Green came out on top in this friendly from which both camps claimed to have learned a great deal. Steve Mailey, manager of the visitors who did well to come back and force a number of terrific stops from the in-form Craig Smith, said “This has been useful for me, I have been able to see positives and also that some are perhaps not ready for this level yet”. For the Green, the introduction of new signing Jason Reynolds gave a fresh impetus to the attack and had Dave Homewood looking forward to pairing him with Gary Mickelborough, who missed the game through an injured ankle; “Jason fitted in straight away and I hope he will be with us for many years to come now. The movement up front with Poyner and Jackson was most pleasing considering this was their first run-out together. These three, with Gary when he is fit, give us plenty of options and should worry a lot of defences with their pace and potential to hit the net. Terry and I were pleased with the attitude of the whole squad. After next week’s tournament at the Goldwyn School, we just have to get it right and hit the ground running. Already though injuries, suspensions and holidays in the first month are making planning very difficult.” So the game served its purpose with Cavaliers most impressive performer on the day clearly Billy McColm who was superb throughout whilst Charlie Clark was immaculate at the back for the Green. With the exception of goals from Ashley Webster (3), Joe Mifsud (1), Daryl Hagger (1), and a 25-yard stunner from James Major, Green Reserves squad manager Phil Wedge failed to take many positives from today’s friendly game against Ashford Cavaliers Reserves. The one real bright spot being the display of debutant 16-year-old centre back Kenny Lang. But it was nice to see a return to the fold of Ryan Holloway, while Phil looks forward to this Tuesday when we welcome our old friends from the Folkestone League, Guildhall, to the Swan Ground when he will be using all the younger players and new signings to the club. Saturday night briefly…

All smiles at the Green despite last minute leveller from Stansfeld

A last minute spot kick could not dampen the spirit of a Green squad that even with six lads away played their part in this highly entertaining Kent County Premier clash on Saturday. Two breathtaking stops from keeper Craig Smith, an inspired captain’s performance from Glenn Mackett and goals by Chris Holmes (2) and Dan Cornell brought the home team to within seconds of a memorable win. The terrific attitude from all the boys, who battled back from two goals down, was a credit to the club with Patron Dave Homewood enthusing: “Everyone, and I include the unsung backroom staff here, can be proud of today. Make no mistake it marks the beginning of a new era and the atmosphere is so positive.  One swallow doesn’t make a summer but Dave and the lads are off to a very encouraging start.” The only sour notes were first day injuries to stalwart Micky Davies and young Jason Thomas. Next Saturday the firsts are again at home with Bly Spartans the visitors (2.45pm) for what promises to be another closely fought affair. Bly lost 2-0 at home to Lewisham this afternoon.

New manager, new faces for the big kick off

This Saturday sees Dave Smith take charge of his first meaningful match for the Saturday first team who play host to Stansfeld & OB Club. Pre-season has been low key but excellent performances against Kent Leaguers Dover Athletic and Folkestone Invicta give cause for quiet optimism. Dave spoke exclusively to The Green Lane tonight:

“On the eve of my first official game in charge of Bromley Green, I feel a real excitement for the coming season. I have added several new faces and am still pursuing others. A lot of the new faces will be younger players, but all have ability and technique and my aim is to mould these lads along with the existing experience from last season, into a team that can compete in this league and build a platform and structure for not only this season but for the years ahead. This to me is the only way forward for the club and with us all working towards this goal, I feel we can have a good season.”

Sunday sides prepare for a new season

This Sunday there are two home games against our friends from nearby Ashford Cavaliers, both kicking off at 10.30am. The firsts and seconds will continue to look at new faces as an enforced rebuilding programme takes shape. The senior side,  without the holidaymaking Lee Milton and skipper Glenn Mackett, will unveil a new striker who comes highly recommended by old boy Gary Skillett but it is quite refreshing that we are now not expected to win every game and the pressure is for once on our opponents. Danny Valler, Tom Poyner and Charlie Clark are expected to be added to last week’s squad. Dave Homewood told The Green Lane tonight: “We are going to need patience as the emphasis will be on youth but there is at least one new goalscorer joining this week (maybe two, I am in talks with another) and if he can forge a partnership with Gary Mickelborough then things could start to buzz again.  Ryan Holloway is eager to return to the action while Bryn Williams, Robert Greenfield and Richie Richardson are likely to keep their places after last weeks debuts. When everybody is fit and available, there should be plenty of competition for places; but our main concern is not to bring too many kids in too soon, it is all about timing and acting in everybody’s best interests. Terry and myself will have a squad of 16 or 17 and Phil likewise for the seconds and it cannot be over stressed that we view all players as available for Sunday Premier or Division Two football.  Anyone really doing it in the reserves will get their chance and then it’s up to them. Realistically it is going to take at least a month to try and get all the lads settled and comfortable in their teams and positions”. After a fine run last year, Steve Mailey’s team, with Pat Law returning, will be looking to have a crack at the title in what should be an open fight with Bethersden and Bliby also expected to challenge Market. Cavaliers seconds come to the Swan Ground in good pre-season nick managed by another former Green man Dale Stringer. Green manager Phil Wedge (below) has only Robbie Bower (work) missing and is likely to have a squad of about 18 players to run the rule over. Phil is keen to have a look at some newcomers that Alvin Gigg is introducing to the club plus young new signing John Brewster who has showed up well in training.  Ian and Alvin will be providing a bar-b-que after the games. Let’s hope for some decent weather!

New season beckons …

The Green’s Kent County League campaign gets under way on Saturday when we are at home to Stansfeld O&B Club. The visitors drew their opener last Saturday away to Phoenix Sports 2-2. Kick off at the Swan Ground is 2.45pm.

Two new lads joined the Club on Sunday and featured in the 5-0 friendly defeat away to a very useful and well drilled SIMLA side. Robbie Richardson and Bryn Williams will prove to be good acquisitions but we still need a big target man to hold the ball and provide for willing runners. Despite the scoreline, there were lots of positives and more ideas can be tried out this coming Sunday against Ashford Cavaliers (10.30am).

Sunday firsts look forward to first warm-up game

The Sunday firsts travel to East Peckham this weekend for their first pre-season friendly against SIMLA with a new-look squad and there is excitement in the camp as a fresh era beckons following the shock resignation of long-serving manager Dave Andrews last week.  With a number of players deciding to leave, the side has the chance to rebuild and there is an opportunity for several newcomers to make their mark alongside established stars such as Glenn Mackett, John Lockett, Danny Valler, Terry Perk, Gary Mickelborough and Lee Milton. Speaking exclusively to The Green Lane Dave Homewood said “Terry and myself will be looking for Charlie Clark and Tom Poyner to really push themselves this season and help the experienced lads to bring through a number of promising youngsters. Reserves manager Phil Wedge is also assisting us during this transitional period and is encouraging his best young players to have a go at making a first team slot their own.  We are, I believe, a couple of quality players away from having a well balanced group that just might surprise a few people. We will take a squad of about 16 to East Peckham, seven of whom will be making their first appearance. These are exciting times and there is much interest in the match both inside and outside the club”.

Steve Wilson on the pre-season friendly with Woodchurch

We won 3-1 (tom poyner, joe mifsud, charlie clark) This really was our first proper friendly ,be able to field my main bulk of players i will be using throughout the season.we started brightly first 15 mins popping the ball about and of course when we got wide we were creating chances with jason thomas putting in some delightful crosses, we took the lead through tom poyner.then we stopped playing we were second to the ball and kept trying to go thru the middle which didnt work.At half time made some changes and thru on some of our younger players who as in previous games got us back on track ,playing with pace and enthusiam ,and it wasnt long before we were 2 up thru joe mifsud neat finish,joe being made captain was superb thru out the game and is relishing his new role.woodchurch pulled 1 back then charlie clark rapped up the game with a route 1 goal.Both me and jim were pleased with the performance and especially the workrate of the younger players .cheers SW

“Typical Green” says Wilson as 3-0 lead frittered away

Steve Wilson was less than pleased with the performance in a friendly outing at home to Kennington on Saturday that saw the Green snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Three goals up at the break, it certainly was a game of two halves with the visitors not believing their luck as they waltzed through at will in the second period to deservedly win 5-3. Not good enough, and Wilson quite rightly expects players to start taking responsibility instead of pointing fingers at others.

As many of you are aware I am away until Tue 19 Aug, I return at 5.00 and will be at training that evening, as our first league game against Stansfield is on Sat 23rd. Steve Wilson has helped me out by agreeing to take training in my absence and I thank him for that, let’s hope more of you attend so that when the league gets underway we are as fit as possible. I am confident of adding some more players to the squad before the start of the season, maybe not with the experience we could possibly do with, but players with youthful enthusiasm, who could get our season off to a good start and build in the right way for the future of the club. Wedge ready for Hastings battle

This Sunday Hastings League champions Kurdish United visit the Swan Ground in another pre-season warm-up for the reserves. Manager Phil Wedge, unhappy at the low number of his players at training, is looking forward to the game: “This is the sort of match they will all want to play in but tonight’s turn-out for training is not acceptable and I will be having words”. Also at home on Sunday are the Under 16s who have a few away on holiday but it should be an entertaining game with local side Kennington. Both matches kick off at 10.30am.

Is there a proven goalscorer out there?

The Green senior teams are looking better by the hour but we still need at least one forward that can guarantee twenty or thirty goals a season. With Marcus Hodges now not playing either Saturday or Sunday, we have lost the extra edge that a proven goalscorer can provide in tight games. Reviewing the weekend

Firstly, my thanks and congratulations to our team managers, who put in a great deal of work to field sides that were a credit to the club in all four games at the Swan Ground this weekend. Also, I acknowledge the hours put in by Alvin Gigg and Paul Chekov who attended all weekend to make sure people were served and those endless little jobs were taken care of. It is to be hoped that support for Dave Smith and Steve Wilson prior to and after games soon improves as they are working well together but cannot be expected to do everything themselves on the day. Results in warm-up games are not too important and I will let the managers submit their reports; but the influx of fresh faces in the senior sides plus the number of youngsters showing interest and huge potential, augurs well for the future. Craig Smith and Tony Williams have the job of bringing the really young lads through and it is refreshing that there is already dialogue with the senior managers to ensure their progress is timed correctly. Craig’s first match in charge of the Under 16s on Sunday saw him refereeing against Betteshanger! Despite dozens of phone calls, not one referee was willing to officiate the boys’ match, which I find sad. We are missing John Roffey already! Training is on Tuesday but there are no midweek fixtures this coming week. On Saturday Steve Wilson takes charge against Kennington (3pm) while on Sunday the Under 16s welcome Kennington again with the seconds entertaining Hastings outfit Kurdish United. Both games kick off at 10.30am. DH.

Saturday Reserves boss Steve Wilson is placing his faith in youth and is prepared to be patient as the club enters a transitional period. Steve will be in charge of Saturday’s home pre-season game with local friends Kennington (3pm) and is expected to field a mixture of potential first and second teamers as new faces begin to settle in at the club.

Another good work out is the way I would describe the game against a fairly useful Dover Res side. We conceded the only goal of the game in the 40th min, when a dipping shot beat keeper Craig Smith. Prior to that the game had been fairly even, with Chris Holmes unlucky not to score after rounding the keeper and Ryan Smith having a long range shot well saved. The second half was difficult for all the players in the very humid conditions, but I was pleased the lads stuck at it and only a last ditch tackle on Chris Holmes stopped us equalising. But overall, Dover did deserve there win. Reflecting on both our games this week, I felt that the Dover game came a little early after the Folkestone match as I thought the players at times lacked a bit on Saturday. But all credit to all the players used in both matches, as I feel we have made good progress in the build up to the start of the season and to be involved in two tight 1-0 matches against Kent League opposition is a credit to us all. New signing, centre back Matthew Hadlum, thundered in a great 68th minute winner as the Green opened their pre-season friendlies with an impressive victory over Kent Leaguers Folkestone Invicta at the Swan Ground on Wednesday evening

Our 1st friendly on Wednesday against Folkestone Res proved to be a good start to the build up for the season and the 1-0 victory was well deserved. Several new faces played their first game for the club and overall the performance level of all 15 players used was very good. The blend of youth and experience that we had worked well and I thank the experienced players for the commitment and encouragement they passed over to the younger lads. We played some good football and the boys kept the ball and used the pitch well, which at times gave Folkestone lots of problems

With our pre-season training still really to take off, our fitness levels were very good, especially as we were playing against a side who train twice a week and who have already played 4 friendlies. We now move on to Saturday with a double header. The reserves will take on the Man of Kent and the 1st play Dover Res. There will be changes from the 1st team squad as the holiday season is starting to kick in, but these games are all about preparing for the season ahead and building to get it right when the league starts.

Manager Dave Smith gets his squad together for the first time on Wednesday 23 July when Folkestone Invicta visit the Swan Ground for a pre-season work out. Kick off is at 6.45pm. On the Saturday, another Kent League side, Dover Reserves, are our guests with a 3pm kick off. Steve Wilson gets his Saturday seconds up and running for the first time on the same afternoon with a 2pm start against local side Man of Kent.

Under 16s to meet the league champions

The league champions Betteshanger have accepted an invitation to visit the Swan Ground on Sunday 27 July for a pre-season friendly with the Green’s Under 16s. Kick off is at 2pm. Patron Dave Homewood told The Green Lane “What a fantastic way to start preparing for next season when we will be in the higher Division Two section. Betteshanger finished top of the tree last time and if we are going to emerge over a period of time as the best, then this is exactly the kind of test we need on the learning curve. Craig and Tony will have the boys buzzing by then and whatever the result it should be a really entertaining affair. I am also hoping more members and parents/relatives will come and support the boys this year as we move up a notch into the second division. They will have a new sponsored kit the same as the top Saturday side with their names on the back [vain lot!], new tracksuits and an opportunity to really make a name for themselves as they approach senior football.”

Two Bromley Green greats were in attendance on Friday night as another season of mixed fortunes was celebrated. The first ever winner of the Bill Mickelborough Memorial Shield for Clubman of the Year in 1973, Bob Mummery, made a rare appearance to award the coveted trophy to Terry Perk. Goalkeeping legend John Kelly re-presented the impressive Tommy Stafford Memorial Cup for the Youth Clubman to Martyn Dalby. Vice Chairman Peter Interieri welcomed Brenda Mummery and Shirley Kelly and said they were wonderful examples of the strength of the ‘Bromley Green family’.  Speaking to The Green Lane later, Patron Dave Homewood stated “We should treasure these moments; Bob and John stand for everything that Bromley Green believes in…hard work, loyalty, honesty and looking after each other when the chips are down. Brenda and Shirley have hardly changed and I hope we see them much more often. We have lost Tommy Stafford and tonight we have been informed of the death of another Green stalwart, Vic Stanley. Our condolences go to his wife Ruth and children Mark, David, Matthew and Sarah. A round of applause in memory of Tommy, Vic and young player Barry Cunningham while at the same time celebrating a first baby for Lee and Fiona was I think an  appropriate gesture of respect. Of course we congratulate Lee and Fiona on the birth of Sophie and share in their joy.” Lee Milton was awarded the Chairmans Award for Endeavour and the loyal clubman also lifted the Sunday firsts managers player of the year as well as receiving recognition for 400 senior appearances. But it is the younger fraternity that continues to give hope for the future with Darryl Hagger being voted the Most Improved Player and Krzysztof Pierzchala the Most Improved Youth Player. Referring to the club’s backers, The Patron continued “It was fantastic of Sue (5S Drainage) to share the evening with us and she has already committed to further sponsorship next season.  Along with Keith Cornell, Gary Skillett and our vice presidents we are so lucky to have such enthusiastic and genuine backing.” The first winner of the Ernie Wedge Memorial Trophy for Supporter of the Year went to the indefatigable Alan Webster. Patron: Looking forward to next season

Just days before Friday’s annual awards ceremony, the club’s Patron has issued an upbeat message to members to prepare for next season and prove the doubters wrong. Speaking exclusively to The Green Lane, Dave Homewood agreed last season had its fair share of setbacks but he felt that on and off the field the Green are well positioned to bounce back. “We have just come through an awkward few months but I am proud of all the players, managers and supporters for their efforts on behalf of our club. After Friday’s presentations, I am not interested in dwelling on the past as I am aware of the hard work already being put in by our managers and Development Officer Terry Perk to make sure we are on track next term. That said, let’s not forget that we won the Bodkin Cup, the Ashford Charity Trophy and were cruelly beaten in the Weald of Kent Cup final – not bad for a club at a low ebb! But no, last season by our standards was largely unacceptable.” Player news is expected soon from Dave Smith and Steve Wilson who have the task of bringing success to the Saturday seniors while the Sunday firsts are determined to regain their crown under Dave Andrews and Dave Homewood. With a back-up team of Jamie Allan, Terry Perk, Lee Gilham and Mark Day, The Patron is quietly confident: “Dave [Andrews] and myself are not interested in second-best and it is no secret we are on the look-out for fresh, quality players to boost the squad. We have a few irons in the fire and hope to make announcements shortly.” Meanwhile, Phil Wedge has been elected to continue running the Sunday seconds with a mandate to nurture and provide top-notch players for the first team. There is still time for any prospective new player to join the club – just turn up for training and a chat on Tuesday 1 July at the Swan Ground without obligation. Referring to rumours concerning some of the Green’s top players, Homewood clarified: “I have shook hands with Pat Kingwell and David Cook and of course there will be some Sundays when they will be unavailable and I respect that at this stage of their careers their Saturday football takes priority. However, they have been stalwarts at this club and I don’t see either of them doing household chores on a Sunday morning! Marcus Hodges will not be returning, at least not for a while, as he has moved to Faversham and Sarah is expecting another baby in November. We have had an amicable chat and of course the door is always open to the most prolific striker Ashford has seen for many years.” Perhaps the most exciting prospects are the lads coming through the ranks in the Under 16s who improved dramatically under the expert tuition of Steve Mailey during the second half of last season. New FA laws prevent us giving the boys experience in the senior friendlies but their time will soon come and with new signings Kieran Hawkins and Liam Wratten added to the squad and a couple of others in the pipeline, optimism is running high. The boys, who will have their final outing of the season on Sunday in the Festival of Sport at Stanhope, will have a new strip for next season and any potential sponsors are invited to contact Dave Homewood at the address below. Off the pitch, Ciaran McQuillan is to remain as Fixture Secretary and Keith Cornell is continuing with his fantastic sponsorship support that is expected to include new tracksuits for the Saturday firsts. Boosted by the re-election en bloc of the Executive Committee at last week’s AGM, The Patron concluded: “We have five teams raring to go and I expect them all to be up there challenging for honours. Patron’s Invitation Dinner a huge success

The club said goodbye to referee Mr John Roffey on Friday evening  with a small presentation to remember us by. John has moved to Tuckton, near Bournemouth to be with his partner Sue and insists he has made a clean break from football. Vice President Carlton Wynter, semi-sober,  made the presentation on behalf of the club.

Former goalkeeping stalwart John Kelly handed over the new Tommy Stafford Memorial Cup to Martyn Dalby who won the Youth Clubman of the Year accolade for the second year running (picture on Youth Football tab).

Vice President Kelly said “What a fantastic night and I am sure Martyn is going to be a credit to the Green for many years to come. To be amongst such celebrated company and to honour Tommy in this way is so special to me”.

…former Green star Gary Williams says hello from Helsinki

Former Bromley Green man Gary Williams has made contact from Finland where he currently coaches the women’s youth team for Helsinki Jalkopallo Klubi. After ten years of playing and coaching in the USA, Gary and his wife Nora returned to Europe and recently had an addition to the family, a son, Henri.Gary is also contemplating a return to his roots as he misses his family here but he wonders what has happened to the legendary BG youth programme: “In my day The Green was THE youth club to play for. I have so many fond memories”.He rates his highest point at The Green the winning of the Northern European Championship with the youth side in Germany“… that was something!”

Talking exclusively to The Green Lane,Patron Dave Homewood paid tribute to Williams, describing him as “…an example to all young players in dedication and application. The club is obviously proud of what he has gone on to achieve; it makes it all worthwhile really. Good to hear from you Gary and maybe in the not too distant future we will meet up again. It still applies mate: Once a Green boy, always a Green boy!

True ‘Legends’ will be at Invitation Dinner

If you are decidedly irked by the improper and over use these days of the word ‘legend’, take solace from the fact that Friday’s Invitation Dinner will have a number of people that have made a significant contribution to local football and can accurately be described as such. Whilst only a small intimate evening is planned to mark the first presentation of the Tommy Stafford Memorial Cup to the Youth Clubman of the Year, local household names such as John Kelly, Carlton Wynter and referee John Roffey will be in attendance. These are true legends of the game: John, an extrovert yet brilliant keeper of yesteryear; Carlton, well he is simply unique; Mr Roffey, has retired from refereeing and moved away from the area but will travel back for the evening.

Speaking tonight to The Green Lane, The Patron described John Roffey as “An unselfish man who has been a credit to the game for so many years,” adding “… the least we can do is have one last chat, thank him and wish him well for the future. John officiated at a high level but loved his local refereeing and was humble enough to finish off the weekend with a youngsters game free of charge. Football in the area will not be same without him. The get-together is really about one dear departed former club captain and a man who both gives and earns respect from all genuine football lovers. Tommy Stafford and John Roffey – now we are talking about two real ‘legends’.”

Tonight’s KCL AGM saw the Green retain their Premier Division status and Chairman Stan Donald is absolutely thrilled. The scene is now set for new team boss Dave Smith to usher in a new era at the club.

Double delight came with the announcement tonight from the Swan Ground that stalwart Steve Wilson has agreed to take up the challenge of managing the Saturday Reserves. Patron Dave Homewood said “This is fantastic news and the prospect of Steve and Dave Smith working together to make Saturdays a success is an exciting prospect. We need to find Steve match day support but this is a huge move forward and I know he already has a few new names in mind for next term”.

Another great boost came for all the senior managers with goalkeeper Joe McQuillan committing his future to the Green and pledging to fight for a place in both first teams.  Patron Dave Homewood commented that “Joe has gone through a bad patch but he is part of the Bromley Green family. Along with Craig [Smith], Shaun [Dadd] and promising youngster Liam Wratten, we already have four keepers here for the long term and we are determined to keep them happy. There may of course be more to come but considering it is only June our managers are working hard behind the scenes to make sure everything is in place for the big kick off”.

We may have come out of a generally mediocre season but the the Green continue to be an attractive proposition to sponsors including a fabulous new strip for the Sunday Reserves and of course the continued support of Keith Cornell…watch this space for full details of the Green’s sponsors for the coming season

Gilham joins Sunday backroom team

Key defender Lee Gilham, who has missed the past season through injury, has joined the backroom management staff of the Sunday first team who are already preparing to regain their Sunday Premier crown. Patron Dave Homewood, tonight speaking exclusively to The Green Lane, said “The club will not be rushing Lee back into playing and the reality is that he will probably miss all of the coming season. He is still young and will I am sure be back; but for now we are happy that he is commiting himself to joining the Sunday senior management set-up. I have spoken with him tonight and he will shortly sit down with the Executive and we can discuss a role he feels comfortable with.” On the disappointment of last season, despite lifting the Bodkin Cup and Charity Cup, the Patron said it can be summed up in one word: ‘unacceptable’. But he added “…that is history and apportioning blame is a futile exercise and we are moving on rapidly now. With Mark Day also carrying on with his support role we have assembled a management team with several thousand appearances to their names!” With the majority of last season’s players staying, the priority now is to secure a couple of class signings that will give the club the edge again. Green future is bright

A less than distinguished season is now behind us and things are already starting to buzz again with players and managers eagerly planning for the new campaign. Dave Smith is relishing the challenge of getting the Saturday firsts back on track again while the Sunday seniors are, in the words of skipper Glenn Mackett, ‘absolutely delighted’ that a formidable management team of Dave Andrews, Terry Perk, Dave Homewood and Jamie Allan will be charged with driving the side back to former glories come September. The one gap to fill is the Saturday Reserves manager post with Steve Wilson understandably wanting to extend his playing career at the Green and he feels he cannot play and manage. Stan Donald receives county award

Congratulations to the club chairman and vice-president Stan Donald who received a long service award at the Kent County League’s annual dinner. It is well-deserved recognition for Stan who, as a former player, has assumed roles as secretary, treasurer and of course chairman.

Milton again top of the appearances

Loyal clubman Lee Milton once again clocked up more senior appearances (57) than any other player during the past season. Patron Dave Homewood commented: “Since he was a very young lad Lee has without question accepted the way the club runs and has been rewarded with a host of honours. The past season was not one to remember but Lee still played his part in two fine cup wins for the Sunday firsts. His willingness to play in any position in any of our sides sets an example to all those who want to choose when and where they play.”

Steve Mailey wishes to emphasise that all youth squad players are expected to train on Tuesdays even though the league season is completed. As usual, this Tuesday training is between 5.30 and 7pm.

Cook returns to Invicta

Long-serving Green midfielder David Cook has moved up the coast from Hythe Town to try his hand at Ryman League football with Folkestone Invicta. David had a pre-season at the Buzzlines last year before being a major force in Hythe’s chase for honours. With Invicta rebuilding after relegation, the Green wish him every success at this higher level.

“Bromley Green Football Club is pleased to announce that Mr David Smith has tonight been offered, and accepted, the post of Saturday First Team Manager for the coming season. Mr Smith will work closely with other team managers in implementing the Club policy and returning the Saturday senior side to its former status. There were other strong candidates but at this juncture the Club is of the opinion that Mr Smith, with his coaching badges and vast experience, has the pedigree to bring the side stability and success. Mr Smith will assume his duties with immediate effect and we wish him a long and happy association with the Green”.

The Green’s restructure began in earnest with the appointment of former Lydd stalwart Dave Smith as the new Saturday first team boss. Former central defender Dave, who also had notable success at the now demised Houchin FC, was the unanimous choice of senior players within the Club and the Executive Committee.

Applications invited for managerial posts

Applications are invited for the posts of Saturday Reserves team manager and Sunday First team manager as the Club continues to look for a fresh start, with new ideas and players willing to commit themselves to the cause. Enquiries should go through the Patron, Dave Homewood, who told The Green Linetonight “Current players who want to commit themselves to the Club, and I emphasise ‘Club’, are cordially invited to stay but there is no denying we need fresh blood as we have become stale both on and off the pitch. These are two fantastic opportunities for up and coming managers who want to make a name for themselves. The Saturday boys came so close to the title before running out of steam and suffering from weddings and injuries in the last few weeks of the season while the Sunday senior squad is still awesome when all the lads are there. We have senior players in the Club to provide support to new managers but we are seeking those with the bottle to take responsibility and have the drive to get us buzzing again. Mixed ending to a mixed season

Winning the Bodkin Cup and Ashford Charity Trophy would by most people’s standards represent a successful season. However, the relinquishing of the title after so many years at the top is a bitter pill to swallow and Sunday’s labouring performance in a 5-1 home defeat by our good friends Ashford Cavaliers showed just how much work needs to be done to regain our crown. We have lost our edge in recent weeks and the visitors fully deserved the maximum points with a Craig Southen goal our only consolation.

Last Day of an indifferent campaign … Green teams finish at home then it’s full steam ahead for next season

Two home games this Sunday (against Ashford Cavaliers and The Albion respectively) complete a season that has had more downs than ups. It certainly hasn’t been boring though and if I’m honest much of it hasn’t been enjoyable either. That has to change, and it will. The Executive will be making announcements after Monday’s meeting and will be asking existing and new members to get us back on track again both on and off the field. Our visitors, managed by Steve Mailey, are staying for a pint on Sunday, so although the result is of little consequence to either team let’s try and end the season with a smile on our faces.

Bethersden complete historic double

Thursday nights 5-3 defeat at Bethersden sums up the Green’s unacceptable league campaign while for the Den it represents a fantastic double. I honestly cannot remember the last time any side recorded two league victories over us in the Premier. Scorers were Danny Valler, Craig Southen and Glenn Mackett. Phil Wedge, standing in as manager, reports that Tommy Lockett was sent off for violent conduct. Congratulations to Bethersden and of course Market who won the league; but once Sunday’s now meaningless home game with Ashford Cavaliers is out of the way it will be time for some serious thinking. Kick off on Sunday is at 10.30 while on the far pitch the reserves round their season off with a home game against The Albion.  Hopefully the U15s, themselves ending the season on a high, are organising a barbeque to finish what has been a long season of mixed fortunes.

Ashford Dynamo call Tuesday night game off

Ashford Dynamo, the whipping boys of the Premier Division, have called Tuesday evening’s game off as they can’t raise a side. Thursday’s game at Bethersden is still on.

The Green quite frankly were tetchy in the Sunday morning sunshine and, with little to play for, the glut of end-of-season fixtures do not hold their normal significance or cutting edge. Not a game to remember. The side is in action again on Tuesday at home to Ashford Dynamo and on Thursday away to Bethersden, both with 6.30 kick offs. Sunday’s home match with Ashford Cavaliers ends a season of mixed fortunes.

Green win second major trophy in a fortnight

It has hardly been a vintage season by Green standards but we have still emerged with two out of three of the major domestic cups and congratulations go to Dave Andrews, Jamie Allan and all the squad for another professional performance that saw off a brave Cavaliers outfit. Cavaliers, until recently in with a shout of the league, played their part in a sporting and entertaining Ashford Charity Trophy final at a sun-drenched Homelands on Thursday night. Gary Mickelborough with a double and Pat Kingwell gave the Green a 3-1 interval advantage after Cavaliers had taken the lead with an early spot kick. In the second half apart from the odd flurry at the other end, noticeably with Sean Dadd saving well from Jake Symonds, it was a story of missed Green opportunities as Lee Milton produced a string of superb crosses from the left. As it was, a typical moment of class from Marcus Hodges, who clipped the ball home with his left foot, proved to be the only score of the second period. A fine all round display from the Green with John Lockett, Danny Valler and skipper Glenn Mackett as always giving everything for the team. Mickelborough, whose goals have once again been decisive, earned the man of the match accolade.  Two prestigious awards in less than a fortnight after such a traumatic season [that included the loss of Lee Gilham through injury] is a terrific endorsement of the teams resolve…well done lads!

Mickelborough decider as title race hots up

As the business part of the season speeds towards its climax, the Green’s second string made sure the race for the Eastern Reserves Division title is going right to the wire after yet another absorbing evening clash with the Blues. In the early moments, the visitors in fact found themselves ahead when a bad bounce deceived the hapless Dan Noden and the ball rolled into a gaping goal. It appeared that the Green were in for one of those nights when first Stuart Prior with a header and then Steve Wilson with a long range thunderbolt rattled the goal frame during a bout of considerable pressure. Appeals for a penalty following a blatant foul on Anthony Davies were waved away and Glenn Mackett was booked for nothing in particular. One has to ask why no action was taken when Mackett himself was scythed down later in the game…a contingent of referees do seem to have one rule for some and one for ‘names’ and quite frankly it is becoming irksome.  Some referees argue that “Mackett lives by the sword”. Yes, he does, but when he is fouled, it is still a bloody free kick!  Let’s have the same rules for dishing out yellow cards applied to everyone refs, please. After half time, it was all Green with Tom Poyner, Gary Mickelborough and Jimmy Pickard going close. A dubious penalty (to even things up after the first half cock-up perhaps?) brought the Green level, with Prior hammering home off the underside of the crossbar. It was now the Green who looked the likely winners and Mickelborough, who should have netted a treble, duly obliged with a terrific solo run and finish. An entertaining encounter and with the Green still having to play Romney and the University, the destiny of the championship is still very much undecided. All the squad deserve praise for coming through a difficult test but Wilson once again takes the man of the match accolade.  Team manager Gary Gibbs said “This was an important win that keeps us right in there. Also I was so pleased to see many of the Under 15s down supporting the side”. On Saturday the boys are away to Oakwood Reserves while on Tuesday our old sparring partners, Lydd Town Reserves, come to the Swan Ground for another crucial league match.
