Saturday night update

Local cup game for Sunday Reserves is also OFF

Saturday morning update

First team game at Bly Spartans is OFF

The vital first team Kent County League Premier fixture away to Bly Spartans was called off this morning. As there has been no news to the contrary, it is assumed the Sunday Reserves cup game at The Ridge and the U16s game in Dover tomorrow afternoon are still on.

No games this weekend at Swan Lake!

Friday’s pitch inspection left Phil Wedge with no alternative than to rule that there will be no football at home this weekend: ‘There is no chance of playing on either of the pitches…in fact it is more like Swan Lake than the Swan Ground!’

Blowers returns

Jack Blowers has returned to the club following a brief stint with Ashford Town and will now be considered for all future U16 fixtures. Full squad for this week’s trip to Dover is on the Youth Football tab.

All correspondence to Patro

Please note: all correspondence for the time being is to go through the Patron. Kent County League and KCFA fines, correspondence etc will be dealt with by Dave. Please email or text. Thanks.

Condolences

Bromley Green Football Club tonight (19 January 2009) issued a brief statement:

It is with deep sadness that we learn of the passing of our chairman’s wife Irene this afternoon.  The club sends its thoughts and condolences to Stan and family. Team managers are asked to ensure a period of silence is observed before all Green games this weekend.

Weekend Roundup

Dave Smith reports on Saturday’s cup success

Our first game of 2009 proved to be an excellent 7-0 victory over neighbours New Romney to see us progress to the quarter final of the Kent Intermediate Shield. This was our best win of the season and our first clean sheet. We got the perfect start with Chris Holmes heading in from a Ryan Norman cross in the 3rd minute. We then dominated the game and went 2 up, with the same combination and Holmes second header. Romney rarely threatened our goal, with our defence in commanding form. We reached half time with a 2-0 lead. The second half started slowly with Romney trying to get back in the game, but the tie was over when again Norman and Holmes combining, with Holmes heading in for his hat trick. We then had the luxury of bringing on strikers Craig Norman and Dan Cornell, to replace Andy Wood, who on debut had an excellent game and hat trick man Chris Holmes. This move took our game up to a level Romney could not cope with and we added 4 further goals, with a Ryan Smith free kick a Mark Howells penalty, a Karl Seni 20 yard shot and a sharp finish from Ryan Norman, this left the final score 7-0. A very good display all around with all 14 players contributing and there was a real buzz about our play, lets hope we can continue in the same vein for the weeks ahead. Next week we travel to play Bly Spartans, looking to complete the double over them. This will be a tough fixture and a real test for the team and if we can come away with a victory it would be a massive boost for the season.

A reminder that 4 of the team (C.Smith, R.Smith, M.Hadlum, G.Mackett) are in action for the county rep side on wed at Tunbridge Wells against Sussex, good luck to them all, the rep side has been drawn away to Guernsey in the national cup and a good display from the lads will hopefully keep their place in the squad. Team: C.Smith, B,Davis, R.Smith, M.Hadlum, L.Marshall, M.Howells, C.Howells, G.Mackett, R.Norman, A.Wood, C.Holmes. Subs K.Seni (B.Davis) D.Cornel (C.Holmes) C.Norman(A.Wood) MoM: G.Mackett took control of the midfield from start to finish

Green back to winning ways

Ashford Cavaliers 2 Bromley Green 4
Three much-needed points at the Goldwyn for the Green who were pushed all the way by the battling Cavaliers side. Indeed it was the home team that started impressively with skipper Pat Law hitting the bar from a free kick and had Matt Gomez been more composed in front of goal a different story could have developed. As it was, an inswinging corner by Robbie Greenfield gave the visitors lead and Glen Mackett netted from close range after a fine move to give a 2-0 interval scoreline. When Glen Rolfe fired in a third, it looked all over but credit to the home side who fought back to 3-2. Eventually the result was put beyond doubt when the hard-working Tom Poyner drove in number four.

Considering the pitch and general rustiness all round, the game was a credit to the league, well refereed, and on this form Cavaliers will soon pull away from relegation worries. Dean Rolfe, despite his verbals, was outstanding for the winners while Paul Allen and Kevin Friend were the pick of Cavaliers. Next week the lads have no scheduled fixture.

Green: C Smith; D Valler, D Rolfe, J Lockett, M Hadlum, M Thomas, G Mackett, R Greenfield, L Milton, G Rolfe, T Poyner. Subs: L Holman, T Perk

Saturday firsts thrash New Romney 7-0 in Kent Intermediate Shield

Chris Holmes headed a hat trick as the Green stormed into the next round of the Kent Intermediate Shield with this sound performace on Saturday at the Swan Ground. Also on target as the boys began to buzz were Ryan Smith, Mark Howells (p), Ryan Norman and Karl Seni. Superb work by Glenn Mackett and Chris Howells in the middle of the park provided the foundation for a splendid team performance and Dave Smith will not be alone in wondering why we don’t exude this air of confidence every week. Full report to follow

Reserves shock 2-1 defeat at Lydd

Alfie Pickard told The Green Line ‘I am disappointed; we had a bad day at the office, the referee was poor but so were we. However, I am now looking forward to a return to winning ways next Saturday’. Lee Milton netted the Green consolation goal but the day of woe was compounded with the sending off of Tommy Lockett. This setback means the reserves drop to second and will be keen to dispose of Platt United Reserves at home (2pm)

Sunday seconds depleted

The Sunday Reserves had eight players missing for reasons of work, suspensions, illness and injury and inevitably found Churchills too much on the day, going down 6-0. Phil Wedge did however pick out Nick Owen and John Brewster as having useful games. Next week the boys play Quest in the Sheber Cup.

Under 16s win at Margate

Bromley Green Under 16s kept up their title challenge with a 5-2 away win against Thanet. Details to follow on the Youth Football tab.

Sunday’s win away to Thanet

Thanet Colts 2-5 Bromley Green We moved to 6 points behind leaders Betteshanger with two games in hand with a hard fought victory over Thanet Colts. The day didn’t start well when I got half the team lost on the way to the ground and we arrived 5 minutes late. We kicked off about 10 mins late. For this I apologise to Thanet, to the parents, to Tony and most importantly to the boys for some unnecessary pressure. The boys however knuckled down! Thanet won the toss and elected to attack with a very strong wind behind them. They started brightly but too often played long and Liam, who was once again impeccable, cleaned most things up. Thanet did strike first when Jordan was adjudged to bring down a yellow shirt in the box. The penalty gave Liam no chance. The boys to their credit dug deep.

Good defending and talking allowed us to soak up Thanet’s pressure and we began to look dangerous on the break. Reece found himself in on goal and despite some resolute defending slotted home the equaliser at the second attempt. Matty Jarvis looked lively alongside Reece and was denied his first goal for the club by a good stop from the Keeper. Moments later Reece broke through again – another fine save from the keeper meant Kieran slid home to make it 1-2. This was deserved as we began playing some good football against the wind. George and Aaron were strong in midfield really putting themselves about whilst Dan, Kieran and John were giving good options wide. With such a strong wind against us and with us being so rushed to come in at half time 1-2 up was brilliant and testament to the boys who are all so determined to win this league. We told the boys to go out in the second half with a 0-0 mindset – to not get suckered into a long ball game with a wind which was too strong for this to work.

On several occasions this season we have played with a wind and the discipline of the boys is brilliant. They listen – get the ball down and play some lovely football. This was the case again. George and Aaron’s composure in the middle of the park left Thanet chasing shadows a lot of the time. One of Thanet’s better players was their skipper but George and Aaron played around him fantastically. Thanet were now dependent on the break. A super stop from Liam kept us in the lead with a fine hand on a fierce shot to push it over the bar. Then some good play by Martyn on the right picked out Kieran who slotted home his second of the game for 1-3. Thanet responded well with a goal after breaking through on right and tapping in. Liam then came to our rescue with a fine stop at the feet of the striker. This was what the boys needed as they tightened up.

Jamie and Adam at full back prevented the wide threats and Jordan and Joe were superb in the air. Some good work from Turkey and Aaron on the left found Reece who smashed home is second and our fourth to seal the game. Martyn Dalby wrapped up the scoring with a fine run and finish to make it 5. Liam made sure we kept a healthy score line with another top save clawing away a long distance effort with Jamie behind him ready to clear it if it beat him. Overall I am happy with the result and the performance.

There were a few signs of rustiness as we haven’t played in so long. But the determination was there to see and we have kept ourselves well and truly in the running. Big thanks to Dan C who filled in on the right in Smithy’s absence and to all the boys for a great team effort. The team spirit in the squad is brilliant. Thank you also to the parents that drove, Chris, Teresa, Alan, Mick and Mr Wall (Sorry for not remembering your first name). Also to those there supporting. Team: Liam, Adam J, John, Joe (Capt), Jordan, Martyn, Dan, Aaron, George, Kieran, Matt, Reece, Jamie. MoM: Stand out performance from several. I mentioned George and Martyn who were excellent, but all the boys were great. But it goes to Aaron who controlled the game superbly.
