The weekend in brief (22.2.09)

Sunday evening round-up:

Andy Wood scores but Green firsts go down to an 86th minute penalty at Rusthall in the Kent Intermediate Shield…final score 2-1

Green Reserves third defeat on the trot (4-1 at home to second-placed Borden Village Reserves) sees a drop to 7th place

In Division One East of the Kent County League, Kennington gain a useful three points from a single goal victory over visitors APM Mears but the Ashford side’s second string go down 3-1 to to leaders New Romney Reserves in the Reserves Eastern Division

A bad day for Lydd Town with a 2-1 league reversal at home to the old enemy New Romney compounded by the Lydders Reserves thumping 12-0 defeat away to  Oakwood Reserves

On Sunday, the Green firsts went behind in three seconds and were 3-0 down after ten minutes to visiting Kennington. Well taken goals by Kev Barrett and Glenn Mackett gave some hope but basic errors contributed to a 6-2 Premier Cup loss and we wish Kennington all the best for the next round.

Scores from Richard Floyd and Lee Bloxham gave manager Phil Wedge something to smile about after last week’s debacle at Appledore as the Green seconds edged a 2-1 victory over The Albion at The Ridge to end any lingering worries about getting caught up in a relegation scrap

Feel sympathy for depleted visitors Hawkinge Youth who were on the end of a 30-0 walloping from the Green U16s on Sunday afternoon

Full match reports from managers are scheduled to appear on the Match Reports link shortly

Another great weekend ahead

Firsts go to Rusthall with Steve Mailey in charge for their Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield quarter final while the seconds must return to winning ways against Borden Village Reserves. The senior side are expected to be at full strength but there are suspensions looming in the near future for Craig Smith and Chris Howells (red card while playing for Mersham on a Sunday). Tommy Lockett is banned for the visit of Borden and Alfie Pickard and Trent Thomas will be looking for a special effort from their charges after two very disappointing defeats that has seen them toppled from the top of the table. Kev Barrett, Jason Reynolds and John Lockett  have the class to see off local rivals Kennington at the Swan Ground in the Premier Division Cup with skipper Glenn Mackett again relied upon to pull the strings. Gary Mickelborough begins a three-week suspension while Glen Rolfe is cup tied and will be with the seconds. Sunday afternoon sees the visit of Hawkinge Youth for a vital Molten East Kent Youth League fixture (2pm). Look forward to seeing you there. Good luck to all the Green sides this coming weekend. DH.

Under 16s Extra Training

Will all of the Under 16 squad please note that there is a double dose of training this week. The usual Highworth slot on Tuesday evening and also on THURSDAY 19 FEBRUARY at THE SWAN GROUND commencing at 1pm. All squad members are asked to attend both sessions. DH.

Reserves out of cup

Despite a stirring second half comeback, the Green Reserves went out at the semi final stage of their Divisional Cup to a rejuvenated Appledore side that is looking to achieve the double under coach Paul Giles. Only a goal down at the break after their defence was caught for pace, the Green went further behind after a series of errors before rallying and having the better of the second half exchanges. With Reece Hagger outstanding at the back and a midfield that worked hard against very useful opposition, there appeared every chance of extra time being forced when Lee Bloxham took his chance well. However, a block shot somehow flew into the net past Shaun Dadd and that was that. Full report from the manager will follow on Match Reports link later.

Saturday night briefly

Plenty of games called off again today with just one Kent County League match surviving [Stansfeld O&B Club 3 Cray Valley 0 which keeps the home side well placed for a title challenge]. Nearer home, New Romney gained a comfortable 4-0 victory over visitors Guru Nanak in Division One while the improved form of Lydd Town Reserves continued with a deserved point from a 1-1 home draw against University of Kent Reserves in the Eastern Reserves Division. Of the local senior sides, in the Kent League, Hythe maintained their bid for Ryman football next term with a 1-0 home win over Croydon while at Bourne Park Sittingbourne and Ashford ended all square at 1-1.

Turning to the Ashford Sunday League, the only Green game on this weekend is at Appledore in the morning when the Dores start hot favourites to win the Division Two Cup semi final tie against Phil Wedge’s second string. After some disappointing recent outings and a stop-start season, Wedge has challenged some of his players to start playing to their ability.

Postponements update: Saturday night

The only Green game on tomorrow (Sunday) is the Divisional Cup semi-final at Appledore (10.30 kick off)

SUNDAY’S GAME AT SMARDEN AGAINST TROGGS IS OFF DUE TO THE STATE OF THE PITCH AFTER TODAY’S GAME

Saturday 2.30pm update: THE CUP SEMI FINAL AT APPLEDORE TOMORROW IS ON

Friday pm update: ALL BROMLEY GREEN HOME GAMES ARE OFF THIS WEEKEND DUE TO WATERLOGGED PITCHES

Friday 3.30pm: SHEERNESS GAME IS OFF

Clearly the torrential rain early in the week followed by melted snow has left pitches in a sodden state. There is a pitch inspection later today at Sheerness [now off] and on Saturday morning a decision will be made at Smarden (Troggs fixture); and as soon as there is any news we will let you know.  No news yet from Appledore, so let’s remain hopeful! Any players or supporters in doubt are advised to contact the respective team manager before travelling.
