Team chief Dave Smith reflects on the 2-1 defeat of Hawkhurst
There is no such thing as a bad win, so Saturday’s hard fought 2-1 victory over Hawkhurst,is a good result even if the performance was not the best and it now sees us with a Weald of Kent Charity Cup semi final away at near neighbours Kennington.
We started slowly and it was the visitors who had most of the possession, without really creating a good chance and it was in the last minute of the half that a good cross from Craig Norman was finished well by Dan Cornell to put us in the lead.
The second half was very much the same and it was no surprise when Hawkhurst levelled, from a long free kick not dealt with by our defence,in truth the visitors then missed a couple of golden chances,to finish the game off,but they were to regret not taking these, as direct from a corner Ryan Norman put us back in the lead. The last 15 mins were edgy but we held on for the win.
I do think the stop start nature of games being cancelled has not helped us get going since Christmas and the heavy pitches are very draining. But next week we travel to Sheerness for a real 6 pointer and we will need to be back to our best to come away with a victory.
Thanks to all the people who came to support and to Craig and Max for their help, sweeping the changing rooms and getting the goals ready.
