I stated before the kick off that I felt this was the most important game of my four so far. Unlike previous weeks, we had the luxury of naming substitutes as well! I felt confident that, if we showed the spirit and effort that we have begun to show, then we would get the points. With a couple of minor changes, we set out with the system I believe we can use for much of the remaining season and has served us well of late.

To be fair, much of the first half was played out in midfield. We were strong there again and forced the visitors into errors quite often. Craig pulled off a good reaction save, tipping over from under the bar. At the other end, we had made their keeper work a few times, although not too hard.

We went looking for the long distance pass or the diagonal cross field 35 yard ball far too often for my liking – the ten yard pass is what was needed. Fortunately, there is enough brain power on the pitch to recognise this also, so no surprise when we put together a move from midfield, involving several passes on the floor, culminating in a terrific low drive from Robbie Greenfield which left the keeper no chance. A fine reward for someone who has been working hard and who is really starting to enjoy the formation we’re trying.

At the break, we agreed on some simple things, and went straight out with a positive mind. That self belief was evident again, as we extended our margin soon into the second half. It was former Aldington player Glen Rolfe who reacted first to a scramble / mix up and slotted home.

Aldington made some expected changes which saw us come under pressure. Our back line, with BJ in particular, dealt with it well, and Craig pulled off a couple more good saves. The pace of the game did see us start to lose our shape a little out wide, leaving us a little vulnerable, but there was enough ability out there to sort things out. Aldington, it must be said, were missing Stuart Daniels, which does make them a different type of team to defend against. Even so, we worked hard as a team and kept control of our opponents well.

We added fresh legs up front with Mickelborough & Curtis replacing Poyner & Rolfe. This helped a lot as we still managed to create several chances to kill the game off, although we had to settle for 2-0 in the end. The plus points – well BJ was immense and receives the Man Of The Match in return, young Aaron clearly doesn’t intend to give up his place too easily, and Carter showed real improvement. But the continued all round attitude and team effort is the real plus point. Well done to all.
