In cold, unpleasant weather at the Swan Ground on Sunday afternoon, a goalless draw against local rivals Kennington proved sufficient to secure second place for the Under 16s in the Molten East Kent Youth League. Keeper Liam Wratten pulled off two wonderful saves but this was a battling performance by the whole squad, especially during a second half of heavy pressure as the Green battled against the wind. Jordan O’Gorman epitomised the Green spirit by playing throughout despite an ankle injury. Earlier, a close-fought game between the Green Reserves and Egerton ended 2-1 in favour of the villagers who had poor marking to thank for their success. Lee Bloxham notched the consolation score. Manager Phil Wedge, who dropped himself despite last week’s scoring exploits, is likely to introduce more youth alongside the outstanding Rhys Hagger with Joe Barton and Reece Murrell keen to make their mark in senior football. The game was a credit to Divison Two and handled with common sense by referee Kevin Lee.
Other results through the grapevine today, subject to confirmation, Market nicked their cup tie with Kennington after extra time while Bethersden hammered eight past Bliby and Troggs laboured to a 2-0 win over Ashford Cavaliers. Appledore just got the better of Churchills 5-4 on penalties after their Division Two cup final provided a stalemate after ninety minutes and extra time at blustery Homelands.
Reviewing Saturday, Green firsts and Milton share the spoils from a 2-2 draw at the Swan Ground while our seconds have to settle for a point from their 2-2 draw at bottom side APM Mears Reserves. Sheerness beat Snodland 3-1 to make things even more uncertain at the bottom of the County Premier. In Division One, an unimpressive APM Mears outfit went down 4-1 at home to Kennington and bottom side Lydd pushed leaders Canterbury City all the way before narrowly losing out 3-2 at the Lindsay Field. In the Reserves Division, Kennington seconds slumped to a 2-1 home defeat by Lydd Reserves whilst New Romney’s Reserves strolled to 4-0 victory over Borden Village Reserves. Reports from Green managers to follow.
Congratulations to Lloyd Douglas who yesterday became the proud father of a baby boy (Henry).
