Weekend round up

In cold, unpleasant weather at the Swan Ground on Sunday afternoon, a goalless draw against local rivals Kennington proved sufficient to secure second place for the Under 16s in the Molten East Kent Youth League. Keeper Liam Wratten pulled off two wonderful saves but this was a battling performance by the whole squad, especially during a second half of heavy pressure as the Green battled against the wind. Jordan O’Gorman epitomised the Green spirit by playing throughout despite an ankle injury. Earlier, a close-fought game between the Green Reserves and Egerton ended 2-1 in favour of the villagers who had poor marking to thank for their success. Lee Bloxham notched the consolation score. Manager Phil Wedge, who dropped himself despite last week’s scoring exploits, is likely to introduce more youth alongside the outstanding Rhys Hagger with Joe Barton and Reece Murrell keen to make their mark in senior football. The game was a credit to Divison Two and handled with common sense by referee Kevin Lee.

Other results through the grapevine today, subject to confirmation, Market nicked their cup tie with Kennington after extra time while Bethersden hammered eight past Bliby and Troggs laboured to a 2-0 win over Ashford Cavaliers. Appledore just got the better of Churchills 5-4 on penalties after their Division Two  cup final provided a stalemate after ninety minutes and extra time at blustery Homelands.

Reviewing Saturday, Green firsts and Milton share the spoils from a 2-2 draw at the Swan Ground while our seconds have to settle for a point from their 2-2 draw at bottom side APM Mears Reserves. Sheerness beat Snodland 3-1 to make things even more  uncertain at the bottom of the County Premier. In Division One, an unimpressive APM Mears outfit went down 4-1 at home to Kennington and bottom side Lydd pushed leaders  Canterbury City all the way before narrowly losing out 3-2 at the Lindsay Field.  In the Reserves Division, Kennington seconds slumped to a 2-1 home defeat by Lydd Reserves  whilst New Romney’s Reserves strolled to 4-0 victory over Borden Village Reserves. Reports from Green managers to follow.

Congratulations to Lloyd Douglas who yesterday became the proud father of a baby boy (Henry).

Preview of the weekend

We are rapidly approaching the business end of a stop-start season and four of our sides have important and attractive fixtures. Without doubt the big one is on Saturday when Milton and Fulston visit the Swan Ground for a Kent County Premier Division clash that team manager Dave Smith has rightly termed a ’6-pointer’. With Craig Smith suspended, Steve Hickmott is expected to deputise in goal for a game that has a 2.45pm kick off. Alfie and Trent are determined to build on last week’s narrow win when their Green Reserve lads tackle APM Mears Reserves at Cobdown. There is no game for the Sunday seniors but the Reserves entertain double chasers Egerton (10.30am).

In the afternoon, the Under 16s seek the single point that will clinch runner-up spot when neighbours Kennington are the visitors.

Five Green lads invited to Guernsey National Cup Tie

Dave Smith reports from Sevenoaks on Wednesday’s County match
Just a quick note about the rep game last night when Kent lost 3-2 after being 2-0 up. Glenn Mackett was unavailable due to work and Craig Smith was suspended. Ryan Smith played the full 90 minutes, but unfortunately deflected the winning goal into his own net in the last minute. Ryan Norman played 80 mins and Matt Hadlum the last 30.
All 5 lads have been invited to travel to Guernsey on 28 March for the national cup game. I think this is a tremendous achievement for not only themselves, but for the club as well and as a manager I am pleased that we have such ability in the club.

Davies: bring back Chopper Harris!

On the eve of the crucial home clash with Milton and Fulston, Green stalwart Mickey Davies has been talking to The Patron about the past and his ambitions for the future. After coming back from a host of dreadful injuries, Mickey is as enthusiastic as ever to get us back to the top…he also wants the pansies out of football: “Bring back the days of Chopper Harris!” Read more of Mick’s thoughts by clicking on ‘The Players  tab’.

Below: Ron ‘Chopper’ Harris in his Chelsea days … the kind of tackle that Mickey Davies really appreciates!

Congratulations!

The club sends its congratulations to full back Liam Marshall and his wife who today became the proud parents of a baby girl

Unlucky but heads held high

Report from Craig on the U16 match 1.3.2009

Sunday saw us Betteshanger it what was basically a title decider. A  win for us and we would need 2 more wins for the title, a point for  the visitors on what was their final game and they would take the title. We started brightly, pushing the game forward and asserting ourselves  on a physically strong team. A quick free kick from Aaron to Dan C and  back again bought the first goal as Aarons teasing cross caught  Betteshanger offguard and a defender diverted the ball into his own  goal. Betteshanger responded brightly but the back 4 and Liam matched  everything that came at them. One fine save from Liam in particular.  We almost extended our lead twice. First Dan C saw his 35 yard curler  fantastically saved and then a counter attack saw Dan find Reece who  forced another fine save from the keeper. Betteshanger had nice  posesdion but didn’t really get behind us as we defended resolutely  and counter attacked well. At half time I think we were good value for  our lead. As it stood we were in control but after the interval Betteshanger  were on level terms as a corner was knocked in at the back post. This  was the incident that changed the game. From that point onwards we  pushed and Betteshanger defended. Well. We knew before the game that  Betteshanger were good going forward but that their open style meant  we would get chances. They defended strongly and consistently making  us workhard for our chances. Kieran hit the post with a header,  several last ditch blocks from efforts of Martyn, Aaron, jack and  Reece – dan C started influencing the game and for 10 mind  Betteshanger were barely touching the ball but they continued to  defend resolutely.. Liam was becoming a spectator and with15 to go we  gambled. Joe B made way for Krysz making us 3-4-3. We continued to  push. 10 mins to go saw Adam J replace George as we pushed Martyn  forward and with 5 to go Jamie made way for Matt J as we played 2-4-4.  Aaron started to control the game and with 2 mins remaining a David  Platt like volley from Kieran looked to have gone in only for it to be  side netting. The last minute saw us launching the ball in the box and  some top blocks saw the Betteshanger lads through. Congratulations to them as they beat everyone twice only dropping 5  points all season – against us. They worked hard and showed real grit. I am immensley proud of my lads we almost got it and the performance  from all was top draw. Special notes to Liam, Az, Kieran and Jordan.  Jamie and Jack controlled the left side also. But everyone was class!  We now need a draw on Sunday to confirm 2nd place – we will be looking  for 3 points as overall 2 points from our last 2 games will see us  clinch second. Team: Liam, Jamie, Martyn, Joe (C), Jordan, George, Aaron, Jack, Dan, Reece, Kieran, Krysz, Adam, Matt J. MoM: everyone ideally they were all great but it goes to Dan C, best  performance of the season.

Change of strip

Alfie and Trent…please note we need a change of kit for the game at Cobdown this Saturday against APM Mears Reserves.
