Dave Homewood reports from The Avenue 20 years on to the day
It seemed a bit odd on Wednesday night as the Green seconds played Romney’s reserves; for it was 20 years to the day of the Hillsborough disaster (15.4.89) that our first teams were meeting down The Avenue in the Kent Amateur Senior Division and we all watched the events unfold on television.  Whilst the fare on offer tonight may have lacked the quality of those halycon days, there was no lack of endeavour from either side. The Blues, chasing the Eastern Reserves Division title, were pushed all the way and the Green really deserved a share of the spoils. As it was, the match was decided by an early blunder by Shaun Dadd, returning in goal after injury. Shaun, excellent afterwards, will be the first to hold his hands up…it was one of those nightmare moments that all goalies dread. Lots of positives for Phil and Trent to build on. Red card for Tommy Lockett and yellows for Matt Wedge and Chris Howells. The Saturday Reserves have no fixture this weekend.
Wednesday (15 April) Phil Wedge has pledged to play youngsters rather than put up with the indisciplined antics that ruined last week’s home game with New Romney Reserves. Tonight’s  kick off down The Avenue is at 6.30pm.
alfie-pickard-2822009Alfie Pickard (left) has resigned as Saturday Reserves team manager with the side being taken until the end of the season by Phil Wedge and Trent Thomas. The team is in action next on Wednesday at New Romney (6.30).  Monday’s game with Premier leaders Fleet Leisure ended 4-0 in favour of the visitors after we were in the hunt following a goalless opening half. Players interested in being involved should show an interest in training tomorrow night at the ground (details below).
Easter Monday morning…sorry for short notice…
An Emergency Meeting of Executive and Managers will be held at 4.30pm today [after the first team match] at the ground
Your attendance is requested
I am just going off line to get ready to go the ground, so no further email correspondence will be entered into
Again, apologies for rush…but something has just come up that needs dealing with

Cheers DH

Monday The Saturday first team will be grateful for your support on Easter Monday when table-toppers Fleet chris-howells-feb-2009Leisure visit the Swan Ground for a Kent County League Premier game that holds huge implications at both ends of the table. A boost for the club is the return after injury and suspension of midfielder Chris Howells (pictured left). Kick off is at 2.30pm.

Tuesday I have been inundated with texts and phone calls lately asking about training arrangements. Once and for all, can we make it known that THERE IS CLUB NIGHT AND TRAINING AT THE GROUND EVERY TUESDAY. THE DOORS WILL OPEN AT 5.30. TRAINING FOR THE YOUNGER ELEMENT AND ANYONE ELSE WHO ARRIVES EARLY STARTS AT 5.45. TRAINING FOR SENIORS STARTS AT 6.30 [FORMER UNDER 16s ARE STILL EXPECTED TO TRAIN AND JOIN IN WITH THE SENIORS WHEN THEY FEEL READY]. SO, FOR THE LAST TIME, EVERYBODY IS EXPECTED TO BE AT THE GROUND ON TUESDAY EVENINGS! Thanks DH

Wednesday The Saturday Reserves are away to New Romney Reserves (6.30)

Easter weekend details as they arrive…

Sunday lunchtime update: Reserves beat Burton Grove 5-1 to go into Sheber final but firsts collapse in extra time away to Bliby in the Charity. 1-1 at full time with Robbie Greenfield netting another splendid goal for the Green. Details and Green managers’ reports to follow. Elsewhere, Market edged nearer the title with a 5-1 defeat of Ashford Cavaliers but the visitors were doing well for 75 minutes with the sides locked at 1-1. Kennington look out of the running after losing 4-2 to Bethersden. More news as it arrives.

Sunday morning’s visitors: Burton Grove, formed in 2001 as Riverside Inn,  are our guests this morning for a Sheber Cup semi final (10.30). Nicknamed ‘The Hoops’, the side plays at The Ridge in Division Three against the likes of Shadoxhurst, Locomotive and William Harvey.  Their danger man is prolific scorer James Ross. On their way to the semis, Burton have beaten Market Reserves 6-4 and Brabourne 5-2, both matches needing extra time.

Saturday night briefly: firstly, congratulations to our neighbours Kennington who won the Weald of Kent Charity final on Good Friday against in fairness a pretty poor Swale outfit.  Also, congratulations go to Alan Webster alan-webster-february-20091(pictured left) who celebrates his 60th birthday this weekend. On the pitch, no luck again for the Green first team on Saturday, missing out 3-2 to second placed Orpington after  Dan Cornell had given hope during the second half. Liam Marshall was added to the long injury list before kick off but at least Chris Howells should be back for Monday’s home clash with table-toppers Fleet Leisure. Dave Smith’s report to follow. No game for our reserves today. Tomorrow the firsts hope to have Kevin Barrett and John Lockett back in action for the trip to Bliby while the seconds chase Sheber Cup success against visitors Burton Grove at the Swan Ground.

Mackett, Howells, Hagger, Hadlum, Davies, Misfud, Thomas, Coglan, Major, Dadd … injury situation worsens as the busy Easter period is upon us…

Friday night update

matt-hadlum-march-2009

Hadlum: “I’ll be fit”.  Key defender Matt Hadlum is expected to play through the pain barrier this weekend as he fights against a hip injury.

Good Friday lunchtime update

GOALKEEPING LEGEND WILLIAMS CALLED UP FOR SEMI FINAL

Mickey Davies is definitely out of the Orpington and Fleet holiday games with damaged ankle ligaments while lee-williams-at-his-500-apps-nightVice President Lee Williams is poised to make  a dramatic Sunday return in goal for the Sheber Cup semi final against Burton Grove. Davies who captained the Saturday seniors on Wednesday night is gutted that yet again injury is going to force him to be a bystander at a crucial stage of the season. Goalkeeping legend ‘Lurch’ (pictured left) has answered an SOS call from Phil Wedge to replace the injured Shawn Dadd. Wedge has already stated that should we reach the final then the experienced Williams will stay in goal with Dadd hopefully fit to slot into a defence already robbed of Reece Hagger.

The absence of key defender Lee Gilham for two years through serious injury seems to have set a trend that has made a difficult job even harder for managers this season. A string of injuries, plus it has to be said far too many suspensions, has led to teams changing their line-ups every match. With Joe Misfud (shoulder) not kicking a single ball in earnest this season and Jason Thomas (knee) restricted to a handful of outings and unlikely to reappear until next term, club captain Glenn Mackett (back) is the latest to join Reece Hagger (ankle fracture) on the crocks list. Chris Howells (ankle) is thankfully on the mend and he is back in training but the returning Matt Coglan has still to pull a Green shirt on and is not fit enough to even sit on the bench. Of real concern is some very nasty looking injuries at Bly Spartans on Wednesday night to Micky Davies and Matt Hadlum. Davies fell awkwardly on his ‘other’ ankle while Hadlum has aggravated a hip injury. James Major looks unlikely to play again this season and in fact the Sunday Reserves situation seems to worsen by the hour with keeper Shawn Dadd described as ‘extremely doubtful’ for Sunday’s semi final after injuring an ankle at 5-a-side on Thursday night. Still, we have to get on with it, and there is no lack of action for Green supporters with the Saturday firsts facing two attractive but hard home matches against Orpington and then Fleet Leisure on Monday [please note kick off has been put back to 2.30pm as the visitors did not agree to a morning start]. Sunday sees the firsts away to Bliby in the Charity and the seconds at home to Burton Grove in the Sheber Cup.

liam-holman-saturday-res-28220091Steve Mailey has suffered another blow with the news that the versatile Liam Holman (left) now has to work every Sunday. Liam has been the perfect clubman since joining us mid-season and always gives 100% whichever team he is selected to play for.

Looking ahead, next Wednesday the Saturday reserves are down the Avenue for the return fixture with New Romney Reserves. Good luck to all the Green sides this weekend and most importantly enjoy your football.

Latest reports from the managers

Worst performance earns vital win!

A much needed victory, with probably our worst performance for a few weeks, against what appeared to be an under strength Lewisham side. This win has moved us of the bottom up 2 places and hopefully will give the confidence to go and pick up more points from our congested finish to the season. First we have the return with Lewisham on Wed 22nd at 8.00 under lights then we face Stansfield away on Sat 25th.

We started the game poorly and Lewisham took the lead in the 10th min when a miss hit cross shot was turned into his own goal by James Gardener. We were having trouble coping with there skilful forwards, but were having joy going forward as there defence looked as rocky as ours, We levelled in the 30th min when Glenn Mackett glanced home Ryan Smith’s free kick,1-1 at half time.

The second half started with both sides pushing forward, but the gusty wind and bumpy pitch made good football difficult. We took the lead in the 65 min when Andy Wood burst through and finished well for his first league goal. Lewisham then wasted 2 good chances to level and were punished for this when Wood again out paced the defence to put us 3-1 up. Again Lewisham missed chances to reduce the arrears, but we also were guilty of this when Andy Wood should have completed his hat trick with a free header and Craig Norman after excellent individual work missed the target.

The game ended 3-1 and the relief was evident from all at the club. Like I have stated it was not our best performance but the guys stuck at it and showed good desire and commitment, well-done to you all.

Steve Mailey’s Sunday First Team Report (19 April 2009)

Troggs 1 v 1 Bromley Green

After watching Dave Smith’s side earn a deserved win on Saturday, Green should have been looking forward to a trio of wins this weekend. However, two no shows through work, a no show through family matters and a simple no show meant my small squad was suddenly over stretched yet again. Two 16 year olds and the reliable Mark Day completed the 12 man squad that travelled to high flying Troggs. Attempts were made to strengthen – but that frankly proved to be a complete waste of time and effort!

As for the game, we competed well against a tall and strong side. After a scrappy opening twenty, we began to play some good stuff. We did the simple things and were the better side. We found ourselves on the edge of their area several times without making it count. The close team spirit actually seems to be growing in recent weeks as we continue to battle on regardless. The pressure continued and was rewarded when Robbie, again, gambled and reacted well to smash home form 3 yards to give us the lead at the break.

The second half saw a very even contest. The option of adding more experience was not available to me, yet was clearly needed. Troggs continued to press and levelled the game when we failed to deal with what appeared to be a harmless venture into our area. The game became more stretched as skipper Mackett pushed on and the hosts played into the space left behind him. The result of 1-1 was probably fair in the end.

Yet another ‘new’ back line coped well and my reliable middle three battled for everything. G Rolfe put in a top display up front, getting through a lot of work. The older and more experienced heads came through for me today, guiding the younger ones well. Man of the match will go to Mackett for his all round contribution. C Smith, Poyner, Neil, Perk and L Milton are others worth a mention for varying reasons. Troggs acknowledged the input from young Aaron Neil, although I’m sticking with Macca (sorry Az!).

So just the two wins for Green this weekend – but we did all we could with the players available and they deserve credit for their efforts.

Dave Smith looks back on a punishing Easter programme

A bank holiday to forget, no points and with Sheerness finding form, we now sit at the bottom of the league. Saturday saw us take on title chasing Orpington,a 3-2 defeat does not look to bad but i felt our visitors had other gears to use when required. They dominated the early play and took the lead when Matt Hadlum, trying to save the ball deflected it in to his own net.1-0 at half time gave us hope and early in the second half a defencive error by our visitors saw Dan Cornell finish superbly to bring us level. The game then turned nasty with Orpington having a player dismissed for a dangerous head butt,we then needed to take control of the game, but Orpington responded well and regained the lead, when Liam Smith deflected into his own net,2 soon became 3,when there forward was allowed to much room in the box  and scored easily. We pulled a gaol back in the last minute with another own goal, but could not go on to level matters.A good effort from the lads, who at times played good football, but Orpington are a strong side who now how to win.

Steve Mailey reflects on the Charity Trophy exit

Bliby 6 v 1 Bromley Green – after extra time

(1-1 after 90 minutes)

Anyone reading the score line will assume this was all one way traffic. Well for 100 minutes it was a close fought physical cup tie. With some key players missing through injury, rule restrictions or simply not turning up, we had little to call upon other than the spirit of those present. The first half saw us compete well, although we were a little nervous with the ball. Even when going a goal down, we still managed some good chances ourselves. At the break, I asked for us to calm things a bit and keep the ball more. We didn’t have to wait long to be back in the tie as Robbie Greenfield again popped up with a superb strike to level things.

The second half continued with, I feel, us looking more dangerous than our hosts. Our back line was working very hard and our keeper pulling off some key stops whilst playing with an injury. Barrett looked solid and Robbie lively as we fought hard to cope with the Bliby middle quality. Carter & Neil both offered well out wide in a game played at a high pace in a warm temperature.

With the scores level at full time, we went into extra time feeling we were more than capable of winning the tie. An early strike by the visitors set us back and a third seemed to completely flatten us. Some had played a lot of football this week and were suffering as a result. Everyone had worked so hard and all the aches and pains hurt more once the tie seemed to be slipping from us. In the end, we were dead on our feet, as we collapsed to a 6-1 defeat. I wish Bliby well in the semi final.

For 90 minutes we were matching our hosts, and I’m sure could beat them with the return of certain players. However, we cannot escape the fact that, today, the fitter side went on to romp home in this one! Many thanks to all for the effort shown, and a mention for Kieran Hawkins – the young lad came along to ‘sample’ how we do things and ended up playing 120 minutes! Man of the match is a tough one – but I’m going for Terry Perk again. Also a special mention for all those who came to support the side.

Allison reports on the Sunday Reserves march into the Sheber Cup final

For the second week running the lads dictated the pace of the game from the kick off, after going close on a couple of occasions early on. It took a wonderful strike from young Darryl Hagger to open the scoring and this was closely followed by a close range effort by MoM of the match Charlie Clarke. After a 10 minute spell of passing the ball around Ash Webster popped up to slot home goal number 3. This was soon followed by an absolutely sublime 35 yard volley from Matt Wedge and that’s how things remained till half time.

martin-dagostino-march-200910 minutes into the second half  a Burton Grove forward got lucky with a misplaced back pass and pulled one back for our visitors. But with Martin D’Agostino (pictured left) looking solid, this is how things remained till the final 10 minutes when Ash Webster once again popped up to do the business. Final score Green Reserves 5 Burton Grove 1.

Manager Phil Wedge added that he is really proud of the boys’ attitude and temperament in getting to this final: “I just hope we continue to play the way we have done in the last few games and do the club proud on 3 May. Special thanks also go our Vice President Ian Holloway for opening up the bar today”. Discipline was much better today although D’Agostino picked up a yellow card.

Dave Smith reflects on Wednesday night’s defeat in Strood…the old story of careless errors and missed chances

I could quite easily cut and paste a previous report from the games against Bearsted,Holland and Blair,Rusthall or Orpington as again we played good football, controlled the game for good periods but ended up losing 2-0,to a side that took their chances.

We started badly and were a goal down within 5 mins, when poor defending from a needless free kick saw the Bly forward slot home. But  full credit goes to the team, which had seven regulars missing as we gradually took control of the game and created some good chances, but a lack of composure in front of goal saw us go into the break 1-0.

The second half started with us again taking the game to the home side, three blocked shots in 30 seconds seemed to sum our night up,but we continued to show great determination and desire. But again as in several games this season we paid for some sloppy defending which saw Bly increase their lead to 2-0.This all but finished the game, but to the teams credit we drove ourselves on to the end,but all to no avail.

I was pleased with all the players, especially Syd Beal,Lee Milton and Liam Holman, who all came in at short notice from playing for the reserves the night before.

We now face 2 tough games over Easter with title challengers Orpington our first visitors on Saturday, then second placed Fleet coming to the Swan centre on Monday.I know my team will be up for these 2 crunch games and if we can reproduce some of the attacking football that we played yesterday, then we could pick up some much needed points.

Thanks to Dave, Tommy, Steve, Mr Holman, Max and Sara for their support, much appreciated by all the lads.

MOM  B.Davies great game but needs to do this every week
Bank holiday Monday saw us take on table topping Fleet. We new this would be a tough game a Fleet’s style,of long ball play with a constant aerial threat is hard to deal with. The first 45 mins saw us defend this tactic very well, with Ryan Smith and Matt Hadlum outstanding.I stressed at half time the need to carry this on,but a early penalty given away form keeper Craig Smith form a poor back pass saw us go 1 down,this in truth finished the game and Fleet added 3 further goals to end up winning 4-0.
The lads all came off very tired from two hard games in two days, but with no let up in the hectic fixture schedule, caused by sides calling games of to easily,we need to re group and dig deep,we now have games against a host of mid table sides, starting with Lewisham at home on Saturday.
Thanks to all the people who came and supported us over the weekend and to all at the club, who helped with setting up the two games, with their hard work and dedication to the club.

(Tues 7 April) Lack of discipline

Bromley Green Reserves 0 New Romney Reserves 6

The visitors took an early lead and the Green never recovered, in fact much of the game was embarrassing to watch. Not due to the scoreline – that’s football – but more to yet another display of petulance and lack of discipline. Frustration is no excuse for this loss of self control which saw us once again finish with ten men and it could have been worse. Some strong words as to the responsibilities of representing this club are needed. The Saturday Reserves have no fixture this weekend but make the return trip to Romney next Wednesday evening … let’s hope there is more dignity, composure and respect for the shirt on show.

Sunday First Team Report by Steve Mailey

Market Hotel 3 v 2 Bromley Green

This was never going to be easy with our current problems in defence. I asked for the effort and drive that has aided our steady improvement in recent weeks. To be totally honest, I only got it in stages. For whatever reason, we seemed to lack composure and suffered a dip in determination at key moments during the game.

Although starting quite well, we allowed too much space to the obvious talent available to Market’s attacking options. This resulted, in my opinion, in both the goals we conceded to go in 0-2 at the break. We spoke at the break and agreed on certain things. The spine of C Smith, Perk, Mackett and G Rolfe had performed well and continued to do so, and to be fair, we began the second half brightly. The change in attitude was rewarded when G Rolfe gambled and punished uncertainty in the Market area to bring us back in the game. We had belief again – but something was missing. Just when we looked like getting on top, we’d have another spell of ignoring the simple things!

An unfortunate error at the heart of our defence allowed Market to extend their lead again – Steve Harris worth a mention for the quality of the finish.

From that point on I felt a little disappointed because it looked as though some of us never really believed we could get back in to the game – and I don’t like that.

Some of the ‘senior’ players showed great desire, but we needed it from everyone. As if to prove the point, a Mackett effort against the bar and another put wide, seemed to spark us into life again. So when the skipper did find the net to set up a tight finish, it was annoying that the self belief had returned so late in the game as time ran out. Another few minutes and we may well have taken an unexpected point!

Lots of positives – but I’m more interested in the shortfall. I am convinced this group of players have the ability to compete in this division. I’m not so sure some of the lads share my view. With big games coming up, I look forward to the ‘senior’ lads joining me in demanding more belief from everyone as we look to improve further.

Along with the ‘spine’ mentioned earlier, Robbie Greenfield put in another good shift, but the MoM goes to Glenn Mackett, with Perk and C Smith not far behind.

Phil Wedge is delighted by the form of Sunday Reserves

With only a handful of games left the lads finally produced a perfomance they can be proud of. From the 1st whistle they started to dictate the game , with a back line of Milton , Curry , Floyd and D’Agostino who all  looked solid and with MoM Wedge in the centre of midfield our opponents never had chance to settle on the ball . And it was,nt long before  Bloxham fed the ever livley Webster who lobbed the keeper to put us 1 up . That settled the lads and we started to enjoy ourselves with several more chances going just wide it wasnt going to be long before the 2nd went in and it was Webster again who rose highest to meet a Wedge corner . Wedge then got his rewards when youngster Murrell layed the to Bloxham (who found out what he,s head is for y-day) who then played a great ball to Wedgey who didnt need a second invite to slot home number 3 . With the boys all working hard and going about there jobs in proffesinal manner (which previous green managers would be proud of) it wasWedgey again who picked the ball up on the half way line turned his man and fed Bloxham who slotted home our 4th just before the break . After the break manager Phil wedge made 3 quick substitutions which included a senior debut for young Jamie Hurst ,and we lost our shape for a while and a defensive lapse by Curry allowed a fortunate grasshoppers foward an open goal , that was the end of the scoring , but it wasnst through lack of trying with Jackson returning to the sort of form he showed earlier in the season going close on a couple of occasions . Manager PHIL WEDGE added all in all it was a really pleasing display , the way the lads played today is what ive been wanting all season i just hope they put in that sort of perfomance for the remainder of our games starting in the semi final on sunday.

Dave Smith reflects on the Weald exit

Another disappointing performance, saw us crash 3-1 against local rivals Kennington in the Weald of Kent semi- final.Full praise goes to the Kennington side as they thoroughly deserved there win

We started poorly and 2 defencive errors in the first 25 mins saw us fall 2-0 down,we slowly managed to drag ourselves out of the self inflicted hole, but trailed 2-0 at the break. The second half started again with us giving away another poor goal,to leave us with a mountain to climb,to our credit we did try to rally but it was all to late, although Dan Cornell did reduce the arrears with a well taken goal.

A bad day all round and a very disappointing result for the whole club. Now its back to the league and 10 vital games to maintain our premiership status.

Weekend round-up

Three defeats to old rivals this weekend does not make for good reading. In the Weald of Kent local derby at Kennington, we never properly recovered from early goals by former Green players Steve Harris and Danny Barham and went down 3-1; while a goal in the final seconds of added time saw the seconds lose 2-1 at home to Kent University Reserves after leading through Tom Poyner. By all accounts we were a shade unlucky to miss out 3-2 at Market but Phil Wedge described his sides 4-1 defeat of Grasshoppers as ‘quite superb’.  In the Sheber semi final, the boys welcome Burton Grove to the Swan Ground next Sunday. The other semi final will see the winners of Locomotive and Bliby Reserves against Brewmaster Reserves. The Brews progressed by virtue of a penalty shoot out at Shadoxhurst after the sides had finished locked at 4-4. In fact it was a good day for Barry Croucher’s club with the firsts winning their local Premier derby with Troggs 3-1. Reports from all the Green managers will be published on the Match Reports tab as they are received. Meanwhile congratulations to Lydd who had an inspired Dan Noden to thank as they moved into the semis of the Weald of Kent with an extra time midweek win at Rye, the game featuring a terrible injury to Lydders defender Scott Taylor. Official Ivor Groves said the final whistle of the tie  came at 10.30pm. Gary Mickelborough netted Hythe’s solitary goal at Reachfields to keep the seasiders on track for the Kent League title and possible Ryman League football next term…however, Holmesdale also won 1-0 and cannot be ruled out yet. More local news as it arrives.

Fifties star to attend awards night

george-stafford-early-1950s2

One of the Green stars of the 1950s, George Stafford, will be guest of honour at this year’s Annual Awards Night at the Elwick Club on Friday 19 June.  George, brother of the late club captain Tommy Stafford, will be over from his adopted homeland Australia to present the prestigious Tommy Stafford Youth Clubman of the Year Award and it is hoped Tom’s sons David and Stephen will also be in attendance for what promises to be a magical moment in the club’s history. Patron Dave Homewood is delighted at the news: “We may not be winning everything at the moment but some things transcend the whims of fortune and this exemplifies why our club is different and so special. I hear the word ‘respect’ so much these days and it worries me because my father always taught me it was a two-way process and you bloody well had to ‘earn’ it. What I do know is that there will be genuine respect and a huge welcome for George on behalf of the club as the Stafford family will always be a part of our heritage.  Last year Martyn Dalby deservedly won the Tommy Stafford Cup for the second successive season and received it from a true legend, John Roffey, as he departed Ashford. Whoever wins the award this time round should cherish the honour. I am also hoping Donna Hagger can persuade our beloved Vice President Una Knott to join us for the evening and present the Peter Knott Memorial Trophy. I am hopeful the team mascot from the early 1950s, Michael Teesdale, will join us and of course those greats from the past - Gary Holloway, John Kelly and Bob Mummery. It should be quite a night to begin a year-long celebration marking our 80th anniversary.”

This weekend…

All four senior sides are in action this weekend with the Saturday seniors going to Kennington for a Weald of Kent Cup tie (2.15pm kick off here) and the seconds welcoming the reserves of University of Kent to the Swan Ground for a Vandanel Kent County League Eastern Reserves Division fixture.  Chris Howells is  definitely out for the firsts while the reserves seem to have a number of players ‘working’ now that the title looks out of reach! On Sunday, the first team will badly miss broken ankle victim Reece Hagger for the trip to Market while the second string are likely to keep faith with youth for the visit of Lydd outfit Grasshoppers.
