Players can’t wait for new season

The season just finished will hardly go down as the most memorable in the club’s history but the positives are that the players are all sticking together and with just a few new quality signings there is a quiet air of confidence. The AGM is but a week away and all positions are provisionally covered with the exception of the Saturday Reserves manager – where talks with an experienced local manager are ongoing but formalities have still be be completed before an announcement can be made. There is already great anticipation concerning the awards night on 19 June and shortly after that training will begin in earnest. The Borough Council are to be congratulated for providing a floodlit multi-use games area which we will be able to use for training both juniors and seniors and, although it won’t be ready for this winter, it is an added facility from which ourselves and community partners at the The Swan Ground will gain enormous benefit. In fact the whole place is in line for a facelift as we try and get back on track both on and off the field. We are about to enter season 2009-2010 which marks the club’s 80th anniversary and the officers, managers, players and supporters are determined to make it something special.

As we strive for renewed success in our 80th anniversary year, a fair amount will depend upon these three who are still young but have plenty of experience. Mackett, who begins an incredible seventh year as club captain, has seen many comings and goings but continues to pledge his loyalty to the Green despite repeated overtures from elsewhere. Ryan has done the decent thing and informed Churchills that he now wants to play at a higher level on Sundays. Liam, passionate about the club and desperate to be a part of bringing back the glory days, is shortly to be featured on our meet the players page [click on The Players tab].

600 up as Lee Williams climbs to fifth in the all-time stats

Loyal club servant Lee Williams will be celebrating yet again at the awards night as he joins the elite in the top bracket of the appearances chart. Williams, recently called into Sheber cup final action, has moved on to pass the 600 milestone and, on 603, has overtaken such class acts as Chris Watson and Eddie Fitzgerald.  The latest top 40 is published on the Appearances tab.

Sat first managers season overview

Here is my review of the season, my first in charge of Bromley Green. D Smith.

Playing record

Kent County Premier League Played 28 Won 5 Drew 4 Lost 19 Points 19

14th position 2nd to bottom and relegated.

Inter regional cup 2nd round

Intermediate shield Quarter final

Weald of Kent semi-final.

A long season of many ups and downs, which saw us relegated from the premier league, but we are still hoping as happened last year, the league changes the number of teams in the premier and we manage to keep our place. If not then we have to get on with planning an immediate return, its not about rebuilding its about improving the quality and raising performances to get us to the level this club expects. If we do this we will again be a real force to be reckoned with.

The season started back in August, we got of to a good start, drawing with Stansfield and then beating Bly Spartens, a narrow 1-0 defeat to Phoenix ,was followed by a 8-1 at Cray, we bounced back from that by beating Sheerness, a 2-1 defeat at Orpington, where we produced one of the best performances of the season, was followed by victory at Milton a narrow defeat at Rusthall and a draw against Snodland.

We had competed well in the first part of the season, but now with the pitches getting heavy the team started to struggle, more defeats followed including a 8-1 mauling at Fleet. The cups now kicked in and we again produced some good performances, albeit against sides from lower divisions. The weather now became a factor, with a very wet start to the new year with many games called off, we had a period of 9 weeks without a league game, with a couple of cup games in between. We were out of 2 cups and had a back log of league games to get through, a draw with lowly Milton was our only point gained going into March.  A semi final defeat to Kennington in the Weald of Kent was a real low and with the sides around us starting to pick up the alarm bells were well and truly ringing.

Our next points came against Lewisham in April, with 4 out of 6 from 2 games in 5 days, but again the sides near to us picked up points as well. Then defeat against bottom placed Sheerness 3-0 was another huge blow. This left us 3 to play, another narrow defeat to Cray and a win against a weak Rusthall side saw us go into our last game needing a point to secure our league status, this eluded us and with Snodland winning saw us finish second from bottom.

Over the whole season i cannot question the commitment of all the players i used, it was easy to get a squad together each week and training from the first team squad was generally well attended. Our main down fall was in tight games we always seemed to able to gift the opposition a goal and then were punished when we had to chase the game.

My squad consisted of many players 19 or under, these players if they stick together will all become good county league players and bring this club the success it craves. We do need to add experience to the squad, as this will help us be more consistent and keep us organised. If we do go down our aim will be to win promotion and come back to the premier with a side that can really compete and challenge.

My thanks go to all the committee at the club for all there hard work to back the side up and a special thanks to all the people who came and supported us especially on our many long away trips, this was much appreciated by the players and myself.

My last thank you goes to my wife Max, who prepared the food for all games this season as well as being the one who takes the brunt of the crap when the dust has settled after the weekends results and without her support my role would be even harder.

Season over: now planning begins

S Mailey 14 May 2009Steve Mailey reports on Thursday night’s final knockings in the Sunday Premier

Bromley Green 1 v 2 Bliby

From a managers’ point of view, this result marked a disappointing end to the season. Two points from the last nine available suggests we will probably now finish sixth, rather than top three. Whilst the effort shown is not in question, and hasn’t been since I took over, the reality is the quality and availability of players has left us vulnerable against many of the sides we’ve faced.

As for this game, we battled well and created several chances. Yet I feel we rarely showed the belief or the fitness level needed to control this one.

Kieran Hawkins v Bliby 14 May 2009We fell behind in an uneventful first half and lost a player to injury, again, at the break. The deficit was doubled as we found ourselves exposed in key areas. Lee Milton, suffering from a cold and clearly too much football, dragged us back in to the game with a well taken strike. Other chances came and went without any real conviction.

Man of the match will go to Liam Holman (in action on Thursday below right), stepping in for Mackett. What he lacks in composure heLiam Holman 14 May 2009 more than makes up for in effort and desire. Other mentions to Valler, Perk and BJ who all fought well against an organised attacking side. Also to young Kieran (pictured above left), who worked very hard and put in his best display to date. With this season over, I now look to improve the current squad. I began this several weeks ago and will start to bring in the new faces over the coming weeks. I thank all involved for their efforts since February and look forward to the new challenge, which for me, starts now.

First come, first served for Lee’s 500 celebration dinner

Vice President John Kelly sends a messageJohn Kelly and Martin Dalby 2008

Goalkeeping hero from the past John Kelly has sent his personal congratulations to Lee Milton on achieving 500 senior appearances. Vice President Kelly, who will be at the awards night although he cannot make next Tuesday’s dinner, said today “Lee is a great example of loyalty; he has stuck with the club through both good and bad times. I send my sincere congratulations for a job well done”. The goalkeeping legend is pictured presenting the Tommy Stafford Memorial Cup to Youth Clubman Martyn Dalby at last year’s awards night.

Crusader can’t raise a side

Disappointment for youngsters as Crusader are the latest to be unable to raise a team

Tonight’s (Tuesday) Division Two Sunday League game is off with Ashford Crusader unable to raise a team for the evening fixture scheduled for the Swan Ground. This follows Kennington’s inability to field a side last Tuesday (at least they had the excuse of Man Utd-v-Arsenal!) Whilst it has little impact on the final league placings, it is very disappointing for the Green school kids who are making their mark. None more so than Reece Murrell who said this afternoon “I hate it when games are called off. Not only that, I had paid my match sub in advance!” The reserves will now join the firsts for a drink for their final Premier match on Thursday evening with Bliby the visitors. Everyone is welcome and kick off is at 6.30pm.
