Green snatch victory from the jaws of defeat

Howells and Wood net to gain three crucial points

Bromley Green 2 Rusthall 1

In all honesty, eighty minutes of this Bank Holiday Monday game at the Swan Ground was painful viewing. But when things are desperate all that matters is the result and, after looking (literally) down and out, the Green somehow found an extra spring in theirandy-wood-2009 step. Superbly constructed and well-taken goals at the end from Mark Howells and Andy Wood (right) erased all the angst and should see us stay up. That said Snodland can still pip us for fourth from bottom after they held Stansfeld to a 1-1 draw. A point at Coney Hall next Saturday will make absolutely certain of safety for Dave Smith’s charges. Full Green managers report to follow under ‘Match Reports’.

Congratulations to Hollands & Blair who confirmed their  title win with a hard-fought 2-1 defeat of wooden spoonists Sheerness East.

No details re the Reserves game at Platt United Reserves this afternoon other than the result provided by Steve Mailey which was apparently 5-0 to the home team. Otford Reserves are champions of the Eastern Reserves Division following a 5-1 success away to APM Mears Reserves. Sad news from the Lydd camp is that their second team has withdrawn from the league. Meanwhile a Steve Harris goal was of little consolation to mid-table Kennington in Division One as the locals lost their final match 3-1 to visiting Guru Nanak.

Sheber victory: if anyone has suitable photos from Sunday’s cup win, please ping them across to DH. Thanks.

Bank Holiday Monday 4.5.2009

4.5.2009 Home Rusthall (11.30) followed by bar-b-q . The reserves are at Platt United Reserves (2.45) so perhaps Phil and Trent will catch up with us when they get back. Note there are no committee meetings today…next meetings Monday 11 May at the ground 6.30pm.

Relegation Battle and Sheber Final means a Football Fest for Green Supporters

Saturday night update: Green lose 2-1 after taking lead and Cray are reduced to 10 men. But a Bank Holiday win should still be enough for safety. Charlie Clark sent off again as Reserves go down 1-0 at newly-crowned Reserves Division Eastern champions. Hollands & Blair have one hand on the Premier title as Fleet now need a miracle. Full reports on all the weekend action to follow…

Sunday night update: congratulations to the Sunday Reserves squad after a 4-1 defeat of Brewmaster Reserves won the Sheber Cup. Managers Report to follow…see Match Reports.

The action comes thick and fast over the next few days with the Saturday firsts now desperate for maximum points on Saturday against Cray Valley at the Swan Ground while the seconds travel to meet title challengers Otford United Reserves. Phil Wedge has problems with Lee Williams, Ashley Webster and Matt Wedge already out and Tommy Lockett suspended. On Sunday the focus turns to the Sheber Cup final at Reachfields where we face Brewmaster Reserves in what promises to be an entertaining affair. Monday Bank Holiday has an 11.30 kick off for the Saturday firsts fixture with Rusthall while the Reserves travel to Platt (2.45).  Monday’ s game is followed by a barbecue for club members and supporters and there is a combined Executive and Managers Meeting at 3pm. Tuesday sees the Sunday firsts go to Kennington and on Thursday the lads somehow have to find the energy to nip down the A28 to tackle Bethersden prior to a day’s rest before it all starts again next weekend. It’s never boring at the Green! Full match summaries and further news as it arrives…for starters here’s a flashback to 27 April 1997 when our Sunday Thirds won the Sheber at Folkestone’s ground (we had four successful Sunday sides in those days!) In a thrilling match that engrossed a big crowd, we beat Red Heathens 3-2 with goals from Paul Brasington, Haig Miles and Brian Hayter.

John Dixon and Brian Watkinson present the Sheber award to Green captain Haig Miles with Andrew Adamson, Brian Hayter and Paul Brasington about to collect their winners medals. Not a bad line-up for a third team was it!

Let’s have a repeat lads on Sunday at Reachfields. We’ve had a shit season as a club but we’ll be back!  Good luck to Phil and all the Green squad and by Sunday night let’s have some silverware in the cabinet.
