Big Reserves squad looking strong

Bromley Green Reserves 9 Man of Kent 1

IMG_0646[1]A stunning first minute strike from captain Matt Wedge immediately put plucky Man of Kent on the back foot on Wednesday night and an own goal plus a deft Dan Allen header gave a 3-0 interval scoreline. In all honesty the Green should have had a hatful in the first period with Ryan Fitzgerald, Lee Bloxham, Kenny Hallett and Richard Floyd all involved in some smart interchanges but somehow failing to hit the target. For long periods stand-in keeper Paul ‘Jammy’ Robinson was inactive during his first appearance in a Green shirt for many years. The pub side deservedly pulled one back following hesistancy in central defence but this lifted the home lads to move into another gear and as fitness told the goals began to flow. Martyn Dalby, who was impressive with his overlaps and link play with Reece Hagger and Steve Wilson, netted before another own goal made it 5-1. The influential Allen, again, Hagger and Shawn Dadd also hit the net as one-way traffic ensued towards the end. A touch of class from the old master rounded things off as Wilson arrowed his left footer hard and low, a fine example to the youngsters of how to finish. Good displays from Carl Rossiter, Dalby and Jamie Hurst (apart from those ghastly foul throws which hopefully will never be repeated Munch!) give great optimism for the future. And with Chris Cloke, Sean Tong, TJ, Dan Jackson and Darryl Hagger to come back in there are certainly some selection posers for the management! With everybody buzzing, it is difficult to choose a man of the match but watch out for Hallett who, despite missing a number of chances tonight, gets in the right places at the right time. When the rustiness has gone, he will surely prove a real handful for any defence. Thanks to Roger Corkhill who controlled the match well. Pictured are Steve Wilson and Richard Floyd who will be expected to guide the youngsters this season.

Midweek review…

Tommy Taylor of Cavaliers and Kevin Barrett 26.4.2009Wednesday’s visitors to the Swan Ground are ‘Chuds’ Man of Kent for another Sunday Reserves pre-season friendly (ko 6.45pm). With both keepers, Chris Cloke and Craig Smith, injured, another deputy will be needed while left-sider Daryll Hagger also misses out through work commitments. For the weekend, with the Saturday firsts entertaining Sevenoaks and Maidstone Tornadoes our visitors the next morning, there is hope of bringing the legendary Lee ‘Lurch’ Williams out of retirement to ease the keeping crisis. Positive news from the camp is that Kevin Barrett (pictured with Tommy Taylor of Cavaliers earlier this year) has registered both days and will be available when on leave from his service duties; while Ryan Holloway and Adam Mercer have also committed themselves full time to the Green. Tonight should see the many youngsters trying to make their mark in action with some already staking a claim to push towards first team football. This Saturday sees Ali’s reserve side having a rest and with a number of niggling injuries it may not be a bad thing. Joe Mifsud and Keith Shaba are two that are desperate to shake off injuries and make the big kick off. Full report on this evening’s game and more news as it arrives.

Monday night update…

Please note fixture changes and kick off time alterations have been made in the past few hours. Please click on Fixtures tab for the latest details. Don’t forget tomorrow night is Club Night and training while on Wednesday the Sunday Reserves welcome Man of Kent to the Swan Ground for the latest pre-season friendly. Kick off is at 6.45pm.  Again, those who ordered club ties, please bring the money on Tuesday. Thanks DH.

Sunday night bits…

A good weekend for the Green with just one defeat and that being the Sunday reserves at the hands of Premier Division side Bethersden (3-2). Two wins on Saturday, as reported below, and a very respectable 3-3 draw away to SIMLA gives plenty of room for optimism. For further details, please scroll down. The coming week is a busy one with an Executive and General Management meeting on Monday (7pm), Club Night and Training on Tuesday (7pm) and the latest in the round of pre-season friendlies with the Sunday seconds welcoming Man of Kent on Wednesday (kick off 6.45pm). Next weekend we have a full programme and previews will follow later in the week.

Report from Steve Mailey on Sunday’s game

Simla 3 Bromley Green 3

Sunday 16 August ‘09

We set off on our second pre season trip, this time to East Peckham, to face the much talked about SIMLA outfit. A few Ashford sides have come away from here licking wounds, so the size of the task was clear to all. The game began at quite a frantic pace, and never really eased up. It was competitive throughout and I doubt very much if we will face a side as well organised during the coming season as these were. My plan to build a versatile squad is showing reward already – as we were without Mackett, Mickelborough and two new signings are still yet to be available.

Our back line changed several times, although the starting combination impressed for the bulk of the game. Perk and BJ are very dominant and Hadlum put in a top display. Valler is responding to the competition for places too. That back line includes Craig – his first 45 in particular were near faultless. The middle included new lad Mercer, who will be a sound addition to the club as a whole, and a central pairing of R Smith and P Allan were powerful from start to finish. Ash up top worked hard against a top side and he will hurt many sides over the coming months.

Add in to the mix players such as L Milton and Poyner, both changing position when asked to, and Holloway, L Smith and Fitz getting to grips with the pace, and we suddenly look quite strong in most areas. That’s not to forget Robbie, who is not quite fit as yet with an ongoing ankle problem.

As for the game, well we improved hugely on last week, and I feel our first half display was full of so much promise, possibly the best we’ve played for quite some time. A set piece from L Milton found the net to put us ahead as we began to look the better outfit. Milts again showed his experience to pounce on some sloppy defending to make it 2 after the hosts had levelled from a poorly defended corner. Matt Hadlum arrived at the far post to give us a well deserved lead at the break.

The score became 2-3 soon after the restart as SIMLA finished off a fine football move with a quality finish. Unlike last week, we didn’t panic. We kept battling and showed some real team spirit. The multiple changes forced us to lose our balance, as expected, yet everyone accepted the need to use the squad available and we continued to compete. By his own admission, an error of judgement in goal allowed the hosts to level the score with a well taken lob.

Lee Milton May 2009In fairness, we were starting to die on our feet at the back, and the full time whistle came at a good time. Had this been a competitive match, without so many changes and with the missing ones present, I feel we would have won the game. The players represented themselves well as a unit and it will serve us well.

Man of the match is a tough one because of all the effort shown, but I will give it to Lee Milton (left). Two goals, good link up play between midfield and attack, and an impressive work rate from someone who was told to improve his fitness back in May!

Squad: C Smith / Valler / BJ / Perk / Hadlum / Holloway / R Smith / Allan / Mercer / Fitzgerald / L Smith / Poyner / L Milton / Webster / Greenfield.

Adam Mercer, in his first game for the Green, and the returning Chris Gillam both gained man of the match awards on Saturday at the Swan Ground. Here the managers reflect upon two entertaining tussles.

Craig Smith reports on the morning game…

Bromley Green 7-1 Woodchurch

Our pre-season continued with a 7-1 win at home to local side Woodchurch. Our thanks go to visitors as this fixture was arranged last minute and they provided a good test despite the scoreline.

The first 30 minutes were especially tight – despite controlling the game our composure was coming in spells and Woodchurch looked spritely on the break. Their big number 6 provided them with a strong outlet and he was very difficult to deal with – Mark Godfrey was also having a good game for them. When we got the ball down we looked good but a rather furtuitous goal saw us go in front. Robbie Greenfield struck from distance and it looped over the keeper with a deflection. 1 became 2 when a teasing Chris Howells cross was diverted into the goal – a good cross so we can give him the goal.

At half time the instruction was to get the ball down for longer periods and I feel we delivered this. Adam Mercer who was very impressive throughout found himself one on one and he buried it in the top corner.

Woodchurch to their credit rallied and started pushing on for goals – this however left them exposed – Mercer grabbing a second before Kenny Hallett nothced 2 – he deserved his goals as he was in and around the box all game. Tom Poyner was looking lively up front and Martyn Dalby and Jamie Hurst stepped up and contributed well.

Woodchurch deserved their goal and it came from a free kick. The number 10 saw Craig Smith dreaming off his line and curled one in the top corner. Milton scored with a good strike to make it 7 and complete the scoring.

Overall it was a useful workout and good to get the team together again. We welcomed back Ben Davis and he played well in a number of positions. Matt Hadlum and Ryan Smith also played well at the back. Mercer and Tom Head provided good outlets and it was clear that we are gelling as a team – our preparations continue!

Ali Mehmet reports on another reserves win

Bromley Green Res 3 – Nutfield FC 1

Following the success of the 1st team’s victory earlier in the day, the pressure was on the reserves to keep the momentum going with another victory.
Our opponents were Surrey Combination league outfit Nutfield FC. After two successive victories we felt, as a team, we needed a tougher test. To test our resolve and from a personal perspective, to observe how the players would react to an adverse result. Nutfield FC were everything we expected, a strong, tall, physical, busy and hard working side.
The boys in Green started well in a fairly evenly contested first half. The tackles were flying in with no quarter being given nor taken. Bromley Green had what seemed like a valid goal disallowed for offside when Matt Wedge ran onto a diagonal pass to put him clean through to beat the Nutfield keeper. Shortly after, Joe Mifsud fell foul of the dreaded linesman’s flag to have a daisy cutter chalked off. As the first half wore on the Green were being frustrated by the well drilled offside machine called the Nutfield defence. The machine was finally breached when Chris Gillam timed his run to perfection to coolly slot past the keeper. HT: BG 1 – Nutfield FC 0.  The second half got underway and Nutfield came out on top in the early exchanges, but gradually the Green worked their way back into the game. The artistry of Chris Gillam in midfield alongside the strong presence of Paul Barron finally took a grip and the wave of attacks began. Mark Hazell, as captain playing in an unfamiliar role out wide on the left continually encouraged and prompted his team mates. Ashley Webster and Joe Mifsud worked tirelessly for the cause and Joe got the reward his efforts deserved. Once again great team play and unselfish running allowed Joe to pick his spot and finish with ease. 5 goals in 3 games, not bad Joe!!
Substitutions were made with Mark Hazell moving into his more accustomed position of centre midfield at the expense of Paul Barron, Ryan Fitzgerald came on to play wide right and with virtually his first touch, rifled home from the edge of the area. (An inspired substitution some might say!!) Once the Green were 3-0 up the game as a contest was over. Sadly however, a defensive mix up between Shawn Dadd and Craig Smith allowed Nutfield a consolation with an accomplished finish from their striker.
In conclusion: We got what we wanted and got what we deserved. The Green always had that little bit extra when in possession and in the end that extra class and quality proved decisive.
Liam Smith and Shawn Dadd were a tower of strength in the middle of the back four. Reece was outstanding at right back and Sid was as reliable as ever at left back. The midfield was hard working and creative and the forwards were at their busy best.  My MoM again is a tough one, and I’m afraid, I am going to have to get used to sitting on the fence. Take a bow Joe Mifsud and Chris Gillam
I would just like to say a big thank you to Ian and Jill for the lovely buffet today. Your kindness was very much appreciated.

Weekend as it happens …

Sunday lunchtime update…

Creditable 3-3 draw at SIMLA for first team with Lee Milton (2) and Matt Hadlum on target

Reserves shine in patches during 3-2 defeat by visiting Bethersden – Dave O’Leary and Keith Hallett the Green scorers

Bromley Green 7 Woodchurch 1: Local leaguers Woodchurch put up a game fight before losing out to a much fitter Green mixture of youth, triallists and first-teamers at the Swan Ground on Saturday lunchtime. Lee Milton and debutant Adam Mercer were amongst the scorers. Report from Craig above. In the afternoon, Joe Mifsud was again on target in a 3-1 victory over Surrey side Nutfield. Report to follow from Ali above. Tomorrow Bethersden are the visitors to meet the Green seconds while the first team travel to SIMLA.  In addition to the shoulder injury to keeper Chris Cloke, Phil Wedge has Steve Wilson (work) and Matt Wedge (ankle) both absent while Steve Mailey is expected to include Mercer and Ryan Fitzgerald in his squad for the trip to Tonbridge. Ian Holloway became the first to beat the BG Bookies this season with his bet on West Ham to win at Wolves. All those of you who have asked for club ties, please bring the money tomorrow morning.

Poyner: “My heart is at the Green”

Tom PoynerVersatile player Tom Poyner (pictured left) has declared himself available full time at the club this season after doubts had surfaced in recent weeks about his commitment to both days. Talking exclusively tonight to the club’s website, Poyner stated “It is true I was considering having another go at the Kent League but my heart is here and I will be talking to the managers (Dave Smith and Ali Mehmet) as soon as possible. My pre-season preparation has not been ideal with the uncertainty but I am raring to go. Obviously I want to make the first team on both days but I am prepared to battle and earn that right”. Poyner, who is expected to be in Steve Mailey’s squad for Sunday’s testing visit to SIMLA, could be in action as early as tomorrow as there are two home games, with the firsts welcoming Woodchurch (11am) and the seconds tackling Surrey outfit Nutfield (3pm).

Dean Rolfe 2004Stalwart Dean Rolfe (pictured left) confirmed at this week’s club night that he is not planning a comeback; therefore his contribution to the Green cause in recent years will be acknowledged at the ground this Tuesday after training when he can take a final bow in front of his mates. Club Patron Dave Homewood said tonight: “It is pleasing that Dean can retire and look back with pride on his successes rather than continue to become frustrated as his legs find it harder to keep going. For most of his time here I was his manager and his occasional tantrums did push me to the limit; but, I can honestly say Deanno was not hard to work with and one of his strengths was that every time he pulled on the Green shirt he passionately believed we were going to win. Dean, whose record of achievement speaks for itself, has agreed to sponsor an award at the 80th anniversary awards night next year as a parting gift”. G Rolfe 14 May 2009Meanwhile we wish all the best to Dean’s brother, Glen (pictured left), who will not be playing for us this season. There has been no fall-out, with Glen conceding that work and family commitments have made it dificult for him recently to train and sustain the levels he has been used to over the years.

19 June 2009 Reece Hagger aYoung defender Reece Hagger (pictured left) is now fully recovered from last season’s devastating injury and has his sights set on getting into the first teams before too long. Reece, who is appearing in both reserve games this weekend, said tonight: “Last season I broke into the Sunday first team and was enjoying it before getting crocked. My aim is to be in both the Green first teams as soon as possible and then stay there”.

Skipper Glenn Mackett misses out both days this weekend through a wedding and work commitments. A final reminder that those wishing to take up the best odds in the world at the BG Bookies must do so with Dave Homewood before the Premiership kicks off on Saturday. Sunday players are reminded that there is a 9 0′clock meet for all players.

Looking towards the weekend…

Four appetising pre-season friendlies this coming weekend with again a sprinkling of new faces on display. The Saturday firsts could introduce Adam Mercer for their home match with local side Woodchurch and will not be under-rating Big Man’s charges. Kick off is at 11am. At 3pm, the reserves will be hoping that injury reports on both keeper Chris Cloke and striker Keith Shabba are favourable. Ali Mehmet will continue to experiment as he seeks to find the right format. On Sunday a tough away trip to SIMLA should prove ideal preparation for Steve Mailey’s squad which could include Neil Cheesman and Mark Hazell. Good to see Ryan Holloway back regularly. Phil Wedge has a chance to look at new options with Carl Rossiter and the former New Romney and Locomotive defender Dave O’Leary both likely to feature against highly rated Bethersden. With Cloke doubtful and Shawn Dadd injured, there could be a keeper role to play for either Kenny Hallett or Richard Floyd. More team news as it arrives.

Joint Executive and Management Meeting

MONDAY 12 October 6-7pm Executive and 7-8pm General Management Meeting

Firsts scrape in, seconds well beaten

Webster and Perk on target but defence leaks five

e369[1]The Green’s Sunday sides had mixed fortunes with the firsts winning 6-5 at Headcorn and the reserves going down 4-1 to well organised Ashford Dynamo at the Swan Ground. Letting in five was not on the agenda at Grigg Lane where a match of fluctuating fortune and mistakes by both defences led to an entertaining if somewhat mediocre pre-season affair. Midfielder Lee Milton, who did at least manage to nick the Green a late win, said “In all honesty we were poor and although Ash and Terry were amongst the goals, I really couldn’t pick out a man of the match. We have got to improve – letting in five says it all really. But we can’t blame individuals, we were just below par”. Ashley Webster (pictured with Manager Steve Mailey and Vice President Ian Holloway) took his tally for the weekend to five with a treble, veteran Terry Perk hit two and Milton rounded off the scoring. However, a win is a win and Phil Wedge no doubt would have settled for a similar scoreline as the seconds were mauled 4-1 by Ashford Dynamo at the Swan Ground with former Green Player of the Year Stuart Prior too hot to handle up front. Early doors were promising for the Green with debutant Kenny Hallett opening the scoring but with lots of changes and players in unfamiliar roles the home side lost their shape and Dynamo ended comfortable victors. Tommy Lockett, Hallett and TJ all pressed well in the second period but ex-Green keeper Andy Towell was rarely troubled as the game drifted away. A big thanks to Kevin Lee for refereeing our local games this weekend. A preview of next weekend’s fixtures will follow later in the week.  * To read Steve Mailey’s reflection on the Headcorn win please click on Match Reports tab.
