Local derby for Reserves on Saturday

Barron faces his old team

Paul Barron

The fixtures for the County League Reserves Division East have thrown up a mouthwatering local derby at the Swan Ground this coming Saturday with Ian Mace and his men welcoming our friends from the other side of town, Kennington Reserves. Mace and assistant Trent Thomas will be looking to continue their excellent run in the management hot seat and with Paul Barron, who makes no secret he wants first team football, pulling the strings with Dave Webster in midfield the Green begin as favourites. But we all know anything can happen in these games between neighbours and Dan Allen, Kenny Hallett and Ashley Webster will need to take any early chances to set us on the way to another maximum haul. The following Saturday the boys are at home again, this time to Borden Village Reserves, so there is an opportunity to reach Christmas in a really healthy league position.

Trevor Strand returns to the Green

Former Green midfielder Trevor Strand has returned to the club to work alongside Dave Smith and the Saturday firsts squad. Having left Sunday side Mersham last week due to work commitments, Trevor is quickly back into action and his experience will be a welcome addition to the management staff. Forty-nine-year-old Trevor, who previously managed the Green’s Under 16s with Derek Prior, was formerly attached to Kennington where he had considerable success building a strong reserve team. Patron Dave Homewood said tonight: “I have known Trevor for a very long time, he used to play for me, and we have the same attitude towards taking our football seriously. He is well aware that his new challenge is to help Dave get the first team back into the Premier”. ‘Strandy’ will be a spectator at training on Tuesday as he finds his feet but will be at the clubhouse to meet players afterwards. In time, Trevor wants to become involved with the other managers on the coaching side at the club.

Training Tuesday 1 December

Please note that training this Tuesday will be from 7pm on the grass at Stanhope and then 7.30-8.30pm on the 3G. Please bring £1 contribution towards costs. The Swan Ground clubhouse will be open from 8pm. DH

Only three games survive!

With just three games taking place this Sunday, Lydd probably wished their Kent Cup tie had also fallen foul of the weather as they crashed 8-0 to a strong Northfield Rangers side. Northfield, playing with the wind in the first half, had the game in the bag as they rattled in seven goals in the first half, another goal in the second period completed the tally. Division Three Cup holders Newchurch moved into the semi finals of this season’s competition after a comfortable 6-1 win over Brabourne; Lee Jackman leading the way with a hat trick and further goals from Gavin Prowse, Sam Allaway and Greg Hitchman with Nick Hickmott replying for Brabourne. In the Sheber Trophy Marsh Athletic beat local rivals Stour Valley 4-1, on target were Alan Sterling with a brace and one each from Tom Brudenel and Warren Smith. Chris Haynes netted a consolation for the Valley.

Mark Howells shows his frustration in today's cup loss at the Swan Ground

Green 0 Tonbridge Invicta 4: A poor early goal conceded, quickly followed by a contentious handball penalty decision, knocked the stuffing out of the home side in this Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield tie. Good luck to Invicta in the next round but one has to ask what is the point of having paid linesmen (sorry assistant referees or whatever the latest term is) if they do not play a part in decision making? What are they there for? Not a game to remember for many reasons but there were good performances from Micky Doyle, Mark Howells and some sublime second half moments of control by substitute Adam Mercer. A cold afternoon with the visitors looking well organised.

Tad Greenfield looks bemused by it all

For the Green, there is now a need to move on quickly and get their rhythm back for next week away to Lanes End (who also leaked four goals today). Plenty of postponements today including the Ulley Road fixture between Kennington and Oakwood. In the Ryman, Ashford lost 3-0 at Whitstable, Folkestone storm on with another win while the Rams put on a late, late show to snatch a 3-2 victory over Corinthian Casuals. Gary Mickelborough netted with a minute to go for an unlikely 2-2 draw but sensationally keeper Danny Twyman headed home a free kick in the 92nd minute to steal the points. With Faversham amazingly only drawing 0-0 at home to Sporting Bengal, Hythe must feel they are right back in the hunt for Kent League honours after their 4-0 win at Fisher. Ex Green players Pat Kingwell and Dave Cook were both on target. Meanwhile, the Lydders put up a good show before going down 2-1 away to MALGO. More details as they arrive.

Saturday morning news: the Sunday Reserves Division Two cup game at Shadoxhurst scheduled for the morning is OFF

Praying for dry weather

Late Friday night and all four Green games are still on! We can only hope the forecast is wrong and we enjoy some drying weather over the next two days. A reminder of the games: Saturday firsts home to Tonbridge Invicta in the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield [manager's preview below] and don’t forget the early kick off at 1.30pm; Saturday Reserves are at Platt United Reserves; the following day the firsts face Bliby in the Premier while the seconds go to Hornash Lane to meet Shadoxhurst in the Division Two Cup.

Jason Thomas: “I am ready to return”

Good  luck  J

Jason Thomas has contacted me tonight with the message that he is raring to go and would like all managers to know he is available for selection. Jason has been plagued with injuries during the past two seasons and we all hope that he is not risking things by coming back too soon. But sooner or later he has to take the plunge and get out there where it matters. “I have been training and building up the muscles and all seems ok. I am ready to give it a go now …” he said tonight. DH

Happy birthday to Steve Wilson on Friday, Joseph Mifsud on Saturday, and Sean Tong and Danny Valler on Monday

Midweek update

ALL MEMBERS PLEASE NOTE: Training for 1 December and 8 December will be at Pitch Side, Stanhope. On 15 December we will have another forum at the ground when all players, officials, managers and members can have their say and come up with any ideas for the future. Training at Pitch Side will then resume Tuesday 5 January 2010.

Congratulations to Steve and Julie Wilson on the birth of a baby daughter last night

Please note: Steve has moved back to Ashford but as yet does not have the Internet connected – so please send all messages by text to his mobile phone

Preview: Bromley Green v Tonbridge Invicta by Dave Smith

After last week’s much needed league win over Kennington, we now have 2 cup games to come, the first against Tonbridge Invicta from the premier league. Tonbridge sit just below half way in the league, but had an excellent 0-0 draw against the champions form last season Hollands and Blair last week, so I am sure this will be a real test for my team in our quest to make it to the quarter finals for the second season in a row.

Consistency has been our problem all season, we can excel one week and then follow that up with a lack lustre performance the next, once this problem is dealt with, we will really move on as a team, I think we are nearly there and everyone of the lads will be ready to test ourselves against premier opposition again.

The squad again shows little change, which is a real positive, as this adds stability and understanding. Both the Saturday squads are well represented at training and shows the people who not only want to play for the club, but also be involved in what the club is all about.

Squad: C.Smith, B.Davies, R.Smith, M.Doyle, M.Hadlum, A.Mercer, M.Howells, G.Mackett, L.Milton, J.Mifsud, L.Hayles, T.Head, R.Greenfield, D.Cornell

Team to meet by 12.30 latest, kick off 1.30 at home
