Sunday Kent Cup win: “we were awesome” says Mailey
Bromley Green 6 Hatcham 0
Despite being below strength with Lee Milton, Tom Head and in-form striker Joe Mifsud injured or unavailable, the first team registered a superb 6-0 victory over a useful Hatcham side at the Swan Ground on Sunday morning. Delighted manager Steve Mailey was complimentary to the visitors; “They were a very good side, in spite of the scoreline. But we were awesome and the back four faultless. I am naturally very pleased”. Full report to follow. The six different scorers for a rampant Green side were Danny Valler, Pat Law, Ryan Norman, Glenn Mackett, Ryan Fitzgerald and Kenny Hallett.
We can do it! Green up to fourth
Results went just about perfectly for the Green on Saturday with Premier going down 2-1 at New Romney and APM and the University boys drawing 1-1. There was a 2-0 victory for Staplehurst, who find themselves leading the pack, but Oakwood with respect have had it and are a pale shadow of their former squad. But the major boost of course was the 3-1 home success against Woodstock that takes us up to fourth. There are twelve games remaining for the Green and we are just six points off the pace. Promotion was the objective pre-season and it is now within touching distance after a patchy start to the campaign. Dave Smith deserves praise for staying faithful to lads that, by their own admission, have not always hit top form this season; but it is coming and, whilst there is certainly no room for complacency, there is a winning mentality beginning to permeate the club. All our teams now expect to win…good! The Executive has long argued that we need to return to the days of lads being dedicated to the club and not have divided loyalties. In the main this is now the case and it shows in the understanding that is developing by employing a settled playing staff. Promotion is now on the radar and what more incentive than the Premier next term, a replica 1930 kit and the chance to make our 80th year one to remember.
Some really exciting fare was on offer in the Inter Regional Challenge Cup where two games were decided by a penalty shoot-out. Fleet Leisure came through 5-3 on pens after a goalless affair with Cray while Lewisham ousted Canterbury City 3-2 on pens following a 1-1 scoreline. Ashford-based players Liam Whiting and Craig Southen, who both came on as subs, had chances to nick it for City but it is the Borough who move into the next phase. More misery for our local sides in Division Two East of the Kent County League with Tenterden going down 3-1 away to AFC Sevenoaks and Lydd Town disappointing in a 2-0 defeat at Platt United. Many of our readers visit this site for the first news of the Ryman South Division and much interest at present surrounds Folkestone Invicta who responded to the deduction of 10 points (as noted by Derek on Comments to Friday Night) by winning 1-0 away to Walton Casuals thanks to a late James Everitt strike. Neil Cugley’s side are in third place but they were the only Kent winners on the day. Warren Schulz is in a rich vein of scoring and he netted both for Ramsgate in a creditable 2-2 draw at Worthing while a Laurence Harvey header proved only a consolation for Ashford Town as they lost 2-1 at Homelands against Walton & Hersham. The local gate doubled but Steve Lovell’s team are in desperate trouble at the bottom. However, there is always hope, as fellow strugglers Whitstable Town were hammered 7-1 away to Leatherhead. Sittingbourne and Horsham YMCA shared the spoils from a highly forgettable goalless stalemate while Chatham went down at home, 2-0 to Dulwich Hamlet.

good result yesterday for us. and now we can push on. hopefully another big win against hatcham
Good luck today to Steve and the lads in the Kent Cup. I can’t be there this morning for personal reasons but will be kicking every ball. DH
Everyone was brilliant today! Great weekend for the Green!
It was also good to see some of the Bromley Green old guard out to support us for the Kent Cup: Eddie Fitz, Jamie Allan and Dave Andrews. Having played in a couple of Kent Cup semi-finals with them, lets hope this year we can go all the way.
