4.1.2009 Pitches frozen

Sunday’s games, away to Brewmaster for the firsts and home to Galacticos for the reserves, were both called off due to frozen, dangerous playing surfaces. Next Sunday the firsts welcome Kennington to the Swan Ground for a Premier Cup tie while the reserves travel to table-topping Appledore in Division Two.

Firsts have wasted trip but Green Reserves notch great win

An annoying Saturday afternoon for the firsts who travelled to Hollands & Blair only for the pitch to be clearly unplayable and postponed by the ref without a ball being kicked. Dave Smith had a strong squad together including new striker Andy Wood. Next Saturday the side is in cup action with New Romney the visitors.

On a much more positive note, at the Swan Ground, the Green seconds kept their noses in front at the top of the Reserves Division with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over previously unbeaten Bearsted Reserves. Jimmy Pickard and Tom Poyner set up Matt Wedge to hit into an empty net to give us a slender lead after a goalless first half in which veteran keeper Lee Williams made two outstanding stops. An evenly fought affair was settled towards the end when Poyner lashed home from the edge of the box. A terrific effort by all the lads who next week travel to fellow title aspirants Otford Reserves. Green: L Williams; S Beale, L Smith, S Dadd, A Bond, L Holman, M Wedge, J Pickard, T Poyner, T Lockett, L Milton. Subs: J Major, D Robson, M Batch

Frozen pitches restricted the action today but there were defeats for both Marsh outfits with Romney losing 2-0 at Otford and Lydd Town going down 3-1 away to APM Mears. In the Reserves Division, where just 4pts separate the leading 7 sides, Kennington Reserves beat APM Mears Reserves 2-1, Lydd Reserves slumped 3-1 at home to Borden Village Reserves and Romney’ second string lost 3-2 at Oakwood.

“I find this so-called ‘period of transition’ a mere metaphor Dave Homewood for mediocrity and the sooner we are back where we belong

talks exclusively to on Saturdays and Sundays the better”

The Green Lane

Another twelve months have sped past and I once again have the pleasure as Patron of Bromley Green FC to wish all our friends near and far a happy, peaceful Christmas and a New Year that sees your hopes fulfilled.

It has not been an easy year, either on or off the field of play, with a sizeable number of long-standing Green players and indeed managers deciding to leave the club for various reasons. We can only thank them for past services and wish them all well in their new pastures. My job, our job, is to steady the ship and ensure that the Green flag is flying high. Historically our club has met adversity head-on and emerged triumphant and, just as in the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s when things periodically went pear-shaped, we will bounce back even stronger than ever. On the field, all of our teams play at a decent level leaving few openings for experimentation with our marvellous group of promising youngsters. However, whilst I accept we are rebuilding, I view the term ‘period of transition’ as something of a metaphor for accepting mediocrity and the sooner we are back where we belong on Saturdays and Sundays the better.

The year 2008 has been, and indeed still is, difficult for some very close to the heart of the club and my thoughts are with you during what I know are personal ordeals and heartbreaks that push human coping mechanisms to their extremes. Together we must offer support whenever the call comes and cherish the great spirit we have within our organisation. Together we will make 2009 a year to remember for all the right reasons. My thanks to all fellow officers, supporters, helpers, managers, sponsors and of course the players for their endeavours during the past year.

To all Green people, and football lovers in general, wherever you are, have an enjoyable Christmas and a successful 2009.

[Honorary Patron Bromley Green Football Club]

Dave Smith reflects on Saturday’s game and the season so far

Another disappointing result losing to 1-0 to a well organised Hollands and Blair team. The first half was mainly controlled by the visitors, but stubborn defending and poor finishing saw us go in level. The second half saw the game open up more and I felt we competed well but we never really created enough. On the hour from a half cleared corner the visitors took the lead, with a good finish from the edge of the box. We did rally and tried hard for the equaliser, our best chance falling to Chris Holmes whose cross shot just skimmed the post. For all our efforts we could not level the game and ended up losing 1-0. In all honesty a fair result in a game where we failed to get going; we can and have played a lot better than this, perhaps the 3 week lay off had affected our momentum. Team: C.Smith, L.Marshall, B.Davies. M.Hadlum. K.Seni. M.Howells. C.Howells, H.Slade. C.Norman. D.Cornell. C.Holmes. Subs: L.Holman (K.Seni) L.Smith (H.Slade) MOM B.Davies gave a solid display and is becoming a regular solid performer.

Review

We have now reached the half way point of 14 league games and the end of 2008. Overall I am pleased with the way the side is coming together, thinking back to August and the mass exodus of so many Green regulars from previous seasons I did wonder how the season would pan out. My first 5 months in charge of the team has been both enjoyable and frustrating, but I can assure everyone involved with the club that I am 100% committed to making the Saturday 1st team successful and helping the club in any way for us all to get back to the glory days that were enjoyed in years past. My squad is now around 18 players with 11 of these still 19 or under; the spirit between the lads is improving all the time. Training is going well now with good numbers and a pleasing thing for me is that I easily get my squad together for each match as the boys are all committed to the team. I know our league position is disappointing and 11 points from 14 games with only 3 wins is not good, but I do believe given the time and if we stick together, we can become a force in the premier league. We all know the club is in the process of rebuilding all its sides and in my opinion the group of lads I have are some of the best talent in Ashford and I am privileged to be working with them. We have 14 league games to go and we will need at least the same return that we have now to stay clear of the relegation zone. I am confident we will do this. We are also still in 3 cups, 2 at the last 16 stage and 1 quarter final to look forward to and I would love to see us get to a final as it would be a good reward for the effort the boys have put in this season so far. Finally I would just like to say a Happy Christmas to all players, supporters, and committee members at the club and lets hope 2009 brings the Green the success we all strive for.

Sunday update…

Sunday was a bad day for the Green with the firsts going out of the Bodkin Cup by way of a 5-3 defeat at Bliby and the seconds crashing 4-1 at home to title aspirants Appledore. At Sandyhurst Lane, it was a great spectacle for the neutrals but for the Green the continual change of personnel on match days is proving costly. With work commitments, holidays,  and one key player not showing up, it was always going to be a difficult tie and the Green found themselves 3-0 behind. In truth but for some great saves by Craig Smith it could have been worse. However, the reshuffled side deserves praise for a tremendous fightback in a contest that at one stage deemed destined for extra time. There were some real positives as the rebuilding continues with newcomers Michael Thomas, Glen Rolfe and Karl Seni each performing well. The boys now rest until 4 January when another stiff test awaits as we go to Brewmaster in the Ashford Charity. To get back to winning ways, we must have the stability that breeds confidence and gives shape to our play. Good luck to Bliby in the next round. A Charlie Clark goal at the Swan Ground is little consolation as Appledore cruised home. Bright spot for Phil Wedge is young Joe Barton who came off the bench to impress. No game for the reserves until 4 January either.

Saturday night briefly…

* Green firsts go down 1-0 at home to Hollands & Blair

* Green seconds goalless at champions University of Kent Reserves

* New Romney win the Marsh derby, beating Lydd 3-1

* Former Green striker Steve Harris nets a hat trick as Kennington win 4-3 at Otford

* In the Reserves Division: Lydd 1 NR 3 and Kennington 0 Larkfield 3

* Karl Seni is due to make his first Sunday appearance of the season at Bliby in the morning but Glenn Mackett, Liam Holman, Joe Hopkins, Bryn Williams, Jason Thomas and Matt Munday are all non-starters for various reasons

Dave

Here is our squad for the web site. As rightly stated below a huge fixture with Hollands and Blair looms on Saturday. With the weather set fair we look forward to the match. We need 3 points to push us away from the bottom three and take the pressure off. Our last game was against the same opponents away and despite a good performance we were beaten 3-1; but this does seem to be the norm for us, giving all teams a good game, coming away with credit, but no points. We have a young side, who need to develop together, but this league is very unforgiving; but I am convinced if we continue to progress the way we are, we will become a major force in the county league. Squad: C.Smith, B.Davies, M.Davies. M.Hadlum. L.Marshall. K.Seni. C.Howells. M.Howells, C.Norman. D.Cornell. C.Holmes. L.Holman. L.Smith. S.Carey. Suspended R.Smith. R.Norman. Not available G.Mackett.

“It may be the holiday period but this is a huge weekend for our famous old club”

If ever there was a weekend when we needed just that little bit of the rub of the green, it is the final Saturday and Sunday matches of what has been a turbulent 2008. Human nature has meant that many [envious] pundits across the county have waited for us to fall but that has never been on my radar and I am genuinely proud of the five sides that represent us. The managers know they have total support from the Executive and I can only see the good times returning in the very near future. But as we all know, we are only as good as our last game and the Saturday firsts need no reminding that playing good football alone does not guarantee dividends. That is why I hope as many as possible can be at the game on Saturday against high-riding Hollands & Blair to urge the boys to a victory that will make Christmas that much happier. In Dan Cornell, Chris Holmes and Ryan Norman, we have a potent attacking force that on its day can rip sides apart and team chief Dave Smith will be desperate for the lads to deliver on what has become a big occasion. Our chances will not be helped with skipper Glenn Mackett unavailable and Smith (Ryan) and Norman (Ryan) missing through suspension.

Chris Holmes carries the Green’s hopes in crucial fixture

Alfied Pickard and lads sit proudly at the top of the table but along with assistant manager Trent Thomas, they will not take University of Kent Reserves lightly. The students are the current champions and we have had some wonderful games with them over many years. Quite frankly, with the league so tight again this season, all we are concerned with is taking maximum points.

Turning to Sunday morning, we face a testing Bodkin Cup tie at Bliby but if we are in the mood, we can beat them again. Having not played much football over the past two months, the lads will probably be rusty but new faces will again add interest as we continue the rapid rebuild. The squad as we go to publish is: Craig Smith; Michael Thomas, Dean Rolfe, John Lockett, Bryn Williams, Matt Hadlum, Liam Holman, Danny Valler, Glen Rolfe, Gary Mickelborough, Glenn Mackett, Ben Henaghan, Lee Milton, Kevin Barrett, Robbie Greenfield, Matthew Munday, Terry Perk, Tom Poyner. Definitely out are broken ankle victim Joe Hopkins and wide man Jason Thomas who is to be rested until the New Year as he awaits diagnosis of a recurring injury.

Jason Thomas out until the New Year

At the Swan Ground, Phil Wedge has pledged to continue with the policy of building with youth and has promised at least one new signing [in addition to Green youngsters Joe Barton and Reece Murrell]  will be in the squad to tackle leaders Appledore in what should be a game full of entertaining football. The seconds will look to Lee Bloxham to keep up his knack of snatching vital goals. The Under 16s have no game until 18 January next year. Although it is the holiday period, this is a huge weekend for our famous old club and I hope as many of us as possible can be there to cheer the lads on. A quick reminder to all friends of the club that everybody is welcome for a seasonal get-together/drink on Saturday 27 December, meeting at The Phoenix at 1pm. Good luck to all the Green teams this weekend.

SATURDAY NIGHT ROUND-UP

Little action for our local sides with the rain again ruining fixtures right across the county. There were no County League Premier games and the only match in the Reserves Division One East section saw last year’s runners-up  New Romney Reserves keep up their challenge with an easy 6-0 defeat of visiting Larkfield Reserves. Looking forward to next week, the Green have a difficult hurdle to overcome in the shape of Hollands & Blair while the Saturday Reserves travel to reigning champions University of Kent Reserves. Sunday sees us once again at Sandyhurst Lane to meet Bliby in the Bodkin Cup with the seconds entertaining in-form title aspirants Appledore at the Swan Ground. The Under 16s have a long break now until the 18 January when we go to Thanet Colts. Let’s hope for a drying week!

Friday night update (12.12.2008)

Sheerness call Saturday’s game off

Saturday’s crucial Kent County League fixture on the Isle of Sheppey has been called off by Sheerness. This is a big dampener as the Green were confident of bringing back maximum points. Patron Dave Homewood said “This is typical of our season. I’ve no doubt the lads would have done the business tomorrow, gained the three points and opened some daylight up between us and the bottom cluster. Now, who knows, we could well have to travel up there at some incovenient time when they have improved their form. I don’t know why the game is off but it is most disappointing for Dave Smith and all concerned”.

The weekend ahead

More crucial games for all our teams this weekend with both Saturday sides facing bottom of the table opponents: away to Sheerness East and home to APM Mears Reserves. The Sunday firsts are already without Bryn Williams, Terry Perk, Jason Thomas and captain Glenn Mackett for the short trip to Ashford Cavaliers but Dave Homewood will again be calling on Kevin Barrett to return and provide that something extra that he always brings to the side. The rebuilding continues with Glen Rolfe, Michael Thomas and Liam Holman all in a revamped squad as the Green experiment with their line-up. At the Swan Ground, the Sunday Reserves welcome Churchills. Both games kick off at 10.30am. Sunday afternoon sees the big top of the table clash with the Green entertaining Betteshanger (2pm).

Sunday tea-time headlines

Bloxham debut double earns fighting cup win

Reece Murrell hat trick sinks local rivals

Only two games due to waterlogged pitches but nevertheless two superb results for the Green at the weekend with Phil Wedge’s charges digging deep to win a marvellous cup tie at Egerton and the Under 16s keeping up the pressure at the top with a 4-1 beating of Ashford Borough Colts.

Spirited Green battle their way into semis

At Rock Hill on a spongy surface both sides deserve praise for a game full of enterprising football and, although the Green nicked the semi final spot, in all honesty Egerton for long spells looked the better side. As it was, praise must go to all the lads for battling for the whole ninety minutes and somehow holding on to progress by virtue of a 3-2 win. Lee Bloxham returned to the club and on his debut snatched two opportunist goals with the other provided by the home keeper who punched an awkward ball into his own net. Five-star performances by Chris Burden and keeper Shawn Dadd, plus another solid outing for Reece Hagger saw the Green through to a tasty semi final with league leaders Appledore.

Turkey stuffs local rivals

Reece Murrell did his chances of breaking into the Saturday Reserves in the New Year no harm at all with a well-taken hat trick at The Ridge as the Under 16s proved too good for local rivals Ashford Borough Colts. Murrell is keen to feature in the senior set up as soon as he is 16 and has already had talks with co-manager Trent Thomas. Also on target in a 4-1 victory was defender John ‘Turkey’ Holt. Next week we entertain Betteshanger in another vital league match. Full report of today’s game to follow on Youth Football tab.

Saturday night snippets

With the Green completely out of action due to waterlogged pitches, attention turns briefly to our neighbouring sides on County League duty this afternoon. The news is not particularly good from the Kennington camp: the first team had only a Matt Coglan goal to show for their efforts in 5-1 defeat to New Romney down The Avenue while their seconds lacked any real penetration in a 4-0 reversal to the Blues Reserves. Perhaps a minor upset was in the Reserve Division East with the University boys losing 2-1 away to Platt Reserves. Lydd continue to struggle following a 9-1 home hammering by Canterbury City in the Les Leckie Cup. Next Saturday is a big day for both Green sides as the firsts travel to bottom side Sheerness East looking to gain the maximum points that will give some more daylight between themselves and the foot of the table while Alfie’s boys entertain another bottom side, APM Mears Reserves. Incredibly, the Reserve Division One East has at least eight teams still in with a real shout of the title. But for the Green who head the pack there will be no complacency and again three points is the order of the day. Team news later in the week.

6.12.08 Saturday morning update…

Rain ruins prospect of great entertainment

The weather has again badly decimated our fixtures this weekend with the overnight rain proving the final straw for the Swan Ground playing surfaces. Pitches duty man Phil Wedge and Saturday chief Dave Smith left it until Saturday morning but there really was no chance and reluctantly they called off all home matches. At the time of going online, two games survive: the seconds in the cup at Egerton on Sunday (10.30am) and in the afternoon the Under 16s at The Ridge in the league against Ashford Borough Colts (2pm). Updates here as soon as we receive any news. Many of the lads are bitterly disappointed at the postponement of two mouthwatering clashes against Lewisham and Kennington respectively that promised 5-star entertainment. For the Saturday firsts it presented a chance to gain the three points that will make the table look so much healthier while the Sunday firsts were expected to include four new signings in their squad. But let’s hope for a drying few days and have everybody back in action next weekend. We rarely all get together these days as a club, and I know money is tight, but on 27 December your Executive hopes you can all meet for a drink or two…starting at The Phoenix at 1pm. One bad piece of news is that Sunday first midfielder Joe Hopkins, who has yet to feature this season, has broken an ankle whilst playing in a 5-a-side competition. We all wish him a speedy recovery. As I write, news has filtered through that the Saturday Reserves game at Borden has also fallen victim to a waterlogged pitch. For most of you, all I can say is enjoy your weekend off! Dave Homewood

Plenty of positives in defeat at Hollands & Blair

Dave Smith reports…

Another 3-1 defeat, played on a energy sapping heavy pitch, but a really good performance, which even saw the excellent referee stating that he did not know how we never came away with at least a point.
We had the worst start as we struggled to get a grip of the pitch and after 10 mins we were 2-0 down, I feared we could take a real hammering, but the lads dug in and played some excellent football, with Chris Howells and Ryan Smith taking a grip of the midfield and wingers Mark Howells and Ryan Norman, supplying the chances for our hard working forwards Chris Holmes and Craig Norman. We came close on several occasions before in the 30th minute Chris Holmes scored with a delicate lob. We continued to push on hitting the bar and post, but reached half time 2-1 down.

The second half started in a similar fashion, with us pushing on hard searching for the equaliser, Holmes, Howells and Norman all came close but we could not level the game and in the 85th minute, we conceded a third as we tired purely from the effort we had put in on such a heavy pitch.

Overall it was a good team performance, one of the best of the season and if we had taken our chances we would have won and although our league position looks bleak, we, in my opinion are improving as a team and as a squad. Training attendance is improving and this is adding a good spirit and building a better understanding between the lads.

Next week we are at home to Lewisham, always a lively encounter and we will be going all out for a win and if we can build on Saturday’s performance I am sure we will get something out of the game.

Cup win for Green but Dave Smith praises Kennington’s commitment

A thrilling encounter in Arctic conditions, saw us progress to the next round of the intermediate shield and a clash with New Romney. The 6-4 victory after extra time in my view was well deserved, but I would give Kennington tremendous credit for there commitment and effort. We started well, with a Strong wind behind us and took the lead in the 20th min, when Craig Norman finished well against his old club, but some slack defending from a long free kick saw a Kennington defender head home to level matters. We now upped the tempo and Chris Howells restored our lead with a brilliant 30 yard free kick,2 soon became 3 when Dan Cornell, turned and shot leaving the Kennington keeper with no chance. A 3-1 half time lead looked comfortable, but with the wind now against us we new it would be difficult.Kennington got the best possible start, when a long free kick was mis-judged by keeper Craig Smith, making the score 3-2, then in the 60th min a debatable offside decision, saw former Green forward Steve Harris level the scores. The game was now in the balance and Kennington looked to have won it in the 85min,when Harris again scored with a header, we were rocked, but a superb solo run and cracking strike from Mark Howells in the 89th min saw us level and take the game into extra time. The strong wind had now died, which helped us, we got the ball down and made Kennington work hard, but we were unable to break through in the first period of extra time. We made 2 changes at the start of the second half, with Karl Seni and Liam Smith coming on and this was to prove crucial, as from a superb 30 yard pass from Smith, saw Seni, beat his fullback and deliver a great cross for Chris Holmes to put us back in the lead, the same 2 players combined again and when the keeper could only parry, Dan Cornell scored our sixth, to finish the game.In my view this was a great win and showed the spirit which is building amongst our young squad, our fitness told as training has now picked up with good attendance. Next week we are back in league action, when we visit high-flying Hollands and Blair, but as usual we will go there ready to give our best and play good football and will be looking for a third straight win.

Team C.Smith, L.Milton, M.Hadlum, L.Marshall, M.Howells, C.Howells, R.Smith, R.Norman,C,Holmes, D.Cornell,C.Norman. Subs B.Davies (C.Norman), L.Smith (M.Hadlum). K.Seni (R.Norman)

Sunday firsts again forced to make changes

Yet again the Green go into a tough Sunday fixture with no consistency of form or settled team plans with players unavailable for a variety of reasons. Brilliant one week, pitiful the next, this is proving a strange season. Latest player to drop out on Saturday night is Jason Thomas who joins other absentees Kevin Barrett (work), Glenn Mackett (ban), Bryn Williams (Spurs) and Tom Poyner (injured) for tomorrow’s game at The Ridge against leaders Market. With new signing Glen Rolfe transferring from Aldington and Joe Hopkins making his first appearance of the campaign, the Green are expected to go with the following squad and well, if the first part of the season is anything to go by, anything can happen!

Craig Smith; Danny Valler, Matt Hadlum, Dean Rolfe, John Lockett, Michael Thomas, Lee Milton, Ben Henaghan, Terry Perk, Gary Mickelborough, Glen Rolfe, Robbie Greenfield, Joe Hopkins.

Those already at The Ridge might wish to stay and support the Under 16s who bid to make the last four of the League Cup when facing Ashford Borough. A tight and tense game is expected in what is arguably our biggest test of ability and application to date.

Meanwhile at home, Ashley Webster makes his last appearance for the Reserves for a while as he goes on his travels abroad.

Firsts win another cup battle but need extra time

Bromley Green 6 Kennington 4 (aet)

On a bitterly cold Saturday afternoon, the firsts recorded a second successive cup win, following up last week’s Inter Regional victory at Otford with a nailbiting triumph over local side Kennington in the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield. The Division One outfit put up a tremendous show but in the end the Premier lads prevailed. Full report from team manager Dave Smith to follow. Next week the lads return to league action when they are away to Hollands & Blair.

The Green seconds stay top of the Reserve Division East despite having no fixture and next week should be capable of seeing off bottom side Platt at the Swan Ground. Local teams in this division, Kennington and Lydd, both lost. Kennington went down to a solitary Kent University strike at Ulley Road while Lydd also suffered a home reversal at the hands of well-placed Staplehurst (5-0).

Alfie “I am enjoying the challenge”

Sitting at the top of the table, Saturday Reserves boss Alfie Pickard spoke exclusively to The Green Lane following the comfortable 5-3 victory at Larkfield on Saturday:

“We are doing well and there is a growing confidence in the team. We were far more dominant than the score suggests so it is a shame we have no game this week. Trent Thomas is also giving me excellent advice and support and I am enjoying the challenge, I am also confident the lads will keep giving 100% as will myself”.

At Larkfield a 30-yarder from Jason Thomas was the highlight with the tally completed by Ashley Webster 2, Tommy Lockett, Tom Poyner and a freak own goal. [Editor: I make that 6 Alfie...confirm when you get chance please. Thanks Dave]

Dave Smith on the cup win at Otford…next week home to Kennington in the Intermediate Shield

Dave

Here is the match report for Saturday

A comfortable 2-1 win but not as comprehensive as it should have been. On a difficult surface we started well with crisp passing and good movement and took the lead in the 20th min when Ryan Norman finished well after a slick 5 move. We doubled our lead in the 30th min when Craig Norman, created and finished his own chance. We should have now controlled the game, but sloppy defending just before the break allowed Otford to reduce the arrears. The second half saw us control the possesion and were unlucky on several occasions not to increase our lead, Otford to there credit contrinued to work hard, but lacked a real cutting edge to level the scores and we rang out 2-1 winners. Next week we have Kennington in the Intermediate shield at home, which promises to be a interesting affair as they are coming into form now and derby games always carry that extra edge. Team:C.Smith,L.Smith,M.Hadlum.L.Milton.L.Marshall.R.Smith.C.Howells.M.Howells,

Latest Sunday results…

Green 1 (Thomas) Troggs 2

Never having a settled side is costing the boys dearly and again, although having plenty of the play, the Green lacked any cutting edge. Jason Thomas returned to first team action and gave new options while side-lined club skipper Glenn Mackett was superb as the referee. But inevitably there will be changes for next Sunday’s trip to old friends Market.

Eagles 0 Green Reserves 3 (Webster 1, Floyd 2)

Ashley Webster plays his last game this coming Sunday before another long holiday and his goalscoring prowess will be missed by the high-flying Reserves. Another long-serving player, Richard ‘Kasper’ Floyd, netted a brace in this solid team performance.

Dave Smith reflects on the defeat at Fleet

Due to work commitments I was unable to make the game on Saturday, which ended in a heavy 8-1 defeat. According to various reports, I have had we were in the game at 2-1 at half time after Dan Cornell scored with a good header, but conceded 6 set piece goals in the second half to leave us well beaten. A disappointing result that leaves us just above the relegation positions.
As usual we now have to move on and we now have a break from the league, with 2 cup games, the first of which is away to Otford, followed by a derby game against Kennington. This will give me a chance to assess where we are are, with our progression and whether I need to look to add more players to the squad, we also now lose our skipper Glenn Mackett for 5 weeks, due to suspension. Certain players have, let their high standards of performance and commitment drop over the last few weeks and this will also be addressed in the next couple of weeks, so when we return to the league action, we will be ready to give 100%, to improving our league position.

Last night, Patron Dave Homewood spoke on behalf of the Executive: “What a fantastic tribute to everybody at the club that, despite having a host of players leave us for pastures new, Bromley Green can still provide such quality for the league rep side. Obviously from a tender age Macca has had to assume the mantle of former icons Tommy Stafford and Gary Holloway but Craig, Matt and Ryan have already shown us with their commitment and attitude that they are Bromley Green through and through. We are all very proud of them”. Scroll down for Dave Smith’s comments.

Saturday first team manager’s report on the Bearsted game

Another close fought game in very wet and windy conditions saw us lose 3-1 to a well-organised Bearsted side, with some appalling refereeing thrown in. We started with the wind and rain at our backs, but in the first minute the referee awarded a penalty against us when Ryan Smith’s momentum from the conditions carried him into the Bearsted forward, a very harsh verdict,1-0 soon became 2 when slack defending allowed the Bearsted winger to finish well. We now decided to play and were rewarded when Craig Norman touched home Ryan Smith’s free kick. 2-1 down at half time, I told the lads the need to play football on the floor as we were now to be playing against the elemements, the response I got was very good and we dominated the game and were unlucky on several occasions, not aided by some very odd decisions by the referee, with time running out I changed the formation to 4,3,3 but this backfired as Bearsted caught us on the break to make it 3-1. With ten to go the game was over, but as the referee was keen to confirm he was not up to refereeing at this level, he sent Ryan Norman off for a strong challenge borne out of his frustration of being kicked all day. There were probably 8 bookings to go with this in a game without a really bad challenge. All in all a frustrating day, we again played well, but this league is tough, every week we play well organised sides and most at the moment just have the edge and experience we lack at times. We visit table-topping Fleet next week, but we will go there with confidence, as we are capable of giving every team in this league a good game and perhaps we may get some luck going our way for a change, as at the moment it feels everything goes against us.

Green proud of its rep side players

At last nights representative match between Kent and Essex all four Green lads played their part in an entertaining game, which ended 1-1. Ryan Smith and Matt Hadlum played as part of a back three for the whole game and both performed well, with solid defending and good distribution. Glenn Mackett was introduced in the 55th minute with Kent 1-0 down and helped in getting us back on level terms. Craig Smith was less fortunate and only had 20 minutes, but in that time his handling and distribution were excellent and showed that he should be part of a good Kent squad. The next game is against Sussex on 12 November and all four players are in the squad again, which is a great credit to themselves. Dave Smith was speaking exclusively to The Green Lane.

* Green Under 16s now at home on Sunday

* Manager situation must be resolved by Monday night

* Sunday firsts looking to boost squad to add cover

_____________________________________________

> Our youth team fixture against Easterners this coming Sunday has been switched to the Swan Ground with the Green looking to extend their long unbeaten run. Let’s hope for another big crowd to cheer the boys on.

> There is much speculation about the Saturday Reserve team manager’s post  with Steve Wilson in charge for the last time this weekend away to Platts Heath United Reserves. A decision on the side’s future will have to be made at Monday night’s Executive and Managers meetings with the club still hopeful a suitable candidate will step forward and take up the challenge.

> The Sunday firsts have built up a great squad spirit but Dave Homewood is adding at least one, possibly two, new signings as injuries, work and suspensions start to bite in the long winter months.  Talking to The Green Lane he said this morning: “We have been unable to field a settled side and it is clearly going to be one of those seasons. But what is so pleasing is the attitude of the lads…for instance on Sunday at Bliby we had Marty Valle, John Brewster, Bryn Williams and Gary Mickelborough on the bench and their willingness to put the team first was so pleasing. Their turn will come but with suspensions around the corner and injuries always likely to upset things, we still need to add a couple of quality players to the squad. I expect to complete the transfer of a midfielder in the next few days and am also confident of a new striker coming over. Add to this the fact that Kevin Barrett is going to be available for large chunks of the season and Jason Reynolds is still to be with us on a regular basis and the reasons for optimism are obvious.” The lads are looking forward to Sunday’s trip to High Halden to meet an in-form Brewmaster side that always tries to play attacking football and if the 5-5 draw earlier in the season is anything to go by, we are in for another dose of thrilling entertainment.

Dave Smith laments silly errors as we go down to Phoenix

Saturday saw us come away from Phoenix with another reasonable performance but no points, our problem again being our inexperience costing us goals at vital times. We play good football and compete and then throw the game away in a second, with an error or simple mistake. Phoenix came at us hard and fast from the first whistle and took the lead in the 10th min when there left winger was left with to much space and slotted home. We responded well and in the 25th min were level when good harrying work from Ryan Norman, left Dan Cornell to finish well. It stayed like this until half time. Again Phoenix came at us hard, but we were doing well to contain them, until we failed to defend a corner properly and there striker found himself unmarked and fired home, 2-1.We again came back well and the impressive Craig Norman burst into the box to level matters only for the linesman to adjudge he had handled, a decision no one expected and one i found hard to accept, 2-1 then became 3-1 when a mix up between Craig Smith and Chris Howells left a phoenix player to tap home. This was basically the game over, apart form the referee to make two glaring errors, firstly not to send a Phoenix player off for trying to break Ryan Normans jaw and then to send the unlucky Ryan Smith off for a more than debatable last man challenge when himself and the Phoenix forward just got their legs tangled and both players ended up in a heap, on this the Phoenix management have stated they will back us with an appeal. Onto next week now, with Bearsted our visitors, already a must win game now to get us back to the mid table pack, we should be at full strength and hopefully get plenty of support to help us out. A big thanks to all that came Saturday, it is much appreciated by myself and the lads and as a group we are building a good spirit, not just on the pitch but off it as well. Team Craig Smith, Lee Milton, Ryan Smith, Ben Davies (Matt Hadlum), Ryan Norman, Karl Seni, Glen Mackett, Mark Howells (Chris Howells), Mark Wallis, Dan Cornell (Chris Holmes), Craig Norman. Great team spirit earns Green vital win

Poyner double and one from Barrett sinks Bliby

Bliby 1 Bromley Green 3

A terrific battling performance full of determination and pride saw off title hopefuls Bliby at Sandyhurst Lane on Sunday. Top marks to all the squad and the spirit now in the camp suggests we can still have a real crack at honours again this season even though it is one of rebuilding and transition. Bliby, with Hythe Town star Pat Kingwell holding their back line together, played their part in a match that had plenty of good football and must have been good viewing for the neutrals. A hard, low drive from Tom Poyner put the Green ahead early on and only two incredible saves by the home keeper kept out long range pile drivers from inspirational midfielder Ben Henaghan and the ever-dangerous Lee Milton. At the other end Craig Smith had to be alert throughout with Bliby always capable of pulling something out of the bag. As it was, the home side thought they had gained the ascendancy when former Green midfielder Harry Hrehorow lashed in a left-footer early in the second half. Perhaps a famous win was in the offing. However, the likes of Valler, Mackett, Lockett and Rolfe have that level of experience that has clinched numerous titles and cups down the years and they gradually used their nous to set about engineering a Green victory that maybe has shocked a few people locally. A sublime pass from the impressive Robbie Greenfield set up Poyner who rolled in his and the Green’s second and it was all over when a superb break down the right ended with Kevin Barrett sliding in number three. Matt Hadlum again showed his versatility and willingness to put the team first with a superb performance at left back in a clash well controlled by referee Steve Brown. Next week Lee Milton is unavailable as the Green face a tough away game with Brewmaster but Terry Perk and Jason Reynolds will hopefully be back.

Dave Homewood reports on a frustrating County League stalemate

Entertaining but goalless as Green are held by Snodland

Bromley Green 0 Snodland 0

After a shaky start, the Green gradually assumed the upper hand for much of this sporting encounter at the Swan Ground on another glorious Saturday afternoon; but were unable to pierce a stubborn visitors defence backed up by their quite brilliant keeper Rigden. Settling quickly to their task, Snodland hit a post early on, and rued not taking advantage of their dominance of the opening exchanges as the home side grew in stature and came out buzzing for the second half. Even without injured skipper Mackett and leading scorer Holmes, the Green still did enough to claim maximum points and substitute Seni again caused havoc down the right with his telling runs and teasing crosses. But despite a late onslaught it wasn’t to be as Cornell, Smith (R) and Milton all came within inches of grabbing a decider. The contest, well controlled by Mr MacLeod, illustrated that scoreless matches can at times be exciting and compelling viewing to the end with both outfits going all out for the winner. Neither team are likely challengers for the title this term as their rebuilding takes place but they should make a lot of friends along the way. Next week manager Dave Smith will hopefully be back to full fitness to take his lads for their really stern test away to a Phoenix Sports team tucked in just behind the leaders. Green: C Smith; B Davies, M Hadlum, R Smith, L Marshall, R Norman, M Howells, C Howells, L Milton, M Wallis, D Cornell. Subs: C Norman, K Seni

Reserves earn worthy point at Bearsted

Bearsted Reserves 1 Bromley Green Reserves 1

The Green second team took a strong line-up to Maidstone for this tough-looking league encounter and fully deserved a share of the spoils, which keeps us closely on the heels of the pacesetters. A praiseworthy all-round performance with Liam Smith voting himself man of the match! Tom Poyner was outstanding down the left for the Green whose goal was netted by Ashley Webster. Next week the reserves entertain mid-table Lydd Town Reserves in another Eastern Reserves Division league match. Green: L Williams; S Beale, L Smith, M Davies, D Robson, J Thomas, T Poyner, J Pickard, J Major, T Lockett, A Webster. Subs: A Bond, M Batch, M Wedge

Our local friends did not fare too well today with Kennington going down 5-3 to APM Mears in the Les Leckie Cup while the blues reserves lost again, 3-1 at home to Otford Reserves. An equally disappointing afternoon for the Marsh giants in Division One with New Romney losing 8-1 at home to a rampant Kent University side and Lydd narrowly missing out 2-1 at Staplehurst & Monarchs United. More joy however for the Lyddites seconds who overcome Larkfield Reserves 3-1.

Buffalo gifted late winner in Kent Sunday Premier Cup

Buffalo 3 Bromley Green 2

Goals by Tom Poyner and Terry Perk looked sufficient to see the Green through to the next round of the Kent Cup but amazingly it was the ten-man Maidstone side that finished the stronger to snatch victory with two minutes remaining. Perk, Matt Hadlum and Ryan Holloway were arguably the pick of a Green side still rebuilding. Full marks to all the lads who gave their best and with a little luck might have emerged victors.

Plenty of promise from young Green Reserves

The Locomotive Maidstone 6 Bromley Green Reserves 4

Much more important than the result in this Kent Junior Cup match was the promise shown by so many of our rising stars who will soon hopefully be pushing for first team places. For some reason we managed to clutch defeat from the jaws of victory but many of the youngsters will have gained vital experience. On target for the Ashford boys were Jason Thomas (2), Daryl Hagger and Dan Jackson.

Four Green players chosen for County League Representative side

Dave Smith is rightly proud that four of his boys have been selected for the Kent County League Representative squad for the the next two matches. Glenn Mackett, Craig  Smith, Matt Hadlum and Ryan Smith have all made the cut. Well done lads! Further details as we receive them…

Reserves boss far from happy

A disappointing show against MALGO in the Kent Junior Cup on Saturday that resulted in a 5-1 home defeat has left Steve Wilson and his assistant Alfie Pickard preparing to go back to the drawing board.  Wilson declined to name players publicly but is clearly concerned with the attitude of some reserve team regulars and has revealed he is looking to bring in new signings unless there is a rapid change in commitment. Tommy Lockett netted the Green goal before going off with a dislocated ankle. This Saturday the seconds are at Bearsted Reserves.

Dave Smith reflects on Rusthall defeat
Another tough fought game and again real disappointment of not coming away with a least a point. We started the game playing up hill on a very poor surface, but controlled the early stages and took the lead when Ryan Norman finished well after good work from Dan Cornell, we continued to have the upper hand and were unlucky not to go 2 up when Dan Cornell hit the cross bar. The game changed in the 30th min when the erratic referee awarded Rusthall a soft penalty and 5mins later we were behind, when a long free kick into the box ended up with a Rusthall forward, heading home unchallenged. With the slope now in our favour for the second half, we were confident of getting back in the game. We slowly started to take control, Ryan Smith had a header tipped over and Ryan Norman, Chris Howells and Mark Howells all went close, but for all our endeavour we could not level the game up and it ended in a 2-1 defeat. We had battled well and showed a good attitude and with a bit more luck could have won the game, but this is how things are at the moment, with every game being hard fought and tense to the end, but the big plus is that we are showing on a regular basis that we can compete with all the teams in this league. Snodland at home this week, which now becomes a massive game and we will be going flat out for all 3 points.

Poyner snatches late Premier Cup winner

Pride and commitment sees Green through

Aldington 0 Bromley Green 1

In an entertaining cup tie that saw both sides play some enterprising football, the Green settled things in the closing moments when Tom Poyner ended the deadlock by forcing the ball home after a Matt Wedge shot had been blocked. In truth, the home side should have put the game out of reach in the first half as the Green battled away but created few clear-cut openings. However, a combination of luck, the width of the woodwork and a string of wonderful stops by back to form keeper Craig Smith, led to a 0-0 scoreline at the interval. A more evenly fought second period saw both sides go close but it was the Green, whose unparalleled experience in cup situations is almost worth a goal in itself, who booked a place in the next round. Full marks to the whole squad who refused to be beaten and a special mention to Marty Valle and Matt Wedge who were prepared to put the club first and become cup tied. Also thanks to Ricky Milton who offered to run the line. We have a few injuries, a few that turn up spasmodically and a different line-up each match; but no-one can doubt the commitment of the players and it paid dividends today. Next week we travel to old enemy Buffalo in the Kent Sunday Premier Cup. Man of the match: all the boys were terrific but the great saves of Craig Smith at crucial periods of the game gives him the edge.

With all teams capable of dropping points, epitomised by Kennington’s 4-3 win over Market today, it should be the most open title race for many a year. Bliby are favourites but there is a long way to go yet. For the Green, it is about getting our best side out each week, but it looks like being a season of changes by the week. Steve Mailey, who resigned as Ashford Cavaliers first team manager two weeks ago, made a shock playing comeback this morning but the Premier side suffered perhaps their most humiliating defeat against Ashford Crusaders in the Bodkin Cup.

The afternoon mauling of Thanet Youth Colts was a great way to finish off the weekend and there was further evidence that the future is bright with Jordan O’Gorman, Reece Murrell and Aaron Neil outstanding in a fine squad performance. (See Craig’s report on the Youth Football tab). Next week we welcome our next victims, Dover Town, in what is expected to be Ashley’s last Green appearance.

Dave Smith reflects upon Saturday’s important win at Milton

Three points won in a tough, physical game,is the best way to describe our 4-2 away win at Milton. We again got the perfect start,in the first minute a rasping shot from Mark Howells hit the bar and Ryan Norman headed in.We were playing down the slope with an ever increasing wind, but credit to the side as we tried to keep the ball on the floor and play football. We went 2-0 up when a defencive mix up allowed Chris Holmes to slot home and soon it was three when Chris Howells cross, come shot evaded everyone and nestled in the bottom corner, this gave us a comfortable 3-0 lead to take into the second half. The second half started fairly comfortably for us,but as the wind got stronger,we were gradually pinned back and Milton scored there first goal, with a sharp finish in the 53rd minute,we were now under the cosh and form a wind as sited pass a Milton forward brought them back to 3-2.With 15 Min’s to go looked to be in trouble, but the lads, raised there game and dug in and from a twice taken free kick, cleverly taken by skipper Glen Mackett we regained our 2 goal advantage, with ten to go,tempers frayed and we picked up a couple of bookings as the referee failed to get control a few tasty challenges, but we battled it out and deservedly won 4-2. I give full credit to all the boys today,as we showed we can play good football and also showed we can dig in when we needed to. Next week we have Rusthall away, never a easy place to go,but with them just behind us in the league,we will go confident of coming away with something especially if we continue to play football as we have been,we will have every chance. Thanks to all the people who came and watched last week,it was nice to see and much appreciated. A mixed day for the Green with our firsts really beginning to cement their Kent County Premier status following a fine 4-2 win away to Milton but the Reserves yet again suffering from cup blues by virtue of an extra time 2-1 loss at New Romney in the Divisional Cup. A great result for Dave Smith and the boys as Ashford’s only Premier Division club pulled seven points clear of their hosts; but Wils & co must be wondering when their luck is going to change in cup competitions as Romney recorded their first win of the season down the Avenue. Full reports to follow from the managers. No games for the seniors on Sunday but the Under 16s have a mouthwatering Molten East Kent Youth League trip to highly-rated Betteshanger.

Saturday firsts manager reflects

on a disappointing result…not helped by the referee

Dave

Here is the match report for Saturday. We are training at Highworth tonight, from 7.30 until 8.45. We came away from Orpington on Saturday feeling disappointed that we had lost 2-1,because to me we should have a least taken a point and it was only our own errors that cost us the game. We got the best possible start, when in the 3rd min Ryan Smith curled in a superb free kick from 25 yards to put us one up.Orpington then started to put the pressure on with there route one football, best suited to a team that had several player’s over 6ft,but our defence held firm and we looked dangerous on the break. In the 35min the referee awarded Orpington a penalty, when one of there forwards made the most of a firm challenge, but Craig Smith made a comfortable save to keep us in front at half time. I talked about how we needed to keep possession better in the second half, but my words fell on deaf ears and from the restart we came under constant pressure and it was no sup rise in the 60Th min when Orpington levelled, when we gave the ball away cheaply and was punished. We now had to show character and when the referee dismissed one of the home side for a lunging tackle,we should have taken control of the game, but the aerial bombardment continued and losing there player made no difference to Orpington,as by constantly missing there midfield out, they kept the pressure on and a from corner in the 72ND min they took the lead, when we switched of and left an Orpinton defender unmarked to fire home.Orpington now changed tactics to time wasting,as we did start to take the game to them, but with the referee not hurrying them,we struggled to get any real momentum going, but in the 90Th min Ryan Norman put there right back under pressure in his area and in a scramble he punched the ball away, the referee who was 10 yards away looked for his assistant for help who was 50 yards away and no penalty was awarded and with this the final whistle went. As i stated earlier i was disappointed not to get something out of this match and told the players how i felt, but this is over now and we look to start again Saturday with out trip to Milton. Kent Cup treble success for the Green

Sunday was a successful day for our sides in cup competitions with the firsts defeating neighbours Ashford Cavaliers 4-1, the Reserves winning 5-2 at West Malling against Lynx and the Under 16s romping in 5-0 on the Isle of Thanet. At the Swan Ground, Dean Rolfe returned to the fray and performed as though he had never ‘retired’ as he formed an impressive defensive partnership with the equally immaculate Ryan Holloway. With Glenn Mackett as always making things happen, the Green had to come back from a poor lapse that allowed Cheeseman to give Cavaliers an early headed lead. Terry Perk struck twice to put us in front and in truth the visitors were disappointing during a second half in which Lee Milton and Tom Poyner sealed a comfortable victory that sees us once again drawn against Buffalo. Full marks to Mark Day who had to play despite injury, while again Robbie Greenfield showed why the club has put so much faith in him for the future. At the time of writing the firsts have a free date on Sunday which might not be a bad thing with so many injuries. Meanwhile, the seconds took a strong line-up into their Kent Junior Cup match and duly coasted in 5-2. Ashley Webster led the way with a hat-trick and there were further scores from James Major and Dan Jackson. Typically, the Reserves don’t have a fixture next Sunday either! Not to be outdone by their seniors, the youth team were emphatic 5-0 winners in their cup clash away to Ramsgate Youth Colts (full report on the Youth Football tab).

Tommy Lockett and Lee Milton scored as a new-look Green Reserves side went down 5-2 at Staplehurst & Monarchs United. Dave Smith looks forward to Orpington trip

Saturday we travel to Orpington, for the first of four away fixtures out of the next five matches. These games to me will really show how our season will take shape. We are getting a settled squad now, with the players getting used to each other and building understandings and if we better the 7 points we have from the first 5 games, in the next 5 games I will be more than pleased and it will show we are making the right kind of progress as a team and as a club. Kent Cup tie may be used to experiment

Sunday’s Kent Premier Cup clash provides both the Green and our guests Ashford Cavaliers with  an opportunity to experiment. Following last week’s miserable second half against Market and Cavaliers below-par performance at Bliby, both the home camp and Steve Mailey will no doubt try out some different ideas. For the Green, Matt Hadlum and John Lockett are already absentees while the visitors have lost their captain, Steve Harris, to Market. As the Green rebuild, there have been some positives with Robbie Greenfield beginning to assume authority and hopefully young John Brewster will become more reliable and make a name for himself. Kick off at the Swan Ground is 10.30am. Green probable squad [as anything can happen between now and kick off!]: Craig Smith; Danny Valler, Ryan Holloway, Terry Perk, Bryn Williams, Ben Henaghan, Lee Milton, John Brewster, Gary Mickelborough, Glenn Mackett, Robbie Greenfield, Tom Poyner, Joe Hopkins, Jason Reynolds

Cornell too hot to handle for Sheerness

Dave Smith talks to The Green Lane

Here is the match report for Saturday, also on the web site, can you put no senior training Tuesday, as the light goes too quickly and I am meeting a guy from the Highworth School at 7pm regarding using their facility. A good 3 points, that has moved us into the top half of the table, especially as 4 of our next 5 games are away from home. We started slowly with Sheerness taking the game to us, without really causing us many problems, we then started taking control, going close on a couple of occasions and in the 31st min, from Ryan Norman’s inswinging corner Chris Howells scored with a good header. We held onto this lead comfortably and went in one up at half time. We again started the second half in control, but from a deflection, on the hour, the ball fell kindly to a Sheerness forward, who finished well, for the next few minutes, we were rattled and were lucky not to go 2-1 down, when Sheerness hit the post. We recovered our composure and Dan Cornell burst through the Sheerness defence and finished well, to put us back in the lead and in the 75 min the same player again showing great composure, for such a young player and again finished well, to put us 3-1 ahead and sealed the points for us. Sheerness may have not been the best side we have played this season, but the boys gave a solid performance and showed good character, after last week’s mauling at Cray, there were good performances from Ben Davies at right back and the central midfield pairing of Haden Slade and Chris Howells and the work rate of our forwards Dan Cornell and Chris Holmes always gave us the edge. A good day all around, with a decent crowd to encourage the lads, many thanks to you all for making the effort.

**********

Briefly…Saturday’s fine win over Sheerness was countered with a sound beating at Staplehurst for the Reserves who had Tommy Lockett on target in a 5-2 scoreline. No other details yet available. Sunday’s defeat to Market was largely down to a below-par second half display againt the former Green players. Robert Greenfield again showed his potential while the Green score was provided by Gary Mickelborough from the penalty spot. We were down to the bare bones with veteran Mark Day having to make a comeback but Injuries cannot be used as an excuse and there is clearly still much work to be done. Fifteen goals conceded in three games tells its own story. Manager Phil Wedge played for the full 90 minutes in the defeat at Churchills, which represents a major setback to any promotion hopes. Attention for the firsts this coming Sunday turns to Kent Premier Cup action when Ashford Cavaliers visit the Swan Ground (10.30am). Both camps acknowledge little chance of winning the competition this time round and there could be two  experimental line-ups with the winners facing the prospect of a visit to Maidstone side Buffaloes in the next round.

Dave Smith looks forward to Saturday’s clash with Sheerness
After last weeks mauling at Cray, this week’s game against Sheerness takes on a greater meaning, as we need to take 3 points to push us into mid table, in what is proving to be a very unpredictable league, with many results not going the expected way. Sheerness have no points from 4 matches, but in my memory they are always a good footballing side who are hard to beat, so we need to forget about last week and get back to things that we have been doing well in our earlier matches.

Here is the match report for Saturday’s nightmare at Cray (by Dave Smith)

A couple of late withdrawal’s and the reserves struggling to get a full side meant we travelled with 13 players and not at full strength. This however was not the reason we took a good beating. The game started in the expected manor with Cray putting us under pressure and we conceded the first goal on 10 Min’s when Matt Hadlum was caught in possesion,in his own area and the Cray forward slotted home.We then managed to start to play and from a good cross from Karl Seni,Ryan Norman finished well at the far post, this rattled Cray and we started to dominate the game. Then the turning point,Ryan Smith did the same as Matt Hadlum, getting caught in possession, but this time he grabbed the Cray forward to stop him,the ref awarded a free kick and after requests from the Cray players for a red card, the ref after consulting his linesman dismissed Ryan, this was a debatable decision,as our back 4 were all within a few yards of Ryan so it was not a cut and dried red card.We survived this but 2 Min’s later in the 33rd min the ref,who was now really showing his bias towards the home side, awarded them a penalty when Cray player to me dived in the area.2.1 soon became 3 as Karl Seni, not learning from other mistakes got caught in possession ,then on the stroke of half time it was 4 when we got caught with the active not active of side rule, with the person deemed by the ref to be in active scoring. Harsh words were spoken in the changing room, the game was gone but i asked for pride and for the boys to come out and give a good second half display. This proved to be to much for some of the lads and although we forced there keeper into 3 good saves and also had a shot cleared of the line,Cray comfortably rattled in 4 more and missed another dubious penalty and Craig Smith performed heroics at times to keep the score down. 3 bookings,2 pens and a sending off for us,the ref went home happy. In the bigger picture of the whole season, this hopefully will teach us all a lesson,Cray were good but not that good, certain players under performed and they know the reasons as it has been spelt out to them.We have taken a lot of praise over the opening weeks of the season, but as i have stated there is 28 league games and non of them are easy,so we know have to start again, forget about the first month of the season and re-group and make sure we are ready for our next set of fixtures. On a disappointing note for me,we only had 1 spectator at the game and my voice against 50 Cray fans.Lets be a club not individual teams and support each other. Managers MOM Glen Mackett ,stuck at it when others couldn’t.

With Ryan Holloway forced to pull out at the eleventh hour, the Green were down to anyone that could walk on Sunday with the injured Ashley Webster having to turn out. After last week’s 5-5 thriller with Brewmaster, the top rate entertainment continued with the Green having to come back from 4-2 behind to nick the points in the dying minutes. Spurred on by the inspiring John Lockett and a terrific display by Robbie Greenfield, the home team were thankful to Jason Reynolds (4) and Gary Mickelborough for their victory.

Dave Smith relishes challenge away to Cray

Our first away game of the season promises to be a real test, as Cray have made a solid start to the season especially at home. But with a strong squad to choose from we will go there determined to come away with something. Micky Davies returns from holiday and Ryan Smith is off his ban, so these add to the strength of the squad from last week and if we can continue to do the simple things right and show the right commitment and are willing to play and grow as a team, I think the season will be one that we can all enjoy. A note for any supporters wishing to come, we will be leaving the Burger King at the cinema complex at 12.45 sharp. A reminder for all players, that your club membership (£20) is due by the end of September and if you want to spread the cost, see your relevant manager, but we must get this money in as it is an important part of the club running successfully.

Fightback earns a point in entertaining opener

Bromley Green 5 Brewmaster 5

Two unconvincing defences that will need to settle down in the coming months helped to provide 5-star entertainment in the season’s opener at the Swan Ground on Sunday. From the Green’s perspective the positives come from the terrific team spirit that is already developing while the Brews are going to cause plenty of sides problems with their forward surges led by the ever-dangerous Danny Jennings. Captain Glenn Mackett lifted his troops after we had gone behind early on; first with a superb break and finish down the middle, followed by a spot kick after the marauding Ryan Holloway had been scythed down. After the interval the visitors romped into a 5-2 advantage but the Green showed courage to come back and share the spoils with further scores by John Lockett, Kevin Barrett and a visiting defender. Once he had settled in, debutant Matt Hadlum began to shine and Ben Henaghan proved what a valuable member of the squad he is by coming on in the second half and raising the tempo. Next Sunday the Green hope to have Jason Reynolds back for the visit of much-fancied Bethersden while Mackett joins Tom Poyner on the holidaying list.

Bromley Green 0 Phoenix 2 … Manager’s Report

On a windy day, that affected the match, we suffered our first defeat of the season. In my opinion Phoenix were not as good as either Bly Spartans or Stansfeld, but on the day we never really had the cutting edge to score the goals we needed, even though we had a good amount of possession. We started poorly and could have been one down in the first minute, when the Phoenix striker hit the bar. We found it hard going against a strong wind and could not create much going forward. We conceded the first goal in the 25min when we were guilty of over playing at the back and got punished by the Pheonix forward nicking possession and finishing well. We were now desperate to keep the score to one at half time, but in the fourth minute of injury time some sloppy defending from a set piece enabled Phoenix to score again and take a 2-0 half time lead.

The second half started slowly with Phoenix slowing the game down at every opportunity, but we gradually started to build some pressure and in the 65th min we were awarded a penalty for an off the ball incident. Unfortunately Glenn Mackett’s spot kick was well saved, but this spurred us on and we went close on several occasions, with Ryan Norman and Mark Howells being our main threat, but we could not get the goal to bring us back into the match and the game ended in a 2-0 defeat.

Despite the loss I was still pleased with the effort and commitment from the team. Glenn Mackett had a good game in midfield and Ryan Norman and Mark Howells showed some good skills and put in a lot of good work for the side.

Next week we have a tough trip to Cray Valley, but as the season is still taking shape for a lot of sides, with many surprising results, we will go confident of coming back with something from the game.

Marty Valle the pick as Reserves win again

After four pre-season wins the Sunday Reserves opened their league campaign away to the Crusader and secured a vital three points with a 3-1 win. Ashley Webster, Ricky Milton (from the penalty spot), and a stunner from young Dan Jackson accounted for the Green goals. In a game that threatened to boil over, the Green kept their heads and showed a lot of discipline by not getting involved in petty squabbles. A contented Phil Wedge reflected: “Like all good Green squads of the past we played football and took the points, we now look forward to our trip to Egerton next Sunday.” Commenting on Phil’s selection of Marty Valle as man of the match, Patron Dave Homewood said, “It is so rewarding to see the progress Marty has made in his short time at the club. He is a young lad that joined us in the summer with no chips on his shoulder and whilst he clearly needs some basic tuition, the potential is obvious and I know his ambition is to make the first team in time. That’s the kind of attitude Terry and myself are looking for”. Also catching the eye was young centre back Reece Hagger and the hard-working Joseph Mifsud. Squad: S Dadd; R Milton, R Floyd, R Hagger, M Valle, D Hagger, M Wedge, R Greenfield, D Jackson, A Webster, J Mifsud. Sub M D’Agostino

Dave Smith talks about Saturday’s great win

Our first victory of the season was another tense affair, on a blistering hot day, which all players found hard to deal with. The visitors started well using a 5 man midfield that caused us problems and it was no surprise that they took the lead after 20 minutes, when a long cross field ball was not dealt with properly and the Bly forward finished well. We then adjusted our formation to match theirs and came more into the game and in the 33rd min a cross from debutant Ryan Norman was flicked home by Chris Holmes to bring us level.

The second half started with us under pressure, but keeper Craig Smith was again in superb form and kept us in the game, we gradually came more into the match, with Glenn Mackett, debutants Mark Howells and Haden Slade taking control of the midfield. The introduction of substitutes Ryan Strand and Jason Reynolds gave us the fresh legs we needed and an excellent cross from Strand was turned in by Holmes for his second of the game. We now faced the expected onslaught, but to a man everyone dug in and we managed to hold on to secure all 3 points.

This was a good victory and as a team we are working hard for each other and starting to gel together and if we can continue to improve in this manner, we have the chance to compete in this league.

Full marks to the Green who battled back from a goal down to snatch the vital three Kent County Premier League points on offer at the Swan Ground on Saturday. Preview of Saturday’s home game

Dave Smith talks to The Green Lane

Our second game of the season pitches us against Bly Spartans, please don’t be fooled that after 2 games they are bottom of the league, as I watched them twice last year on their way to winning the Eastern division easily and they are a very useful outfit and we will have to improve on last weeks efforts to get something out of the game. There are a few changes to the squad form last week due to holidays and new players but I am happy with this, as I look to get a more settled squad in the weeks to come. Training again was a non event and I will be speaking to everyone about their commitment to this, as we need to train, as all good sides do, it not only improves fitness but builds a spirit in the side, which helps in games.

Wedge disappointed at Dobbin exit
Jamie Dobbin has today sent Phil Wedge a text message stating he wishes to return to Market after just one season at the Green. Clearly shocked after the player featured in last night’s game against Guildhall and was picked for Sunday’s tournament at Cavaliers, the Sunday Reserves manager told The Green Lane
tonight: “What beggars belief is that only last night he told Dave and myself that he was available for Sunday. Is it that with nineteen players on a roll-on, roll-off friendly he thinks he should not spend his fair share of time on the bench? I guess we will never know.” A club insider said “This is unfair on Phil as he has gone out of his way to organise a string of pre-season games for lots of players in the club while other local sides do bugger all. Players are free to go where they want, but it leaves a bad taste when they enjoy the friendlies and then at the last minute jump ship.” Patron Dave Homewood was surprised: “I thought Jamie was doing well and happy here and a good showing this weekend would have put him in with a shout of a first team opportunity. Still, like all the others who think the grass is greener elsewhere, we thank him for his services and wish him well.”

Hagger and Reynolds both grab Tuesday night hat-tricks

Bromley Green Sunday XI 9 Guildhall 1

Phil Wedge used this friendly to give a run-out to a number of newcomers to the club and it did no harm at all as the boys continue to get to know each other better. In total 19 lads were rotated and amongst the goals were Jason Reynolds and Daryl Hagger (right), each with well-taken hat-tricks.

The club expect to announce at least three more major signings before the weekend but has dispelled rumours that a third team is in the offing. Patron Dave Homewood said “The idea of a third team again on Sundays is just a rumour, but yes once again more quality players are wanting to join after a good clear out during the summer; maybe next term when our Under 16s come through we will look at another team. But let’s talk about the exciting times at the club now, with competition for places bound to be fierce for all five teams, which is a healthy thing, especially after the holidays and suspensions are put to bed. This Sunday  the Green take two teams to the Goldwyn School for Ashford Cavaliers 6-a-side  tournament (meet Swan Ground 9am).

Dave Smith reflects on spirited opening display

Bromley Green 3 Stansfeld & OB 3
A hard earned point, with the team showing tremendous spirit and determination, was the most pleasing aspect for me. During the first 45 minutes we had little chance to attack as Stansfeld, dominated, with a sharp passing game, our defence and midfield dug in and defended well, Stanfield’s best chance came in the 35 min, in a one on one situation, with keeper Craig Smith who pulled of a tremendous save. The second half started with a flurry of goals, first in the 47 min, a 25 yard rocket left Craig Smith with no chance, then 2 minutes later a deep cross was headed home to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. At this stage I felt we were dead and buried, but the lads responded superbly, the introduction of new signing Karl Seni on the wing gave us a new attacking outlet and in the 53 min Chris Holmes rounded the keeper to score, 5 minutes later from a Seni cross another debutant 17 year old Dan Cornell headed home to bring us level. The visitors were rocked and in the 65 min, we took the lead, when Cornell and Holmes combined well, with Holmes slotting home. We now faced a barrage of attacks, but with Craig Smith in tremendous form and the whole team giving all they had we looked like we would hang on to register a stunning win, but in the 92 min the ref awarded Stansfeld a penalty after a rash challenge from centre back Ryan Smith, which was slotted home to leave the game a 3-3 draw. After the game, although we had drawn, I felt we had given a great performance and players should be proud of their performance. I had 8 players making their debuts and 8 players in the squad just 18 years old. This was a good start to the season and hopefully a foundation to build on. A special thanks to Steve Wilson, Matt Wedge, Phil Wedge, Paul Koncheski, Ryan Smith and Liam Smith for their help setting everything up on Saturday morning. Patron’s Sunday night review

Great weekend but the injuries are piling up already. The three Green teams in action at the weekend all did well but the injury list is growing and with us already running on a shoestring we can only hope none are too serious. The worst casualty could be Sunday Reserves captain Ashley Webster (left) who, if early

reports are correct, has cracked ribs and seems destined to play little part on the field before he goes abroad in November. Also suffering at the weekend were Micky Davies, Jason Thomas, Daryl Hagger and Gary Mickelborough. Let’s hope they all mend quickly. Before moving on, my personal thanks to all those who toiled over the weekend, and no doubt will continue to do so over the course of the season. Especially Max, Ian, Alvin for work with the bar and food; Paul and Phil with the painful goals [we must get this sorted, it is embarrassing and dangerous]; and of course the managers who can never please all the people all the time! The weather just had to mess things up on Sunday but I hope everybody enjoyed themselves and I thank you all for helping create a really positive atmosphere as we undergo a major on-field rebuilding. Hope to see everybody Tuesday at club night. DH

Green player of the weekend

There were many candidates [Holmes, Cornell, Senni, Mackett, Lockett, Reynolds are but a few that come to mind] but perhaps the vote goes to keeper Craig Smith whose brilliant stops on Saturday when we were nervously finding our feet really kick-started a successful weekend.

Glenn Mackett who was back to his inspirational best at the weekend

Mackett and Lockett on the scoresheet but new capture Reynolds steals the show

Bromley Green 7 Ashford Cavaliers 2

Excellent in a blistering opening twenty minutes of precision, pace and fine finishing, the new-look Green came out on top in this friendly from which both camps claimed to have learned a great deal. Steve Mailey, manager of the visitors who did well to come back and force a number of terrific stops from the in-form Craig Smith, said “This has been useful for me, I have been able to see positives and also that some are perhaps not ready for this level yet”. For the Green, the introduction of new signing Jason Reynolds gave a fresh impetus to the attack and had Dave Homewood looking forward to pairing him with Gary Mickelborough, who missed the game through an injured ankle; “Jason fitted in straight away and I hope he will be with us for many years to come now. The movement up front with Poyner and Jackson was most pleasing considering this was their first run-out together. These three, with Gary when he is fit, give us plenty of options and should worry a lot of defences with their pace and potential to hit the net. Terry and I were pleased with the attitude of the whole squad. After next week’s tournament at the Goldwyn School, we just have to get it right and hit the ground running. Already though injuries, suspensions and holidays in the first month are making planning very difficult.” So the game served its purpose with Cavaliers most impressive performer on the day clearly Billy McColm who was superb throughout whilst Charlie Clark was immaculate at the back for the Green. For the hosts, the goals came from Glenn Mackett, Tom Poyner, Dan Jackson, Reynolds (2), Bryn Williams and the outstanding, modest, John Lockett. Squad: Smith; Valler, Lockett, Clark, Henaghan, Greenfield, Mackett, Williams, Poyner, Reynolds, Jackson, Carfrae, Perk

Below par – but reserves win again

Bromley Green Reserves 6 Ashford Cavaliers Reserves 1

With the exception of goals from Ashley Webster (3), Joe Mifsud (1), Daryl Hagger (1), and a 25-yard stunner from James Major, Green Reserves squad manager Phil Wedge failed to take many positives from today’s friendly game against Ashford Cavaliers Reserves. The one real bright spot being the display of debutant 16-year-old centre back Kenny Lang. But it was nice to see a return to the fold of Ryan Holloway, while Phil looks forward to this Tuesday when we welcome our old friends from the Folkestone League, Guildhall, to the Swan Ground when he will be using all the younger players and new signings to the club. Kick off is at 6.30pm. Sunday’s squad: S Dadd; R Milton, J Dobbin, K Lang, R Floyd, R Hagger, J Major, M Wedge, D Hagger, A Webster, J Mifsud, A Wilson, R Holloway, D ‘Agastino, C Burden Phil’s man of the match: Matty Wedge

Saturday night briefly…

All smiles at the Green despite last minute leveller from Stansfeld

Bromley Green 3 Stansfeld & OB 3

A last minute spot kick could not dampen the spirit of a Green squad that even with six lads away played their part in this highly entertaining Kent County Premier clash on Saturday. Two breathtaking stops from keeper Craig Smith, an inspired captain’s performance from Glenn Mackett and goals by Chris Holmes (2) and Dan Cornell brought the home team to within seconds of a memorable win. The terrific attitude from all the boys, who battled back from two goals down, was a credit to the club with Patron Dave Homewood enthusing: “Everyone, and I include the unsung backroom staff here, can be proud of today. Make no mistake it marks the beginning of a new era and the atmosphere is so positive.  One swallow doesn’t make a summer but Dave and the lads are off to a very encouraging start.” The only sour notes were first day injuries to stalwart Micky Davies and young Jason Thomas. Full report from manager Dave Smith to follow

Next Saturday the firsts are again at home with Bly Spartans the visitors (2.45pm) for what promises to be another closely fought affair. Bly lost 2-0 at home to Lewisham this afternoon.

New manager, new faces for the big kick off

This Saturday sees Dave Smith take charge of his first meaningful match for the Saturday first team who play host to Stansfeld & OB Club. Pre-season has been low key but excellent performances against Kent Leaguers Dover Athletic and Folkestone Invicta give cause for quiet optimism. Dave spoke exclusively to The Green Lane tonight:

“On the eve of my first official game in charge of Bromley Green, I feel a real excitement for the coming season. I have added several new faces and am still pursuing others. A lot of the new faces will be younger players, but all have ability and technique and my aim is to mould these lads along with the existing experience from last season, into a team that can compete in this league and build a platform and structure for not only this season but for the years ahead. This to me is the only way forward for the club and with us all working towards this goal, I feel we can have a good season.”

Squad: C.Smith, M.Davies, R.Smith, M.Hadlum, L.Marshall, A.Davies, G.Mackett, J.Gardner, J.Thomas, C.Holmes, R.Strand, J.Mifsud, K.Senni, B.Davis, L.Smith

Extra game: to continue giving opportunities to newcomers, Phil Wedge has squeezed in another pre-season match for Tuesday night (6.30pm) against our friends from our Folkestone League days, Guildhall. The competition for places in both Sunday sides is hotting up but do ring Phil if you fancy a trial with no obligation on 07955587989.

Message to Under 16s from Terry: League signing-on forms must be brought to Club Night on Tuesday at the absolute latest please…they are now well overdue…don’t forget that parents must sign front and reverse. Preferably, forms can be returned to Terry or Dave at the ground this Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning. Thanks.

Sunday sides prepare for a new season

Gary Mickelborough who will be vital this term as we rebuild

This Sunday there are two home games against our friends from nearby Ashford Cavaliers, both kicking off at 10.30am. The firsts and seconds will continue to look at new faces as an enforced rebuilding programme takes shape. The senior side,  without the holidaymaking Lee Milton and skipper Glenn Mackett, will unveil a new striker who comes highly recommended by old boy Gary Skillett but it is quite refreshing that we are now not expected to win every game and the pressure is for once on our opponents. Danny Valler, Tom Poyner and Charlie Clark are expected to be added to last week’s squad. Dave Homewood told The Green Lane tonight: “We are going to need patience as the emphasis will be on youth but there is at least one new goalscorer joining this week (maybe two, I am in talks with another) and if he can forge a partnership with Gary Mickelborough then things could start to buzz again.  Ryan Holloway is eager to return to the action while Bryn Williams, Robert Greenfield and Richie Richardson are likely to keep their places after last weeks debuts. When everybody is fit and available, there should be plenty of competition for places; but our main concern is not to bring too many kids in too soon, it is all about timing and acting in everybody’s best interests. Terry and myself will have a squad of 16 or 17 and Phil likewise for the seconds and it cannot be over stressed that we view all players as available for Sunday Premier or Division Two football.  Anyone really doing it in the reserves will get their chance and then it’s up to them. Realistically it is going to take at least a month to try and get all the lads settled and comfortable in their teams and positions”. After a fine run last year, Steve Mailey’s team, with Pat Law returning, will be looking to have a crack at the title in what should be an open fight with Bethersden and Bliby also expected to challenge Market. Cavaliers seconds come to the Swan Ground in good pre-season nick managed by another former Green man Dale Stringer. Green manager Phil Wedge (below) has only Robbie Bower (work) missing and is likely to have a squad of about 18 players to run the rule over. Phil is keen to have a look at some newcomers that Alvin Gigg is introducing to the club plus young new signing John Brewster who has showed up well in training.  Ian and Alvin will be providing a bar-b-que after the games. Let’s hope for some decent weather!

New season beckons …

The Green’s Kent County League campaign gets under way on Saturday when we are at home to Stansfeld O&B Club. The visitors drew their opener last Saturday away to Phoenix Sports 2-2. Kick off at the Swan Ground is 2.45pm.

Two new lads joined the Club on Sunday and featured in the 5-0 friendly defeat away to a very useful and well drilled SIMLA side. Robbie Richardson and Bryn Williams will prove to be good acquisitions but we still need a big target man to hold the ball and provide for willing runners. Despite the scoreline, there were lots of positives and more ideas can be tried out this coming Sunday against Ashford Cavaliers (10.30am).

Sunday firsts look forward to first warm-up game

The Sunday firsts travel to East Peckham this weekend for their first pre-season friendly against SIMLA with a new-look squad and there is excitement in the camp as a fresh era beckons following the shock resignation of long-serving manager Dave Andrews last week.  With a number of players deciding to leave, the side has the chance to rebuild and there is an opportunity for several newcomers to make their mark alongside established stars such as Glenn Mackett, John Lockett, Danny Valler, Terry Perk, Gary Mickelborough and Lee Milton. Speaking exclusively to The Green Lane Dave Homewood said “Terry and myself will be looking for Charlie Clark and Tom Poyner to really push themselves this season and help the experienced lads to bring through a number of promising youngsters. Reserves manager Phil Wedge is also assisting us during this transitional period and is encouraging his best young players to have a go at making a first team slot their own.  We are, I believe, a couple of quality players away from having a well balanced group that just might surprise a few people. We will take a squad of about 16 to East Peckham, seven of whom will be making their first appearance. These are exciting times and there is much interest in the match both inside and outside the club”.

Will players and supporters meet at the Swan Ground 9am please [our hosts are laying on food afterwards]

With over three weeks till the start of the league campaign, the Green are still offering trials for both their Saturday and Sunday set-ups and anyone out there who fancies a shot at it is welcome to ring Dave Homewood on 09780869351 or email davehomewood@bromleygreen.co.uk

Steve Wilson on the pre-season friendly with Woodchurch

We won 3-1 (tom poyner, joe mifsud, charlie clark) This really was our first proper friendly ,be able to field my main bulk of players i will be using throughout the season.we started brightly first 15 mins popping the ball about and of course when we got wide we were creating chances with jason thomas putting in some delightful crosses, we took the lead through tom poyner.then we stopped playing we were second to the ball and kept trying to go thru the middle which didnt work.At half time made some changes and thru on some of our younger players who as in previous games got us back on track ,playing with pace and enthusiam ,and it wasnt long before we were 2 up thru joe mifsud neat finish, joe being made captain was superb thru out the game and is relishing his new role.woodchurch pulled 1 back then charlie clark rapped up the game with a route 1 goal. Both me and jim were pleased with the performance and especially the workrate of the younger players .cheers SW

“Typical Green” says Wilson as 3-0 lead frittered away

Steve Wilson was less than pleased with the performance in a friendly outing at home to Kennington on Saturday that saw the Green snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Three goals up at the break, it certainly was a game of two halves with the visitors not believing their luck as they waltzed through at will in the second period to deservedly win 5-3. Not good enough, and Wilson quite rightly expects players to start taking responsibility instead of pointing fingers at others.

Message from Saturday first manager on wedding eve

As many of you are aware I am away until Tue 19 Aug, I return at 5.00 and will be at training that evening, as our first league game against Stansfield is on Sat 23rd. Steve Wilson has helped me out by agreeing to take training in my absence and I thank him for that, let’s hope more of you attend so that when the league gets underway we are as fit as possible. I am confident of adding some more players to the squad before the start of the season, maybe not with the experience we could possibly do with, but players with youthful enthusiasm, who could get our season off to a good start and build in the right way for the future of the club. Dave Smith

Sunday firsts: please note we begin on 17 August away to SIMLA.  Then 24 August home to Ashford Cavaliers. More details nearer the time. DH.

Wedge ready for Hastings battle

This Sunday Hastings League champions Kurdish United visit the Swan Ground in another pre-season warm-up for the reserves. Manager Phil Wedge, unhappy at the low number of his players at training, is looking forward to the game: “This is the sort of match they will all want to play in but tonight’s turn-out for training is not acceptable and I will be having words”. Also at home on Sunday are the Under 16s who have a few away on holiday but it should be an entertaining game with local side Kennington. Both matches kick off at 10.30am.

Is there a proven goalscorer out there?

The Green senior teams are looking better by the hour but we still need at least one forward that can guarantee twenty or thirty goals a season. With Marcus Hodges now not playing either Saturday or Sunday, we have lost the extra edge that a proven goalscorer can provide in tight games. If you are out there and reading this, come and join in training on Tuesday at the ground with no obligation (arrive about 6.30pm for 7pm start) or ring Dave Homewood (07980869351) or email davehomewood@bromleygreen.co.uk

Reviewing the weekend

Firstly, my thanks and congratulations to our team managers, who put in a great deal of work to field sides that were a credit to the club in all four games at the Swan Ground this weekend. Also, I acknowledge the hours put in by Alvin Gigg and Paul Chekov who attended all weekend to make sure people were served and those endless little jobs were taken care of. It is to be hoped that support for Dave Smith and Steve Wilson prior to and after games soon improves as they are working well together but cannot be expected to do everything themselves on the day. Results in warm-up games are not too important and I will let the managers submit their reports; but the influx of fresh faces in the senior sides plus the number of youngsters showing interest and huge potential, augurs well for the future. Craig Smith and Tony Williams have the job of bringing the really young lads through and it is refreshing that there is already dialogue with the senior managers to ensure their progress is timed correctly. Craig’s first match in charge of the Under 16s on Sunday saw him refereeing against Betteshanger! Despite dozens of phone calls, not one referee was willing to officiate the boys’ match, which I find sad. We are missing John Roffey already! Training is on Tuesday but there are no midweek fixtures this coming week. On Saturday Steve Wilson takes charge against Kennington (3pm) while on Sunday the Under 16s welcome Kennington again with the seconds entertaining Hastings outfit Kurdish United. Both games kick off at 10.30am. DH.

Saturday Reserves boss Steve Wilson is placing his faith in youth and is prepared to be patient as the club enters a transitional period. Steve will be in charge of Saturday’s home pre-season game with local friends Kennington (3pm) and is expected to field a mixture of potential first and second teamers as new faces begin to settle in at the club.

Green Reserves 4 Man of Kent 1 (Managers report to follow)

Bromley Green 0 Dover Athletic Reserves 1
Another good work out is the way I would describe the game against a fairly useful Dover Res side. We conceded the only goal of the game in the 40th min, when a dipping shot beat keeper Craig Smith. Prior to that the game had been fairly even, with Chris Holmes unlucky not to score after rounding the keeper and Ryan Smith having a long range shot well saved. The second half was difficult for all the players in the very humid conditions, but I was pleased the lads stuck at it and only a last ditch tackle on Chris Holmes stopped us equalising. But overall, Dover did deserve there win. Reflecting on both our games this week, I felt that the Dover game came a little early after the Folkestone match as I thought the players at times lacked a bit on Saturday. But all credit to all the players used in both matches, as I feel we have made good progress in the build up to the start of the season and to be involved in two tight 1-0 matches against Kent League opposition is a credit to us all. Squad: Craig Smith, Dave Robson, Matt Hadlum, Ryan Smith, Liam Marshall, Frankie Compretio, Antony Davis, Glenn Mackett, Amhed, Ben Davis, Chris Holmes, Metin Zurrell, Haden Slade, Matt Bamford.

Centre back Hadlum heads Green to opening win

Bromley Green 1 Folkestone Invicta Res 0

New signing, centre back Matthew Hadlum, thundered in a great 68th minute winner as the Green opened their pre-season friendlies with an impressive victory over Kent Leaguers Folkestone Invicta at the Swan Ground on Wednesday evening

First team manager Dave Smith reports exclusively to The Green Lane

Our 1st friendly on Wednesday against Folkestone Res proved to be a good start to the build up for the season and the 1-0 victory was well deserved. Several new faces played their first game for the club and overall the performance level of all 15 players used was very good. The blend of youth and experience that we had worked well and I thank the experienced players for the commitment and encouragement they passed over to the younger lads. We played some good football and the boys kept the ball and used the pitch well, which at times gave Folkestone lots of problems

With our pre-season training still really to take off, our fitness levels were very good, especially as we were playing against a side who train twice a week and who have already played 4 friendlies. We now move on to Saturday with a double header. The reserves will take on the Man of Kent and the 1st play Dover Res. There will be changes from the 1st team squad as the holiday season is starting to kick in, but these games are all about preparing for the season ahead and building to get it right when the league starts.

Thanks to Steve Wilson, Matt Wedge, Paul Chekov and all that came to support and hope to see as many as possible there Saturday.

Under 16s to meet the league champions

The league champions Betteshanger have accepted an invitation to visit the Swan Ground on Sunday 27 July for a pre-season friendly with the Green’s Under 16s. Kick off is at 2pm. Patron Dave Homewood told The Green Lane “What a fantastic way to start preparing for next season when we will be in the higher Division Two section. Betteshanger finished top of the tree last time and if we are going to emerge over a period of time as the best, then this is exactly the kind of test we need on the learning curve. Craig and Tony will have the boys buzzing by then and whatever the result it should be a really entertaining affair. I am also hoping more members and parents/relatives will come and support the boys this year as we move up a notch into the second division. They will have a new sponsored kit the same as the top Saturday side with their names on the back [vain lot!], new tracksuits and an opportunity to really make a name for themselves as they approach senior football.”

Two Bromley Green greats were in attendance on Friday night as another season of mixed fortunes was celebrated. The first ever winner of the Bill Mickelborough Memorial Shield for Clubman of the Year in 1973, Bob Mummery, made a rare appearance to award the coveted trophy to Terry Perk. Goalkeeping legend John Kelly re-presented the impressive Tommy Stafford Memorial Cup for the Youth Clubman to Martyn Dalby. Vice Chairman Peter Interieri welcomed Brenda Mummery and Shirley Kelly and said they were wonderful examples of the strength of the ‘Bromley Green family’.  Speaking to The Green Lane later, Patron Dave Homewood stated “We should treasure these moments; Bob and John stand for everything that Bromley Green believes in…hard work, loyalty, honesty and looking after each other when the chips are down. Brenda and Shirley have hardly changed and I hope we see them much more often. We have lost Tommy Stafford and tonight we have been informed of the death of another Green stalwart, Vic Stanley. Our condolences go to his wife Ruth and children Mark, David, Matthew and Sarah. A round of applause in memory of Tommy, Vic and young player Barry Cunningham while at the same time celebrating a first baby for Lee and Fiona was I think an  appropriate gesture of respect. Of course we congratulate Lee and Fiona on the birth of Sophie and share in their joy.” Lee Milton was awarded the Chairmans Award for Endeavour and the loyal clubman also lifted the Sunday firsts managers player of the year as well as receiving recognition for 400 senior appearances. But it is the younger fraternity that continues to give hope for the future with Darryl Hagger being voted the Most Improved Player and Krzysztof Pierzchala the Most Improved Youth Player. Referring to the club’s backers, The Patron continued “It was fantastic of Sue (5S Drainage) to share the evening with us and she has already committed to further sponsorship next season.  Along with Keith Cornell, Gary Skillett and our vice presidents we are so lucky to have such enthusiastic and genuine backing.” The first winner of the Ernie Wedge Memorial Trophy for Supporter of the Year went to the indefatigable Alan Webster. Patron: Looking forward to next season

Just days before Friday’s annual awards ceremony, the club’s Patron has issued an upbeat message to members to prepare for next season and prove the doubters wrong. Speaking exclusively to The Green Lane, Dave Homewood agreed last season had its fair share of setbacks but he felt that on and off the field the Green are well positioned to bounce back. “We have just come through an awkward few months but I am proud of all the players, managers and supporters for their efforts on behalf of our club. After Friday’s presentations, I am not interested in dwelling on the past as I am aware of the hard work already being put in by our managers and Development Officer Terry Perk to make sure we are on track next term. That said, let’s not forget that we won the Bodkin Cup, the Ashford Charity Trophy and were cruelly beaten in the Weald of Kent Cup final – not bad for a club at a low ebb! But no, last season by our standards was largely unacceptable.” Player news is expected soon from Dave Smith and Steve Wilson who have the task of bringing success to the Saturday seniors while the Sunday firsts are determined to regain their crown under Dave Andrews and Dave Homewood. With a back-up team of Jamie Allan, Terry Perk, Lee Gilham and Mark Day, The Patron is quietly confident: “Dave [Andrews] and myself are not interested in second-best and it is no secret we are on the look-out for fresh, quality players to boost the squad. We have a few irons in the fire and hope to make announcements shortly.” Meanwhile, Phil Wedge has been elected to continue running the Sunday seconds with a mandate to nurture and provide top-notch players for the first team. There is still time for any prospective new player to join the club – just turn up for training and a chat on Tuesday 1 July at the Swan Ground without obligation. Referring to rumours concerning some of the Green’s top players, Homewood clarified: “I have shook hands with Pat Kingwell and David Cook and of course there will be some Sundays when they will be unavailable and I respect that at this stage of their careers their Saturday football takes priority. However, they have been stalwarts at this club and I don’t see either of them doing household chores on a Sunday morning! Marcus Hodges will not be returning, at least not for a while, as he has moved to Faversham and Sarah is expecting another baby in November. We have had an amicable chat and of course the door is always open to the most prolific striker Ashford has seen for many years.” Perhaps the most exciting prospects are the lads coming through the ranks in the Under 16s who improved dramatically under the expert tuition of Steve Mailey during the second half of last season. New FA laws prevent us giving the boys experience in the senior friendlies but their time will soon come and with new signings Kieran Hawkins and Liam Wratten added to the squad and a couple of others in the pipeline, optimism is running high. The boys, who will have their final outing of the season on Sunday in the Festival of Sport at Stanhope, will have a new strip for next season and any potential sponsors are invited to contact Dave Homewood at the address below. Off the pitch, Ciaran McQuillan is to remain as Fixture Secretary and Keith Cornell is continuing with his fantastic sponsorship support that is expected to include new tracksuits for the Saturday firsts. Boosted by the re-election en bloc of the Executive Committee at last week’s AGM, The Patron concluded: “We have five teams raring to go and I expect them all to be up there challenging for honours. I want to see the smiles back on all our faces and the only way to do that is to all pull together for the common cause”. Patron’s Invitation Dinner a huge success

The club said goodbye to referee Mr John Roffey on Friday evening  with a small presentation to remember us by. John has moved to Tuckton, near Bournemouth to be with his partner Sue and insists he has made a clean break from football. Vice President Carlton Wynter, semi-sober,  made the presentation on behalf of the club.

Former goalkeeping stalwart John Kelly handed over the new Tommy Stafford Memorial Cup to Martyn Dalby who won the Youth Clubman of the Year accolade for the second year running (picture on Youth Football tab).

Vice President Kelly said “What a fantastic night and I am sure Martyn is going to be a credit to the Green for many years to come. To be amongst such celebrated company and to honour Tommy in this way is so special to me”.

Sue Smith and John Roffey who returned to Ashford for Friday’s event

Patron Dave Homewood thanked all who attended and spoke of the respect that both the late Tommy Stafford and the very much active John Roffey earned with their attitude and willingness to help others. Even players John had carded gave him a standing ovation!

Amongst those in attendance were Vice Presidents Kelly, Wynter, Dave Andrews, Terry Perk, Ian Holloway, Chris Watson, Jamie Allan; new Saturday first manager Dave Smith, club captain Glenn Mackett and long-serving current players Lee Milton and Lee Gilham

Former Bromley Green man Gary Williams has made contact from Finland where he currently coaches the women’s youth team for Helsinki Jalkopallo Klubi. After ten years of playing and coaching in the USA, Gary and his wife Nora returned to Europe and recently had an addition to the family, a son, Henri.Gary is also contemplating a return to his roots as he misses his family here but he wonders what has happened to the legendary BG youth programme: “In my day The Green was THE youth club to play for. I have so many fond memories”.He rates his highest point at The Green the winning of the Northern European Championship with the youth side in Germany“… that was something!”

Talking exclusively to The Green Lane,Patron Dave Homewood paid tribute to Williams, describing him as “…an example to all young players in dedication and application. The club is obviously proud of what he has gone on to achieve; it makes it all worthwhile really. Good to hear from you Gary and maybe in the not too distant future we will meet up again. It still applies mate: Once a Green boy, always a Green boy!

Regards to yourself and family from all at the club.”

True ‘Legends’ will be at Invitation Dinner

If you are decidedly irked by the improper and over use these days of the word ‘legend’, take solace from the fact that Friday’s Invitation Dinner will have a number of people that have made a significant contribution to local football and can accurately be described as such. Whilst only a small intimate evening is planned to mark the first presentation of the Tommy Stafford Memorial Cup to the Youth Clubman of the Year, local household names such as John Kelly, Carlton Wynter and referee John Roffey will be in attendance. These are true legends of the game: John, an extrovert yet brilliant keeper of yesteryear; Carlton, well he is simply unique; Mr Roffey, has retired from refereeing and moved away from the area but will travel back for the evening.

Speaking tonight to The Green Lane, The Patron described John Roffey as “An unselfish man who has been a credit to the game for so many years,” adding “… the least we can do is have one last chat, thank him and wish him well for the future. John officiated at a high level but loved his local refereeing and was humble enough to finish off the weekend with a youngsters game free of charge. Football in the area will not be same without him. The get-together is really about one dear departed former club captain and a man who both gives and earns respect from all genuine football lovers. Tommy Stafford and John Roffey – now we are talking about two real ‘legends’.”

Tuesday night headlines…

* Green remain in Kent County League Premier Division

* Steve Wilson says ‘yes’ to Saturday manager’s post

* Joe McQuillan: “There’s only one club I want to play for”

* Sponsors queue to support Green

Tonight’s KCL AGM saw the Green retain their Premier Division status and Chairman Stan Donald is absolutely thrilled. The scene is now set for new team boss Dave Smith to usher in a new era at the club.

Double delight came with the announcement tonight from the Swan Ground that stalwart Steve Wilson has agreed to take up the challenge of managing the Saturday Reserves. Patron Dave Homewood said “This is fantastic news and the prospect of Steve and Dave Smith working together to make Saturdays a success is an exciting prospect. We need to find Steve match day support but this is a huge move forward and I know he already has a few new names in mind for next term”.

Another great boost came for all the senior managers with goalkeeper Joe McQuillan committing his future to the Green and pledging to fight for a place in both first teams.  Patron Dave Homewood commented that “Joe has gone through a bad patch but he is part of the Bromley Green family. Along with Craig [Smith], Shaun [Dadd] and promising youngster Liam Wratten, we already have four keepers here for the long term and we are determined to keep them happy. There may of course be more to come but considering it is only June our managers are working hard behind the scenes to make sure everything is in place for the big kick off”.

We may have come out of a generally mediocre season but the the Green continue to be an attractive proposition to sponsors including a fabulous new strip for the Sunday Reserves and of course the continued support of Keith Cornell…watch this space for full details of the Green’s sponsors for the coming season

Thanks … go to Lee Ealham who is sponsoring the youth player of the year award

Thanks … go to Stan Donald who has made a generous donation towards a new Bill Mickelborough Memorial trophy

Gilham joins Sunday backroom team

Key defender Lee Gilham, who has missed the past season through injury, has joined the backroom management staff of the Sunday first team who are already preparing to regain their Sunday Premier crown. Patron Dave Homewood, tonight speaking exclusively to The Green Lane, said “The club will not be rushing Lee back into playing and the reality is that he will probably miss all of the coming season. He is still young and will I am sure be back; but for now we are happy that he is commiting himself to joining the Sunday senior management set-up. I have spoken with him tonight and he will shortly sit down with the Executive and we can discuss a role he feels comfortable with.” On the disappointment of last season, despite lifting the Bodkin Cup and Charity Cup, the Patron said it can be summed up in one word: ‘unacceptable’. But he added “…that is history and apportioning blame is a futile exercise and we are moving on rapidly now. With Mark Day also carrying on with his support role we have assembled a management team with several thousand appearances to their names!” With the majority of last season’s players staying, the priority now is to secure a couple of class signings that will give the club the edge again. Any prospective new signings can contact Dave Homewood on 07980869351 (davehomewood@bromleygreen.co.uk) or just turn up without obligation to training at the Swan Ground on Tuesday 1 July at 6.30pm.

Green future is bright

A less than distinguished season is now behind us and things are already starting to buzz again with players and managers eagerly planning for the new campaign. Dave Smith is relishing the challenge of getting the Saturday firsts back on track again while the Sunday seniors are, in the words of skipper Glenn Mackett, ‘absolutely delighted’ that a formidable management team of Dave Andrews, Terry Perk, Dave Homewood and Jamie Allan will be charged with driving the side back to former glories come September. The one gap to fill is the Saturday Reserves manager post with Steve Wilson understandably wanting to extend his playing career at the Green and he feels he cannot play and manage. Anyone interested in the role should contact Dave Homewood through the website at

www.bromleygreen.co.uk

Stan Donald receives county award

Congratulations to the club chairman and vice-president Stan Donald who received a long service award at the Kent County League’s annual dinner. It is well-deserved recognition for Stan who, as a former player, has assumed roles as secretary, treasurer and of course chairman.

Milton again top of the appearances

Loyal clubman Lee Milton once again clocked up more senior appearances (57) than any other player during the past season. Patron Dave Homewood commented: “Since he was a very young lad Lee has without question accepted the way the club runs and has been rewarded with a host of honours. The past season was not one to remember but Lee still played his part in two fine cup wins for the Sunday firsts. His willingness to play in any position in any of our sides sets an example to all those who want to choose when and where they play.”

Training for youth players

Steve Mailey wishes to emphasise that all youth squad players are expected to train on Tuesdays even though the league season is completed. As usual, this Tuesday training is between 5.30 and 7pm.

Long-serving Green midfielder David Cook has moved up the coast from Hythe Town to try his hand at Ryman League football with Folkestone Invicta. David had a pre-season at the Buzzlines last year before being a major force in Hythe’s chase for honours. With Invicta rebuilding after relegation, the Green wish him every success at this higher level.

“Bromley Green Football Club is pleased to announce that Mr David Smith has tonight been offered, and accepted, the post of Saturday First Team Manager for the coming season. Mr Smith will work closely with other team managers in implementing the Club policy and returning the Saturday senior side to its former status. There were other strong candidates but at this juncture the Club is of the opinion that Mr Smith, with his coaching badges and vast experience, has the pedigree to bring the side stability and success. Mr Smith will assume his duties with immediate effect and we wish him a long and happy association with the Green”.

The Green’s restructure began in earnest with the appointment of former Lydd stalwart Dave Smith as the new Saturday first team boss. Former central defender Dave, who also had notable success at the now demised Houchin FC, was the unanimous choice of senior players within the Club and the Executive Committee.

Applications invited for managerial posts

Applications are invited for the posts of Saturday Reserves team manager and Sunday First team manager as the Club continues to look for a fresh start, with new ideas and players willing to commit themselves to the cause. Enquiries should go through the Patron, Dave Homewood, who told The Green Linetonight “Current players who want to commit themselves to the Club, and I emphasise ‘Club’, are cordially invited to stay but there is no denying we need fresh blood as we have become stale both on and off the pitch. These are two fantastic opportunities for up and coming managers who want to make a name for themselves. The Saturday boys came so close to the title before running out of steam and suffering from weddings and injuries in the last few weeks of the season while the Sunday senior squad is still awesome when all the lads are there. We have senior players in the Club to provide support to new managers but we are seeking those with the bottle to take responsibility and have the drive to get us buzzing again. We are interested in talking [without obligation] to anyone, whether experienced or not, who feels they fit the bill”. In the first instance, to express an interest, please email

Mixed ending to a mixed season

Winning the Bodkin Cup and Ashford Charity Trophy would by most people’s standards represent a successful season. However, the relinquishing of the title after so many years at the top is a bitter pill to swallow and Sunday’s labouring performance in a 5-1 home defeat by our good friends Ashford Cavaliers showed just how much work needs to be done to regain our crown. We have lost our edge in recent weeks and the visitors fully deserved the maximum points with a Craig Southen goal our only consolation.

On the far pitch, the seconds recorded a 4-0 win over The Albion (Ashley Webster 2, Chris Burden and Shaun Dadd from the penalty spot)

My thanks to all those who helped with the BBQ on Sunday

Lee Ealham insists he wants to carry on playing for the Green next year after announcing his retirement from Kent League football. To read about Ealey’s career, go to

All welcome!

A drink and a bite to eat on Sunday at the ground with everybody welcome. The gates open at 8am and I hope to see all players, officials and friends of the Club. My thanks to Steve Mailey who has taken charge of the BBQ while I am at work today (Saturday). U15s please all come along and help … I will pay for your food! Dave

Last Day of an indifferent campaign … Green teams finish at home then it’s full steam ahead for next season

Two home games this Sunday (against Ashford Cavaliers and The Albion respectively) complete a season that has had more downs than ups. It certainly hasn’t been boring though and if I’m honest much of it hasn’t been enjoyable either. That has to change, and it will. The Executive will be making announcements after Monday’s meeting and will be asking existing and new members to get us back on track again both on and off the field. Our visitors, managed by Steve Mailey, are staying for a pint on Sunday, so although the result is of little consequence to either team let’s try and end the season with a smile on our faces.

Bethersden complete historic double

Thursday nights 5-3 defeat at Bethersden sums up the Green’s unacceptable league campaign while for the Den it represents a fantastic double. I honestly cannot remember the last time any side recorded two league victories over us in the Premier. Scorers were Danny Valler, Craig Southen and Glenn Mackett. Phil Wedge, standing in as manager, reports that Tommy Lockett was sent off for violent conduct. Congratulations to Bethersden and of course Market who won the league; but once Sunday’s now meaningless home game with Ashford Cavaliers is out of the way it will be time for some serious thinking. Kick off on Sunday is at 10.30 while on the far pitch the reserves round their season off with a home game against The Albion.  Hopefully the U15s, themselves ending the season on a high, are organising a barbeque to finish what has been a long season of mixed fortunes.

Congratulations to Gary Gibbs who has been awarded the Manager of the Month for April. We will present the award to Gary at an appropriate occasion.

Ashford Dynamo call Tuesday night game off

Ashford Dynamo, the whipping boys of the Premier Division, have called Tuesday evening’s game off as they can’t raise a side. Thursday’s game at Bethersden is still on.

Sunday: Green 3 Brewmaster 1 (T Lockett 2, L Milton)

The Green quite frankly were tetchy in the Sunday morning sunshine and, with little to play for, the glut of end-of-season fixtures do not hold their normal significance or cutting edge. Not a game to remember. The side is in action again on Tuesday at home to Ashford Dynamo and on Thursday away to Bethersden, both with 6.30 kick offs. Sunday’s home match with Ashford Cavaliers ends a season of mixed fortunes.

Under 15s reach Port Lympne sixes final but go down 1-0(report to follow on Youth Football tab)

Saturday night round-up (9pm 10 May 2008)

* Students come out top of class: University of Kent claimed the Reserves Division East title following their 4-2 win at Platt Reserves tonight

* Saturday Reserves end on a high with 6-1 hammering of Borden Village Reserves at the Swan Ground to finish third – (Prior, Milton, Kingwell 2, Mifsud, A Davies)

* Fixtures: Sunday home Brewmaster; Tuesday home Dynamo; Thursday away Bethersden; Sunday home Cavaliers with reserves also home to Albion

SUNDAY 18TH BARBECUE ON LAST DAY OF SEASON WHEN IT IS HOPED ALL PLAYERS WITHIN THE CLUB WILL COME AND ROUND THE SEASON OFF (Organisers are Aaron Neil, Jack Acott, Martyn Dalby)…AS ALWAYS, EVERYBODY WELCOME!

* Any player(s) still to vote for the Player of the Year awards, please see me at the ground either Sunday (11th or 18th) or Tuesday (13th). All the awards will be made at the Presentation Night on Friday 27 June at the Down Town Diner

Green win second major trophy in a fortnight

Kingers, Gazza and Hodges too hot too handle

BROMLEY GREEN 4 ASHFORD CAVALIERS 1

It has hardly been a vintage season by Green standards but we have still emerged with two out of three of the major domestic cups and congratulations go to Dave Andrews, Jamie Allan and all the squad for another professional performance that saw off a brave Cavaliers outfit. Cavaliers, until recently in with a shout of the league, played their part in a sporting and entertaining Ashford Charity Trophy final at a sun-drenched Homelands on Thursday night. Gary Mickelborough with a double and Pat Kingwell gave the Green a 3-1 interval advantage after Cavaliers had taken the lead with an early spot kick. In the second half apart from the odd flurry at the other end, noticeably with Sean Dadd saving well from Jake Symonds, it was a story of missed Green opportunities as Lee Milton produced a string of superb crosses from the left. As it was, a typical moment of class from Marcus Hodges, who clipped the ball home with his left foot, proved to be the only score of the second period. A fine all round display from the Green with John Lockett, Danny Valler and skipper Glenn Mackett as always giving everything for the team. Mickelborough, whose goals have once again been decisive, earned the man of the match accolade.  Two prestigious awards in less than a fortnight after such a traumatic season [that included the loss of Lee Gilham through injury] is a terrific endorsement of the teams resolve…well done lads!

Green: S Dadd; C Petts, D Valler, J Lockett, L Ealham, G Mickelborough, G Mackett, C Southen, L Milton, P Kingwell, M Hodges Subs: T Lockett, J Thomas, M Wedge (all played)

Mickelborough decider as title race hots up

Bromley Green Reserves 2 New Romney Reserves 1

As the business part of the season speeds towards its climax, the Green’s second string made sure the race for the Eastern Reserves Division title is going right to the wire after yet another absorbing evening clash with the Blues. In the early moments, the visitors in fact found themselves ahead when a bad bounce deceived the hapless Dan Noden and the ball rolled into a gaping goal. It appeared that the Green were in for one of those nights when first Stuart Prior with a header and then Steve Wilson with a long range thunderbolt rattled the goal frame during a bout of considerable pressure. Appeals for a penalty following a blatant foul on Anthony Davies were waved away and Glenn Mackett was booked for nothing in particular. One has to ask why no action was taken when Mackett himself was scythed down later in the game…a contingent of referees do seem to have one rule for some and one for ‘names’ and quite frankly it is becoming irksome.  Some referees argue that “Mackett lives by the sword”. Yes, he does, but when he is fouled, it is still a bloody free kick!  Let’s have the same rules for dishing out yellow cards applied to everyone refs, please. After half time, it was all Green with Tom Poyner, Gary Mickelborough and Jimmy Pickard going close. A dubious penalty (to even things up after the first half cock-up perhaps?) brought the Green level, with Prior hammering home off the underside of the crossbar. It was now the Green who looked the likely winners and Mickelborough, who should have netted a treble, duly obliged with a terrific solo run and finish. An entertaining encounter and with the Green still having to play Romney and the University, the destiny of the championship is still very much undecided. All the squad deserve praise for coming through a difficult test but Wilson once again takes the man of the match accolade.  Team manager Gary Gibbs said “This was an important win that keeps us right in there. Also I was so pleased to see many of the Under 15s down supporting the side”. On Saturday the boys are away to Oakwood Reserves while on Tuesday our old sparring partners, Lydd Town Reserves, come to the Swan Ground for another crucial league match.

Sunday ... three Green teams in action

Lee Ealham has added the returning Sean Skillett and the much-travelled Chris Gillam to the Sunday senior squad. A host of injuries and suspensions means they could both feature in this morning's home clash with Aldington (10.30 am kick off). The seconds make the short trip to local side Highfield with Phil Wedge predicting promotion at the first attempt since the move from the Folkestone League.  Rounding off a fascinating weekend of entertainment, the U15s get their league campaign under way with a home fixture against Whytecliff Rangers (2pm kick off). This is a big season for the boys as they move that step nearer to the senior set up and Patron Dave Homewood and Vice President Dave Andrews will be at the ground to talk to players and their parents.  Hopefully more seniors will support the side this season, especially at home matches.

First with the news: Saturday tea-time update (8.9.07)

Both Saturday sides have to settle for adraw

Sunday night snippets…

A weekend of mixed fortunes ended with the Under 15s winning 3-2 at home to Ashford Colts thanks to scores from George Wall (2) and Dan Churchley. In a match played in driving snow, the lads were 3-0 ahead and coasting but the visitors put up a brave show and forced a close finale (Steve Mailey’s report is on the Youth link).  Earlier the firsts were like the weather, the ref and the pitch – poor! Bethersden seemed sharper and full of running off the ball as we let a 4-2 lead slip and finished 5-4 losers. Congratulations to the villagers on a well-earned win but for the Green this simply is not good enough. Craig Southen 2, Glenn Mackett and Marcus Hodges netted for the Green who can now, as they say, ‘concentrate on the cups’.  First up are old rivals Kennington who visit us next Sunday in the semi final of the Bodkin Cup (10.30am). Up at The Ridge, Phil Wedge’s charges are still eyeing up a promotion spot after a 5-1 defeat of The Albion. A solid all-round team performance with Richard Floyd and Jason Thomas impressing. Netting for the Green, who have no fixture next Sunday, were Ashley Webster 2, Matt Wedge 2, and Ricky Milton from the penalty spot.

SATURDAY NIGHT UPDATE…

Edgy Green take early lead but second half collapse is costly

Bromley Green 1 Crockenhill 3

A coolly taken goal by Craig Southen in the first half lured the Green into thinking next to bottom Crocks were there for the taking but it was to all go wrong after the turn round. Two fine stops by Joseph McQuillan kept the home team in front but one always felt the next goal was going to be decisive. And so it was with the visitors not only levelling but going on to enjoy large periods of possession that culminated with two more goals to seal an unexpected win.  Despite the setback, there were positives with the impromptu centre back pairing of Terry Perk and Ryan Smith doing enough to suggest that with regular games together a sound understanding could be formed. As always Mackett, Southen and Reed played with plenty of passion but with a pile of injuries and no help from above it proved to be yet another day to forget. Compounding the misery, Milton Athletic bagged three points with a 2-0 success against Coney Hall. Next week the side travels to meet Fleet Leisure.

Steve Wilson reports on the Reserves 2-0 win at Bearsted

Hi Dave
We won 2-0 today; goalscorers were anthony davies and luke stanley;
we started brightly and continued the same way throughout the game,
with Bearsted’s keeper playing a blinder. The whole team played really well
and we should have won 4 or 5 nil but 2 was enough and 3 pts this time
of the season was crucial. Considering Bearsted played 3 or 4 first teamers
the performance was superb. Let’s hope we play like that on Tuesday night
c u soon cheers

Midweek update

It’s crunch time for Green teams

The next month is packed with crucial fixtures as the Green’s senior sides battle for priceless points for differing reasons. At the Swan Ground on Saturday, the firsts need to rise above all their injury and suspension miseries against second from bottom Crockenhill and bag the three points that will virtually ensure safety. Hopefully there will be a good turn-out to give the lads a boost as we approach the finale of a trying campaign; and who knows, perhaps we will enjoy that little bit of luck that has eluded us all season. Kick off is at 2.45pm. Also searching a maximum are the seconds who have a difficult match at Bearsted as they aim to push towards the title. Tuesday night (6.30pm) could well be a defining time as our old friends from New Romney visit for another virtual six-pointer and, with the Uni boys having two vacant weeks, there is a real opportunity to close the gap at the top.

In the Premier Division, Dave Andrews knows his Sunday firsts will need to be at their best to thwart visiting Bethersden with the villagers buoyed by a crushing of title favourites Ashford Cavaliers in last week’s Premier Cup final at Reachfields. Meanwhile, the Sunday Reserves have an away local derby with The Albion. Both games kick off at 10.30am.

The Under 15s hope to return to action with a home tussle against Ashford Colts (2.00pm) as they endeavour to consolidate their more than respectable placing in the East Kent Youth League table.

Saturday night…

Bastard computer crashed again after spending ages compiling a round-up that included up to date tables… losing the will to live!  Can’t redo it all again…

Basically, Uni Res beat Borden Res 1-0 to go 13 points clear but we have 5 games in hand and have dropped less points than any of our main rivals in the Eastern Reserves Division

Saturday 10am update

Reserves game at New Romney is OFF

Today’s crucial Kent County League Reserves Division East fixture between New Romney Reserves and Bromley Green Reserves has been called off with the Blues pitch deemed too wet. Perhaps we are in for yet another classic evening ‘decider’ to mirror so many meetings in the past between the two clubs both at first and second team level.

MATCH ABANDONED IN CONTROVERSY

In a game in which phil wedge’s boys went looking to avenge their semi final elimination, the green took the game by the horns from the start and were all over the opposition, with gary mickelborough looking livley up front and james major and lee gilbert looking solid at the back .We were in complete control till a mistake by ricky milto allowed churchills to sneak ahead via a deflected shot. The greens response was to up the tempo of the game which payed dividends 15minutes later with the ever threatening mickelborough slotting home, bouyed by this the lads moved up another gear and went close on several more occasions. But with only 5 minutes of the 1st half left the green were awarded a penalty after one of the churchills players wanted to swap shirts early with robbie bowyer. What resulted from that can only be described as A DISGRACE TO FOOTBALL. Green so near but season of woe continues

Staplehurst 3 Bromley Green 2

After trailing 1-0 at the interval and looking anything but organised during the first period, the Green proceeded to dominate for long spells with the wind in their favour and seemed set to lift the cup when taking a 2-1 lead with just nine minutes remaining. However, these are not normal times for the club and somehow the villagers capitalised on their ball over top tactics to snatch a dramatic victory. With a host of players unavailable through ineligibility and injury, it was a strange line-up that took the field, but nevertheless each player did their best on a poor pitch. Stuart Daniel notched both the Green goals but I think we have all accepted the gods are against us at the moment. It doesn’t seem a particularly ‘funny old game’; but that’s football and it will change.

I would like to thank all those who braved the bitterly cold elements to support the club on Good Friday. The final had a miserable ending but how pleasing to see so many present and past Bromley Green supporters there. Let’s hope next year we can return and put things right!

Peter Intrieri reflects on another trying weekend

What was believed to be a crucial weekend for the Green, Both Ciaran and Peter felt very confident of a positive outcome of the 2 games. A very poor display on Friday in The Weald Of Kent was just not acceptable against a very ordinary basic opposition.

Both Managers were surprised to see many faces that had not been around the last few weeks through injury. This led us to believe that we had a strong squad which gave us many selection headaches as all players said they were fit. Hindsight is a very powerful thing to have in your locker, as quite clearly the squad was not fully fit so selection would have been different.

Not to be deterred the Green after a poor display found themselves leading 2-1 with only 7 minutes left but very basic errors let the lively P.West run rings round our defence with the Green going down 3-2.

A day to forget as Staplehurst And Monarchs sit at the bottom of Div 1 East.

The following day the Green travelled to Sheerness in horrendously cold windy conditions, which again left no place for football. To be let down by half of the final team from the previous day totally bemused Ciaran and I. 19 players at 9.00am to be left with just 10 at midday beggars belief but this is what has happened since November.

Playing against the wind in the first half and conceding early made it an uphill battle from the off, but the green should have gone in at least 3-1 up with Loyal club Captain Glenn Mackett doing his utmost for a victory . Nevertheless only down 1-0 the lads came in positive that the second half would reap us some reward. How untrue as once again as basic errors and fatigue left us with nothing and losing 3-0.

Without the reserve game being called off it would have been interesting as both Managers would of had to play.

Team: Craig Smith, Dan Cheeseman, Ryan Smith, Anthony Davies, Terry Perk, Shaun Gibbs, Glenn Mackett, Lee Milton, Kevin Barret, Gary Mickelbrough, Ashley Webster. Subs all used Joe Mcquillan Gary Gibbs

Our thanks to Gary Gibbs Senior for his support for this game and future games.

P Intrieri (Co-Manager)

Meanwhile Cookie and Kingers are doing well at Hythe who recorded a win at Croydon to keep in the Kent League title race while Marcus Hodges, who opened the scoring against Tunbridge Wells in a 3-1 victory, is making a huge impact at Faversham.

Next Saturday the Green welcome Fleet Leisure to the Swan Ground while the seconds have a top of the table clash with old friends New Romney Reserves down the Avenue.

Saturday 6am update

Overnight rain causes fixtures doubt

The overnight rain means the home games with Kennington this Saturday and Sunday are doubtful. An inspection is being made this morning by Dave Andrews and if and when The Green Lane has any information, we will publish details. Supporters planning to watch at the Swan Ground or travel to Sheerness East to watch the first team are advised to check with the respective team manager before setting out. The Reserves game at The Ridge scheduled for Sunday must also be rated very doubtful. Again contact Phil Wedge the manager or if we have any news we will publish it.

Weald Final reflection to follow…

Good Friday update…

Kick off is at 3.15pm.  Supporters wanting a lift should be at The Albert pub at the top of the town by 1.30pm.

Tomorrow the firsts are at Sheerness East while the seconds entertain Kennington Reserves

After an unconvincing opening twenty minutes, during which the Street should have scored on at least three occasions, the Green gradually assumed control of this Ashford Charity tie played on a quagmire of a pitch. Although striker Tommy Lockett rapped a post, the Green were rarely a threat during the opening exchanges while at the other end dangerous ex-Green forward Tom Wilmshurst failed to take advantage of gilt-edged chances. With little to enthuse over for the visitors and the Street sensing a major upset, the match suddenly turned on a moment of extravagant brilliance by the in-form Gary Mickelborough, whose thunderbolt from outside the box left both sides stunned. It was indeed the performances of Mickelborough and keeper Joseph McQuillan, who pulled off two terrific saves in the mud, that illustrated why the Green camp remains positive over the rebuilding that has been forced upon them. The slender lead at half time was perhaps more than the Green deserved but when Mickelborough broke through again to slot home early in the second period the contest was effectively over. Plenty of endeavour from both sides, with Valler and Poyner putting in useful displays at the back for the Green and Pettit and Ketley steady for the home side, made for an entertaining game despite the conditions and, after two further superb saves by McQuillan, there was time for one more moment of sublime skill. Picking the ball up wide on the left, substitute Terry Perk cut in and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner. The three-goal margin was harsh on the Street but the Green, with Ealham and Mackett as ever committed to the cause, issued a lesson on taking chances whilst showing great resilience in keeping a blank sheet. The win sets up a mouthwatering home tie with locals Albion in the semi finals. Next Sunday Dave Andrews hopes to have Marcus Hodges, absent today through family illness, leading the line against Kennington in the Bodkin Cup semi final at the Swan Ground.

Green: Joseph McQuillan; Chris Petts, Sean Skillett, Danny Valler, Tom Poyner, Gary Mickelborough, Glen Mackett, Lee Ealham, Lee Milton, Tommy Lockett, Kevin Barrett. Subs: Matt Wedge, Ryan Holloway, Terry Perk

Today’s home reserve game with Albion was called off after an 8am pitch inspection. Meanwhile Market won 2-1 against Brewmaster while Cavaliers game with Bethersden fell foul to the overnight rain.

Dave Homewood reports from the Swan Ground

Pickard continues his scoring spree

Bromley Green Reserves 6 Oakwood Reserves 0

An opening long-range shot by captain Jim Pickard, who has hit a rich vein of scoring, set the Green on their way to maximum points at the Swan Ground on Saturday and kept the four-horse race for the title well and truly bubbling. Pickard, making his 14th league appearance of the campaign, is thankfully steering clear of the injury blight that has hampered his career at the club in recent seasons. Oakwood in all honestly were unconvincing and the game was effectively finished as a contest when the ever-lively Gary Mickelborough notched a typical hat trick; demonstrating once again that he represents the difference between winning leagues and being also-rans. With Micky Davies yet again nominating himself as man of the match, and the experienced Steve Wilson comfortably controlling the back line, the result was never in doubt and further scores from Stuart Prior and substitute Tom Poyner rounded off the scoring. A sporting affair very well officiated by Mr G Hoare.

Green: D Noden; G Gibbs, S Wilson, A Bond, M Davies, J Pickard, S Gibbs, C Southen, H Hrehorow, G Mickelborough, S Prior. Subs: K Barrett, T Poyner, R Brand

Next week the seconds are hosts to local rivals Kennington in another vital league match (2.45pm).

Ciaran McQuillan talks exclusively to The Green Lane

We played at home for the first time in a month against a very useful Norton team and were duly put to the sword from the first minute. It certainly appears to go against you when things aren’t going your way because a blatant penalty was waved away when Stuart Daniel was put clean through which might have resulted in a different outcome on the game if awarded. However, the referee obviously didn’t fancy sending off the guilty Norton defender (as should have been the case as per rules) so ignored all claims for a penalty and booked a Green player for having the audacity for questioning the decision. Even the Norton defender concerned apologised for the challenge. Norton scored after a minute and with the Green rarely making any inroads into the visitors half, you felt it was only a matter of time before the league leaders scored again. The much over-used main pitch was to be our undoing on the second Norton goal when Joseph McQuillan received a back pass from Ryan Smith only for the ball to hit a divot, strike the hapless keeper on the left knee and deflect into the path of a grateful opponent. We then lost Buster Beaney through a recurring injury and with that all hopes of a comeback diminished. More worryingly, Buster may not be available for the Weald of Kent Cup Final on Good Friday. The second half produced some excellent football from both sides but with Norton having pace and guile to burn it was always going to be an uphill battle. Craig Southen was struggling with a back injury and Stuart Daniel was also carrying a knock but both played on despite been restricted. Norton were 4 up when James Barham produced a stunning strike from 30 yards to bring some cheer to the beleaguered Green camp. Norton then equalled that feat with a move that was both stunning and lethal in its execution. Craig Smith then had a goal disallowed for offside after Tommy Lockett had struck the bar from the edge of the box. Norton then made it six to complete the sequence. James Barham was sent off for his second bookable offence, although his first for a two-footed lunge was enough to warrant a straight red. Tommy Lockett was lucky to stay on the pitch when he was involved in an unsavoury incident which was a shame because his attitude has been second to none of late. All the players have to be commended for their attitude when, quite frankly their backs are against a wall.

Bodkin Cup hopes still alive

Wye 2 Bromley Green 7

In the most testing season the Green’s Sunday seniors have endured for many a year, there is still hope of silverware after this comprehensive victory over the brave villagers. With the line-up changing drastically every week, it is difficult for the side to gain any continuity but there was enough experience in the side to set up a semi-final with Kennington. Glenn Mackett, with two spot kicks, Gary Mickelborough 2, Tommy Lockett, Danny Valler and Marcus Hodges were the marksmen; while there was an encouraging run-out for substitute Jamie Dobbin. Talking to The Green Line, assistant manager Mark Day said there are still real problems with the stability of the defence. “In my day we had to do what the manager said, players just don’t seem to listen these days and apply basics; but credit to the lads that are there every week. It is going to be hard but we have not given up on the league yet”. Next Sunday the boys travel to meet Hamstreet in the Ashford Charity Trophy and will be hoping for the return of Leon Reed, Craig Southen, John Lockett and Kevin Barrett. Green: J McQuillan; D Valler, C Petts, S Skillett, L Gilbert, T Poyner, G Mickelborough, G Mackett, L Ealham, M Hodges, T Lockett. Sub: J Dobbin Jimmy Pickard netted the Saturday Reserves consolation goal in the 2-1 defeat at Bly Spartan Reserves. This Saturday the side face Oakwood Reserves at the Swan Ground with a 2.45pm kick off whilst the firsts have no fixture at the time of writing.

Under 15s comfortable win at The Stadium

Steve Mailey reports to The Green Lane

Dynamo United 0 2 Bromley Green

For reasons unknown to me, we travelled to Folkestone with just 11 players. Those present put in a great team display as we looked to avenge the heavy defeat handed to us the last time we met. Murrell took centre stage at the heart of defence again, dealing with every single ball! That stability is passed through the side, as Neil put in a top central showing against some bigger lads. Seeing certain players grow in confidence is very pleasing, with Blowers and Cahalane again threatening from wide. We went in front through Neil, who reacted first from a corner. The lead was extended thanks to another delivery from Blowers. Other chances came and our effort possibly deserved a bigger margin. At the other end, we restricted Dynamo to just a few chances – but keeper Martyn Dalby dealt with them well, including a superb save which actually looked impossible! Dalby’s display earned him Man of the Match. I can’t ask for more than what the boys are giving (except a sub or two!), so well done to all. Dalby / Bugden / Hurst / Murrell / Barton / Cahalane / Neil / Wojtowicz / Blowers / Churchley / Pierzchala Goals: Neil / Blowers No Subs

Saturday evening (8.3.08) update

Not a good day for the Green with the firsts losing 6-1 at home to champions-elect Norton Sports and the seconds going down 2-1 at close rivals Bly Spartans Reserves. Congratulations to Marcus Hodges who hit a hat trick for Faversham in their 6-1 win at Sevenoaks. David Cook also found the net but Hythe slipped up 2-1 at home to Beckenham. For tomorrow’s Bodkin Cup tie at Wye, Dave Andrews has Lee Gilham, Craig Southen, Leon Reed and Kevin Barrett all missing. The seconds have no game while the Under 15s are meeting 12.45 at the ground for the trip to Cheriton.

Wednesday night update…

Gilham Shock: Key defender is back in plaster

Saturday night update

Long-serving central defender Lee Gilham is back in plaster, effectively meaning he has little chance of registering any meaningful contribution throughout the whole of the 2007-08 season. This is terrible news for the player and the Green as a club and Vice President Ciaran McQuillan summed up the mood at the moment when he lamented “Just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse!”  Patron Dave Homewood said “We all feel for Lee  who is much loved at this club; quite what he has done to deserve this lousy deal is beyond me.  Lee is one of those like the Miltons and the Macketts of this world, that when the going gets tough he wants to be in there wearing his Green shirt with pride.  We have missed him sorely both Saturdays and Sundays and I know he will be angry at missing out on trying to help his mates rescue something from a frustrating season. All we can do is wish him a full recovery however long it finally takes”.

A defiant Peter Intrieri talks to The Green Lane

Dave report as follows:

On a very sunny blustery day the much-changed Green firsts battled out a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Rusthall. Early signs showed that this game was not going to be easy as Rusthall dominated from the off and only an array of errors allowed the home side to take the lead with a well taken goal. Not to be deterred the green came very close through Stu Daniel, who broke clear just putting the ball wide. The green then lost their centre half, Lee Gilham on his return back from a lengthy injury. Left back Ryan Holloway was then drafted into the middle and was an inspiration to others as the green broke clear for Tommy Lockett to equalise. A thunderous 25 yarder gave Joe McQuillan no chance 2-1 Rusthall. With the wind playing its part Craig Southen looked up and swung in a cross that landed in the top right hand corner. 2-2. With minutes remaining in the first half a blatant offside goal was scored by Rusthall 3-2. With an encouraging half time talk, the lads were ready for the challenge and went out very upbeat and confident of getting something from the game. This never happened and 15 minutes from time it was 4-2 to Rusthall after another basic error. Pick of Rusthall were the two front men with new signing Ross Cable dominating the game. With the possibility of only 9 players on Friday evening and the debuts of numerous youngsters were a plus. There are not many teams that leave here with many points.

Many thanks to Rusthall FC for their hospitality and friendly welcome.

The club now needs to stick together on all fronts to help the first team avoid the drop as they are now in a relegation battle.

Preview from Sunday Reserves Manager

In what can only be described as a must win game, the Sunday Reserves look forward to the visit to the swan centre of Egerton. Manager Phil Wedge is boosted by the return of Ryan Holloway, Matty Wedge & James Major; but Ash Webster will still be missing with Tom Poyner being drafted back into first team action these are testing times for both Sunday teams. All support welcome, come and cheer your boys to win, kick off 10-30. Phil.

The managers have their say…

Phil Wedge writes exclusively for The Green Lane

Manager Phil Wedge had nothing but praise for 9 men Green as they lost 1-0 to Shadoxhurst in the Sheber Cup. Shadoxhurst fielding a team of glory hunters were put under pressure from the kick off, with Chris Burden going close on several occasions.

Greens pressure paid dividends when we were awarded a penalty, only for the usually dependable Ricky Milton to put wide. With scores level at 0-0 at the interval Green went into the second half with confidence, but with 60 minutes one single lapse in concentration proved to be our undoing.

With extra time possible Wedge went for broke and pushed extra men forward but alas it wasn’t to be. Final result Bromley Green 0 Glory hunters 1. Man of the match Sean Dadd. Regards Phil.

Ciaran McQuillan writes exclusively for The Green Lane

It was never going to be easy at Norton on Saturday & so it proved to be as the hosts eventually ran out convincing 8-2 winners. For the first 40 minutes we held our own & actually took the lead via a fine strike from the superb Mark Bond, but you always had this horrible feeling that Norton had the pace & firepower to react to this setback. Losing Ashley Webster early on to a terrible lunge from the Norton skipper didn't help but it was basic schoolboy errors that led to the equaliser. Time & again we gave the ball away too cheaply & we were punished at the back post after a ball was cut across the six-yard box. Tommy Lockett, who was on for the injured Webster then picked up an injury which meant he had to lumber through the game because Mark Mason was taken off following a collision in the oppositions penalty area. It was during Mason's period of treatment that Norton took the lead, once again, pace being our undoing.
A third goal on the stroke of half time was cruel & visibly knocked the stuffing out of a lot of the players & it curtains as far as the game was concerned.
With Joseph McQuillan on for Mark Mason the second half was a gutsy display but with Glenn Mackett, Buster Beaney & Lockett carrying injuries it was a bit like lambs to the slaughter as the Faversham side pounced on their wounded prey. Lee Milton scored from the edge of the box to make it 5-2, but 3 late strikes sealed our fate.
Another no show meant we only had 2 subs & some players quite frankly don't even have the courtesy to answer messages but will probably expect to be picked for the Cup final.
Next week we have another tough trip away to Rusthall.
Peter & I would like to thank the four senior players who have remained with the squad through these difficult times & all those who have had to come in & try & bail us out of the shit.

Team: Craig Smith, Dan Cheeseman, Mark Bond, Buster Beaney, Sean Skillett, Lee Milton, Leon Reed, Craig Southen, Mark Mason, Glenn Mackett, Ashley Webster. Subs: Tommy Lockett, Joseph McQuillan

Prior and Poyner secure the points but Gibbs unhappy with standards

A goal apiece from Stuart Prior and Tom Poyner against mediocre Larkfield & New Hythe Reserves kept the Green well on target to recapture the Eastern Reserves Division title but manager Gary Gibbs told the The Green Lane that this was far from a good performance.

Mickelborough again the key with timely double

Gary Mickelborough is hitting his best form just at the right time as the Green have stormed back into hot contention for the Sunday League title after looking somewhat disheveled until just a few weeks ago. The current Player of the Season notched the two goals that not only sunk local rivals Kennington but also now see the Green right in the mix as the race for the finishing line begins in earnest. Dave Andrews told The Green Lane he is determined to keep the championship at the club despite the docking of three points by the league. "Every week is a cup final for us now, the spirit in the camp is terrific. Win every game and we win the league...we've done it before, so why not?  In reality I think it is going to go to the wire this year. But don't back against us!"  Only injuries to key players seems likely to prevent the Green from hitting their usual end of season high notes but with some very useful reserves waiting to grab their chance, the management team of Andrews, Jamie Allan and Mark Day are quietly confident. This week the boys have another tough test at Aldington.

Green answer their critics as Hodges hits four

Bromley Green 7 Market 0

Title holders Green made a mockery of those who have written them off for this season's crown by strolling to this win on Sunday that opens the race wide open again with a cluster of sides all in with a shout. A great squad effort with Marcus Hodges claiming a personal tally of four and the others coming from Lee Milton and substitute pair Kevin Barrett and Tom Poyner. Next Sunday the boys are at Kennington and there will be fitness tests for Glenn Mackett, Lee Gilham and John Lockett.

Saturday night update

Bearsted 3 Bromley Green 1

Peter Intrieri talks exclusively to The Green Lane...

A bitterly cold day at Bearsted saw the Green's 1st XI as unlucky losers. A slow start by the Green who really never got out of first gear in the first half were bemused by the lack of consistency by the man in black who booked our players for petty offences yet seem to miss three horrendous tackles by the Bearsted number seven. Losing Glenn Mackett after only 20 minutes did not deter the spirit of the Green, but it was a basic error that let Bearsted in with only minutes left in the first half.

After only 10 minutes of the restart Bearsted go in front 2 - 0 through very impressive use of the wings for a simple tap in. Then out of nowhere the green show true character and completely dominate the game with some slick football and an array of sitters missed. It was left to the consistent Buster Beaney to notch a powerful Ronaldo like strike of 25 yards to set alarm bells ringing in the home camp. The man in black then strikes again to reduce the Green to 10 players, sending off Charlie Clarke, however not to be deterred chances by the Green should have salvaged a point, until the last 2 minutes when a penalty was awarded leaving the result 3 - 1.

The Green were missing Steve Harris and Stu Daniels while a player saying he would turn up just did not. We stay positive in our quest for survival and do not worry about what is going on elsewhere.

Craig Smith, Barry Beaney, Shaun Skillet, Dan Cheeseman, Charlie Clarke, Lee Milton, Ashley Webster, Leon Reed, Craig Southen, Glenn Mackett, Joe Mifsud.

Stephen Wilson talks exclusively to The Green Lane
After last weeks disappointment against Lenham
we really had to pick ourselves up to keep
ourselves in the title shout, and the boys responded superbly with a 5 nil drubbing against an aggressive Otford side.
Stuart prior grabbing a superb hatrick also Jim Pickard being pushed into midfield getting on the scoresheet and Kevin Barrett also scoring.
The whole team performed well, in particular vice president Lee Lurch Williams who had an absolute storming game in the midfield.
Considering key players have been taken by the
first team recently the spirit and depth of the squad has been superb.

Green boosted by BJ Lockett return

Bromley Green 3 Bliby 1

The Green at last returned to some semblance of their true form with this hard-earned Bodkin Cup victory over Bliby at the Swan Ground to book a quarter final clash with Wye. Dave Andrews, disappointed that two senior players just did not turn up, was nevertheless full of praise for his side and with cup and league honours still to fight for he feels the lads are 'up for it'. Speaking exclusively to The Green Lane,Andrews is looking forward to next week's crucial match with Market: "I thought we fought well for each other today with everyone giving 110%, captain Craig Southen was back to his magnificent best, the return of BJ was a real boost and next week I have Leon Reed and club skipper Glenn Mackett available again". Bliby are a useful outfit and played their part in an entertaining game but goals from BJ Lockett and back to form Gary Mickelborough (2) saw the Green through. On the injury front, Kevin Barrett is carrying a knock while key defender Lee Gilham is according to Andrews "...only a few weeks away now".

Marcus Hodges, who has ended his brief spell at Hythe, made an immediate impact for Faversham on Saturday, netting their late winner to gain three valuable Kent League points

Bromley Green Sunday Reserves went down 3-2 away to Crusader, a result which severely dents their title hopes. Phil Wedge's team have not won since 16 December and their luck did not change today when they rattled the woodwork on several occasions. Lee Gilbert enjoyed a good game on his return to the Green whose consolation goals were provided by Leon Reed and Ashley Webster.

More penalty shoot-out heartbreak for Res

Green into Weald showpiece yet again

All the details this Saturday night ...

Milton and Harris sink brave Kennington

Bromley Green 3 Kennington 2
Ciaran McQuillan reports exclusively to The Green Lane
On a beautiful sun-drenched February afternoon (the wreck of a car still smouldering on the far pitch added to the effect) the much re-vamped Saturday first XI just about secured their place in the final of the prestigious Weald of Kent Cup final on Good Friday at Tenterden. Mark Bond opened the scoring with a thunderous header that unfortunately gave the visitors an early lead. Lee Milton finished off a slick move with aplomb to equalise only for Sam Cridland to edge Kennington ahead again, the stalwart left footer following up on a loose ball in the Green penalty box. Steve Harris restored parity before the break with a close range header. There wasn't much to choose between the sides in the second half but it was Harris who eventually secured the victory with a miscued shot that deceived Kennington's burly shot-stopper James Hayden. Both sides created chances that could have taken the tie either way but the Green hung on to record their second win on the bounce. A lot of credit must go to the Kennington team for a stirling performance that belies their position in the Eastern section of the County League. Loyal defender Mark Bond was the pick of the Green and the lads’ fantastic resolve to answer their critics has been duly rewarded with a place in the areas major showpiece. On a sad note, Peter and I find it very disturbing that an ex-Green manager is still attempting to lure players away from the club during the course of a season.

Green seconds miss out in penalty shoot-out cup thriller

Lenham 3 Bromley Green Reserves 3 (aet)

For the second successive weekend a Green reserve team went out of a cup competition after the dreaded penalty shoot-out. The sides were locked at 2-2 after ninety minutes in this thrilling Ashford Charity Cup tie but the Green were almost there with a 3-2 advantage just seconds from the end of extra time. The Wanderers scrambled a leveller and again we made a mess of the spot kick deciders, prompting manager Gary Gibbs to say “It was a good game of football on a poor pitch, their keeper was superb, but the final result we will just have to put down as one of those things”. The Green’s goals came from Luke Stanley, Kevin Barrett and a deflected effort by Stuart Prior.

Sladden resigns due to work commitments

Young Under 15 coach Rupert Sladden has been forced to relinquish his post due to work commitments. Speaking exclusively to The Green Lane, Sladden said he could no longer do the job justice with his work making it almost impossible to attend matches and training sessions. Patron Dave Homewood thanked Sladden for his work on behalf of the club and hoped the former Millwall man would return when circumstances allow: "Rupert is like the rest of us, he has to work to pay his way in life; sadly Bromley Green cannot meet his wages and we have to accept that his career comes first. We all wish him well and I am sure he will be back home with us in the future in some capacity".

Double cup woe for Sunday lads

Peter Intrieri speaks exclusively to The Green Lane

Dave

On a very bitterly cold day in Milton, the Green players showed what could be achieved if chances were taken.

A very dogged affair between the two sides where the Green started very slowly, but after a while started to play the better football and were rewarded with a spectacular finish by the very lively Ashley Webster.

With the first half nearing its end it looked like a job well done but a late corner with a poor clearance gifted Milton with an equaliser. In the second half the home side started well but with the introduction and welcomed return of Gary Mickelborough the tide started to turn into the Green’s favour and great football with pace soon rewarded us with three further goals thanks to Mickelborough a second from Webster and Steve Harris.

A late consolation goal from Milton finished the scoring 2-4 giving a first win for the new managers.

Pick of the Green were Ashley Webster and Leon Reed with Leon taking the players vote.

Team: Craig Smith, Mark Bond, Buster Beaney Sean Skillet, Leon Reed, Craig Southen, Lee Milton, Charlie Clarke, Steve Harris, Ashley Webster, Danny Cheeseman

The result was very pleasing as more players have left the 1st team outfit leaving myself and Ciaran thinking that there is something going on to discourage players turning out for the Green.

On a day when we thought our luck might change, the green's Sat first team produced an amazing display of character. Turning up on the day we felt very confident but this was very short lived when we realised that 5 yes 5 players were not going to turn up leaving Ciaran and I very bemused. After a very bright start by the green when after 10 minutes we could have been 1 0 up, it was left to an amazing display by Joe Mcquillan who denied Orpington 4 clear goals with fantastic saves. The always controversial off side law proved to be advantageous for the visitors as they went 1 up with barely minutes to spare. A good second half display by the green and if it wasn't for many squandered chances and a blatant penalty things may have turned out differently. It was left until the final 5 minutes when the visitors sealed the game with 2 late goals. The team played very well under difficult circumstances and thanks go to Gary Gibbs jnr and Danny Whitehorn for stepping in at late notice. Pick of the Green was Joe Mcquillan with a very special mention to Craig Smith who played the whole game as striker. Team: Joe McQuillan, Barry Beaney, Mark Bond, Shaun Skillet, Garry Gibbs, Glenn Mackett, Craig Southen, James Barham, Steve Harris, Danny Whitehorn, Craig Smith. Next week Sat 1st away to Milton

It was a good day for the Saturday Reserves even though they didn't kick a ball with New Romney's table-topping second string suffering a shock 2-1 home reversal at the hands of APM Mears Reserves. The situation at the top now sees the Green with three games in hand, four points adrift and a superior goal difference. Next Saturday the lads travel to meet Bly Spartans who currently occupy third spot. In the Premier, the first team are hosts to second placed Orpington. On a wider front, Ashford Town did well to draw 1-1 away to Ryman South leaders Tooting & Mitcham while it is good to see Pat Kingwell and Marcus Hodges both on the scoresheet for Hythe in a 7-1 thrashing of Slade Green in the Kent League.

Kent Premier Cup draw real test for Green

The Green have just about the most difficult tie possible in the 5th round of the Kent Sunday Premier Cup which is scheduled for 3 February. We have to travel to meet Sun FC and if that hurdle is overcome a quarter-final home match awaits against the winners of Active and Temple on 2 March. Co-managers Dave Andrews and Jamie Allan are confident that the season can still bring trophy success and despite the gods seeming to conspire against us certainly have not relinquished the league title. What could prove crucial is the league deducting 3 points for the Dynamo win for playing the 'ineligible' Steve Wilson. Fair enough, it was a genuine admin error and we will take it on the chin...let's just hope this strict adherence to all rules applies to all teams.

UNDER 15s RE-ARRANGED FIXTURE

The Under 15 side face the title favourites Thanet on Sunday in a re-arranged East Kent Youth League fixture. The lads meet at the Swan Ground at midday for the trip which will really test the new found form of the lads.

Sunday night round-up

The weather is certainly taking its toll on the fixtures and not for the first time we are in for a gruelling last three months or so of the season. I have had no news of today's cup semi-final involving the Reserves and Churchills...anyone know the outcome?

Most definitely the highlight of the New Year is the transformation of the Under 15s who won again today at Woodnesborough. Current player of the year, Jordan O'Gorman, received the man of the match accolade from manager Steve Mailey but it is also good to see former captain Aaron Neil and defender Jamie Hurst buzzing again and enjoying their football.  Netting the goals in a 3-1 success were Martyn Dalby, Dan Churchley and Keiran John. For full details of the Under 15 side, including tonight's up-to-date table, please click on the Youth Football tab.

Hopefully the Saturday sides will return to the fray next week...the firsts go to Rusthall while the Reserves entertain Oakwood Reserves.

Snodland 3 Bromley Green 2

Dave,

In an entertaining, end to end tie at Snodland, we can probably consider ourselves unlucky to come away with nothing as Snodland clinched the game 10 minutes from time with their second deflected goal of the match. However, it is through lapses in concentration & a strange desire to provide the opposition with opportunities that cost us dearly in the end. On all three Snodland goals, there were opportunities to clear the ball but a failure to do so ultimately cost us dearly. Once again we went into the game with a changed side, with both centre backs missing from the previous week. Lee Milton was drafted in at left back, with Mick Davies starting at right back & Mark Bond & Darren Moody taking up central defensive duties. All was well as we dominated the opening exchanges & deservedly took the lead via the excellent Tom Daweswho finished neatly after Paul Burt had mis-cued his first time shot from the edge of the box. Snodland swept back into the game & after equalising with a deflection off of Mark Bond's head, dominated the remainder of the first half with some slick passing that left the Green chasing shadows. It was inevitable that the Maidstone side took the lead on the brink of half time with the Green giving the ball away cheaply & then not reacting to a loose ball in the area. The second half started no better for the Green so changes were made to bulk up an over-run midfield quartet. Leon Reed entered the fray & duly demonstrated his physical qualities with his aerial dominance & no-nonsense attitude to winning the ball, whatever the cause. Slowly, we turned the game in our favour when we equalised via another Tom Daweseffort, this time at the second attempt. Instead of taking the game to Snodland, we once again switched off & the killer blow was struck when a defensive clearance fell to a Snodland forward whose strike appeared to be heading in the direction of the downs but hit the hapless Ben Stone on the back & flew in the top corner. Paul Burt & Steve Harris both had golden opportunities to salvage a point but as things are not going our way at the moment Burt's effort was cleared off the line & Harris' close range shot hit the Snodland keeper on the nose!!!

Joe McQuillan; Mick Davies, Mark Bond, Darren Moody, Lee Milton, Steve Harris, Dan Barham, Glenn Mackett, Harry Hrehorow, Paul Burt, Tom Dawes. Subs all used: Ben Stone, Leon Reed, Craig Smith

Scorer: Tom Dawes (2)

Report from Ciaran McQuillan (Team manager)

Morning update: Sat Res game OFF

Overnight rain has led to today's home Reserve fixture with APM Mears Reserves being postponed. The prospects for tomorrow's Bodkin Cup tie with Bliby are, according to fixture secretary Ciaran McQuillan,  also 'very doubtful'. Further updates as and when there is anything to report.

This weekend's action

Saturday: Firsts away to Snodland; Reserves home to APM Mears Res OFF

Sunday: Firsts home to Bliby (Bodkin) OFF ; Reserves away Crusader (Hythe Road Rec 10.30am) OFF; Under 15s away to White Cliff Rangers

Young side gives hope for the future

Bromley Green 2 Orpington 4

The only County League sides in action on Saturday provided plenty of entertainment at the Swan Ground with the north Kent side eventually booking a place in the 4th round of the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield.Ciaran McQuillan was upbeat after the game and told The Green Linethat he and Peter [Intrieri] were proud of the boys and the spirit shown despite defeat and they were keenly looking forward to the upcoming challenge of what really matters, climbing up the league table. In fact, the young Green team looked the better side for much of the tie but paid the price for a host of wasted opportunities, including a missed penalty.Skipper Glenn Mackett and wide man Steve Harris had twice put the home side ahead but the visitors, reduced to ten men for much of the second period, caught the Green rearguard napping with two long balls as both sides went for the win at 2-2.McQuillan drew many positives from the match including the form of Charlie Clark and a steady start for Darren Moody. Next week the lads have a crucial fixture away to Snodland.

Patron’s seasonal message

Reflecting upon the past year throws up the usual mixed memories of achievement and disappointment; the extreme emotions of joy and abject sadness; leading to consideration of how we can all strive to make 2008 a year of collective and self development within what is still a very special club.

There has been sadness during the year, most recently with the passing of former player Barry Cunningham, and my thanks to Ciaran McQuillan for representing the club at Wednesday’s funeral. Barry in fact spent more years with Bromley Green than any other football club; although his latter days were with Dynamo and Ashford Town. There are no suitable words and all we can do is offer Jim and the family our heartfelt condolences. The death of former club captain Tommy Stafford came as a terrible personal shock. I joined the Green as a young schoolboy and deem myself as privileged to have played alongside and later co-managed with Tommy for many years … a special person of integrity who earned eternal respect.

Things have been difficult of late and, with three team managers resigning in the space of a month, the year has not exactly ended quite as planned! However, I am sure Clive, Mark and Lee will all wish to stay involved when the dust settles. Dave Andrews, Jamie Allan, Steve Mailey, Peter Intrieri and Ciaran have each committed themselves to important team management roles and I am truly thankful to them.

Despite fluctuating fortunes on and off the field, I am confident the future is bright, that our restructuring will eventually be proved right, and that we will make progression. With characters that bring passion and experience [such as Alvin Gigg, Ian Holloway and Mark Day] again regular faces at matches, how can anyone be pessimistic? My thanks are extended to all the players for their efforts during the year; to fellow officers and managers, supporters and helpers for continuing to give freely of their valuable time. The world wide web has kept many of our former members in touch and it is always pleasing to hear from you.

I wish all Bromley Green people, wherever you are, a peaceful Christmas and a New Year that delivers contentment and fulfilment to you and your families.

Dave Homewood (Patron)

Frozen pitches led to today's games both being postponed

New managers add new signings

Ciaran McQuillan and Peter Intrieri have acted swiftly to replace those players  who left at the same time as Clive Cook's departure. Full details later but the new Saturday first management team are confident they have a squad that can in time climb up the table. Doubtful starter again this week is Craig Southen while the news concerning Lee Gilham is still not encouraging. This Saturday hopefully the much-postponed cup tie with Orpington can take place at the Swan Ground (1.30pm).

Club moves quick to appoint new managers

Following the resignation of Lee Ealham on Sunday, the club has appointed Dave Andrews and Jamie Allan as joint managers of the Sunday firsts with Mark Day continuing in his supportive role. Ian Ross has been asked to make a decision on how he sees his role as the side looks to recover from recent humiliating defeats against Kennington and Market.

Steve Mailey accepts youth job

The club is pleased to announce that Steve Mailey has accepted the job as manager of the Under 15s after talks last week following the sudden resignation of Mark Acott. Mailey, recovering from an operation that has kept him away from football in recent weeks, will meet the players and management team before the next fixture away to White Cliffs Rangers on 6 January. Steve will combine his duties with those at Ashford Cavaliers in the Sunday morning league. Green youth coach Rupert Sladden told The Green Line "We had a brilliant training session tonight and myself and the boys cannot wait to work with Steve. With a couple of new signings lined up, I am confident we can make real progress and build for stability next season."

This Sunday (23.12.07) Phil Wedge, Mark Day and Rupert Sladden are planning a Fun Day with the U15s and seniors mixing in for a friendly. More details from Phil on 07955587989.

Sunday reserves go joint top of table

Bromley Green Reserves 2 Churchills 0

This keenly contested Division Two clash at the Swan Ground was settled by a goal in each half as the Green moved up to joint top of the table. Early exchanges were not for the faint hearted, with Richard Floyd receiving a caution from referee Geoff Stanborough. Clear cut openings were at a premium and it was evident that the first goal would have a telling influence on the final outcome. Matt Wedge was rewarded for his persistency by gaining half a yard to smash home and give the home side a slender half time advantage. The second period saw both sides enjoy spells of dominance but the Green always held firm and the points were clinched when Ashley Webster slid in number two. Late on Jason Thomas and Webster again had chances to increase the tally but with Jamie Dobbin busy in midfield and Shaun Dadd looking safe in goal, the Green were now largely in control. Phil Wedge praised the whole squad for their endeavours but knows the lads will need to be up for it when the sides meet again in the New Year in the Divisional Cup. Man of the match: centre back Terry Perk who, despite being rusty, proved once more that there is no substitution for class. Green: S Dadd; R Milton, T Perk, T Poyner, R Floyd, C Burden, J Thomas, M Wedge, J Dobbin, R Bower, A Webster. Subs not used: J Coleman, D Hagger

Cup disaster for first team

Ex Green man Mark Mason notched a personal tally of four in a 7-0 humiliation away to Market in the Premier Cup. Full details are not in but the ramifications of this result are sure to be deep.

Worst display of season as Reserves suffer cup defeat

Bromley Green's second string were quite frankly awful in this afternoon's much-awaited Reserves Division Cup clash at the Swan Ground which the Blues won 4-1. Individual errors did not help but there has to be a collective acceptance that this was a below par performance. Every year we make a hash of the cups and it appears this time round is no exception. The old adage that now we concentrate on the league gives little comfort to the Green squad whose goal came from Stuart Prior. A trip to Bearsted next Saturday provides a chance to get the show back on the road.

The first team game (ironically switched to Orpington to get the match played) was called off due to burst water pipes. Hopefully next Saturday the Swan Ground will be fit to finally get the game out of the way.

Thursday 13 December snippets

MARK ACOTT RESIGNS

Mark Acott, the current holder of the Chairmans Award for Endeavour, resigned from the post of U15s manager after training on Tuesday night. The club, which is not prepared to divulge Mark's reasons for leaving, wishes to publicly thank him for keeping the side going last year against all odds in the East kent Youth League. Patron Dave Homewood and Chairman Stan Donald are interviewing over the next few days and a successor is likely to be announced before Sunday's home game with Thanet Colts. The squad is to meet at 12.30 for a 2pm kick off.

YOUTH CLUBMAN AWARD TO BE RENAMED TOMMY STAFFORD MEMORIAL AWARD

The legendary former club captain, manager and Vice President of Bromley Green, Tommy Stafford, who died suddenly earlier this year is to be honoured by the club.  The Youth Clubman of the Year Award is to be renamed the 'Tommy Stafford Memorial Award' and the new trophy [with all the previous winners engraved upon it] will be presented for the first time at this season's presentation dinner.

FIXTURES FOR THE COMING WEEKEND

Saturday first at Orpington in Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield (Rnd 3); Reserves at home to New Romney in the Divisional Cup; Sunday first away to Market in the Premier Cup; Reserves at home to Churchills in the league and the U15s at home to Thanet Colts also in the league.

Barry Cunningham loses fight for life
It is with deep sadness that we report the death of former Bromley Green striker Barry Cunningham who lost his fight against bowel cancer on Saturday. Barry came up through the youth ranks, where his enthusiasm and love of the game was an example to all, before going on to play 165 senior matches for the club and netting 75 goals. In recent years, his teams have included Crusader, Aldington and Ashford Reserves. Everyone at the club sends heartfelt condolences to his family.

ALL GREEN GAMES OFF THIS WEEKEND DUE TO WATERLOGGED PITCHES [HOME AND AWAY]

Only two games in the Kent County League Reserves Division with New Romney disposing of Borden 3-0 and Bly Spartans moving into second spot with a narrow 3-2 defeat of Lydd Reserves. The Green stay in pole position on goal difference.

Bower hat trick keeps title hopes alive

Appledore 2  Bromley Green Reserves 5

Robbie Bower became the second Green player this weekend to strike a hat trick as the second string pulled off a magnificent away victory to keep their title aspirations very much alive. Completing the scoring in an excellent match despite the atrocious weather, were Ashley Webster and Matt Wedge. Next week the side makes the short trip to play local rivals Crusader in another vital league encounter (10.30am).

Saturday tea-time update

Leaders Green lay down the challenge

Lyddites no match for Webster and Davies

Lydd Reserves 1 Bromley Green Reserves 5

Losing our title last season was a bitter pill to swallow but the signs are that there is strength enough in depth to reclaim it after a comprehensive away win on Saturday. Lydd Reserves, propping up the table, were never going to worry table-toppers Green but this victory proved all the more valuable with Borden Reserves having their home game postponed. The situation at the head of the Reserves Division East now sees New Romney Reserves, Bly Spartans Reserves and Borden all breathing down our neck and, although they each have games in hand, the old adage of ‘points in the bag’ starts to come into play. The lethal finishing of Ashley Webster (2) and Anthony Davies, with a terrific hat trick, put the gloss on a solid all round team performance; while Sean Gibbs was the manager’s man of the match. Next week there is a chance to increase the pressure on the chasing pack when lowly Larkfield & New Hythe Reserves visit the Swan Ground. Dale Mackett takes the whistle for a tussle that kicks off at 2pm.

With the first team game called off due to the sodden ground, attention already turns to next Saturday when Ciaran McQuillan and Peter Intrieri face the daunting task of keeping quiet a Norton Sports forward line that is rattling in goals this term. Norton increased their grip on the top spot in the Premier with a thumping 4-1 victory at Lewisham but this is the kind of game that sorts the men from the boys and the Green lads have a real chance to make a name for themselves. Kick off at Norton is again at 2pm.

Thursday night: Scorers in a 5-0 win at the six-a-side that keeps us top were Tommy Dawes 2, Sean Gibbs 2 and Harry Hrehorow

Sunday Night Headlines

U15s win local derby 5-2

Sunday Reserves into Cup Semi Final

A cold Sunday brought plenty of cheer to the Green with Phil Wedge's Sunday Reserves moving into the last four of the Divisional Cup with a well-deserved win against visiting Egerton. Ashley Webster again provided the cutting edge with a typical opportunist hat trick but this was a splendid all round squad performance. Richard Floyd and the returning Ryan Holloway played soundly at the back alongside Tom Poyner and Ricky Milton while in midfield there was plenty of drive from Wedge, Major and the evergreen Robbie Bower.

Following on the top pitch, the U15s played some of their best football of the season and only two late goals from a lack of concentration gave visitors Park Farm Rangers any consolation. In the end the Green ran out 5-2 victors with the goals coming from Jamie Hurst, Reece Murrell 2, Reece Calahane and Jack Blowers. Murrell received the man of the match accolade, Hurst was outstanding at left back,  and there were excellent performances from Martin Dalby, Jordan O'Gorman and Joe Barton. Next week the two sides lock horns again at The Ridge (2pm).

Clive Cook "Unlucky...the story of our season"

Lewisham stole the points from a 2-1 win at the Swan Ground on Saturday after the Green had gone ahead following a superb move between Marcus Hodges and David Cook that was finished off by Glenn Mackett. Retiring manager Clive Cook said he could not have asked any more from the lads but perhaps goals and that "...that has been the story of our season so far". Next week the side entertain Orpington in a cup match with Peter Intrieri and Ciaran McQuillan looking after things until the end of the season.

First team game Sunday is OFF!

Press release from Bromley Green FC

Issued by The Patron

Sunday 18 November 2007

[There is no press embargo]

Following next Saturday’s home game with Lewisham, Clive Cook is standing down as the Bromley Green FC Saturday First Team manager. This was not expected by the Club and in Clive’s words is based on ‘personal reasons’ away from football. Clive has reiterated his love for this Club and it has been agreed he is given some ‘space’ while he deals with certain private matters. In due course the Club will be sitting down with Clive and discussing his future role. I use this opportunity to thank Clive for efforts over the years and look forward to meeting with him and discussing the future when he feels the time is right. The Patron, Chairman and a senior Vice-President have made a temporary appointment until the end of this season; after which time the position will be reviewed. Full details will be published after Saturday’s match. Out of respect to Clive, the Club expects all of its senior players to remain loyal to the cause and to continue to strive for excellence with Bromley Green FC.

Dave Homewood (Patron)

Green scrape through in extra time

Bromley Green 5 Essembee 3

The Green were 3-1 down with 6 minutes to go but fought back to move into the next round of the Ashford Charity Trophy following extra time. Manager Lee Ealham said “We were poor for much of the game and we are leaking goals; but I was pleased that we never gave up. All credit to the reserve boys Tom Poyner and Jason Thomas who were drafted in”. Netting the goals against the side that knocked us out last term were Tom Lockett, Danny Valler, John Douglas and skipper Glenn Mackett 2 (1 pen). The seconds had no game but next week are at home to either Albion or Egerton in the league.

Under 15s at Highfield on Sunday…lost 2-1 (for more details of the Under 15s please click on the Youth Football tab)

Re-arranged game: Sunday 2 December away to Park Farm Rangers

Mixed results in Saturday cups
A Marcus Hodges goal was of little consolation to the Saturday first team in a 4-1 defeat at Hollands & Blair but the seconds had better luck in the Ashford Charity Trophy, winning 7-0 at Wittersham. On target were Tom Poyner, Lee Milton, Stuart Prior (2) Jimmy Pickard and Ashley Webster (2).

Today’s fixtures (Sunday 18 November 2007)
Essembee visit the Swan Ground for an attractive Ashford Charity Trophy tie with a 10.30 morning kick off. Our U15s have a local derby at the North School where the opposition are Highfield. Supporters please note there is a midday kick off here. There is no game for the seconds who next week will have Charlie Clark back in contention following suspension.

17 November 2007 Saturday night reflection

Disaster day for local sides in Inter-Regional Challenge Cup

Today just wasn’t one to remember for our local clubs in the second round of the Inter-Regional Challenge Cup with the Green going down 4-1 at Hollands & Blair, Lydd losing 3-0 on their visit to lowly Milton and Kennington suffering a crushing 6-2 home defeat by Guru Nanak. Next week Clive and the boys entertain Lewisham in an attempt to close the 21-point gap opened up at the top of the Premier by leaders Norton Sports. With Lee Gilham and Danny Barham having their seasons ruined by injury and midfielder Scott McRobert suspended until February these are not easy times. Norton themselves are at home to Fleet. Our table-topping Reserves will be hoping lowly Platt Heath United Reserves can take something from their trip to our main rivals Borden who have two games in hand over the Green.

10/11 November 2007 Weekend round-up

Super Saturday, Sad Sunday

Two convincing victories saw the Green begin the weekend brightly only for Sunday to witness two surprise home defeats. Bearsted Reserves were never going to be a real threat in the Weald of Kent Charity Cup and the lads strolled home (report to follow…Joe do this if ok please) while the Reserves pulled off a fine 3-1 away win against APM Mears Reserves. In an ill-tempered game, which saw Tom Poyner suffer a broken nose, the goals came from Stuart Prior with two, one from the penalty spot, and one from Poyner himself. According to Steve Wilson, the spirit in the side is ‘phenomenal’ and we have gained results in our last two matches through the togetherness.

On Sunday the first team were embarrassed 4-1 on their home ground by local rivals Kennington. A Glenn Mackett goal was of little use to the Green who now face an uphill fight to hang onto their precious crown. No respite for the lads who next week entertain highly rated Essembee who knocked us out of the Ashford Charity Trophy last term.

With the Sunday Reserves game at Churchills called off due to a lack of a referee, attention turned to the Under 15s who seemed determined to follow in their seniors footsteps with a less than convincing display. A goal down in the first few seconds to Dynamo United, the boys fought back to equalise through Dan Churchley but ended the day well beaten. For twenty minutes the Green, with defender Jordan O’Gorman and midfielder Aaron Neil looking good, held the initiative but it was with long punt breakaways that the visitors nicked their goals. Although George Wall netted from the spot in the second half, the miserable 6-2 scoreline tells its own story. Next Sunday the boys make the short trip to the North School to meet Highfield.

Following a 4-0 win over Brabourne, the Thursday night sixers find themselves top of the table in the Towers competition. On target for the Green were Sean Gibbs and hat-trick man Luke Stanley.

Kent Sunday Premier Cup Special

McQuillan and Barrett steal the show

Bromley Green 3 Market Hotel 1

The day’s top tie in the Kent Sunday Premier Cup lived up to its billing with a keenly contested battle at the Swan Ground that ended in favour of the in-form Green. Sporting almost a complete squad of ex-Green players, the visitors started the strongest and went ahead through a ridiculous penalty decision that would have been funny had it not been in such an important match. Even without the pace and menace of the injured Gary Mickelborough, the Green began to take control, Lee Milton hitting a post, and it came as no surprise when David Cook headed home a Marcus Hodges free kick before half time. The second period was typical, gutsy Green, with the spirit in the side now evident for all to see as three wonderful saves by Joe McQuillan kept the visitors at bay. Cometh the hour as they say and former youth team player Kevin Barrett, in his biggest match since his return to the local scene, snatched the games crucial third goal to edge the Green in front after excellent work by Hodges and Kingwell and hesitancy by visiting keeper Dan Noden. To their credit, the pub side kept plugging away but it was all over when skipper Glenn Mackett hammered home a spot kick for a 3-1 scoreline. So McQuillan and Barrett were the heroes but beaming managers Lee Ealham and Ian Ross knew there was much more to it than that; this was a squad effort with all the lads playing with purpose and great determination. As Ealey said, "...we were patchy in spells but well worth our win and Joe is repaying the faith the club has shown in him...it was a top class performance. Now the Market game is over we must concentrate on the league and we will be taking the game with Kennington very seriously. As usual, everybody wants to beat us but we are on a winning streak now". Green: J McQuillan; C Southen, C Petts, S Skillett, D Valler, L Milton, D Cook, G Mackett, K Barrett, P Kingwell, M Hodges. Sub: L Ealham. Next Sunday the side faces perhaps its most difficult test to date when making the short trip to meet old friends Kennington (10.30am).

Not such good news from the second string camp after a 4-0 drubbing away to Market Reserves. The side was without Stuart Watson and Robbie Bower (injured) and Charlie Clarke (suspended) but that is no excuse for what Phil Wedge described as “…a poor performance; it was a bad day at the office…”. New signing Paul Ledger was welcomed to the club.

Cup defeat but brave effort by youngsters [U15 Cup]

Bromley Green 1 Easterners 3

Playing against a team from two divisions higher, the Green put up a brave performance in the cup on Sunday afternoon at the Swan Ground. We rode our luck a shade but when Dan Churchley pulled us level at 1-1 a major shock seemed possible. Some good saves by keeper Martin Bugden and enthusiastic midfield work by Ashley and Aaron made for a much closer scoreline than many anticipated.

Hodges treble the highlight

Bromley Green 5 University of Kent 0

Marcus Hodges hit yet another hat trick as the Green moved comfortably into the third round of the Kent Intermediate Shield. Danny Barham only lasted ten minutes and there are worries over his long-term fitness as the midfielder has only played a handful of games in recent months. Glenn Mackett with a penalty and Craig Southen netted the other Green goals in a surprisingly easy win. There is more cup action next Saturday when Bearsted Reserves are the visitors for a Weald of Kent Charity Cup match (1.45pm). The leading sides in league action cashed in, with Norton Sports winning 6-0 at Milton and Orpington hammering former giants Bearsted 7-0.

Away win keeps Reserves in touch at the top

Platt United Res 2 Bromley Green Res 4

An excellent match that maintains our interest in the chase for honours with the goals coming from A Davies, K Barrett and S Gibbs 2. Main problem is that leaders Borden keep winning as well, this week 3-0 at Oakwood. Next Saturday the team is away to APM Mears Reserves in another vital league encounter.

Gilham broken leg

After all this time, Lee Gilham has been told by specialists that he has broken his leg after all. Everybody in the club hopes to see him back playng before too long.

Sixers win again

The Thursday night six-a-side boys won again, this time 2-0 although I do not know who they played. Green squad: Joe McQuillan, L Stanley (1), S Gibbs (1), A Webster, G Gibbs, D Hagger, L Williams, S Wilson

Ealham: Bring on Market

Lee Ealham is hoping for the rarity of a full squad to pick from next Sunday when Market provide the opposition at the Swan Ground for the plum tie in the second round of the Kent Sunday Premier Cup. To reach this stage, the Green had to overcome Tonbridge Invicta after extra time in round one while Market received a walkover when Bearsted dropped out of the competition. Long-term injury victim Lee Gilham is a definite non-starter for a clash that Ealham views as a must-win game. "We need to keep our winning momentum going and it is pleasing that, with people coming into the squad doing so well, we face really difficult selection decisions. At The Rype we did enough in windy and bumpy conditions to see off Grasshoppers in the Bodkin but Rossi and myself will be looking to step up a level next Sunday".

On target for the Green at Lydd were Lee Milton, skipper Glenn Mackett with a brace [one from the penalty spot], Marcus Hodges and Gary Mickelborough with a wind-assisted cross.

Meanwhile at the Swan Ground the Reserves were recording an emphatic 8-1 victory over Locomotive to keep up their challenge at the head of the table. The goals were provided by Matt Wedge 2, Ashley Webster 2, James Major 2, Darryl Hagger and Chris Burden. Phil Wedge is adamant his side can make a serious bid for the title and is looking forward to next Sunday's short trip to face Market Reserves.

Clive Cook talks exclusively to The Green Lane and reflects upon the 3-3 draw at Cray

"What should have been an ideal game for us to start climbing the table turned into another disappointing result with Danny Barham again failing a pre-match fitness test and both Darren Hover and Harry Hrehorow having to go off near the end of the first half. Hover has a hamstring pull while Hrehorow suffered a knee injury and add this to Craig Southen’s red card, a penalty, five goals and for the neutral it was certainly an entertaining first half. Pat Kingwell gave us the lead from a free kick, before Cray levelled, and then Glenn Mackett netted from the spot after Hrehorow had been crudely chopped down in the box. Hrehorow had to be carried off and the home side levelled before Marcus Hodges scored a beautiful goal, getting onto the end of Buster Beaney’s free kick. With Southen off after defending himself against being forearm smashed in the back of the head, we were down to ten men and then Hover had to leave the field. Chris Gilham came on at right back and Chris Petts switched to centre with Tommy Dawes on at the right of midfield. The second period was typical of the Green, with real spirit shown as our backs were against the wall. But with time virtually up, it had to happen! A penalty to them following a handball by Pogo: 3-3. Still we should have won it when Hodges was brought down in the box when clean through but the referee waved play on and blew his whistle for full time. A very eventful game but the story of our season…injuries, suspensions, no luck."

Saturday night headlines...

Firsts draw 3-3 at Cray Valley (PM)

Details not in yet but Clive will not be happy with just a point at mediocre Cray and these are 'must-win' games if we are to be in with a fighting chance of the main prize. More worrying is the barnstorming form of Norton Sports who won again to extend their lead at the top to 15 points.

Reserves lose 5-3 at Eccles in Kent Junior Cup

On target for the seconds were S Gibbs, L Reed and A Davies. Four goals down after 25 minutes, the lads actually 'won' the second half 3-1. But it's back to concentrating on catching Borden in the league for Gary Gibbs and Steve Wilson with a trip to Platt United Reserves next week now the main focus.

This weekend: No home games on Saturday with Firsts at Cray in the League and the Reserves away to Eccles in Kent Junior Cup

Sunday: Reserves home to Locomotive and Firsts away to Grasshoppers in the Bodkin Cup

(25 October) Thursday night out with U15s

Please meet cinema at 7pm

Evening sponsored by Lee Ealham, Gary Gibbs and Dave Homewood

Hope everybody enjoyed their evening...thanks very much! Dave

Monday morning:

Clive Cook's exclusive report to The Green Line on the Hollands & Blair defeat

"Saturday started as the last nine have, with Danny Barham crying off with the injury he sustained last week to add to the lengthy injury list. But still I could put out a side which really should have gained the three points against a high flying Hollands side which do play very good football. Dan Noden (back after being away) was at fault with the first, running out 20 yards from his box to clear a back pass which he completely missed, and allowing the striker to put into an empty net. A 1-0 calamity at its best. Then 2-0 just before the break, scored by a striker who really was a cut above anything else on the pitch, a beautiful 20-yard volley from a quality player. Half time was probably the most eventful since I have been manager of the side as we aired views, strong talk to say the least and the boys knew how bad they had performed. I made changes with Hodges coming on for Hrehorow and it is amazing what a few strong words can do with the boys putting in their best half of football/effort/determination this season. Chris Gilham pulled one back following good work by Cookie and we battered Hollands totally in the second half; but more misses, notably by Hodges who missed the goal completely with a on-on-one with the keeper, which was followed by them breaking away and a wicked defelction...3-1; when your luck is down these things happen. Still we came back to 3-2 through Cookie but with luck and some tremendous defending Hollands snatched the points. Their manager came up to me afterwards and said that if it was a boxing match we would have won on points by a mile but I don't want niceties. We will get through this without a doubt and if they show me the commitment they did in the second half we will be fine".

Sunday sides both win

It was a good day for the club's two senior Sunday sides with the firsts winning 8-3 at Swinford Manor against a spirited Ashford Cavaliers team that had taken an early lead and the seconds putting themselves right in the frame at the head of Division Two with a fine 2-0 victory over leaders Appledore. On target for the firsts were Marcus Hodges with a hat trick, Gary Mickelborough, Lee Milton, Glenn Mackett from the penalty spot, Danny Valler and a hapless home defender following good work by substitute 'left winger' Lee Ealham. Next week the boys are down the road at Lydd to face Grasshoppers in a Bodkin Cup tie.

Meanwhile, at the Swan Ground, the seconds were well worth their 2-0 success against the Dore who only threatened in short spells. Tom Poyner, Charlie Clark and Kevin Barrett caught the eye for the Green who netted twice during the second half through Ashley Webster and Matt Wedge. Next Sunday sees another home game with Locomotive the visitors for a 10.30 kick off.

Saturday night snippets...first with the news

Under 15s have rearranged friendly tomorrow at Swan Ground 12.15 kick off

Sat firsts slip up 3-2 against Hollands & Blair

Sat seconds up to second in the table after another great away success

Please scroll down for details...

The Green slipped up at home to Hollands & Blair today with the 3-2 setback seeing us now 10 points behind unbeaten leaders Norton Sports who trounced Crockenhill 9-1. Second placed Orpington also went crazy, hitting Milton with an eight goal haul. Next week we need to get back in the winning groove when travelling to meet Cray Valley. Goals from Chris Gilham and David Cook will prove of little consolation to team manager Clive Cook who knows the Green must take something from home games if the title is to remain within reach. Meanwhile Gary Gibbs was delighted with his charges as the reserves pulled off another terrific away win at Otford United thanks to goals by Leon Reed, Ashley Webster 2 and substitute Anthony Davies. The boys are now up to second in the table following a less than flying start and next in sight are leaders Borden who are unbeaten and lead the Green by one point with two games in hand. There is a break from league action next Saturday when we travel to Eccles for a Kent Junior Cup match.

Tomorrow morning (Sunday 21 October) the Reserves are at home to Appledore and this is followed immediately with a rearranged friendly between the Green U15s and Park Farm Rangers. The boys are grateful for the fantastic support they are receiving this season from senior club members and parents ... and win or lose it is never  boring with Mark Acott's side!

Smudger donation

Bromley Green FC legend Tony 'Smudger' Smith has forwarded a cash donation to the club with best wishes from himself and Carole. Midfielder Smudger made many memorable performances for the Green until his retirement four seasons ago. Patron Dave Homewood described Smith as "...very brave after recovery from serious illness; a 'players player' respected by all the youngsters; he was also a manager's dream with his attitude and outstanding ability and will always be affectionately regarded as part of the Green family. I know Tony keeps close tabs on our progress and his contribution will be put to good use".

Sixers win again

Bromley Green continued their excellent form in the six-a-side tournament at The Towers on Thursday night with a 4-2 victory over All Stars. The squad was Joe McQuillan, Gary Gibbs, Sean Gibbs, Steve Wilson, Lee Williams, Ashley Webster, Darryl Hagger. On target: S Gibbs 2, G Gibbs, S Wilson

The weekend ahead (20/21 Oct 2007):

Sat firsts home to Hollands & Blair

Sat seconds away to Otford

Sun firsts away Ashford Cavaliers

Sun seconds home Appledore

U15s: training as no game this Sunday

* Cook unhappy with level of performance at Coney Hall

* Ealham: I said somebody was in for a hiding...we were awesome today...no team could have lived with us

GOALFEST AS GREEN TEAMS SMASH IN 25

Centre back Clark nets six!

Our two Sunday senior sides rattled in an incredible 25 goals today and leading the way was reserves central defender Charlie Clark with a personal tally of six! The seconds walloped poor Red Heathens Reserves 19-0 with home manager Phil Wedge claiming that "...the score flattered them". Also on target to boost our goal-difference were Matt Wedge (5), Ashley Webster (3), Chris Burden (2), James Major, Jason Thomas and Ricky Milton.

Kingwell treble as Green prove too strong for Brews

Pat Kingwell returned to action and claimed a hat trick at Hopes Grove as the Sunday firsts recorded a useful 6-2 victory against High Halden outfit Brewmaster. The Green's [enforced!] rotation system hasn't always looked too convincing this term but the lads are grinding out results and not many sides will come away from the Brews with maximum points. Other scorers for a rampant Green were Glenn Mackett, Marcus Hodges and Gary Mickelborough.

Saturday 13.10.07: Firsts suffer surprise 3-1 defeat at Coney Hall

Cook: I will make changes for next Saturday

Saturday first team manager Clive Cook could not hide his disappointment after a shock 3-1 setback at Coney Hall. "I had seven players missing from the Lewisham game, where we were superb, but that is no excuse as the side put out today was more than capable of doing the business". A long-range free kick from defender Buster Beaney was little consolation for Cook who continued "We were bullied out of the contest today and the goals we gave away, coupled with the host of missed chances, leave me very unhappy.  At this level you cannot afford to keep squandering opportunities or you get punished on the break, and that's just what happened.  Mackett, Beaney and Burt all should have netted when we were on top. We had a 'clear the air' talk after the game but apart from Ben Spilstead and Craig Southen no-one can be happy with their level of performance. I will be making changes for next Saturday and believe we can still do things this season".

Milton hat trick boosts reserves cup bid

Bromley Green Reserves 6 Larkfield & New Hythe Reserves 0

In recent years the second string have done remarkably well, including of course winning the league the season before last; but the one area of abject disappointment has been our falure to shine in the cups. Perhaps that is about to change as the lads completely outplayed visiting Larkfield in this Divisional cup tie on Saturday. Lee Milton was again in top form, hitting a splendid hat trick, with the tally made up by Ashley Webster, Leon Reed and substitute Tom Poyner. Next week the squad travels to meet Otford in a league game.
