Manager Mace happy with opening day victory

What a start for the Saturday seniors who, despite a missed penalty and, in all honesty, some sloppy goals conceded, emerged with maximum points from their local derby at Sandyacres against old rivals Ashford Dynamo. Levii grabbed a treble while James Haylock-Ashdown and Connor Gower put in polished performances as the boys prepared for another hard test next week against league and cup double holders Wittersham.

Here is the manager’s report:

“Today we were away to very good Ashford Dynamo side who had already beaten us in a friendly earlier in the year, so we knew we had to be on top of our game. We started off with a very good tempo pressing high up the pitch not giving them any chance to play out from the back and within 5 minutes took the lead from a good ball through their defence setting up Levii one to one with the keeper who finished in great style. Dynamo then came back into the game and equalised after 20 mins gone. The Green responded really well and started knocking the ball around playing some great short passing and moving to open up their defence again with another great finish this time from Jordan to make it 2-1 again Dynamo came back in the game to make it 2-2 at half time. Told the guys at half time that we are playing well and that actually we can go on and win the game because we were the best side, made one substitute at half time brought on Connor for Matt. Started the second half like we started the first half pressing the opposition not giving them any room to play and another clinical finish from Levii gave us the lead we deserved to make it 3-2. We started to believe in ourselves playing again great short passing and moving and with another great pass from Tom set up James who finished well to make it 4-2. Well after that it was all green dominating the game playing great football to let in Levii to score and make it his hat trick and go ahead 5-2, made 2 more substitutions bringing on Joe and Ryan Ford who played well when they came on. Dynamo came back into the game in the last minute to make it 5-3 full time. Fantastic start to the season everybody played well, we looked solid from defence to midfield great squad performance you should all be proud of yourselves, come on the Green”.

Ben Seager (6), Sam Woch (2), Jasper Kingsman, Dominic Sloan, Rex Joy, Harry Riney, Brayden Gillam went on a goal bonanza at Waterside this morning against Herne Bay in their final pre-season warm-up match before next week’s league opener. Player of the Match was Lorenzo Baker. A delighted Charlie Fletcher enthused “The squad played really well with a collective effort. Man of the match could have gone to several players with Jasper, Anuj, Warren, Frankie and Lennon amongst those who shone; while Callum kept a clean sheet”. Thanks go to new acquisition Nigel Wootton who is helping with coaching across the club and will be working with Charlie and Dave Spencer; plus we are pleased to confirm that Becky will be the team’s admin person. All-in-all, a most promising display. Lots of work to be done but we are getting there.

Nigel Wootton, who is helping with coaching this season, also refereed the U10s against Pilgrims. Pictured with Charlie Fletcher before the final pre-season match with Herne Bay.
