Old boys join in Green’s celebrations

Bromley Green Football Club celebrated its 80thanniversary with a presentation dinner and amongst the guests were Vandanel Kent County League chairman Cyril Windiate, Ashford & District Sunday League chairman Alan Speakman and Geoff Stanborough of the local Referees Association.

Patron Dave Homewood, who won the Bill Mickelborough Clubman of the Year award, said it was a splendid evening that illustrated the club’s ethos that everyone in football should work together for the betterment of the great game we love. The guests and stalwarts from previous eras shared the occasion and made some of the presentations. In particular, it was a special night for ‘old boys’ Reg Underdown and Jack Stafford who received engraved framed pictures of their 1950s playing days from club President Chris Dorsett.

Chairman Stan Donald chose Maxine Smith for his Endeavour Award while, for the second year running, Jamie Hurst lifted the coveted Tommy Stafford Memorial Cup for Youth Clubman of the Year.

Winner of the Peter Knott Trophy for the Most Improved Player in the whole club was Kenny Hallett who has made enormous strides since joining the Green last summer with the ‘Best Newcomer’ trophy going to left-sider Tom Head, who was also celebrating his birthday,

Defender Paul Allan has fitted in perfectly in his first season and was rewarded for some top class performances by receiving the Patron’s Award for Excellence from legendary former club captain Gary Holloway.

Perhaps the season past will best be remembered for the incredible support the club has had both home and away; none more so than at Faversham where a massive turn-out by the now well-known ‘Green Army’ witnessed a narrow defeat in the final of the Les Leckie Cup. Recognition was given to both Paul Carter, for his photographic expertise, and the club’s historian Derek West who toils for long hours in putting together the jigsaw of the past. Another follower, Karen Greenfield, was delighted to win the Ernie Wedge Memorial Cup for Supporter of the Year. The fans themselves voted young Ryan Fitzgerald as Supporters Player of the Year.

Lifetime Service Awards went to retiring manager Phil Wedge, who is the new Fixture Secretary, Stan Donald, Alvin Gigg, Ian Holloway, club skipper Glenn Mackett, loyal servants Danny Valler and Lee Milton and Welfare Officer Terry Perk.

There was a big celebration for the Sunday Reserves who are the Division Two champions while senior side managers Dave Smith and Steve Mailey will be looking to go one better than last term after coming so close on both the league and cup fronts. There were special framed awards for Ian Mace, Trent Thomas, Trevor Strand and Steve Mailey.

Of the players’ awards, Mickey Doyle came out top for the Saturday 1sts and Ryan Smith took the top Sunday accolade.
