Under 14s Friendly
Bromley Green 11-0 Mersham
Report by Dave Homewood

Our first thoughts are with the Mersham captain who unfortunately broke an ankle this morning … let’s hope he makes a full and quick recovery.

At the end of the 2012-2013 campaign, I stated that there would be additions to the playing personnel of the Under 14s as we look forward to a new challenge next season in the Ashford & District Youth League at Under 15 level. Six players [who always attend training by the way] started their first competitive 11-a-side match today and all showed enough to suggest that at last there is going to be real competition for places.

Having to fight for the right to be in the squad is vital to sharpen everybody up and at the same time I will create a much more professional profile than has previously been possible. Prior to next season the dress code will be fully implemented … it is not asking too much to expect players to arrive appropriately dressed wearing their club tracksuit [not have it ‘in their bag’ as several did last season].  For training, quite frankly you can wear what you like; but on match days we must look the part. You are representing Bromley Green, not some pub outfit.

The sole purpose of this morning’s friendly, for both our friends from Mersham and ourselves, was to experiment and have a look at players in different roles. From my perspective, I learned quite a bit but as far as the result is concerned, one swallow does not make a summer. There are areas where I will work with the players on Thursdays during July and August [as with all teams in the club, there will be clubnight on Tuesdays and individual team training on Thursdays]. One thing that will stop is this obsession by some with constant spitting … I know it is a habit and many top sportspeople do it but it is disgusting, unnecessary and it looks terrible.

After we had taken a 3-goal lead relatively early on, our heads were up and Mersham will be the first to admit they were not at the races in defence. We all have those sort of days and whilst we ran out comfortable winners there is still much to work on.

The goals came from Alfie, Brandon B (3), Nathan (3 … or was one Mitch’s header?), Jimbo, a stunner from Josh, Maz (2). No-one can be faulted for effort but I thought Tyler Montgomery once more displayed huge potential and with belief he can develop into a great future asset for our club. I don’t normally select a man of the match in friendlies … so well done to all fourteen players.

My thanks to Aaron, Paul, Steve J and all the parents for their help with the goals etc and Sharon and Jane who as ever did their bit. The lads also asked me to thank Shane, Mark Day, Martin W, Lee Mc and Martyn Dalby for their support … it makes so much difference to them when they see senior members of the club take an interest.

I will pick the squads for next Saturday after training on Tuesday (6-7pm) but advance warning is that you need to be at the ground by 8am! Most of you are staying over on Friday and Saturday so at least you will be in the clubhouse on time! Can I also respectfully remind everyone that on the Sunday you are expected to help with the running of things. It is your club after all and we must put on a good display and be polite hosts to our guests from England and France. Again, on the Sunday, you will need to be at the ground early please and help us oldies who get very ratty after a long weekend!

So, the build up to next season has begun and after our own tournament on 8/9 June, we go to the Faversham Strike Force tournament on Saturday 15 June and the University of Kent on 16 June for the Herne Bay tournament.

Green: Louis Burton; Tyler Montgomery, Mitchell Barrett, Kieran Wilson, Max May, Reece Chapman, Brandon Austen, Jack Cheesman, Alfie Hills, James Cambridge, Brandon Bourne, Josh Twyman, Nathan Thorpe, Mazlum Aydin

And now … we prepare for next season!

To confirm we are at home to Mersham on Sunday. Please meet 9am in the clubhouse. Squad: Louis Burton; Reece Chapman, Mitchell Barrett (cpt), Kieran Wilson, Max May, Tyler Montgomery, James Cambridge, Brandon Austen, Jack Cheesman, Alfie Hills, Tom Messenger, Nathan Thorpe. I need to know if Josh Twyman is fit please. And if Brandon Bourne is still very ill please. Not heard from Mazlum Aydin who did not train. Tyler Sorrell and Luke Bryant have notified me that they are unavailable which is fair enough.

Sunday 2 June 2013 we are at home to Mersham with a 10.30am kick off. Details of squad after training on Tuesday evening … training is 6-7pm.

19.5.2013 Jack Cheesman – one of a cluster of new signings aiming to bring success in the Ashford League next season

I am hoping to fix up a friendly within the  next week at our ground [probably on the morning of Sunday 2 June] with Mersham. With up to eight new signings, some not absolutely sure yet, and a new challenge in the Ashford League, we need as many games as possible  to experiment. That is why I am also in touch with Grasshoppers and Canterbury Youth among others to try and keep us in action and find our best formation. With the tournaments coming up, especially our own on 8/9 June, plus training twice a week from July, everyone will be given the chance to stake a claim for a place in the starting line-up come September. Don’t forget our Presentation Dinner at Homelands on Friday 28 June at 7pm. You will need to purchase a club tie from myself. At the dinner, all the awards are made and you can vote for your Player of the Season at the ground any time between now and 9 June [forms and ballot box are there].

6-a-side Sunday 19 May 2013 at Homelands

On Sunday we meet at our ground at 12 midday and go up the road to Homelands for the South Ashford Tournament, as preparations begin for next season in the Ashford Youth League. I have too many players! Competition is going to be strong from now on. Joining us for the new campaign are Louis Burton, Levii Loyze, James A-H, Dan Hall and I have no doubt one or two more will be knocking on the door.

Our next action is training on Tuesday 14 May from 6-7pm and then on Sunday 19 May we are in the South Ashford tournament at Homelands, our new first team venue. Please support the Under 16s this Sunday [12th] at home 2pm kick off as they try once and for all to clinch the title. Dave and the boys have worked hard so let’s show our support and see them over the final hurdle.

Match date: 24 March 2013
Bromley Green 8-3 Woodnesborough
A welcome return to winning ways and at last a home game as this fragmented season is almost over. We have just two games left now [home to Trinity and home to Kennington] and then the focus will be on the Selsey Cup and planning for next season. I think most of us will agree we need a change of scenery come September and long trips to Thanet really don’t appeal too much – especially as some parents have told me that the fuel costs are sometimes causing difficulty.
Woodnesborough were struggling for a side and all credit to them for fulfilling the fixture and putting up a good fight; also thanks to their manager Paul who kindly refereed as our appointed official was called up for the U16s fixture.
There seems to be some doubt as to whether the score was 8-3 or 9-3 … it was so damn cold I think we all had a job to count on our fingers! But some terrific football in spells during the first half saw us loosely in control … I say loosely as for some reason we switch off when we think we have games won. Brandon Austen received the man of the match award and deservedly so … not just for his three great goals but also for the fact that he is starting to take responsibility and realise that when Dave and myself constantly nag him it is because with a little tweaking of his thinking processes he will become a much more effective contributor to the team.
Brandon Bourne recovered from last week’s injury and one of his goals was a joy to watch while Jimbo showed in the first half just what he can do when in the mood. Nathan joined in the goalscoring before he goes off on holiday.
At times we were superb, at times we were sloppy … but doesn’t that sum up our season? Thanks to the parents for taking down the goals and to Tyler Montgomery and Rory Dowd-Bird for supporting. Also great to have Steve Rollings and Lee McRobert fully committed to helping us make everyone enjoy their football and progression at the club.
We have Easter Sunday off … do family things or just relax and then we can look at our final two league games [the ground will be open as usual for senior matches over the weekend so you can always come down and use the cage or watch the TV if you want to]. Anyway, see you all on Wednesday please for training. DH

Building for next season
A few weeks to the Selsey Cup and then we will be focusing on summer training and tournaments. Whilst for some the last few fixtures may appear meaningless, for me they are important as the building for next season is well under way now. Please make sure all those going on the trip have paid me in full by next Sunday [as there is no match on Easter Sunday, I suggest you settle on Wednesday at training]. The 8-3 defeat of plucky Woodnesborough was another example of how we are delightful one moment but dreadful the next. Some superb goals shared around the boys.

Home to Woodnesborough is ON … all please meet 12.45pm

This Sunday (23 March) we entertain Woodnesborough with a 2pm kick off. Can we all be at training on Wednesday please. If you have sold the raffle books and want some more, please see Sharon or Jane. Don’t forget to bring the money back with the counterfoils.

Not had time to do a proper report from Sunday but well done to everyone for battling against the odds. Excellent goals from Jimbo and Bandon B (2).

Sunday 17 March 2013: Away to Trinity Colts … we meet at midday in the clubhouse. Game is at St Peters Recreation Ground, Broadstairs. The postcode is CT10 3AE.

Everyone at training on Wednesday 6 March please 5.15pm. Next Sunday we are at home to Trinity Colts and we will be meeting at 12.30pm to get prepared. I will pick the squad after training and announce it on the website. As soon as possible now, can we all settle our money for the trip please … it is all paid for but I now need to claw the money back for the club. Thanks and see you Wednesday, DH.

EKYL Under 14
Monkton Youth 1-2 Bromley Green
Report by Dave Homewood
A difficult pitch, a ball that seemed like a lump of lead, and a number of players clearly below par reduced us to scrambling and scrapping to gain the maximum points at Birchington Recreation Ground. Although far from our best, the boys dug deep and at the final whistle could hold their heads high as we will play much better than this in the future and gain no reward. Two special saves by Dylon will remain in the memory while substitute Mazlum Aydin answered the call by notching both goals. We don’t look fit and there is a definite need to work on our heading – but I asked for three points and the boys delivered. Well done to all the squad and my thanks to Martyn, Stan and Wilson for their support. Tyler has improved immensely as the season has progressed and Nicola from our sponsors Martin & Co presented him with the Player of the Match award.

Friendly Monday 25 February 2013
The squad to play against Mersham on the astroturf at the North School is: Dylan Barry, Tyler Sorrell, Mitchell Barrett, Josh Twyman, Luke Bryant, Reece Chapman, Brandon Austen, Ryan Anderson, Jack Cheesman, James Cambridge, Alfie Hills, Brandon Bourne, Kieran Wilson, Nathan Thorpe, Tom Messenger, Mazlum Aydin. Please meet at the North School by 5.15pm for a warm up and bring your match fee of £5 for Sharon. Anyone not available must let me know on 07761101988. Those that have club tracksuit tops should wear them and for the new lads I will sort their tops out over the next few weeks. Those who never seem to train these days have been left out for this one which seems fair … but the door is always open, so it would be good to see you on Wednesday for training at the ground at 5.15pm.

Woodnesborough cannot raise a side so game is off on Sunday … we will have training at 1pm everyone please … thanks DH

Squad for Sunday 17 February against Woodnesborough [our top pitch is still under water so I am not hopeful but until we are told differently we will take it that the game is on]: Dylan, Tyler, Mitch, Josh, Luke, Harry, Brandon A, James, Alfie, Brandon B, Tom, Nathan, Mazlum, Salih, Muhammed. All please meet at 12.30pm at the ground. Don’t forget, some of the dads are playing in the Charity Match in the morning if you want a laugh … Matt T, Anthony C, Steve J amongst them. They have to be at the ground 9.15am with kick off at 10am. If our afternoon game is called off, I will take a training session at 1pm so bring boots and footwear for the cage. Excellent training on Wednesday and some of you are learning different techniques very quickly. See you all on Sunday at 1pm. Bromley Green FC Under 14s are kindly sponsored by Martin & Co

Our FIFA night is set for Sunday 23 December at 6pm [clubhouse opens 5pm]. Let’s have everyone together as Christmas approaches … Luke Sorrell has ‘volunteered’ to oversee the proceedings while I will make sure there is plenty to eat/drink. Family and friends are of course welcome but the actual FIFA tournament is for the U14 players only and we can’t bend on that as I have already turned down some from other BGFC youth teams. DH

We have two friendlies over the Christmas break now: Mersham on 29 December (10.30am) and Willesborough on 2 January (2pm). Then the following Sunday we meet Kennington in the League. See you Sunday.

Match date: 16 December 2012
EKYL Under 14
Grasshoppers 7-1 Bromley Green
Report by Dave Homewood
Aside from the result, which is obviously very disappointing, my only hope is that we have all learned something from this below par performance at The Marsh Academy. There are no excuses as we had a squad of 14 fit players but the body language when things were going wrong is a discussion point we will have to hold when the time is right.

With their 100% record Grasshoppers are clearly going to walk the league now and in some ways being out of contention for the title will allow us to experiment without the pressure of knowing we ‘have to win’. A fine drive by Matt Kirby that hit the inside of the far post and rolled along the line perhaps gave an indication that it was not going to be our day. Sharper and stronger in the tackle and full of running off the ball, the home team were gifted several goals as we tried to re-group at half time 3-0 down.

But as so often happens any plans for a comeback were cruelly dashed when we conceded an early own goal and, although Josh Twyman scored a consolation with a splendid long-range free kick, we were overrun in the last 20 minutes.

Lots to work on between now and the end of the season and we must pick ourselves up ready for training on Wednesday which is at the 3G at Stanhope [please report 7.45pm]. For his superb attitude and perseverance, we all agreed that Nathan Thorpe should be rewarded with the Player of the Match accolade.

The players have been fantastic since I took over and we must not let one grim afternoon spoil the spirit that we are building. New signing Harry McDonald will come into the squad for our next match which is a home friendly against Mersham provisionally booked for Saturday 29 December (10.30am kick off).

Canterbury Eagles Colts 2-5 Bromley Green
Report by Dave Homewood
A game of two halves as the saying goes with a splendid first half display by the Green followed by a somewhat unintelligent second half performance that saw us appreciate the final whistle as we ran out of gas in some departments as Eagles flew at us.
Alfie Hills set us on the right path to victory with a terrific right foot finish and, when goals by Matt Kirby (2), Mazlum Aydin and Brandon Bourne gave us a 5-0 half time advantage, we looked set for a big score.
However, we spoke before the match about the dangers of underestimating any opposition and indeed we took our foot off the pedal in the second period and were made to pay. There had been a warning during the first half when Mitchell Barrett had to make a wonderful clearance to keep our goal intact. We were caught napping and a penalty and a well taken goal, even though Dylan did well to get a hand to it, brought about a 5-2 final scoreline.
In the final analysis, it is three points. We can look back with pride on the first half but must learn lessons from the way we were rolled over for much of the second period. Mazlum received the player of the match award and I am confident of turning him into something that will scare opposition defences … once he stops being ‘nice’ on the pitch!
Focus now turns to next week when we travel to Grasshoppers. Please meet as usual at 12 noon at the ground to leave at 12.15pm.

Match date: Sunday 2 December 2012
East Kent Youth League
Bromley Green U14s v Woodnesborough U14s
Preview by Dave Homewood
As so often happens in youth football, we follow an eternity of inaction with a fixture against the same opponents two weeks on the trot. Having had to dig deep and grind out a 2-0 victory last Sunday on the narrow Sandwich Technology School pitch, the squad is under no illusion that today’s return match will be another closely fought affair.
Due personal circumstances [and broken bones!] I will not name the starting line-up until meeting up with the players on Sunday at 12.45pm. We kick off at 2pm.
Squad: D Barry; T Sorrell, M Barrett, J Twyman, L Bryant, J Cambridge, P Baron, B Austen, M Kirby, B Bourne, N Thorpe, A Hills, M Aydin, S Yalcin, M Zurel, T Messenger

Selsey is all booked for 3-6 May 2013. A letter to all parents/guardians will go out prior to Christmas and we will have a get-together in the New Year to discuss the payment schedule, food, school options etc. One or two deposits are still to come in please [I have paid them – so asap would be appreciated]. Thanks DH

Dave Homewood reports from Sandwich
Under the cosh for a large tranche of the second period, the boys deserve immense praise for hanging on and digging deep to make sure of returning home with maximum points. With virtually every other game in the county called off, it was a cruel irony that following week after week with no fixture the lads were suddenly expected to produce the goods with a squad riddled with broken bones and illness. Indeed during the week there was doubt we could even field eleven fit men! Thank goodness we have a large and flexible squad.

As it was, this was not about a pretty game of football but solely about gathering the points and keeping our outside title hopes alive. The boys I feel learned a great deal today about ‘doing a job’ in a strange environment and evidenced once again how they are growing up on and off the field.

Our goalscorers were Mazlum Aydin and Tom Messenger with one in each half but sandwiched between there were long periods of desperate defending and slogging it out in midfield. The highlight from our perspective was the form of keeper Dylan Barry who made two saves of utter brilliance to retain a clean sheet and thwart the home forwards who, in all honesty, were right to claim they deserved something out of the game.

Mitchell Barrett and Josh Twyman continue to work on forming an impregnable central defensive partnership while full backs Tyler Sorrell and Luke Bryant were superb until they understandably became tired in the last quarter as the Borough piled on the pressure.

There are a few things to work on in midfield, including being the right side of one’s man when up against it but Brandon Austen and Pavel Baron gave everything they have in the middle and I would imagine they are tired boys today! Out wide, Alfie Hills and James Cambridge gave us options and once we can get them going round their man more instead of too often turning inside to meet a posse of players they will create havoc. Maz and Tom Messenger were given the nod to lead our attack and they both scored at critical times early in both halves. That’s their job, so well done. Once they gain more confidence, realise that round thing belongs to them, and stop being too ‘nice’ on the pitch their performances will also move to a new level. Luckily we had able substitutes in Nathan Thorpe, who replaced the injured Messenger up front, and Mohammed Zurel who slotted in at left back to give Luke a rest.

The old cliché applies; eg you don’t win anything with just eleven men and I have nothing but praise for the lads who wore their shirt with pride today. For long periods we were not the better side but the determination of everyone to get the job done was admirable. The player of the match award was chosen by Football Liaison Officer Dave Andrews and, in mentioning the brilliance of Dylan and the class of Mitch, Tom was his selection for his total commitment to the team. Well done Tom and all the boys. We have the return home fixture against Woodnesborough next Sunday and will be under no illusions that only the same fighting spirit will see us emerge on top again.

Thanks go to Connor Gower for assisting, ‘lino’ Matt Kirby with his one good arm, and of course the parents/friends whose enthusiasm and support are vital ingredients to the buzz we all have at the moment.

Green: D Barry; T Sorrell, M Barrett, J Twyman, L Bryant; J Cambridge, B Austen, P Baron, A Hills; M Aydin, T Messenger, N Thorpe, M Zurel

To parents, to ensure complete transparency, here is the message that has been sent to all the players [5.11.2012] on their own BGFC Facebook site

Me again! Please get your trip deposits of £30 paid to Jane or myself asap now. Once the deposits are in, I will pay the lot up front to secure our place in the tournament. This gives parents plenty of time to find the remaining £70 per person and when the weather is better we can do some fund raising to help meet the costs. The date we settled on to remind you all is 3-6 May. If any of your parents need to talk to me then email or text or phone or facebook or even better still … come and see me at the ground. For this Wednesday’s training, I have had apologies from Jim and Mitch who have school football and will probably miss training but I hope to see the rest of you at 5.15pm. Anyone needing lifts, contact me on Tuesday to make arrangements. That’s it for now and please encourage the whole squad to come on here so they know what is going on. DH

Can anyone please give me the following information as I am attempting to keep proper records. I need our scorers in the following games:

23.9.2012 Away Kennington lost 7-1 [so who scored the one please?] Tom

I know the scorers in the other two league matches … thanks DH

Match date: 30 October 2012
U14 Bromley Green 12-1 Willesborough FC
Report by Dave Homewood
What a strange game! Our opponents seemed to gather players of all ages from around the local streets as kick off time approached; we had no time for any organised warm-up and I began to wonder the wisdom of such a disorganised fixture!
However, let’s give credit to the ‘visitors’ for battling to the end despite being outclassed by a Green side that now looks the part and is brimming with confidence.
As it was a friendly, I am not too concerned at who scored but I do know Maz lobbed a beauty, Brandon Bourne got a couple, Josh, Connor, Tom, Player of the Match James hit four … but the important thing is that we came through without further injury, gave Dylon his run on the field and had some pizza and chips afterwards!
Thanks to Locko for refereeing despite his injuries, Martyn and Connor for their help, Sharon for encouraging Matt to wash the kit, Angela for stocking up the bar and the parents for their fantastic support. Also a word for Luke who was not fit but still supported the lads … well done!
Next up is a trip to Trinity Colts and details will be given at training on Wednesday when players should report to the clubhouse by 5.15pm please.

Under 14 Friendly
Hythe Stars & Stripes 2-4 Bromley Green
Report by Dave Homewood
The progress of the squad over the past three weeks is little less than astonishing and, as stated in an earlier review, the lads are growing up quickly. Extra midweek training is helping with the fitness side but it is also off the field activities that I believe are making this a group that now really appreciates the value of the ‘team’ ethos. The fact that we all arrive in club dress code, start and finish the day at our own ground and enjoy the company of others, football on the box and plenty of junk food goes a long way to forging a strong unit. We went to Hythe on the back of a thumping win against Monkton and a blank week last Sunday due to the weather.
Our hosts, who play a level above us and are unbeaten in the league, came back strongly with two goals in the final ten minutes but the Green had done enough to ensure victory after building a 4-0 advantage through Matt Kirby, Alfie Hills, Brandon Bourne and James Cambridge.
Dylan in fact had another good game between the sticks and was a little unlucky with both of Hythe’s late goals that presented a somewhat distorted view of the balance of play. Josh deservedly won the player of the match award and Mitchell was again imperious at the centre of the defence. Brandon Austen is gaining in authority and worked tirelessly today for his team mates, Luke grew in stature as the game went on, while Matt is growing in confidence with every outing.
I could mention everyone of course but the boys know they all did well and we now look forward to meeting Willesborough FC on Tuesday at Waterside with a 1pm kick off before travelling for a crucial league game against Trinity Colts next Sunday. Lots of fun, action and training before that though lads.
Some quick mentions: (1) the referee who was superb – how refreshing, a young unpretentious official who applied common-sense throughout and didn’t want to be the star of the show; (2) Martyn Dalby who gives the boys a few minutes respite from me with the pre-match warm-up; and (3) the band of parents that are joining in this exciting adventure and seem to be loving it as much as the players!
Green: Dylan Barry; Tyler Sorrell, Josh Twyman, Mitchell Barrett, Luke Bryant; James Cambridge, Matt Kirby, Brandon Austen, Alfie Hills; Tom Messenger, Brandon Bourne, Mazlum Aydin, Pawel Baron

TEAM SHEET UNDER 14 away Hythe Stars and Stripes

What a fantastic turn-out at training on Wednesday night boys (24 Oct) … everyone attending except the two lads on holiday which is fair enough. See some of you on Thursday night and all of you on Sunday at 12.30pm [except Salih who is going away, Nathan who is on holiday and Muhammed who is spending time with his family]. We have a tough friendly game against a team from a higher division but we need stern challenges like this as the squad develops. The address in case any of you get lost [I am terrible at getting lost so I don’t drive unless I have to!] is The Grove, Hythe CT21 6AX. You are all doing brilliant and I’ll get you a McDonalds next week [Monday]. Cheers Dave
PS: please remember you now turn up for games dressed in your club tracksuit … I will try and get everyone bottoms as well but we may need to do a bit of fund raising.

We have a game on Sunday now (27 October) so let’s have everybody up for it at training please. I will give full details after training on Wednesday. Reminder that you are all welcome to also train on Tuesdays and Thursdays at no extra cost. Can’t be bad can it? Three nights training by some of our top staff for £2!

Letter to parents which was to be given out today (Sunday 21.10.2012) however the weather messed up the day.  One parent has already informed me of a family holiday at Whitsun so there is an alternative date of 3-6 May. Please have a read and let me know during the week. As always time is tight on booking places or we will miss out. I will bring hard copies to the clubhouse for those that need them. Please click on the link below. Thanks, Dave.

EKYL Under 14 Division
Bromley Green 7-0 Monkton
Report by Dave Homewood
Once we had broken the deadlock and the early nerves had been quelled, the shackles came off and the boys now have a positive mindset as they prepare to climb the table. Extra training during the week clearly paid off for some and at the end of this encouraging performance there was a confident ‘buzz’ within the squad that has been missing of late.

With due respect, Monkton provided the ideal moderate opposition as we continue to experiment with positions and tactics and I feel much was learned by everyone [including myself]. The subtle changes worked and much credit must go to the lads who will all gradually become more aware of their function within the squad. Like all managers, my first priority is to get a settled defence and build from there. The pairing of Josh and Mitchell in the centre has the potential to go on and serve the club for many years to come – they were quite simply superb and willing to develop their understanding as the game unfolded. With Dylan in excellent form between the sticks and Luke and Tyler doing their jobs as full backs the basis is there and competition for places will increase. That can only be good for the squad. However, this win emanated not solely from brilliant individual efforts but more importantly from the ‘team’ ethos. At Bromley Green, on and off the field, we stand or fall together and it was evident to me that there had been little cliques and factions within the squad. I just don’t tolerate that and hopefully they have already been dissolved as the players adapt to a new approach.

The goals came from the outstanding James Cambridge (3), Tom Messenger, Brandon Bourne who was returning after injury, a sensational lob from 30 yards by Brandon Austen and player of the match Mitchell Barrett. The injury to Maz and the non-appearance of one player left me with the basic 14 and each one did their bit for the team. Thanks to the referee Mr Hurst, also to the parents who do all those little tasks that make my job easier and of course to Dave Andrews who along with Martyn Dalby will help me to make this a group of which we can all be really proud.

But the final word has to be about the magnificent response by the players and their mature attitude. A lot of growing up has occurred during the past week! Well done everybody! Green: Dylan Barry; Tyler Sorrell, Josh Twyman, Mitchell Barrett, Luke Bryant; Tom Messenger, Brandon Austen, Matthew Kirby, Alfie Hills; James Cambridge, Brandon Bourne. Subs all used: Salih, Nathan, Muhammed

Match date: 14 October 2012
Molten East Kent Youth League Under 14
Bromley Green v Monkton Youth
Preview by Dave Homewood
If the boys show the same battling qualities on the pitch on Sunday as they have done in training this week, we will soon start to climb the table. It is early days, and I still feel a number of players have yet to really find their niche … there are several excellent versatile lads but the focus over the next few games will be on establishing exactly where they can function best in the interests of the team. We will all have to be patient with each other as we experiment. We welcome a Monkton side that has won two of its three league games and has progressed in the cup; so the likelihood is that we are in for a close affair. But the extra emphasis on fitness during the week and having belief in one another will hopefully see us gain the points that will provide a platform for an enjoyable season. The whole squad should report by 1pm with the only doubt being Mazlum who was injured last Sunday and was unable to train either Wednesday or Thursday. Obviously I cannot play everybody every week and I will be seeking for a mature approach as over the course of time all players will get their share of the action. I am not into sulkers, so if you happen to be fed up with me at any particular time, just accept that like all managers I will put the team first. Look forward to seeing all players, parents and supporters on Sunday for what should be an entertaining match. Kick off is at 2pm and players are to report by 1pm at the latest. Any problems, please ring me direct on 07761101988. What a great turn-out for training on Wednesday (10 October) and I was so pleased everyone was able to attend apart from the injured Maz. Your tracksuit tops will be at the ground this Thursday (11 October)  so those that want to collect them and train again are more than welcome … be at the ground Thursdays by 5.45pm if you want to join in training.

Ramsgate 7-0 Bromley Green
Report by Dave Homewood
In many ways the scoreline is cruel as, for the opening half hour of this match at Manston against Premier opposition, we were undoubtedly the better side. Things turned sour in the closing stages as some heads dropped but it was then that I learned the key areas that the squad needs to focus upon if it is to reach its potential. Tom Messenger hit a post with us on top while we were frustrated by the linesman’s flag on a number of occasions before the inevitable happened as we were caught square at the back on the break by the Rams only forward who slotted home. Dylan had made some great stops while the starting back four of Salih, James, Mitchell and Mazlum were terrific but we went into the break trailing by the single goal. The feeling was, now we were kicking down the slope, that if we could muster some shots at their less than convincing keeper, this tie was there for the taking. But for some reason, and I have no idea what it was, we literally just stood and watched as the home team took a 3-0 lead and effectively that was that. With Maz taken off injured and Tom also carrying a knock we were stretched but credit to the team for battling against the odds. The Rams seemed to have extra players during the closing stages and in all honesty we were out for the count. A number of the goals conceded came from losing possession further upfield and this is a discussion I will have with the lads. We will continue to experiment as I am not sure some lads are playing in their best positions. Results such as today’s do not over concern me as a respectable place in the league is the priority. Lots of positives and the lads are quickly [I hope!] seeing me as a ‘critical friend’ and not a criticiser … there is a huge difference. It is important they believe in themselves and halting the losing of heart and desire when things go wrong is my first challenge. There are numerous points I will make to the boys in good time but the immediate attention will turn to three factors: (1) the mindset and the belief; (2) the lack of sharpness over a few yards which is vital for all positions and (3) challenging for the ball in the air in midfield as we simply did not win one header all game from goal kicks. So, after half an hour I was confident of a famous victory. Five minutes into the second half and we faced a damage limitation exercise. Such is the beauty of football! This Wednesday the boys will have a session with Dave Andrews to work on fitness and some have already told me they are looking forward to it. Please remember to be at the ground by 5.15pm at the latest and bring footwear suitable for both the grass and the MUGA. Those that would like to train also on Tuesdays and Thursdays please let me know. Green: Dylan; Salih, James, Mitchell, Mazlum; Tyler, Matt, Brandon A, Alfie; Nathan, Tom. Subs: Luke, Josh

Special moment for Dylan who receives the Player of the Match award on the eve of his birthday from England Supporters FC captain Richie Moore

This Sunday we are away to Ramsgate in the Cup and need to leave Waterside at 11.45am as kick off is at the earlier time of 1.30pm. Apart from Brandon who is still injured, we should have a fully fit squad. Any questions, please ring me on 07761101988. See you all on Sunday. Dave H

Firstly best wishes for the future for Colin, James and Tina who have decided to step down from managing the squad. We appreciate all the time they have put in and look forward to them visiting us during the season. We have had to act quickly and Ben Stevens will manage the side this Sunday at Kennington although until he sorts out some of his other commitments he cannot say yet whether he will be full time. But with two of the ladies taking care of the admin, everything should work out. My final point is to thank the boys for being so mature when I met with them. Whatever goes on in the background, they are our main priority, and it is important they develop and have fun. They have expressed a desire to be a part of things after games, in their words, “like the Under 16s”, and this will start from this Sunday when food will be provided on return to the clubhouse. Parents are more than welcome, although they don’t have to stop as we always ensure there is safe transport home for young people.
